• Its Spider-Man and Wolverine against the Janus Directory in new Marvel team up series
    www.polygon.com
Writer Marc Guggenheim (X-Men Gold) and artist Kaare Andrews (Iron Fist: The Living Weapon) are the team up bringing you Marvel Comics latest team up series, Spider-Man & Wolverine. Spider-Man and Wolverine are probably my two favorite Marvel characters to write, Guggenheim told Polygon via email, and among my favorites in all of comics. I wrote Peter and Logan very early in my career, so Im particularly excited about returning to them with a great deal more of experience and skill to lend to the endeavor. Kaare Andrews and I are determined to deliver a comic book blockbuster every month, with action that never stops. What brings the chatty web slinger and the taciturn claw snikt-er together this time? A little something called the Janus Directory, Guggenheim wrote, a comprehensive database of all the undercover operatives, past and present, who have been active in the Marvel Universe. This, of course, includes Logan. Or, as Marvels official summary put it: THWIKT!Did you hear that? That sound can only mean one thing: two of your favorite Marvel heroes doing what they do best! With great power, there must also comethe best there is! SPIDER-MAN & WOLVERINE team up for the biggest adventure in Marvel comics! Who or what is targeting this unlikely duo, and what can they do to stop it? Get ready for a nonstop thrill ride of big villains, bigger threats and even bigger surprises as LOGAN and PETER PARKER team up against the machinations of a plot too big for just one heroCourtesy of Marvel Comics, Polygon can also reveal the main (Andrews) and three variant covers (Mark Bagley, Clayton Crain, and David Marquez) for Spider-Man & Wolverine #1 below. Spider-Man and Wolverine have always attracted the best artists in comics, Andrews told Polygon via email, and Im pulling from all of them [] But honestly, its not just about individual artistsits about the era that shaped me. The late 80s and early 90s comics were a huge influence, and thats where I first fell in love with the medium. When I post these images, Andrews went on, I get comments like, I see Todd [McFarlane] here!, looks a little like Erik Larson!, Inspired by Silvestri?, Sam Kieth!, Jim Lee!, Campbell!, Liefeld, Adams, the Kuberts, and its yes-yes-yes-yes!!! All of them. Im soaking in those influences and squeezing that juice straight onto the page. I am totally unconcerned with movie adaptations or TV shows; this is about pure comics, the way it was meant to be. Finally, at last, again!Spider-Man & Wolverine #1 hits shelves on May 7.

  • What is the max level cap in Avowed?
    www.polygon.com
Theres a max level cap in Avowed, meaning you cant unlock literally every ability in the game at once.Upon leveling up, youll earn an ability point to upgrade your abilities or unlock a new one. Attribute points are earned every level until level 10 from which theyre earned every other level and can be used to improve your characters stats. However, you cannot over-level your character to the point where they can drop meteor showers, spin like a whirlwind, and unleash a flurry of blows every other second as there is a max level cap.Heres the max level cap is in Avowed, plus some details about what it means to reach it.What is the max level in Avowed? The max level cap in Avowed is level 30. According to Game8, youll need to accrue 449,500 experience points to hit level 30. To see how much experience youve earned to-date, open the Character menu and find the experience section in the header. It may be disappointing to hear theres a level cap in Avowed, but frankly, youll need to do almost everything in the game from side quests to collectibles to even come close to reaching it. On my first playthrough, I completed every quest, found every treasure map and god totem, completed everything in the sidebar checklists, and yet, I still only reached level 28 in the final zone.Polygons Avowed reviewer, meanwhile, finished the game at level 23, though they primarily focused on the main story. But, as of this writing, a different Polygon writer whos been completing all side quests and optional content is in the penultimate area, and only at level 24.For most players, youll finish Avowed below level 30. For those that do reach level 30, itll be in the games last zone, so you wont have much time to feel the effects of any new abilities and attributes youve earned. At level 30, if you respec, youll have 29 ability points and 27 attribute points to play around with. Depending on a few choices you made during your playthrough (like if you accept or deny the Voices power), you may have more points to spend. Your companions will have a maximum of eight ability points across their four abilities, but youll unlock all eight points before reaching level 30.For more Avowed guides, heres the what background to pick, best attribute points to pick, best class abilities to get first, plus explainers on how to parry and play third-person, and a full Avowed walkthrough.

  • An Accenture Office in Montreal Reflects the Energy of the City
    design-milk.com
Professional services and consulting company Accenture has offices in every corner of the globe, each not only personalized to support business but to also reflect a particular location, with unique elements and artwork. Lemay was tapped to design the new headquarters in Montreal, Canada, which captures the dynamism of the workforce and the urban landscape. Located on the 15th floor of the Place Ville Marie cruciform tower downtown, it balances references to the city with brand standards. Theres a strong link to where the office is situated, the employees, and the work that they do, says Carolyne Thibault, interior design project director for Lemay.Notable art installations served as inspiration, like Claude Cormiers The Ring, a massive circular sculpture that can be seen from the office. As soon as visitors enter the 19,000-square-foot workplace, they are greeted by a custom wall composed of 1,200 interactive trigonal prisms in Accentures signature colors including the purple hue of its logo.As natural light cascades in, ever-changing reflections pulse with movement. This element sets the tone, reinforcing the companys connection to the area, while also echoing the forward-thinking culture. The interiors double as a canvas, with white walls and a bespoke felt ceiling to amplify the vibrant complementary tones of the furniture, from forest green to burnt sienna. The design team hosted a series of discovery sessions with staff members and management to ensure that there were a variety of work points. Flexible spaces are ideal for informal meetings and socializing during the day, while focus rooms and booths offer more privacy when needed. One highlight is what Thibault calls the spa room. Decorated with a cloud motif, the meeting room is anything but typical. The interior evokes the sensation of floating in the sky, surrounded by soothing blue tints that create a sense of well-being.At the caf and in the other communal hubs, lush hanging gardens bring nature indoors in a more sophisticated way. Users can complete tasks or enjoy meals in these airy settings that call to mind the notable green space in the city, designed by Frederick Law Olmstead, Parc du Mont-Royal.Curbed corners add softness and connect to each area, whether at the IT solutions bar, in seating lounges, or library shelving. For Hani Diab, concept director at Lemay, the playful moments are built in with an unmistakable energy that aligns with what happens outside. The office is whimsical, because we played with elements of surprise to represent Montreal, he notes. For more information on Accenture Montreal or Lemay, visit lemay.com.Photography by Claude-Simon Langlois, courtesy of v2com.

  • The Differences Between a Slow Cooker and Dutch Oven (and When to Use Each)
    lifehacker.com
We may earn a commission from links on this page. There was a time when I would confuse the terms Dutch oven and slow cooker. I couldnt tell you why, but it was probably because I had never really operated either of them before and these vague, old-timey titles fused together in my mind. (I envisioned a cauldron over a fire.) Well, let the record show that theyre not the same. Not only are they completely dissimilar in appearances, but they specialize in somewhat different cooking tasks. HBoth cookers are known for their slow and steady cooking properties, and due to their deep shape, the Dutch oven and slow cooker are both good candidates for high-moisture foods. The biggest difference is that one is a proper electronic appliance, and one is, well, a pot.The slow cooker Credit: Allie Chanthorn Reinmann What is it?The slow cooker is a cooking appliance that includes a lightweight (usually aluminum) housing with an electric heating element at the bottom. Theres always a heavy ceramic vessel that sits snugly into the housing and this is where the food cooks. Oh, and theres a lid. The lid fits loosely and that seems like a mistake at first, but its not supposed to be tightsteam is supposed to gently escape during cooking. On the front of every slow cooker is a control panel. This might be a simple rotating dial, or it could be a whole digital display with buttons and a timer. The settings are usually high, low, keep warm, and the amount of time its cooking for. Here's the one I have, and it works well for me. Hamilton Beach Four-Quart Slow Cooker $46.99 at Amazon Shop Now Shop Now $46.99 at Amazon When to use your slow cooker The electric heating element in the housing gently heats the ceramic interior vessel to a range just around boiling. Depending on the model, low temperature might be around 200F and it may only go as high as 300F. With temperatures this low and gentle, you can see why its called a slow cooker. Most things that go in will take over an hour to cook. That makes this appliance great for hands-off cooking where you want flavors to deepen and meld, and tough meats that would benefit from the tenderization of low, slow heat.Where the slow cooker really shines is with set-it-and-forget-it cooking and keeping foods warm for a long period of time. Since its not cooked on the stove and the entire heating mechanism is enclosed, the slow cooker is safe to leave on the counter unattended. (As long as you trust your cats to leave it alone. Its a gamble for me.) The slow cooker can be a huge helper when you need to free up the stove and oven, like for Thanksgiving. I think the keep warm function is the biggest boon for party hosting. Ill keep a huge tank of Swedish meatballs warm in a large slow cooker, and a small batch of mulled glgg steaming in another.Set up the slow cooker for:Bean soupsStews with tough cuts of meatChiliMeatballs in gravyMulled wine or other hot beveragesYou wouldnt use the slow cooker for anything that needs to be done quickly, or anything that requires high heat. For example, you cant sear something in the slow cooker. Its a better tool for boiling, steaming, or keeping moist foods and drinks warm. The Dutch oven Credit: Allie Chanthorn Reinmann What is it?A Dutch oven is not an appliance at all. Im willing to bet that the word oven in the title is what throws off most people. In the simplest terms, its a heavy-duty cast iron pot with a lid. There are no moving parts, no plugs, and no instruction manual. The fanciest thing about it is the enamel glaze that can come in a rainbow of colors and makes the interior somewhat non-stick. Ive been pretty obsessed with mine this winter. My Dutch oven was a gift and it has no brand name (many of the affordable ones are just as good as the fancy ones), but if I were to buy another one it would probably be a Lodge. Lodge Six-Quart Enameled Dutch Oven $79.90 at Amazon Shop Now Shop Now $79.90 at Amazon When to use itThe Dutch oven excels at holding onto heat for long periods of time and distributing it evenly because of its dense walls. Theyre also oven-safe up to 500F (and maybe higher, depending on the brand). That makes this pot great for anything that needs to be cooked for a long period of time, any meals that move from the stove top to the oven, or things that benefit from roasting in an enclosed space in the oven. The Dutch oven is a great vessel for frying since the thick metal retains heat better than a thin pot. You wont have to keep messing with the flame to maintain a 350F temperature. My favorite things to throw in Ol Dutchie are bread for the increased oven spring (the final rise a loaf of bread does in the oven) and soup or stew. If youre in need of a recipe, my crispy chicken and rice recipe really shows off what the Dutch oven is capable of.Pull out the Dutch oven for:Braised meatsRoasted meatsSauces or soups that simmer at a low temperatureDeep fryingBread bakingYou wouldnt use the Dutch oven for anything that you want to cook quickly because it takes so long for the metal to come up to temperature. Frying eggs, quick stir-fried noodle dishes, and whipping up grilled cheese sandwiches are still best done in a classic frying pan. How to choose between the twoThe next time you're making pulled pork, stew, or white bean chili, you could reach for either cooking tool. When deciding between the two I usually ask myself a few questions: Do I want to do a little work or practically no work, are there tough cuts of meat I'd like to tenderize, and how much time do I have until I want to eat? If I have a few hours or tough bits of beef to cook, I'll probably dump the ingredients in the slow cooker. If I want to eat within the hour and/or the meal has seared and simmered elements, I'll likely turn to my Dutch oven.

  • EV truck maker Nikola has finally called it quits
    www.engadget.com
The embattled EV truck maker Nikola is going kaput. The company just announced a filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and a plan to sell off assets. These assets will be sold at an auction, pending court approval. Nikola noted it has $47 million in cash on hand to fund the bankruptcy proceedings and begin the sale process. The company has reported between $500 million to $1 billion in assets, but liabilities totaling $1 billion to $10 billion, according to a court filing.Like other companies in the electric vehicle industry, we have faced various market and macroeconomic factors that have impacted our ability to operate, said Steve Girsky, President and CEO of Nikola. Those market and macroeconomic factors are real, as EV adoption growth rates have slowed a bit. However, Nikola is a special case. The company has been embroiled in numerous scandals in recent years, so this news caps off a particularly dire fall from grace for the once-buzzy EV maker.Nikola was founded in 2015 with a mission to create zero-emissions heavy trucks. The company secured a lucrative partnership with GM in 2020, but things fell apart soon thereafter. It was credibly accused of fraud, thanks to a report by short-selling firm Hindenburg Research. This report even included a video showing a Nikola truck rolling down a hill to simulate driving. Our investigation of the site and text messages from a former employee reveal that the video was an elaborate ruse $NKLA had the truck towed to the top of a hill on a remote stretch of road and simply filmed it rolling down the hill. pic.twitter.com/n2NLDGInzR Hindenburg Research (@HindenburgRes) September 10, 2020 This elaborate ruse caused the SEC to begin an investigation which led to founder Trevor Milton stepping down as board chair and CEO. Later, he was arrested and indicted on fraud charges. Milton was found guilty and sentenced to four years in prison. The company settled with the SEC for $125 million. It goes without saying that GM backed out of that partnership. The company did go public in 2020 and began shipping its first trucks in 2021. However, reports indicated that Nikola was losing hundreds of thousands of dollars on every truck it sold. All told, the company only made around 600 vehicles, many of which were recalled due to a variety of defects. This subpar performance caused the stock to crater, stumbling from a high of over $1,000 per share to, as of this writing, $0.47 per share. I guess only one company named after the guy who invented alternating current (AC) energy is allowed to consistently fall below expectations without making a dent on its valuation. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/transportation/evs/ev-truck-maker-nikola-has-finally-called-it-quits-172516625.html?src=rss

  • The iPhone 16e vs. the competition
    www.engadget.com
The new iPhone 16e is designed to get Apple Intelligence into as many hands as possible. Apple recently began activating its AI features by default during iOS setup, suggesting a harder push to spur adoption and establish iOS as an AI-first platform. Putting the companys suite of AI tools on a $599 iPhone should do the trick. Apple Intelligences arrival on an entry-level iPhone is thanks to one of its biggest upgrades from the SE: the A18 chip (the same processor from the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus). That makes it Apples cheapest AI-equipped model by $300. However, that's quite a bump up from the (now-retired) iPhone SE's $429. Fortunately, theres no skimping on the Apple Intelligence features for the cheaper model; you get all the AI goodies found in the more expensive iPhones. That includes AI writing tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, Visual Intelligence, ChatGPT integration and notification summaries. Apple The phone has a much bigger display than its predecessor: 6.1 inches, up from the 2022 iPhone SEs mere 4.7 inches. Its also the first entry-level model to adopt modern iPhones full-screen design with Face ID. (Pour one out for the now-retired home button.) However, it doesnt have the Dynamic Island found on recent higher-end models. It also gets the Action button, the customizable physical shortcut on the phone's side. It debuted in the iPhone 15 Pro series and is found in all iPhone 16 models. The iPhone 16e also complies with EU standards by switching from Lightning to USB-C, which is probably the least surprising thing about it. It also lacks MagSafe charging, sticking with standard Qi wireless charging at up to 7.5W. A list of geeky tech specs doesnt tell the whole story but can still serve as a starting point. Heres how the new entry-level iPhone compares to Apples previous model and its two biggest Android-running rivals: the Google Pixel 8a and Samsung Galaxy A35 5G. (Although the A35 isn't quite in the same price range, it serves a similar niche in Samsung's lineup.) iPhone 16e iPhone SE (2022) Google Pixel 8a Samsung Galaxy A35 5G Price $599 / $699 / $899 $429 / $479 / $579 $499 / $559 $400 Dimensions 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.8 mm (5.78 x 2.82 x 0.31 inches) 138.4 x 67.3 x 7.3 mm (5.45 x 2.65 x 0.29 inches) 152.1 x 72.7 x 8.9mm (6 x 2.9 x 0.4 inches) 161.7 x 78 x 8.2 mm (6.37 x 3.07 x 0.32 inches) Weight 167g (5.88 ounces) 144g (5.09 ounces) 188 g (6.7 oz) 209 g (7.37 oz) Screen size 6.1 inches 4.7 inches 6.1 inches 6.6 inches Screen resolution 2,532 x 1,170 (460 ppi) 1,334 x 750 (326 ppi) 1,080 x 2,400 (430 ppi) 2,340 x 1,080 (389 ppi) Screen type OLED Retina HD LCD 60Hz Super AMOLED up to 120Hz SoC Apple A18 Apple A15 Bionic Tensor G3 Exynos 1380 RAM N/A 4 GB 8 GB 6 / 8* GB * Non-US only Battery "up to 26 hrs video playback" 2,018mAh 4,492 mAh 5,000 mAh Storage 128 / 256 / 512GB 64 / 128 / 256 GB 128 / 256 GB 128 / 256* GB MicroSD up to 1TB * Non-US only Rear camera(s) 48MP, f/1.6 Wide: 12 MP, f/1.8 Wide: 64 MP, f/1.89 Ultrawide: 13MP, f/2.2 Wide: 50MP, f/1.8 Ultrawide: 8MP, f/2.2 Macro: 5MP, f/2.4 Front camera 12MP, f/1.9 7 MP, f/2.2 13MP, f/2.2 13MP, f/2.2 Water / dust rating IP68 IP67 IP67 IP67 Wi-Fi WiFi 6 (802.11ax) 802.11ax Wi-Fi 6E Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) Bluetooth v5.3 v5.0 v5.3 v5.3 OS iOS 18 iOS 18 Android 15 Android 14 One UI 6.1 Colors / finish Black / White Aluminum Midnight / Starlight / (Product)Red Aluminum Obsidian / Porcelain / Aloe / Bay Navy / Lilac This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/mobile/smartphones/the-iphone-16e-vs-the-competition-171306115.html?src=rss
