• iOS 18.4 lets you set default iPhone apps in these new categories
    9to5mac.com
Apples push to make the iPhone more customizable and personal has brought a new iOS 18.4 feature: now there are two new categories for setting default apps, depending on where you live.Translation default available broadly, while Navigation is limited to the EUApple has offered some form of default app controls in the Settings app for years. But recently in iOS 18.2, the feature expanded with new categories and a dedicated hub.Now in iOS 18.4, the category options are growing again.Translation is a new category available in the US and abroad, letting you change the default from Apples Translate app to a third-party option like Google Translate. And if youre in the EU, youll see a second long-anticipated addition: Navigation. Its a shame that Navigation is restricted to EU users, but if you do happen to live in the EU youll be able to change your iPhones default from Apple Maps to another option, such as Google Maps.Default app categories all work a bit differently, but generally speaking, your default app will be used by links and built-in OS tools you encounter system-wide for performing a certain function. For example, if you change your Navigation default to Waze, tapping an address your friend sends you in an iMessage should open that location directly in your preferred app.Default apps can be configured on your iPhone by opening Settings Apps Default Apps.Do you plan to change default apps in iOS 18.4? • iOS 18.4 enables Priority Notifications, a new Apple Intelligence feature
    9to5mac.com
iOS 18.4 brings Apple Intelligence support to a lot of new languages, expands Image Playgrounds with a new style, and also includes another AI addition: Priority Notifications.Priority Notifications in iOS 18.4: The most important alerts go to the topPriority Notifications is an Apple Intelligence feature designed to help you get your notifications under control. While Apple offers a variety of tools to micromanage notifications to your liking, enabling or disabling them for certain apps, or in different Focus modes, this new Apple Intelligence feature aims to do the work for you.Off by default in iOS 18.4 beta 1, you can enable the feature by going to:the Settings apptapping Notificationsopening Prioritize Notificationsthen enable the featureHeres a summary of what it can do:Apple Intelligence can show you notifications that may be important in a separate section on the Lock Screen, so you can catch up on what you may have missed. You can still swipe up to view all notifications.Basically, your iPhone uses on-device intelligence to analyze the importance of various notifications, and puts ones deemed especially important into a new section that sits atop your other notifications.Normally, iOS sorts notifications based on how new they are, with the most recent alerts right at the top. But with Prioritize Notifications enabled, the most important alerts are shown first regardless of how long ago you received them.If youve used the new Mail apps priority mail feature, where certain messages deemed important are elevated to the top of your inboxPriority Notifications basically works just like that. Are you going to enable Priority Notifications in iOS 18.4? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments.Best iPhone accessoriesAdd 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links. • After Zuckerberg's Cringey Hypebeast Makeover, the Average Person Still Finds Him Repulsive
    futurism.com
Thanks to his cringey makeover, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg clearly thinks he's had his "glow up" moment but to the average average American,he's still chopped liver. As the Pew Research Center reports, a new poll looking at Zuckerberg alongside fellow beloathed billionaire Elon Musk has shown that 67 percent, or roughly two-thirds of Americans surveyed, said they feel "unfavorable" towards the 40-year-old Facebook founder. What's more, a whopping 26 percent said they feel veryunfavorable towards him as well, suggesting that more than a quarter of Americans really, really do not like that man.Between January 27 and February 3 of this year, Pew contacted more than 5,000 people by telephone or online to ask them about their familiarity and favorability rankings for various political and business figures. The polling comes afterZuckerberg's semi-recent image turn from the robotic nerd who loved Sweet Baby Ray's hot sauce to the most pre-divorced man Silicon Valley has ever seen, as his seeming midlife crisis led him to design his own t-shirts, wear glitzy gold chains, and get an unbecoming broccoli haircut. The wild thing, according to these new figures: none of those attempts at a new image appear to have done anything to warm his public perception.Just look at polling from The Tech Oversight Project last year, which found that about 65 percent of roughly 500 people polled viewed Zuckerberg unfavorably meaning he's actually now slightly more despised than before his Hypebeast makeover. One could perhaps forgive the 40-year-old Facebook founder were his new vibe merely aesthetic, but it seems to be a byproduct of a reactionary shift that isn't just limited to stupid comments about "masculine energy" on broey podcasts. In the months since debuting his new look, Zuckerberg has rebranded Meta as essentially anti-woke a move, perhaps, that results from his violent rivalry with Musk and rolled back all its diversity guidelines in favor of "free speech" rules that allow for way more hate speech on its platforms. While the average American is, per this Pew poll, clearly unimpressed with Zuck's new schtick, those within the tech industry were apparently wooed by his "chadification.""Theres a cool factor that didnt exist before," tech investor Brianne Kimmel toldthe Washington Post last year of Zuck's newfound swag, "and now male tech CEOs have a playbook to achieve similar results."The emperor's new clothes even resonated with one of his former executives, who toldWaPo without a hint of irony that Zuckerberg is "living his best life."Back in the real world, though, everyday people aren't buying it al all so much so that Zuckerberg is still more unpopular than Musk, whose favorability per the Pew poll sits at 54 percent, while he lives and breathes the right-wing dream in Trump's White House.Share This Article

  • Elon Musk Got Humiliated by a Space Station Astronaut Immediately Before Announcing Space Station Should Be Destroyed
    futurism.com
Immediately prior to calling for the imminent destruction of the International Space Station, Elon Musk got into a heated fight with an astronaut from the orbital outpost.Let's set the scene. Earlier this week, an interview with Elon Musk and President Donald Trump aired on Fox News. When the topic swung to the fates of NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore, who have been aboard the ISS for eight months due to the failure of Boeing's Starliner spacecraft, Musk and Trump implied that the Biden administration had abandoned them on purpose."They were left up there for political reasons," Musk said in the interview. This didn't sit well with Andreas Mogensen, a European Space Agency astronaut who served as the ISS commander between September 2023 and March 2024.Responding to Musk's claims on X, Mogensen wrote: "What a lie. And from someone who complains about lack of honesty from the mainstream media."Musk, in return, had a complete meltdown. "You are fully r*tarded," he told Mogensen, using a slur against people with intellectual disabilities. "SpaceX could have brought them back several months ago. I OFFERED THIS DIRECTLY to the Biden administration and they refused."Unfazed by the vitriol coming from the world's richest man, Mogensen, who also piloted a SpaceX mission to the ISS in 2023, calmly pushed back."You know as well as I do, that Butch and Suni are returning with Crew-9, as has been the plan since last September," Mogensen wrote, referring to the SpaceX capsule. "Even now, you are not sending up a rescue ship to bring them home. They are returning on the Dragon capsule that has been on ISS since last September."To fill in for those out of the loop: there's already a spacecraft docked at the ISS, the Crew-9 Dragon capsule, that's scheduled to bring the astronauts home. It wouldn't make any sense to spend hundreds of millions of more dollars to send up another one just to bring two astronauts back slightly sooner. Musk is trying to make a mountain out of a molehill over the fact that the original February date for the return mission was pushed back a month during Biden's last weeks in office but this was done to give Musk's own company, SpaceX, more time to get its next Crew-10 mission ready, which will be bringing Williams' and Wilmore's replacements.Musk didn't have a response for Mogensen. But just three hours later he tweeted this: "It is time to begin preparations for deorbiting the [Space Station]. It has served its purpose. There is very little incremental utility.""Let's go to Mars," Musk added. To be clear, NASA has already put the plans in motion to decommission the aging ISS, which has served longer than it was originally designed to; in June, the space agency tapped Musk's SpaceX, in fact, to construct a vehicle to deorbit it. But the original schedule is to accomplish this by 2030. Musk is saying we should can the station now"The decision is up to the President, but my recommendation is as soon as possible. I recommend 2 years from now," Musk said in a followup tweet. The timing of this pivot is absolutely not a coincidence; Musk really is that petty.More on billionaire BS: Elon Musk Just Caused a Huge Headache for the New Head of NASAShare This Article

  • Mark Zuckerbergs makeover didnt make people like him, study shows
    techcrunch.com
A study by the Pew Research Center found that Americans views of Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg skew more negative than positive. While Zuckerberg has sparked chatter in Silicon Valley with his sudden interest in high fashion, the Meta CEO is less popular than President Trumps right-hand man, Elon Musk, the report found. While about 54% of U.S. adults say they have an unfavorable view of Musk, 67% feel negatively toward Zuckerberg. The two tech executives have come under increased scrutiny since the start of President Trumps second term; both sat alongside the president at his inauguration and made donations to his inauguration fund. While Zuckerberg has upended long-standing Meta content moderation policies to limit fact-checking and action against hate speech, Musk has played a key role in Trumps camp thus far.Throughout the first month of Trumps presidency, Musk has directly involved himself in the U.S. government operations, using his political connections to gut government departments like USAID, which provides humanitarian aid around the world. Musks DOGE meanwhile on Monday overstated the impact of its budget cuts by billions of dollars.Given Musks affiliation with Trump, it follows that along party lines, 85% of respondents who are Democrats or who lean Democratic held unfavorable views of the Tesla CEO. Meanwhile, 73% of Republican or Republican-aligned respondents felt favorably toward Musk. But Zuckerberg, the Facebook founder, is more universally disliked, though he draws more ire from the left-leaning demographic. While 60% of Republican and Republican-leaning respondents hold an unfavorable view of Zuckerberg, 76% of their Democratic counterparts share that sentiment. So, while Zuck may be playing the part of the cool guy, Americans havent been fooled by his gold chains or musical ambitions, it seems.Pews study involved a panel of 5,086 randomly selected U.S. adults. The survey was conducted from January 27, 2025, through February 2, 2025, so these responses reflect peoples recent opinions.
