• Can dumbphones revive Europes mobile industry?
    thenextweb.com
Do you remember your first phone? The thought of mine brings a tear to my eye. It was a beautiful blue Nokia 3310 and it was borderline indestructible. Best of all, the handset had the greatest mobile feature of all time: Snake. It also offered calls and SMS, but I had little use for those extravagances. I had a pay-as-you-go contract, and money was tight back then. I also had a home phone and Mum footed the bills. As for SMS, what was the point of that when you had the joys of MSN Messenger available for free?Mobile calls and texts were strictly reserved for emergencies like getting attacked in the street. Unfortunately, when that moment came, the assailants also stole my beloved Nokia 3310.Those were the days. They were also the days when Europe led the world in mobile telecoms. Finlands Nokia was the worlds largest handset manufacturer, with Swedens Ericsson holding down third place. US rival Motorola sandwiched the two Scandinavian competitors.Yet none of them could maintain those positions for long. Europe lost its lead due to slow adoption of smartphones, weak software ecosystems, and fierce competition. American and Asian manufacturers now dominate the industry. But Europes old mobile guard isnt finished yet. The continents phone makers are still finding new routes into the market. One of them stems from the resurgence of dumbphones. A reminder of simpler times, the basic bricks offer a digital detox and an escape from relentless data harvesting.A range of new versions have recently been launched. Older ones are also enjoying comebacks including the legendary 3310.Hackaday recently spotlighted a technique that revitalises the classic handset: installing a USB-C socket. The mod is the brainchild of Andrea Salvadori, a developer based in Italy. Salvadori adds the USB-C port by integrating a small adapter into the phone. Hes selling the parts online for 25.My beloved 3310 would have cherished the upgrade, but the old device is sadly no longer with me. Thankfully, a host of modern dumbphones are now available.Europes dumbphone rallyMany of the new dumbphones are made in Europe. One thats caught our eye is the plastic-and-fantastic Barbie Phone. Built by Finlands HMD Global in partnership with Mattel, the handset launched last year.HMD bills the handset as a tool to take a vacation from your smartphone. It features a few basic apps and one extremely intriguing game: Malibu Snake. Digital wellbeing tips and Barbie Meditation are also available on the flip phone.TNW contributor Sin Geschwindt was dazzled by the device. Well, his four-year-old daughter was. I love that pink one, she said. Wow stickers. I want it!Adults have also been impressed, but the lurid pink and Barbie branding arent for everyone. Fortunately, there are numerous other dumbphones on the market. An impressive number of them are built by European companies. Among them are the Nokia 2660 Flip, the Swiss-made Punkt MP02, and the 6820 from Swedish firm Doro.Europe may have lagged behind in the smartphone era, but the continent is now leading the dumbphone revival. • Apple removes apps with missing trader contact information from EU App Store
    9to5mac.com
Apple last year announced an important change coming to the App Store in the EU that would force developers to share their contact information with customers in some cases. Now that the deadline has arrived, Apple is removing apps from developers who havent shared their trader contact information from the EU App Store.New requirements for developers distributing apps on the EU App StoreIn an email sent to developers, Apple notes that those who havent provided their trader status to the company have had their apps removed from the App Store in the European Union. This means that these apps can no longer be downloaded by users in the EU.The requirement is part of a series of new rules for online platforms established by the EUs Digital Services Act (DSA) and determines that companies must verify and display contact information for any merchant that distributes digital applications. And, of course, this affects the App Store. Apple says that a developer is considered a trader under EU terms when they make any revenue as a result of an app. This includes not only direct revenue from App Store sales, but also in-app purchases or advertisements. Only developers distributing free apps with no ads wont have to provide such information. When it comes to individual developers, the EU App Store will show their address or P.O. Box, phone number, and email address. For organizations, only the phone number and email address are required. This information will be available on each apps page in the App Store.Developers can check their trader status and send their contact information to Apple via App Store Connect.Add 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. • Top Trump Ally Says Elon Musk Is a "Parasitic Illegal Immigrant"
    futurism.com
"He wants to impose his freak experiments and play-act as God without any respect for the countrys history, values, or traditions."Long before Elon Musk became Donald Trump's buddy-in-chief, the real estate mogul had another right-hand man: Steve Bannon.Bannon was a right-wing media crank, alleged white supremacist, and self-described "economic nationalist." He served as Trump's chief strategist from Trump's first inauguration until August 2017, when Trump let him go just a semester later. Now the former Trump staffer is back in as a Trump-allied media figure where he's been taking some fiery shots at Musk's unelected role."Musk is a parasitic illegal immigrant," a wound-up Bannon told UnHerd, a right-wing British publication. "He wants to impose his freak experiments and play-act as God without any respect for the countrys history, values, or traditions."It's true that Musk's immigration status during his early in the United States was dubious, with his brother recalling that "we were illegal immigrants." But like many people fortunate enough to be able to access sound legal aid, he was able to fix his status and eventually gained US citizenship in 2002.If you imagined that gave him sympathy for others in a similar bind, you'd be wrong; just today, he was mocking the mass deportation of undocumented immigrants.Nevertheless, the tiff does illustrate a tension in Trump's current orbit. Bannon's media venture, "The War Room," is a widely popular conservative talk show in which Bannon and his guests spout national populism talking points so while both are allied with Trump, Bannon represents a decidedly different brand of MAGA compared to Musk's techno-libertarianism.The former Trump staffer frequently blasts the president's new Silicon Valley buddies Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk, whom he refers to as billionaire elites, using the same type of populist rhetoric Trump invoked when running for his first term. He's not wrong the two tech billionares had a combined net worth of nearly $666 billion at the time of Trump's second inauguration (though not nearly as wealthy, Bannon doesn't exactly represent the little guy either he's worth an estimated $20 million.)Comments like these aren't new for Bannon, who in early January called Musk a "truly evil guy, a very bad guy," vowing it was his "personal thing to take this guy down."It's an interesting invective coming from Bannon, whose role as "chief strategist" has some parallels to Musk's role as "senior advisor to the president."At one time called the "second most powerful man in the world," Bannon's gig was tailor-made for him by Trump, just as Musk's was made up by executive order. Bannon's tenure as Trump's lapdog was also derided by the media, and his meddling in agencies like the National Security Agency were likewise mired in secrecy as he took defacto control of national security policy. We don't know how long Musk's unelected term will last, but we might have a good blueprint Bannon's tenure ended in disgrace eight months in, and the fallout resulted in numerous investigations as well as a four-month prison stint, which may weigh in the sentencing of his most recent guilty plea for conspiracy and money laundering. If Musk's critics have one thing to hope for, it's that the mogul will follow the path blazed by Bannon which ultimately leads to the courtroom.Share This Article

  • Best Chemical Drain Cleaners for 2025
    www.cnet.com
I leaned on my background as a chemical engineer to offer insights on the effectiveness of these controversial chemicals. In my experiment, I tested eight of the most commonly available chemical drain cleaners: six alkaline and two acidic. I performed dissolution tests to evaluate how well each of them could dissolve drain blockages. I had one goal: to determine which products, if any, would work effectively against the most common clogging materials. For this rundown, I headed to CNET's product testing lab in Louisville, Kentucky, to conduct a comprehensive batch distillation experiment with eight of the most commonly used chemical drain cleaners on the market. My primary objective was to determine the efficiency of each product in dissolving various types of clogging materials, including organic matter, grease, paper products and pet hair (the same pet hair we use for our robot vacuum tests, as a matter of fact). Throughout the experiment, I also noted the pH levels of the cleaning solutions when mixed with water and monitored any temperature changes. Furthermore, I considered the chemical composition and versatility of use of each product when comparing them to one another. Acids vs. basesBefore conducting experiments with these substances, I separated them into acids and bases. As you may recall from high school chemistry, acids are compounds that donate a hydrogen ion (H+) when mixed with water and have a pH lower than 7. On the other hand, bases are compounds that accept those ions (or hydroxide, OH- ions) and have a pH higher than 7. Understanding this distinction is crucial, due to two important factors associated with these products: corrosivity and causticity.Corrosivity refers to the potential of a chemical substance to cause rust and deterioration of the materials that make up your piping system. Causticity, on the other hand, relates to how a chemical substance reacts when it comes into contact with organic matter, specifically breaking down proteins and other organic molecules, which can lead to tissue destruction or chemical burns. To determine the acidity or basicity of each compound, we measure their pH. In simple terms, the more acidic or basic a compound is, the greater its potential for corrosivity and causticity. Sample pH reading from one of our test subjects. 11.38 pH corresponds to an alkaline solution. Gianmarco Chumbe/CNETAcidic drain cleaners, particularly those with high acid concentrations like sulfuric acid drain cleaners, are more hazardous compared to their basic or alkaline counterparts. In chemistry, the order of addition does matter. Normally, you would gradually introduce an acid to water, slowly increasing the concentration of the acid.Never add water to an acid as this reaction is known to generate a significant amount of heat and release hazardous fumes. See for yourself in the GIF below (and don't try this at home). Adding water into this beaker of sulfuric acid creates an immediate exothermic reaction, boiling the water on contact and releasing hazardous smoke into the air. Do not try this at home! Gianmarco Chumbe/CNETTo ensure safety during the experiments, I took necessary precautions by wearing personal protective equipment, including safety goggles, gloves, long-sleeved clothing and a mask. The dissolution test was conducted in a well-ventilated laboratory area to minimize exposure to any hazardous fumes that may be released.Dissolution testTo begin the experiment, I weighed specific amounts of the clogging materials into separate 1,000 ml beakers: 4 grams of hair20 grams of organic matter (10 grams each of apple peels and carrot peels)40 grams of lard for grease14 grams of paper products (7 grams each of toilet paper and paper towels)Using a graduated cylinder, I carefully measured and added 200 ml of each basic drain cleaner and 70 ml of each acidic drain cleaner to the respective beakers, stirring the mixtures with a glass rod and ensuring thorough mixing without spills. Following the instructions provided with each product, I allowed the solutions to sit for the recommended time, typically between 15 and 30 minutes.A crucial step in my test was the inclusion of water, a component often overlooked in similar experiments found online. Chemical drain cleaners are designed to work in the presence of water, which facilitates the transportation of the cleaner to the clogs and evenly distributes the solution over their surfaces, enabling the dissolution process. After the designated time had elapsed, I added tap water to each beaker containing the cleaner solutions and clogging materials. For basic drain cleaners (pH > 7.0), I used 500 ml of hot water at 46 degrees C, while for acidic drain cleaners (pH < 7.0), I used 700 ml of cold water at 19 degrees C.To allow sufficient time for the chemicals to work, I left the samples to sit overnight and resumed the evaluation the following morning. By this point, the samples had transformed into sludgy, slimy mixtures. Hair dissolution test in progress Gianmarco Chumbe/CNETTo proceed with the experiment, I employed a vacuum filtration process using a Buchner funnel connected to a 1,000ml filtering flask equipped with a pump. The contents of each beaker were carefully poured into the funnel while the pump was activated. Once most of the chemical drain cleaner had been drawn out of the funnel, I performed a water wash to remove any residual chemicals from the surface of the debris samples, ensuring that only wet solids remained in the Buchner funnel. Our Buchner funnel, made of chemically resistant borosilicate glass, featured a perforated plate with 2ml openings, allowing only the tiniest particles to pass through. In my test logic, "if a substance, solid or liquid, could pass through the 2mm openings in the filter, it was highly unlikely to cause pipe clogging." On the left, our vacuum filtration setup. Liquid and dissolved solids pass through 2mm holes in the Buchner funnel plate on the right -- anything that doesn't pass through is considered potential clog material. Gianmarco Chumbe/CNETFinally, I separated the samples and subjected them to a fan-drying process for a few hours to evaporate any remaining water from the wash. I recorded the final weight of each sample and compared it to its initial weight. The ratio of the final weight to the initial weight provided us with the dissolution efficiency of each drain cleaner product.

  • Those Star Trek-Style Humane AI Pins Will Stop Working by End of the Month
    www.cnet.com
If you're among the smallish group of people who own a Humane AI pin, start saying your goodbyes. The wearable device, which CNET writer Scott Stein compared to "an AI-powered Star Trek communicator pinned to your shirt," is on its way out.On Tuesday, Humane announced that it would stop selling the pins, after the company was acquired by HP Inc. And don't think you'll have a lot of time to wind down, either -- this is a pretty accelerated timeline.Read more:Humane AI Hands-On: My Life So Far With a Wearable AI Pin"Your Ai Pin will continue to function normally until 12 pm PST on February 28, 2025," Humane said in the statement. "After this date, it will no longer connect to Humane's servers, and .Center access will be fully retired."The AI Pin features will no longer include calling, messaging, AI queries and responses and cloud access, and on Feb. 28, all remaining consumer data will be deleted, the company said."We strongly encourage you to sync your Ai Pin over Wi-Fi and download any stored pictures, videos, and notes from .Center before February 28, 2025," the statement warns. "If you do not do this, your data will be lost upon deletion on February 28, 2025 at 12pm PST."A representative for Humane did not immediately respond to a request for comment.First-hand experienceCNET's Scott Stein reviewed the device back in April 2024, noting that the $699 pin seemed like science fiction, but was a chore to use."The ideas inside Humane's vision were interesting, but the execution -- and its total lack of connection with any phone -- made it feel absurd," Stein said on Tuesday. "Also it was hard to control, didn't work well and overheated extremely quickly."Stein enjoyed the language translation feature and said its camera quality was "fine but not great." The device did not respond to voice activation, and instead must be constantly tapped to be put into service. The pin could read things out loud, try to identify cars, plants and locations or describe a room, Stein said in his review. But not without issues. When he asked it to identify a can of Spindrift flavored sparkling water, it told him instead about a 2022 Apple TV Plus movie, possibly mishearing his asking the device to "look" for the movie's title, "Luck."

  • A Narrow Hallway Is the Star of This 1,023-Square-Foot Apartment
    www.architecturaldigest.com
A long and narrow hallway can be a challenge in any homeor in the hands of the right firm, a stylistic protagonist. The 1,023-square-foot apartment is in Milans Citt Studi neighborhood, in a typical building from the early 1900s. Its young owners were still new arrivals in the city when they found this abode, which retains many fascinating period elements, including parquet floors in two rooms and vintage cement tiles with classic designs. The main challenge of the home, however, was the hallway. The clients were unsure what to do with it, but we immediately decided that we couldnt just ignore it. Instead, we wanted to emphasize its proportions and length, turning it into a sort of promenade, explains Mario Abruzzese, founder of Kick.Office studio. In the hallway, custom cabinetry and hidden doors are painted in a matte lacquered rust color. The marble-chip floors by MIPA are in Tef from their Seeds collection. The Mini Glo-Ball hanging lamp is by Jasper Morrison for Flos and the Tropico wall lamp in opaline glass and metal is by Gabriele and Oscar Buratti for FontanArte. The long, narrow hallway was emphasized with a custom-made matte lacquered terracotta-colored installation and the addition of a powder-white barrel vault.Niches, built-in cabinets, and even a small home office can now be found in the long, narrow hallway. Clients increasingly want a dedicated workspace, or even two, in their homes, the architects say. We made the hallway more dramatic by creating a barrel vault and playing with a combination of a milk white and a very intense terracotta red. On the floor, we used marble chip tiles, a historical artifact in many Milan apartments, but here we used more contemporary colors, Kick.Office explains. The designers were also very particular when it came to the lighting, using a series of wall sconces that amplify the feeling of depth. Thus the entryway, now reimagined as a sort of promenade, becomes the backbone of the apartment as it leads to the living area.A view from the living room of a section of the hallway that now includes a home office. The teak shelving unit on the left is an Italian design from the 1960s. The Alanda coffee table in clear glass and black painted metal is by Paolo Piva for B&B Italia, the Wassily armchair is a design by Marcel Breuer (Knoll). On the small desk, a 1962 Marco vase of mold-blown etched glass vase by Sergio Asti for Salviati. The brass and mahogany table lamp is a 1950s design. The restored herringbone parquet floor is made with Italian oak and the marble chip tile floors are the Tef design from the Seeds collection by MIPA.False ceilings, which had been added after the original construction of the apartment, caused it to lose some of its generous proportions, but surviving stucco details and cornices were carefully restored. The layout of the apartment, however, was entirely reimagined. The sleeping area was moved to the back of the house that overlooks a quieter courtyard, while the living area now faces the street. The latter features restored Italian oak herringbone parquet flooring, and now includes a number of beautiful additions, like a Wassily chair designed by Marcel Breuer and a vintage shelving unit.Detail of Veneta Cucines forest green kitchen. The 265 lamp is by Paolo Rizzatto for Flos.In the living room, a 1960s Italian teak shelving unit, a Parentesi lamp by Achille Castiglioni and Pio Manz for Flos, an Alanda coffee table by Paolo Piva for B&B Italia, and a Wassily armchair by Marcel Breuer (Knoll).Next to it is the dining area with an open kitchen: We chose a dark green Veneta Cucine model with an ivory-colored quartz countertop, the design team explains. On one wall, hidden doors conceal the laundry, refrigerator, pantry, and oven. The dining room includes an LC6 glass table with black painted steel base by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand for Cassina, Cesca chairs by Breuer in chrome metal and rattan, a Diabolo hanging lamp by Achille Castiglioni for Flos in cherry red, and theres a 265 adjustable wall lamp by Paolo Rizzatto for Flos in the kitchen area. We didnt only furnish the long and narrow hallway. Throughout the entire home we wanted to create a mixture of custom designed furniture paired with both modern and classic pieces that make the best use of the space to create a functional architectural envelope, the architects add.The dining area with its open kitchen has an LC6 glass table with black painted steel base by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, and Charlotte Perriand for Cassina; Cesca chairs in chrome metal and rattan by Marcel Breuer for Knoll; and a Diabolo hanging lamp by Achille Castiglioni for Flos in cherry red.The bathrooms have their own surprises. They have been radically transformed, Kick.Office says. The shower, for example, has been carved out of a room where a kitchenette with a sink used to be. An oval door provides access to the large shower while a mirrored door in the closet area leads to the ensuite bathroom with toilet and sink. A glass-block wall separates the two bathroom spaces and allows light in while maintaining privacy.Vintage details and contemporary influences, along with restored details and radical new additions, improbably add up to a comfortable home that balances functionality and aesthetics. Here, excellent design is allowed to steal the show. This 1,023-square-foot apartment was originally published in AD Italy.A view of the primary bedroom from the en-suite bathroom, separated from it by a glass-block wall and a mirrored door. on the wall, Drawing 8 print by Ronan Bouroullec. • DOGE can keep accessing government data for now, judge rules
    www.theverge.com
A US federal judge declined to block Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) from accessing or transferring data from seven government agencies, or stop further firings of their workforce.DC District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan denied a temporary restraining order (TRO) sought by a group of 14 Democratic state attorneys general, led by New Mexico. The states had argued that Musk and DOGE have acted to trim the federal workforce, agency projects, and gain unprecedented data access without the proper authority. The Trump administration told the court that Musk is actually not an employee nor administrator of DOGE at all he is instead an employee of the separate White House Office and advisor to the president. Chutkan found the states couldnt meet the high standard for the emergency block by showing that theyd be irreparably harmed unless she stopped DOGE. Its not enough to posit the mere possibility that the group would take take actions that irreparably harm the states, she says.Still, Chutkan seems open to aspects of the states case. The AGs raise a colorable Appointments Clause claim with serious implications. Musk has not been nominated by the President nor confirmed by the U.S. Senate, as constitutionally required for officers who exercise significant authority pursuant to the laws of the United States, she writes. Accepting Plaintiffs allegations as true, Defendants actions are thus preciselythe Executive abuses that the Appointments Clause seeks to prevent. Chutkan also admonishes the Trump administration counsel in a footnote where she suggests an officials sworn declaration characterizing the authority that Trumps executive order creating DOGE contemplates appears to contradict the plain text of the order. Defense counsel is reminded of their duty to make truthful representations to the court, she writes. The states still have the opportunity to pursue the case on the merits, and file for a preliminary injunction. That would provide a new opportunity to seek to stop Musk and DOGEs access to the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), Departments of Commerce, Education, Energy, Labor, Health and Human Services (HHS), and Transportation. While we are disappointed that the court declined to issue a temporary restraining order, we remain committed to putting an end to Elon Musks unlawful power grab, New Mexico Attorney General Ral Torrez says in a statement. Every day that he is allowed to operate without a congressional mandate and with little apparent supervision, Musk is destabilizing our government and disrupting critical funding for education, public health and national security. His move fast and break things mentality is not only reckless, but also unconstitutional, and we are prepared to pursue this case for as long as it takes to bring this chaos to an end.See More:
