That would be called stalker behavior now, but we forgive Joe for his choices because its clear that Kathleen has feelings for both of his personas, and shes conflicted about which one she really loves.One of the reasons Joe and Kathleen are able to get on better terms is that she visits Fox Books and decides that it isnt as bad as she feared it was. The irony is that in the 27 years since this film came out, online shopping has decimated the big bookstore franchises like the one Fox Books was meant to represent. There are still a handful of bookstores, but most of them are now independent like Kathleens shop.Online dating has also drastically changed since Youve Got Mail was in theaters. Some people even seem more comfortable having an intimate relationship with strangers theyll never meet than with the individuals who actually interact with them on a daily basis. Catfishing is also a thing in the present, although neither Joe nor Kathleen knowingly did that to each other. Egg prices have reached an all-time high, according to federal government data.Some people are turning to backyard chickens but experts warn it's not as easy or cheap as it seems.Farm rescues are bracing for people who will be trying to get rid of chickens purchased on a whim.With egg prices reaching an all-time high in the US, the idea of backyard chickens roaming around, grazing on grass, and producing fresh, delicious eggs is becoming increasingly appealing.But they may not be the budget-savvy trick some hope for.The nationwide average price of a dozen Grade A large eggs reached $4.95 in January, a nearly 20% increase from December to January, according to federal data. The jump was driven by the bird flu outbreak, which drastically impacted egg supply, as well as inflation. The lagging egg supply has also led some grocery stores to limit how many cartons customers can buy.Farm rescues say they're seeing an increase in interest in backyard chickens, which gained some popularity during the pandemic and when egg prices spiked in January 2023. However, they also say many people don't realize just how expensive and high maintenance backyard chickens can be, and that many consumers who buy chickens for eggs end up trying to get rid of them a short time later.Backyard chickens can be expensive and hard to care for"Besides pot belly pigs, calls for chickens and roosters are the most frequent calls we get," Matt Lieurance, the co-founder of Farm Animal Refuge in San Diego, California, told Business Insider. "People get chickens mainly for egg production and then a few things happen. One is they don't have the proper setup and they get a predator attack." Some people are buying backyard chickens to combat eggflation. Kelly Rutkowski, Adopt a Bird Network Chickens can be preyed upon by creatures commonly found in American backyards, such as coyotes, hawks, raccoons, or possums. Someone might buy a simple chicken coop at the same farm store from where they buy chicks, but it may be too small as the chickens grow or not adequately protective against predators.Proper housing for backyard chickens can run anywhere from several hundred to several thousand dollars, potentially running a lot higher than grocery store eggs, even with the record-high prices.There are also some costs associated with backyard chickens that may not be clear upfront to a first-timer, such as ongoing food costs and unexpectedly high medical bills due to chickens requiring specialty veterinarians and being at risk for health complications that could require ongoing treatment or medicine.Farm Sanctuary, which has locations in New York state and Los Angeles, said backyard chickens make up the majority of animal placement requests they receive."Many guardians who reach out to us for help are new to caring for a backyard flock and are ill-prepared for the challenges of providing lifelong care. In some cases, they underestimate the challenges associated with protecting birds from predation, the expense involved, the difficulties of wintertime care, or the general level of care and commitment," Ashley Pankratz, Farm Sanctuary's senior manager of rescue and placement, said in a statement provided to BI.Pankratz also noted that backyard chickens are not necessarily the answer for people who view it as a more humane way to eat eggs, adding chicks are often coming from the same facilities that supply factory farms.Gene Baur, the president and co-founder of Farm Sanctuary, has also spoken out against the role of factory farming in the bird flu outbreak. "Our irresponsible factory farming system is a breeding ground for diseases like bird flu, and places both humans and other animals at risk," he told BI in a statement. Chicken coops need to be set up to protect the birds from potential predators, including coyotes and hawks. Kelly Rutkowski, Adopt a Bird Network Complicated by the bird flu outbreakMany people also don't realize that it could take four to six months for chicks, which are often purchased instead of full-grown chickens,to start laying eggs, or that they'll only produce eggs for a few years and live much longer than that."The same thing kind of happened in 2020, when everyone went into quarantine and decided they were going to homestead," Lieurance said of people rushing out to buy chickens and later realizing it was a bad idea.This time around, the problem is compounded by the bird flu outbreak, as sanctuaries like Farm Animal Refuge are unable to take in new birds due to the risk of spreading the disease, meaning people looking to get rid of their backyard chickens may not have many options."That is another huge problem with everybody going out and buying these chicks right now they're potentially moving around this disease to places it hasn't been before," Lieurance said.Lieurance said he doubts any responsible farm sanctuaries will be able to take in new birds in the near future.Some think they are buying hens and end up with roostersAnother challenge with buying backyard chickens is that you may unintentionally end up with a rooster.Determining the sex of chicks can be difficult, and stores will often sell a group of small hens that actually contain a rooster."When you buy baby chicks, they tell you that they're female, and then six to eight weeks later one of them starts crowing and your neighbors complain," Lieurance said, adding that Farm Animal Refuge often hears from people looking to get rid of roosters. Hens typically lay eggs for a few years but can live for much longer. Kelly Rutkowski, Adopt a Bird Network Pankratz of the Farm Sanctuary also said they "receive daily requests to take in roosters who are unwanted, abandoned, or surrendered to shelters."In addition to not producing eggs, roosters are also illegal or heavily restricted in many jurisdictions where egg-laying hens are allowed. They can be difficult to rehome for similar reasons.Kelly Rutkowski, the founder of the Adopt a Bird Network, said the roosters represent a "big animal welfare issue." Her organization serves as an intermediary between people who want to adopt chickens, and rescues, sanctuaries, or shelters that are looking for somewhere to place them.Rutkowski said the hens are easy to place with people who'd just like to keep them as pets, and that they are typically adopted out the same days she posts them online, but roosters are much harder."There are people who see them as more than just egg machines and see them for their personality," she said. But even those people may live in places that make it illegal or impractical to have a rooster around. She tries to discourage people from buying backyard chickens on a whim, to avoid having more roosters with nowhere they can go."It does worry me," Rutkowski said of the high egg prices and increase in people buying chicks. Darcy Flynn, a lawyer, wanted to go on a 2-month trip to Spain, so he retired at 64.He's been splitting his time traveling overseas, visiting his mom, driving cross-country, and taking part-time legal jobs.He's delivering company cars for $0.45 per mile to supplement his pension and explore the country.This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Darcy Flynn, 65, a semi-retired lawyer from Washington, DC. The following has been edited for length and clarity. Early last year, my partner and I were figuring out how to get enough time off for a trip to Spain. I was 64 and working as a legal aid attorney in Washington, DC. Although I could have applied for extended leave, I decided it was a good time to retire to have the flexibility to travel more. We ended up taking a two-month trip to Spain. Since then, I've traveled both alone and with her to Gibraltar, Morocco, Germany, and Nigeria. I've also spent time in Ireland, and, as a huge Beatles fan, finally had a chance to visit Liverpool in England.My first year of retirementWhile traveling in Europe, my partner and I strategized about what to do when we returned to the US. Having both rented out our homes for a year, we knew we'd need to get creative about where we stayed when we got back.I got intopet sittingwhen we were traveling and started researching other ways I could get paid to travel in the US. I found companies that pay to have cars delivered to employees around the country. As an independent contractor, I could pick up a job whenever I wanted.So, over the past nine months, I've spent my time doing one of four things: traveling overseas, visiting my 91-year-old mother in Michigan, driving around the country, and taking on part-time legal jobs.I was offered my first driving assignment when I was in DC, getting ready to travel to Michigan. The 1,200-mile round-trip ride usually costs about $700, including car rental and gas.Instead, I drove a Chevrolet Equinox to Sandusky, Ohio, for $0.45 per mile. The drive earned me about $225, and I spent $32 on a three-hour Greyhound bus to Detroit. It was less convenient than going straight to my mom's, but since retiring, I've had a bit more free time.I've continued taking on these jobs at my convenience. In January, I drove for three weeks straight, starting in Massachusetts. I made it to Tennessee, Texas, New Mexico, Phoenix, and Los Angeles. In New Mexico, I visited Carlsbad Caverns National Park. In Los Angeles, I stopped by a few sites of the infamous and grizzly Charles Manson murders. In Atlanta, I ended up reconnecting with one of my best friends from college, and we've been keeping in touch since. I used to just pick a destination, make a hotel reservation, and then hit the road. But these days, I like not knowing what city my little journey will take me to. So far, I've completed 11 drives and earned over $6,000 from them. I've spent a little under that amount, as I travel frugally and don't splurge on restaurants or lodging. The driving basically pays for itself and allows me to save my pension and rental income; I rent out my house in DC for about $1,500 a month, while my pensions total $2,700. I collect $300 a month in interest income. It adds up to about $4,500 a month. Flynn took on a ten-week legal project in New York to have the opportunity to explore the city. Darcy Flynn I haven't fully retired from lawI initially considered fully retiring because I had sufficient income. But then, an opportunity to work on a ten-week legal project in New York came up. I had never worked in New York and saw it as an opportunity to live like a local, so I jumped at the chance. I like the idea of continuing to work. My original plan was to work part-time until I turned 70 and started collecting Social Security, but now, I can see myself working into my 70s. While there are opportunities for more permanent positions, I'm not interested. I need more time off to visit my mom in Michigan, travel, and explore. I am 65 and want to continue doing this while I can. I see people around my age whose physical health would make this lifestyle hard. These days, I walk about 7 miles per day, both to save on transportation costs and to exercise. I've lost 25 pounds from walking. It's nice being unsure about what will come next.
