NetEase celebrates Marvel Rivals success by sacking director and staffGameCentralPublished February 19, 2025 10:27amUpdated February 19, 2025 10:27am Marvel Rivals success is no protection from the bean counters (NetEase Games)Despite being the most successful new live service game in years, Chinese owner NetEase has laid off the American developers responsible for Marvel Rivals.Online shooter Marvel Rivals is consistently in the top five most played games on Steam, often with over 300,000 concurrent players, and has been a massive hit on consoles too, with over 20 million free downloads.Given how many live service games crash and burn almost instantly youd imagine Chinese publisher NetEase would be over the moon with its performance. They probably are but their reward for the American team that made the game is not what you might imagine.Game director Thaddeus Sasser posted on LinkedIn that, This is such a weird industry My stellar, talented team just helped deliver an incredibly successful new franchise in Marvel Rivals for NetEase Games and were just laid off!Its unclear exactly how many people have lost their jobs, and NetEase has made no official announcement, but most of Sassers initial LinkedIn post is him trying to get level designer Garry McGee a new job.Welp, just got laid off from my job working on Marvel Rivals with NetEase, said fellow level designer Jack Burrows. Was an enormous pleasure to work with my American co-workers who join me in this sad culling. Just couldnt dodge that big boot I guess, no matter how big the success of the gig.Strange times all across the industry indeed, added McGee on LinkedIn.All of them refer to the ongoing series of layoffs that have swept across the games industry for well over a year now, in part as a result of companies over-staffing during Covid, when they thought (or at least pretended to investors) that the popularity of video games would remain the same once lockdown ended.Larger companies, such as Microsoft, Sony, and EA, have laid of hundreds, but that scale of cuts has subsided in recent months.More TrendingWhats especially baffling here is that Marvel Rivals is a live service game, so NetEase is going to be needing people to make new levels and other features for as long as its running. The only assumption can be that, now the games established, they want to do it cheaper in China but that seems extremely shortsighted given Sasser and his team have already proven themselves. The move may be the result of a wider shift at NetEase, as its made a number of cuts at its various Western studios recently, with Jar of Sparks (founded by Halo Infinite designer Jerry Hook), Worlds Untold (founded by Mass Effect writer Marc Walters), and Liquid Swords (founded by Avalanche Studios Christofer Sundberg) all suffering layoffs and being told to halt work.Over 25,000 game developers are thought to have lost their jobs since 2023 and, clearly, theres no end in sight. Its especially worrying as its made clear that making a highly successful game doesnt protect anyone from execs desperate for infinite growth at any cost. The purge continues (NetEase Games)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. To submit Inbox letters and Readers Features more easily, without the need to send an email, just use ourSubmit Stuff page here. For more stories like this, check our Gaming page.GameCentralSign up for exclusive analysis, latest releases, and bonus community content. This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply. • Independent Heritage Documentation: How Digital Tools and Photogrammetry Are Reshaping Preservation Efforts

Independent Heritage Documentation: How Digital Tools and Photogrammetry Are Reshaping Preservation EffortsSave this picture! Baej Pindor via Wikimedia Commons under CC by-SA 3.0 Unported licenseThe use of technology has become vital in the documentation and conservation of heritage, especially in difficult or urgent circumstances. After many landmarks of the historic city of Palmyra were destroyed during Syria's war in 2015, conservators built three-dimensional digital models of the destroyed city to aid its future reconstruction. The destruction of the Buddhas of Bamiyan in Afghanistan in 2001 with very little prior documentation prompted action in the documentation of vulnerable monuments, such as the establishment of CyArk. More recently, detailed digital surveys and a heritage BIM model were essential in the restoration of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris after it was devastated by fire in 2019.One of the digital tools used in these initiatives is photogrammetry. Put simply, photogrammetry is the process of obtaining measured information from photographs. Although it traces its origin to the nineteenth century, its use has been enhanced with the use of software and digital photography, with tools available to convert multiple photographs of an object or building into a three-dimensional model. These can include detailed color information capturing a lifelike appearance of the physical object. Drone footage can even be used to build context models in a fraction of the time to conduct surveys. Thus, it is an invaluable tool for conservators, archaeologists, and architects.Save this picture!Over time, the technology has become increasingly accessible. Combined with mobile phones, for example, it is possible to document heritage sites without large or sophisticated equipment and still achieve remarkable results. This was seen in the work of Deir ez-Zor Heritage Library where documentation of the historic city was primarily undertaken using mobile phones. The security conditions did not allow for the transport of large cameras or scanning equipment, so the team had to rely on simple tools. Related Article Somali Architecture Students Digitally Preserve Their Country's HeritageBefore It's Too Late This availability has prompted many independent groups to take documentation and conservation into their own hands. Mogasam is a project initiated by architect Karim Fouad in Cairo, Egypt. After a time in the UK where he completed his studies at the Architecture Association, he set up Mogasam in 2022 as a method of reconnecting with his home city. Initially, the focus was on simple items - traditional objects and antiques, doors, and parts of faades. This expanded to a study of lesser-known historic buildings, ones that are not listed as heritage assets or with much documentation. In Islamic Cairo, there has been a study on 'spolia', or the use of reclaimed stones from historic buildings. In this case, stones from Egypt's Pharaonic age could be seen embedded in much later buildings from the medieval period. Save this picture!Save this picture! With a building boom underway in Cairo, Mogasam identified a risk to undocumented historic buildings. Avoiding the complex process of obtaining surveying equipment and permissions for its use, mobile phone photography and photogrammetry software became invaluable tools for the documentation of buildings under threat. According to Karim Fouad, the fact that some of those buildings studied ended up being demolished highlighted the importance of the project. Thus, a library of three-dimensional digital models is underway with the intention of making it accessible to all. There are also circumstances, however, where even the use of small equipment such as mobile phones is not possible. In areas of active conflict, there is a reliance on collecting previously captured photographs, reviewing existing drawings, and sifting through archives. The Modern Sudan Collective (MSC), an independent, voluntary initiative of architects and researchers, has been studying the twentieth-century cinemas of Sudan. With the capital, Khartoum, still engulfed in conflict at the time of writing, it has not been possible to reach the sites let alone conduct any photography.Save this picture!Save this picture!Sudanese cinemas occupy a distinct place in the country's architectural history. The first one was built during colonial times near the army barracks for British soldiers in 1934. It was an open-air theatre, a design that set the trend for the next few decades of cinema construction. By the late 1970s, most neighborhoods in the capital and many towns across the country had a cinema. These performed not just as movie theatres, connecting audiences with productions made locally and internationally, but also as arenas for concerts and social events. They were very large, seating thousands of people, and had sleek designs reminiscent of Art Deco or Modernism. A coup d'etat in 1989 brought a hardline government that clamped down on cinemas, such that most of them lay derelict by the 2010s. Even attempts to revive them were in vain, as documented in the film Talking About Trees.Save this picture! Thus, when the team at MSC started documenting them, they had long been out of service and their role as a vital social amenity was a distant memory. On top of that, the war which started in 2023 made accessing most of the cinemas in Khartoum impossible. The cinemas had seldom been researched or surveyed, apart from a handful, such as Al Safia Cinema. Where possible, this information was gathered, but in most cases, historic and recent photographs had to be used to construct digital models using photogrammetry tools. The information was eventually used to build BIM models.Save this picture!Photogrammetry and other digital tools can therefore offer valuable opportunities for documentation in circumstances where previously it was simply not possible. Its reliance on small equipment was necessary for the Deir ez-Zour Heritage Library, while the spontaneity it afforded enabled the work of Mogasam. Its ability to synthesize models from previously captured photographs became a lifeline for extreme circumstances where access was limited, such as with the work of the Modern Sudan Collective.Save this picture!Image gallerySee allShow lessAbout this authorCite: Mohieldin Gamal. • Popular GTA 5 Mod Dev Doubts If The Takedown Request By Rockstar Is Genuine
    cgshares.com
RockstarThe Liberty City Preservation Project was a popular Grand Theft Auto 5 mod that recreates GTA 4s iconic Liberty City. It was hard work from Team World Travel, who decided to offer the project for free to the community. However, soon after it was released after a few years of development, the team had to take it down due to a request from the copyright owner and developer of the game, Rockstar. But this doesnt mean the end of the story; it turns out to be the beginning of a wild drama. Recently, a website, which presents a lengthy essay themed The Fall Of FiveM, appeared online and caused a whirling discussion. Behind the friendly, smiling, snail mascot of FiveM youll find many dark secrets, it reads.Among the many who were shocked by whats written in the essay is nkjellman, the lead developer of World Travel. They wrote a long message in a now-gone Discord Channel about the situation. Its said that initial communications with a representative from Rockstar Games were professional. As per the request of the representative, the team removed the mod links due to legal concerns. However, after two meetings between the mod team and Rockstar and several emails discussing their future collaboration, Rockstars representative became unresponsive. Not long after, the team spotted some paid Liberty City mods appeared, some of which might cost 500 euros. One mod even has detailed GTA 4 assets like props, custom scenarios, animated signs, etc.; thats unusual because these mods have always replaced the props with GTA V props. This is a strange coincidence, thought nkjellman, who forwarded the link of the project to the representative. Its claimed that its been forwarded to the enforcement team at Rockstar, but nkjellman is now not sure if this truly happened. With all these happening, nkjellman said they would not be surprised if someone is getting a slice of the pie. As for Team World Travel, theyre now unsure if the takedown request is genuine.Things seem to be becoming a bit ridiculous now, considering a key fact brought up by the essay: someone from inside the FiveM team contributed to the projects takedown. The discussion continues as Rockstar has not yet provided a statement about the situation.Join our80 Level Talent platformand ournew Discord server, follow us onInstagram,Twitter,LinkedIn,Telegram,TikTok, andThreads, where we share breakdowns, the latest news, awesome artworks, and more.Source link The post Popular GTA 5 Mod Dev Doubts If The Takedown Request By Rockstar Is Genuine appeared first on CG SHARES.
