RTAndrew PriceThis week/month in 3D...Blenders announces plans for 2025A big focus this year is on tools to empower studios, by adding project wide variables, override improvements, storyboarding tools and layered animation. Artists will love performance improvements to Eevee shader compilation (thank God), sculpting layers and hair dynamics. Oh and 5.0 is coming in November! Read the full list here: https://www.blender.org/development/projects-to-look-forward-to-2025 Also, the conference has been moved to September (yay!) so you no longer have to decide between Halloween or Blender Blender movie earns global awardsWith a tiny budget of just $4M, Flow is turning heads for being made entirely with open source 3d software. Its already got a Golden Globe and might win the Oscar next week. A masterclass in efficient storytelling: a small group of characters, one key environment, and no dialogue. It wont appeal to everyone, but I was surprised at how much I liked it. And its borderline magic. Some of my favs from the community: bobcat, motorcycle, snowy house, accessible here: https://superspl.at/Read documentation and usage on the Github: https://github.com/playcanvas/supersplat?tab=readme-ov-fileHow a Japanese studio is embracing AI while retaining human controlTheir workflow is to feed it a start and an end frame, then use proprietary AI trained on their own content to generate the in-between frames, which they then manually paint over. Without AI, the work would take a minimum of one week to ten days. Using AI, it is about four of five hours. Theres lots of negativity on this story, but Im an optimist. I dont think teams will get smaller in the long term, I think visions will get larger. And it will kickstart countless smaller indie projects that would otherwise never see the light, in the same way that falling CG costs have exploded usage across all industries today.Watch the video (3-mins): https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/videos/20241209155445347/index.html'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' is a VFX masterpieceNearly every character is CG, covered in hair, and in a real-world environment that is often rapidly moving water. Yet somehow, almost every frame is perfect. Hats off to Weta yet again. Hopefully they win the Oscar. They just uploaded a VFX Breakdown, mocap segment, and simulation segment.Watch the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3spicj1i2e8PS. Want this delivered weekly in your inbox?
