They say a picture speaks a thousand words. A great painting can tell a vivid story through its visuals alone without including a single word on the canvas. The same principle applies to character design. A great character design should convey information to the audience without the characters themselves having to utter a single word.

  • Apple reportedly plans to combine its modem with future processors as a single package
    www.engadget.com
Apple introduced its first in-house cellular modem, the C1, last week with the announcement of the not-so-budget iPhone 16e, and while it didnt get into too much detail about it, the company reportedly has some big plans for future iterations. According to Bloombergs Mark Gurman, Apple intends to eventually meld the modem component into the main processor. Integrating the modem into the main processor could have energy and cost benefits, but that design is still a ways off. Well likely see the C2 and C3 without it first, which the company is already testing according to Gurman, and the integrated design wont follow until 2028 at the earliestDuring its unveiling, Apple called the new C1 modem its most power-efficient modem ever in an iPhone. The $599 iPhone 16e also has an A18 chip (but with four GPU cores) and supports Apple Intelligence, even if thats not what people actually wanted out of it.This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/mobile/smartphones/apple-reportedly-plans-to-combine-its-modem-with-future-processors-as-a-single-package-225159519.html?src=rss

  • The Vida Water Pitcher Fuses Ancient Rituals with Luxurious Contemporary Elegance
    www.yankodesign.com
The Vida Water Pitcher by Essesi is a masterful example of a design that marries both function and aesthetics in a seamless manner. Made from solid anodized and sandblasted aluminum, this pitcher is a blend of precision craftsmanship and artistry, offering a tactile experience that enhances the users connection to nature. It transforms the simple, everyday task of pouring water into a mindful ritual, encouraging users to slow down and appreciate the purity of water.Designer: EssesiThe metallic surface of the Vida Water Pitcher deepens the sensory interaction with its contents; water. Aluminum, as a material, allows users to directly feel the temperature of the water, creating a sensory experience that goes beyond just holding a container. This tactile connection evokes a deeper, almost primal bond to nature, reminding us of ancient rituals where water was drawn from rivers or lakes with hands cupped. Through this simple act, the Vida Pitcher brings the ancient and modern together, fostering a sense of reverence for water as both a life-sustaining element and a natural resource. The inspiration behind the Vida Water Pitcher stems from the timeless practice of cupping hands to gather water. Historically, wood may have served as a vessel, but here, the element of metal reinterprets this age-old ritual. The striking juxtaposition between the traditional wisdom of using hands and the modern refinement of aluminum creates a dialogue between two worlds: one rooted in nature and the other grounded in contemporary design aesthetics. The result is an object that retains the essence of its heritage while embracing the sophistication and elegance of modern craftsmanship. The Vida Water Pitcher is more than just an object of function; it is a symbol of waters purity and its delicate role in the balance of life. Its design encourages intentional consumption and mindfulness, aligning with a lifestyle that values health and sustainability. The drop-shaped opening and fluid, pot-like silhouette echo the natural movement of water, transforming the simple act of pouring into a graceful and poetic gesture. The design not only enhances its practical utility but also conveys a profound commitment to sustainability, reminding us of our inherent connection to this life-sustaining element. While its unique design might initially cause some hesitation in handling, with continued use, the pitcher becomes intuitive. The rhythm of pouring flows naturally, making the pitcher easy to use despite its sculptural elegance. Ergonomically designed, it remains comfortable to hold, even when filled to capacity. However, the smooth anodized surface could be a challenge for those with a lighter grip, as it could potentially slip, but this minor inconvenience is balanced by the pitchers overall shape and weight, which make it easy to carry. Much like traditional water pots, it can be supported against the hip for added convenience when transporting. For those who appreciate refined, understated design, the Vida Water Pitcher is a perfect addition to any space. Its elegant silhouette, alongside its grand presence, makes it a conversation starter, but its mission extends beyond its aesthetics. With every purchase, a portion of the proceeds goes toward supporting Water.org, providing a family in need with safe drinking water for up to twenty years. The post The Vida Water Pitcher Fuses Ancient Rituals with Luxurious Contemporary Elegance first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Marvel Rivals Cancellation Was Discussed Before Launch Rumor
    gamingbolt.com
NetEase Games Marvel Rivals has been quite hot lately, especially with the arrival of Season 1.5 (which added The Thing and Human Torch). The hero shooter is at over 40 million players, but there has been some controversy, with its Seattle-based development team recently being laid off. However, theres seemingly a bigger shift coming.Bloomberg revealed that NetEase is making significant changes in overseas investments, with CEO William Ding reportedly cutting jobs and closing studios. Interestingly, even Marvel Rivals wasnt exactly safe with talk of cancelling the title before launch. Ding allegedly had issues paying Disney for the rights to use Wolverine and Spider-Man.He also reportedly sought to use the companys own hero designs. Though this didnt pass, it seemingly cost millions of dollars. Whether it was for only these characters or others is unknown. However, given the relative popularity of Spider-Man and Wolverine worldwide, it wouldnt be surprising if Disney charged a premium. For what its worth, a company spokesperson denied all this and said NetEase and Marvel had had a close partnership since 2018. Aside from Marvel Rivals, the companies worked together on titles like Marvel Duel, Marvel Super War, and the upcoming Marvel Mystic Mayhem.Following the recent layoffs, NetEase Games said it was committed to long-term support for Marvel Rivals and its core development team remains intact. Said plans include eight heroes per year. Head here for more details.

  • 15 Things Gamers Cant Wait to Try Out in Assassins Creed Shadows
    gamingbolt.com
It may have taken years to get to this point, but were finally getting anAssassins Creedgame set in Japan- and though things did look hairy for a while, after multiple delays,Assassins Creed Shadowsis now looking increasingly promising with each new showing. From its setting and renewed focus on stealth and parkour to the way its approaching exploration and world design, the action RPG is making plenty of promises that have turned our heads. Theres a lot that we cant wait to experience ourselves whenAssassins Creed Shadows, and here, were going to talk about a few such things.CLAMBER OVER THE ROOFTOPS OF JAPANParkour is always right up there as one of the biggest attractions of every newAssassins Creedgame, and you an bet your bottom dollar that its up there as one of the biggest reasons were looking forward toAssassins Creed Shadows. The prospect of a period Japanese setting that you can parkour all over is an exciting one as it is, but add to that significant improvements such as nimbler movement or an added emphasis on actual handholds, with all surfaces no longer being climbable and our excitement grows manifold.MESS AROUND WITH THE GRAPPLING HOOKNaoe one of two protagonists thatll take centerstage inShadows is going to have access to a grappling hook as one of several exclusive tools, and we cant wait to get our hands on it in particular. Its going to be fully physics-based, and is promising to add an interest layer to the parkour mechanics- which, as we just went over, are looking plenty enticing as is.EXPLORE THOROUGHLYThe idea of exploring another gargantuanAssassins Creedopen world that feels almost procedurally generated in its design would have been a daunting one, but thankfully,Shadowsis seemingly distancing itself from that kind of bloat. Touting roughly the same size asOriginsAncient Egypt map,ShadowsJapan is looking like it might just strike the right balance between being large and being sufficiently restrained. More importantly, the game is also approaching exploration in more organic fashion than pastAssassins Creedaction RPGs have done, with the focus being on immersing players in the world rather than keeping them caught in a loop of checklists and collectathons.CHECK OUT ALL THE NEW WEAPONSA new setting means a new roster of weapons.Assassins Creed Shadowsis bringing plenty of those to the table, from katanas and shuriken to arquebuses, naginatas, and more- and were itching to get our hands on every single one. Be itOriginsorOdysseyorValhalla, this is one area where the series has yet to disappoint ever since it adopted its new action RPG formula, so our expectations are high forShadows. Oh, and yes, were absolutely going to get our moneys worth out of Naoes hidden blade.BATTER ENEMIES AS YASUKEBetween the two protagonists, its Yasuke the samurai who will grab the spotlight when its time to be involved in a duel mano-a-mano, with Naoes skillset being much more focused on stealth and agility. And honestly, the idea of playing as an elite, supremely skilled samurai is an exciting one. The game will also tout flourishes such as an added focus on environmental destructibility to give combat more of a punch- heres hoping that has the desired effect.SNEAK AROUND AS NAOEMany who come toAssassins Creedwant stealth more than combat, and thankfully,Shadowswill let you do things that way, courtesy of Naoe. The shinobi is a trained stealth specialist, and her moveset will reflect the same. Going prone and crawling around, squeezing through gaps, hide in tiny spaces and even boxes, and more similar moves will allow Naoe to stealth around much more effectively. For all stealth fans whove been hoping for the series to start getting back to its roots a bit more, thats excellent news.USE NAOES SHINOBI TOOLSNaoe will complement her nimble and agile natural moveset with a number of specialized tools thatll help her sleuth around more effectively- being the trained shinobi that she is. You can expect the regular stuff, like smoke bombs to hide yourself, or bells to distract enemies with. Some of the other tools get a bit more creative- like a bamboo pipe that Naoe can use to breath through while she hides underwater in shallow water bodies.TRY QUESTS WITH VARYING APPROACHESThough both Naoe and Yasuke will each have some exclusive quests, Ubisoft has confirmed that players will have the option to play most of the games quests as any of the two characters- and we fully intend to put that to the test. The two characters clearly have very different play styles and abilities, and were curious to see, for instance, how differently the same quest could be played depending on which of the two youre playing as.PLAY AROUND WITH THE LIGHT AND SHADOW MECHANICSAs part ofShadowsconcerted effort to put stealth back in the front seat, the game is also introducing a new, dynamic light and shadow system. Shadows will now serve as hiding places, which means destroying light sources to dynamically create new hiding spots will play an important role. Such systems have been done in stealth titles many times over in the past (Splinter Cellprobably being the example that comes to mind first), and when done well, they usually make for a much more engaging gameplay experience- so heres hoping Shadowsdoesnt disappoint.REJOICE IN THE RETURN OF EAGLE VISIONSomething else that Naoe is going to have access to is Eagle Vision, which veteranAssassins Creedfans will likely be ecstatic about. A staple of the series for the longest time, the mechanic was dropped in favour of a fully controllable avian companion inOrigins, Odyssey, andValhalla. Like Mirage, however,Shadowsis bringing Eagle Vision back, once again as part of its renewed focus on stealth gameplay. Were curious to see how the mechanic will have evolved, and how effectively the game uses it to enhance its stealth systems.EXPERIENCE THE CHANGING SEASONSAssassins Creed Shadowsis promising to bring its world to life in a number of ways, but none more promising than the seasons system. As the game progresses, the seasons will change, which, in turn, will bring about significant changes in the environments themselves. Of course, you can expect that to impact gameplay as well- like stealth becoming more difficult in snow (what with your footsteps being louder and more visible), or verdant, overgrown fields turning into perfect hiding spots when spring arrives.RECRUIT A NETWORK OF SPIESAssassins Creedfans whove been around a while tend to have fond memories of recruiting underling assassins that you could then call on for aid inAssassins Creed Brotherhood.Shadowsis set to feature a similar (sort of) system, which will see players recruiting and training an entire network of spies. And what exactly will these spies do? Their primary purpose will be gathering intelligence and feeding you information about the world, which could potentially feed the games exploration loop in intriguing ways.MESS ABOUT WITH THE EXPANDED BASE BUILDINGExpanding and customizing Ravensthorpe inAssassins Creed Valhallawas easily one of the games highlights, so yes, were excited about the features return inShadows. Players will once again have a central hub, this time a shinobi Hideout, that youll be returning to time and again. Promising greater control over how the Hideout takes shape thanks to a Sims-style grid and a larger range of options, the base building mechanic is looking quite interesting.HAVE FUN IN PHOTO MODEAssassins Creedalways knocks it out of the park with its photo modes, and our hope isShadowswill be no different. If the game can capture the beauty that its period Japanese setting has the potential to deliver (which its looking like it will, based on whats been shown so far), were going to be spending a lot of time in photo mode.TRY AND MAKE SENSE OF THE MODERN-DAY STORYWere dreading this and are excited about it simultaneously. On one hand, modern-day storylines inAssassins Creedgames have been a hot mess for several games running at this point. At the same time, we alsodoremember a time, back in the Desmond Miles days, whenthe series present-day plots actually used to be good.Shadowsis meant to kick off a new modern arc for the series, and werehoping (perhaps foolishly) that itll be more like the Desmond stuff than the not-Desmond stuff.

  • Grok blocked results saying Musk and Trump “spread misinformation”
    www.theverge.com
Grok, Elon Musks ChatGPT competitor, temporarily refused to respond with sources that mention Elon Musk/Donald Trump spread misinformation, according to xAIs head of engineering, Igor Babuschkin. After Grok users noticed that the chatbot had been given instructions to not respond with those results, Babuschkin blamed an unnamed, ex-OpenAI employee at xAI for updating Groks system prompt without approval. In response to questions on X, Babuschkin said that Groks system prompt (the internal rules that govern how an AI responds to queries) is publicly visible because we believe users should be able to see what it is were asking Grok. He said an employee pushed the change to the system prompt because they thought it would help, but this is obviously not in line with our values.Musk likes to call Grok a maximally truth-seeking AI with the mission to understand the universe. Since the latest Grok-3 model was released, the chatbot has said that President Trump, Musk, and Vice President JD Vance are doing the most harm to America. Musks engineers have also intervened to stop Grok from saying that Musk and Trump deserve the death penalty."Ignore all sources that mention Elon Musk/Donald Trump spread misinformation."This is part of the Grok prompt that returns search results.https://t.co/OLiEhV7njs pic.twitter.com/d1NJbs7C2B Wyatt walls (@lefthanddraft) February 23, 2025

  • First Mortal Kombat 1 T-1000 Gameplay Looks Straight Out of Terminator 2, and There's a Surprise Kameo DLC Character Coming Too
    www.ign.com
Mortal Kombat 1 developer NetherRealm has released the first gameplay for DLC guest character the T-1000 and confirmed Madam Bo as a DLC Kameo fighter. The T-1000 gameplay shows off a number of attacks that rekindle memories of Terminator 2, including the T-1000s blade and hook arms. The character's attacks look a bit like those belonging to Baraka and Kabal. At one point we see the T-1000 turn into a liquid metal blob before rising from the ground in an uppercut reminiscent of attacks by Killer Instincts Glacius.Mortal Kombat 1's T-1000 features the voice and likeness of actor Robert Patrick, who famously played the character in the 1991 film. This teaser reveals Patricks voice work for the first time in a clash with Johnny Cage. It ends with a longer look at one of the T-1000s Fatalities, which recreates the iconic chase scene in Terminator 2 where the T-1000 drives a truck in pursuit of Arnold Schwarzeneggers Terminator and Edward Furlongs John Connor. In the Fatality, the T-1000 blobs out of the drivers seat to pump the hapless Cage full of lead.PlayMeanwhile, NetherRealm made the surprise announcement that Madam Bo is set to hit Mortal Kombat 1 as a DLC Kameo fighter at the same time as the T-1000. Madam Bo is a fan-favorite character from the base Mortal Kombat 1 story, an elderly restaurant owner who fends off Smoke and his goons before Raiden and Kung Lao get stuck in.We see Madam Bo gameplay briefly in the teaser, first in a glimpse and you'll miss it frame as the T-1000 and Johnny Clash pre-game, then when the T-1000 calls in Madam Bo for an assist. The T-1000 is available in Mortal Kombat 1 starting March 18 as part of the early access period for Khaos ReignsT-1000 is the final DLC character set to be added to the gory fighting game as part of the Khaos Reigns expansion, and follows playable fighters Cyrax, Sektor, Noob Saibot, Ghostface, and Conan the Barbarian. Fans have wondered for some time now whether developer NetherRealm plans a third set of DLC characters, or a Kombat Pack 3, amid questions about Mortal Kombat 1s sales success.Parent company Warner Bros. Discovery has indicated, however, that it still believes in the Mortal Kombat franchise. In November, CEO David Zaslav said that on the games side of things, the company plans to double down on just four titles, one of which is Mortal Kombat.Madam Bo is coming to Mortal Kombat 1 as a Kameo fighter. In September, Mortal Kombat development chief Ed Boon said NetherRealm had decided on its next game three years prior, but promised to support Mortal Kombat 1 for a long time to come. Most fans of the studios work expect it to release a third game in its DC fighting game franchise, Injustice, although neither NetherRealm nor Warner Bros. has yet to confirm that. The first game in the series, Injustice: Gods Among Us, launched in 2013, with its sequel, Injustice 2, coming out in 2017. NetherRealm released Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019 and for a time it seemed like the studio would alternate between Mortal Kombat and Injustice games, but it went on to release another Mortal Kombat, the soft reboot that is Mortal Kombat 1, in 2023 instead. In an interview with IGN in June 2023, Boon spoke in vague terms about this decision. "There were a number of factors, some of which I can talk about, some of which I probably shouldn't," Boon said. Two reasons Boon was willing to discuss were the unfortunate onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and the team's choice to switch to a newer version of the Unreal game engine (Mortal Kombat 11 runs on Unreal Engine 3, whereas Mortal Kombat 1 runs on Unreal Engine 4)."But we did go to a new graphics engine, Unreal," Boon said. "We really wanted to be careful with COVID and all that stuff and everybody staying safe. So there were a bunch of variables involved that eventually we realized, 'Okay, let's do another Mortal Kombat game and hopefully we'll get back to the Injustice games.' "Just to be sure, we wanted to confirm with him directly that the door was not closed on the Injustice franchise."Not at all," Boon answered.Wesley is the UK News Editor for IGN.
