• The Finishing Touch in This Robert A.M. SternDesigned House? Major Art
    www.elledecor.com
Modernism is not the first word that comes to mind when you think of the work of Robert A.M. Stern. The architectural titan has built his reputation as a classicist whose residential design skews decidedly traditional. But its worth remembering that Stern, a former dean of the Yale School of Architecture, was, in the 1970s and 80s, a pioneer of postmodernism, a style that melded classical elements with contemporary flair. What has linked every one of his projects is an intimate understanding of visual culture through time.Frank Frances StudioIn the great room, a sofa by Anthony Lawrence-Belfair and chairs by Roman Thomas surround a DeMuro Das cocktail table. A Joan Mitchell painting hangs above the fireplace, and the ceiling is clad in pecky cypress. Now, working with the interior designer Ellie Cullman, Stern and his team have unveiled a project that is a definite departure: a Florida vacation home for an art collecting couple that takes tropical modernism as its antecedent, with a side of mid-20th-century regionalism. And with a house that is itself a tour de force, the architecture in a sense dictated what works to display. Once they saw the home, the owners started over. The art was mostly purchased specifically for this house, because the proportions dictated much larger pieces, Cullman says. Roger H. Seifter, the partner at Robert A.M. Stern Architects (RAMSA) who led the design, says one inspiration was a villa the homeowners had rented on St. Barts. The couple, who have worked with Sterns firm for more than 25 years on several homes, loved the island homes simplicity and sense of calm, and they asked for a similar ambiance for a vacation house on an oceanfront property north of Miami. Frank Frances StudioIn an ocean-facing guestroom, the club chair and ottoman are by Anthyony Lawrence-Belfair. Bed linens by C&C Milano; 1950s Italian chandelier; curtain fabric by Kravet; rug by Doris Leslie Blau. The centerpiece of the 12,000-square-foot, two-story house is a top floor great room that opens onto a loggia, with doors that retract into walls and large-scale artworks placed in key positions. For inspiration Seifter looked to two pioneers of Hawaiian modernism, Vladimir Ossipoff and Charles William Dickey, as well as to California architect William Wilson Wurster, whose houses were known for their open plans, unadorned natural materials, and close attention to site. In this project, walls are in bleached walnut, the ceiling is sheathed in pecky cypress, and the floors are reclaimed limestone and antique oak. Its a very tactile house, Seifter says. Were taking what we have learned from the past and bringing it into the presentCullman stepped in to bring warmth and livability to the peaceful house. While she too has a reputation for traditional decor, she has been experimenting with more modern styles. Were taking what we have learned from the past and bringing it into the present, she says. Here, textiles in solids, checks, and circles introduce a graphic quality to the home, creating a pleasant tension with the organic shapes of the landscape. The palette, while mostly neutral, is accented with soft wisps of ocean blue, pistachio green, and pale yellow. The couples longtime decorator, John Gilmer, assisted on finishing touches. Take a Tour of This Stunning Modernist HouseThe decor complements the homeowners blue-chip collection of 20th-century art, which includes works by Roy Lichtenstein, Alice Neel, Stanley Whitney, and Pat Steir, assembled with help from the art advisor Nancy Rosen. A sculpture by Harry Bertoia in the stair hall echoes the verticality of the two-story window behind it, and a Joan Mitchell painting above the living room fireplace provides a focal point. In the game room downstairs, a painting by Jennifer Bartlett mirrors the pale yellow, luscious green, and sunset orange of the landscape outside. Courtesy of RAMSAArchitectural drawings of the house by Seifter.Courtesy of RAMSAArchitectural drawings of the house by Seifter. In this way the architecture provides a frame for the artworks, and the huge canvases help animate the building around them. The result is a house that is as relaxed as it is layered, as refined as it is comfortable. And even if the project was a departure, both RAMSA and Cullman rose to the occasion by doing what they do best: bringing ideas (and proportions) from the past into the present to create a home that feels both classic and up-to-date. This was very different for all of us, Cullman says. But in a way it was liberating. This story originally appeared in the March 2025 issue of Elle Decor. SUBSCRIBE

While several schools had 1:1 programs, the iPad (and its $499 price point) kickstarted the mobility revolution. The iPad was a hit with students and teachers alike, but managing iPads at scale was, to put it mildly, a logistical nightmare for IT teams.About Apple @ Work:Bradley Chambers managed an enterprise IT network from 2009 to 2021. Through his experience deploying and managing firewalls, switches, a mobile device management system, enterprise grade Wi-Fi, 1000s of Macs, and 1000s of iPads, Bradley will highlight ways in which Apple IT managers deploy Apple devices, build networks to support them, train users, stories from the trenches of IT management, and ways Apple could improve its products for IT departments.Apples device management infrastructure was at the heart of this early chaos. In some ways, Apple didnt know what to build until they saw how the devices would be used. Until then, the iPhone was growing, but it was still in its early days. The App Store was still an infant as well. In 2011, Apple introduced the Volume Purchase Program (VPP) to help schools purchase and distribute apps in bulk. On paper (pun intended), it sounded like a game-changer. In practice, it was only scalable for smaller deployments. The process for installing apps was clunky, requiring IT teams to distribute codes from a spreadsheet to load them onto devices. You could technically buy one copy of an app from iTunes and load it on hundreds of devices. Yes, we we were syncing devices through iTunes in bulk. Yes, its as painful as it sounds. Upgrading iOS was an absolute nightmare and took days, if not weeks. Remember, at the time, there were no over-the-air updates.Apple took another step forward in 2012 with the release of Apple Configurator. This macOS app allowed IT administrators to configure multiple iPads simultaneously, streamlining tasks like installing apps, setting restrictions, and managing profiles. We were still buying apps in bulk from the VPP store, but then youd take the first code to redeem the app from iTunes and then load the app and the spreadsheet into Apple Configurator. Yes, its as clunky as it sounds. In fact, I had to file numerous support tickets as some of the purchases marked the first code as redeemed so that it couldnt be used. While it wasnt an ideal solution for large-scale deployments compared to what we have today, Apple Configurator was a lifeline for smaller schools or one-off configurations. It was much faster to setup devices in bulk compared to the iTunes approach. The next stepsThis time period is when Apple had a decision to make: rebuild everything for a world where everyone is using an Apple device at all times or continue on the current path. Recognizing the need for a stronger solution, Apple spent the next several years improving its approach to device management from the ground up. In 2014, they introduced the Device Enrollment Program (DEP), a major foundational step forward. DEP allowed schools and businesses to automate the setup of iPads and Macs, ensuring they were enrolled in a device management solution straight out of the box based on the serial number. Over the next few years, Apple beefed up its enterprise tools with some low-hanging fruit, such as Managed Open In, new macOS device management commands, User Enrollment, and expanded configuration profile settings.By 2018, Apple had really defined its vision for device management with the launch of Apple School Manager and Apple Business Manager. This platform unified the features of VPP and DEP, creating a single interface that made managing devices, apps, and Apple IDs much simpler. It also tackled a significant pain point for IT teams: licensing. Apple School Manager let administrators assign, revoke, and reassign app licenses over the air based on the devices, solving the headaches that came with VPPs early implementation. Early OTA app licenses were tied to Apple/iTunes IDs, which were difficult to create in bulk for students/teachers/employees. There were no Managed Apple Accounts at this time.Zero touch and beyondBy the decades end, Apple had overhauled entirely its device management tools in flight. What had once been a major frustration for IT teams became an efficient and reliable system. Apple School Managerand its counterpart, Apple Business Managergrew into absolutely critical platforms for managing devices in schools and in the enterprise. Zero-touch deployments were straightforward to configure and roll out. While there was some technical debt around the underlying code (that Apple largely addressed with Declarative Device Management), all of the known problems were solved. At this time, I told countless people that all of the hacks around managing and deploying Apple devices at scale had largely been solved. There was a known best path for everything. You have to give Apples enterprise product and engineering teams a lot of credit for every iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, and Mac sold today. Without the really tedious work they did in the 2010s, Apples enterprise revenue growth wouldnt have been possible.Apple @ Work is exclusively brought to you by Mosyle, the only Apple Unified Platform. • Microsoft CEO Admits That AI Is Generating Basically No Value
    futurism.com
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, whose company has invested billions of dollars in ChatGPT maker OpenAI, has had it with the constant hype surrounding AI.During an appearance on podcaster Dwarkesh Patel's show this week, Nadella offered a reality check."Us self-claiming some [artificial general intelligence] milestone, that's just nonsensical benchmark hacking to me," Nadella told Patel.Instead, the CEO argued that we should be looking at whether AI is generating real-world value instead of mindlessly running after fantastical ideas like AGI.To Nadella, the proof is in the pudding. If AI actually has economic potential, he argued, it'll be clear when it starts generating measurable value."So, the first thing that we all have to do is, when we say this is like the Industrial Revolution, let's have that Industrial Revolution type of growth," he said."The real benchmark is: the world growing at 10 percent," he added. "Suddenly productivity goes up and the economy is growing at a faster rate. When that happens, we'll be fine as an industry."Needless to say, we haven't seen anything like that yet. OpenAI's top AI agent the tech that people like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman say is poised to upend the economy still moves at a snail's pace and requires constant supervision. So Nadella's line of thinking is surprisingly down-to-Earth. Besides pushing back against the hype surrounding artificial general intelligence the realization of which OpenAI has made its number one priority Nadella is admitting that generative AI simply hasn't generated much value so far.As of right now, the economy isn't showing much sign of acceleration, and certainly not because of an army of AI agents. And whether it's truly a question of "when" not "if," as he claims remains a hotly debated subject. There's a lot of money on the line, with tech companies including Microsoft and OpenAI pouring hundreds of billions of dollars into AI.Chinese AI startup DeepSeek really tested the resolve of investors earlier this year by demonstrating that its cutting-edge reasoning model, dubbed R1, could keep up with the competition, but at a tiny fraction of the price. The company ended up punching a $1 trillion hole in the industry after triggering a massive selloff. Then there are nagging technical shortcomings plaguing the current crop of AI tools, from constant "hallucinations" that make it an ill fit for any critical functions to cybersecurity concerns.Nadella's podcast appearance could be seen as a way for Microsoft to temper some sky-high expectations, calling for a more rational, real-world approach to measure success. At the same time, his actions tell a strikingly different story. Microsoft has invested $12 billion in OpenAI and has signed on to president Donald Trump's $500-billion Stargate project alongside OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. After multi-hyphenate billionaire Elon Musk questioned whether Altman had secured the funds, Nadella appeared to stand entirely behind the initiative."All I know is Im good for my $80 billion," he told CNBC last month in response to Musk's accusations.Share This Article

  • Body Panels Flying Off Cybertrucks on Highway, Drivers Report
    futurism.com
Tesla's Cybertruck has quickly become an extremely politically charged target of anti-Elon Musk sentiment. The bulky steel tanks seem to court vandals and loathing almost everywhere they go.But when spray paint is the worst a Cybertruck driver has to worry about, theyve gotten off easy there are now several reports of the 6,600-pound EVs shedding metal body panels at dangerously high speeds. The Cybertruck is designed with a nine-foot piece of boomerang-shapedwindow trim on each side. In a typical car, similar bits of body panels are held in place by bolts or else welded to the frame. But the Cybertruck is not a typical car, as one Michigan driver found out the hard way. While driving at highway speeds, the glue holding that piece of frame failed, causing it to rip off."I ran a quick errand tonight," the driver complained in a post on the Cybertruck Owners Club forum, "and while merging and accelerating on the interstate in normal traffic, at about 70 mph, I heard a loud ripping sound and the metal panel liberates and flew into traffic behind me.""I was not able to stop as I was in the middle of a highway split," he continued. "I rolled the window down and felt for it, and yes, the trim was gone."The Michigan driver is far from the only one. Car enthusiast publication Road & Trackfound multiple cases where that exact panel has peeled off its adhesive, on top of other body panels and the tailgate.Since the Cybertruck launched in November 2023, at least two other boomerang-panel complaints have been filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. When one Illinois driver's piece flew off, he asked a Tesla representative to also replace the other side, only to be told they "will not do it unless [the panel] falls of," per Road & Track.Heavy steel panels aren't the only thing flying off Elon Musk's EVs. A four-year investigation by the NHTSA found that almost 75,000 Teslas were equipped with shoddy front suspension, causing the tires to fly off at speed. Nicknamed "whompy wheels," the issue haunts Teslas of all makes and models around the world, including the brand new Cybertruck.Though the EV company issued seven Cybertruck recalls in a little over a year, it has seemingly yet to address whompy wheels or the boomerang trim.Until it does, drivers might want to give these rolling doorstops a wide birth, unless they want a piece of the "toughest and most badass truck ever made" flying through their windshield.More on Cybertrucks: Cybertruck Owners Actually Love the Fact That Their Car Could Fly Apart at Any MomentShare This Article

The explosive item is once again strong and can deal significant damage to players, which is something the community has asked for.Grenades have received a much-needed buff in FortniteWhen Fortnite just came out, Grenades dealt 100 damage to players and 735 damage to structures. On top of this, it was possible to carry 10 of them in a single stack. Grenades were deadly, mostly because they were quite common, and that is why Epic Games nerfed them. • Inside a Highly Minimalist Spanish House
    www.architecturaldigest.com
In 2011, Marie Kondos The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up was publishedand the world found a new guru. Kondo recommended that we keep only items that spark joy. With this approach, she wandered through her clients homes in her Netflix series, organizing their lives by guiding them through how to choose what to keep and what to discard. On a visit to the Spanish home of architects and artists Paul Antn and Bea Aiguabella, Kondo might not find much to work withthe couple already follows her precepts. This probably comes to us from our academic training, Antn says, and then he refers back to a much older advocate of restraint. Adolf Loos already said it in his book when he equated ornament with crime, and we agree with him.Paul Antns concrete Arkitekton 8 is to the right in this view of the living area.Four years ago, the couple, who have three children, decided to leave Madrid in search of a simpler lifestyle. We wanted to get back to a way of life like we had in London where, after working, wed return to our quiet neighborhood and enjoy its calm atmosphere, they explain. They have now created their own sanctuary where they can disconnect in a smaller city outside of Madrid in a home that is typical of those in the region of Castille-La Mancha, with a tiled gable roof. The house is so discreet that you dont even notice it from the street, they say about their minimalist home. The explain that the first time they saw it, it was clearly in need of some restoration, but at the same time they wanted to maintain its humble and austere charm. In the living room, a BKF chair, sofa and rug by Kave Home, and the TMM floor lamp is by Miguel Mil for Santa & Cole. On the wall, the collage 1 TON (2024) is by Bea Aiguabella. On a shelf above the staircase, a sculpture by Faustino Aizkorbe. Plaster, pale continuous flooring, and raw steel are elements in the palette of materials and textures of this house with a monastic air.The 4,300-square-foot plot includes a swimming pool and a lush sunken courtyard, where nature appears to have been given free rein. At the back of the house, the architects created an open-air kitchen and dining area, with the house itself to one side. It runs through the garden and has several large windows overlooking the green space. The search for a house with outdoor space was motivated by our children. We learned that there are studies that conclude that the architecture of the home where you grow up shapes your character, they say. Inside, a compact living room opens onto a large kitchen with an island, a principal bedroom with an en suite bathroom, a childrens bedroom, and a toilet. The main idea of the project was for the kitchen to be the heart of the house, so we placed it in the center of the floor plan, inspired by the layout of a txoko [a large room traditionally used for dinners and celebrations], explains Antn. The homes circulation revolves around this space; in fact, to reach any room in the house you have to pass through it. Everything happens around this part of the house. In Rodrigo Muoz Avias memoir, La Casa de los Pintores, the author explains that his parents were constantly receiving guests. We wanted something similar and that our children would be involved in our social life as well.
