This member-only story is on us. Upgrade to access all of Medium.Ive worked on anomaly detection problems for a while now, and one obstacle I consistently face is extreme imbalance in the data. When only a fraction of a percent of your records are anomalies, most standard methods like oversampling or undersampling just dont cut it. In my experience, these approaches either lead to overfitting (repeating the same rare examples too often) or throw away valuable data. Thats where a newer technique Ive been exploring comes in: using Large Language Model (LLM) embeddings to spot subtle irregularities.Even though embeddings are typically associated with text (thanks to tools like BERT, GPT, or other transformer models), Ive found that the same idea representing data in a dense, meaningful vector space works wonders for detecting outliers across various data types. Let me walk you through the thinking and process behind this method.Source: Mario DudjakThose experienced in anomaly or rare event detection are keenly aware of the datas extreme imbalance. In many scenarios:Less than 1% of the dataset represents rare or critical events, forming the minority class.99% or more of the dataset falls under the normal or unknown category Read the full blog for free on Medium.Join thousands of data leaders on the AI newsletter. Daredevil: Born Agains Charlie Cox Promises Every Brutal, Violent Moment Made It Into the Show
With Daredevil: Born Again debuting this week, stars Charlie Cox and Vincent DOnofrio have been making the press rounds talking about the process of taking the very R-rated, violent Netflix series and extending that story for what DOnofrio says is essentially a fourth season on Disney+. The thing is, the Disney Marvel shows tend to be much more family-friendly affairs. Bone-crunching isnt really a thing over there. Or at least it didnt used to be.There were practical effects in [Born Again], behind the monitor we're just like We didn't know you could do that, laughs Justin Benson, who directed the season premiere with his filmmaking partner Aaron Moorhead. That it just happened in-camera. And it should be said that Vincent should get a lot of credit for one of the biggest gags in the show. [He was] a team leader on that and it benefited.PlayD'Onofrio, who of course plays the Kingpin of Crime in the show, Wilson Fisk, agrees that much of the credit for such moments goes to the special effects team. And while theyre not giving away the specifics of that particular scene, the team all agree that they cant believe it made to the final cut of the episode. It was all practical, the actor tells IGN, which is to say not a computer-generated effect. After we accomplished it, I went home that night [and] because it went so well I thought, It's never going to be in the show, no matter what. But the moment did make it, and not in an altered state to downplay how violent it is either. No softening it up, says Moorhead. Cox recalls doing scenes as Matt Murdock/Daredevil where they had to shoot alternative versions because the likelihood is that leg break or that whatever wouldn't [make it] in. And without exception, every one of the more brutal, more violent breaks or moments or pieces of action is in our show. After we accomplished it, I went home that night and thought, It's never going to be in the show, no matter what. -Vincent DOnofrioThe action behind the Netflix Daredevil series was always street level and gritty, as the parlance goes, and the mission statement behind the new version once it was settled upon after some behind-the-scenes pivots was to maintain that approach, MCU or no MCU. Even little touches like Matt breathing so heavily after an intense fight scene are meant to drive home not just how human Daredevil is, but also that theres an emotional drive behind the scene beyond just punch guys. We've always tried to do that on the show, says Cox. To make sure that every punch or kick is almost like a line of dialogue, that there's a reason for it to be there. And where possible I'm not trying to excuse the violence of our show we always make sure that it's not just grotesque for the sake of it.Charlie Cox on Shooting a Stunt SequenceWhat people don't necessarily realize with the stunt sequence is if you're shooting a scene of dialogue and two people are talking, those words will work from anywhere. You can put the camera anywhere. And that's up to the discretion of the director. When you're doing an action sequence, [stunt coordinator and second unit director] Phil [Silvera] is doing a previz, he's writing this, he's choreographing this scene over the weeks leading up to the scene. But if one of the lines of dialogue is a punch, that might work from the camera angle that he's using in the previz. But we get there on the day and the directors want the camera to be over here, that can't work as a punch anymore. That now has to be an elbow or a kick because the angle of the camera might suggest that we can't sell it that way.So you really have to be adaptable. And as do the directors, there has to be a conversation and a collaboration in order to make those sequences work. Because also, fight sequences take a lot of time. You can do 14 pages of dialogue in a day. You can do maybe one, one-and-a-half pages of action in a day. So time is really valuable and you've got to be able to work and adapt quickly.PlayD'Onofrio points out that the action only works if real people emotion is at the core of it all, and he promises terribly emotional stuff from Daredevil: Born Again: You have some funny stuff, you have a lot of action, and you have real relationships that are failing, and succeeding, and failing, and succeeding through the whole story. Its important to the actors and the directors to not romanticize the violence, and perhaps that is part of why it can work whether its in the Netflix show or now in the MCU because its always being used in the service of continuing Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisks stories and evolution. It gives it scope, explains Benson. The only reason it works is because we're showing a consequence of the actions of people who are doing things that are grotesque. And it's a manifestation of their pain. It's showing how grotesque that pain can be and making it feel even more human. Often it's not for fun. It's something you kind of want to look away from.Part of the inspiration for the team in how to depict such scenes came from the movies and shows theyve loved over the years. D'Onofrio points to Harrison Fords everyman performances over the years hes waiting for somebody around the corner and he's got a gun, and his hand is shaking, he's shaking and even Gary Cooper. For the actor, theres a humility in both Daredevil and Kingpin that reminds him of the Harrison Fords and the Gary Coopers.Daredevil: Born AgainAnytime they were in a fight, or they were holding a gun, they looked nervous, he says. They carried their own humility into the action scenes with them. And I always thought that that was the way to go. That made it look real to me. Gary Cooper in Sergeant York, when he takes aim, when he becomes the sniper, it's the humility in his eyes that you see. It's amazing. I think that helps action stuff a lot. We're all very conscious of that.Daredevil: Born Agains first two episodes debut on Disney+ on March 4.

MagSafe Monday: LISENs new 10,000mAh battery includes Qi2 and a built-in kickstand
The introduction of Qi2 has made MagSafe charging more on par with wired USB-C charging, and LISENs latest MagSafe power bank takes full advantage of it. It includes a 10,000mAh battery, 15W wireless charging (Qi2), and a built-in kickstand; this MagSafe charger from LISEN is a great option for your go-to battery.MagSafe Monday:Every Monday, Bradley Chambers looks at the latest and greatest in the MagSafe and wireless charging industry to help you get the most out of your Apple devices that support wireless charging.Qi2 over and over againIn the industry, we can throw around buzzwords without realizing not everyone knows what they mean. So what is Qi2? Qi2 is the new wireless charging standard, designed to improve efficiency, speed, and compatibility across devices from all manufacturers. Unlike the original Qi standard, Qi2 adds a Magnetic Power Profile (MPP), which means better alignment for more efficient power transfer. For iPhone owners, this battery brings a 15W wireless charging, not the 7.5W limit that you saw on older Qi chargers. It also makes third-party accessories more reliable, as Qi2-certified chargers must meet strict performance standards. In short, if you want wired speeds with wireless charging, Qi2 is the future. So whats in LISENs new charger?LISENs new MagSafe charger adds a built-in kickstand, making it useful beyond just charging. Whether youre using FaceTime, watching Silo on a plane, or reading emails, the kickstand makes it easy to keep your iPhone propped up to a nice angle. In fact, one place Ive started using a MagSafe battery with a kickstand while traveling is charging my iPhone at night and using Standby mode.It obviously includes MagSafe charging, but it can also output via USB-C, so you can top off your Kindle Paperwhite. As I move toward a 100% USB-C lifestyle, I really appreciate the option to use both. The 10,000mAh capacity is enough to fully charge an iPhone 16 around 1.7 times wirelessly or 2.1 times via USB-C, meaning you stay powered throughout a very long day or few days. You wont have to hunt for an outlet mid-meeting or during a long commute. I spent a week in Nashville a few weeks ago, and this was my primary charger almost all day. I was in and out of meetings and using my iPhone to take notes. Id charge this battery while I was out to dinner, and then I would get my iPhone to 100% overnight, and then as I go low throughout the day, Id get back to 100% with this battery. Its a nice nice for its powerWrap upOverall, LISENs Qi2 power bank brings MagSafe convenience with true fast charging speeds, all in a pocketable design with a great kickstand. If youve been looking for a travel-friendly, 15-watt MagSafe charger, this one checks all the right boxes. USB-C output is the cherry on the sundae. You can buy it on Amazon.Add 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links. This Jacket Charges Your Phone With Solar Energy and Makes You Look Like a Jedi
Imagine your jacket could do more than just protect you from brisk wind -- imagine it could also help power your electronics. And make you look like a Jedi. That's what this poncho-like jacket from Anker Solix, the solar and energy storage tech branch of Anker, aims to do. I saw a prototype of it at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona -- and tried it on for size. I've never felt simultaneously cooler and weirder. The jacket, which Anker Solix calls a cloak, is covered in about two dozen sewn-on solar cells made from perovskite, a mineral that helps the cells feel more fabric-like and somewhat flexible. An attached cable with a 30-watt USB-C output connects to a power bank or directly into your device, so you can charge your electronics as you walk around or relax outdoors.Read more: MWC 2025: All the Phones, Wearables, Robots and AI Live From Barcelona A stripe of blue LEDs gives the jacket a cyber-Jedi look. Andrew Lanxon/CNETBlue light lines the hood to give a cooler, more futuristic feel. I imagine it's also helpful if you're out at night and want to make yourself clearly visible for safety. The cloak resembles a rain jacket, with a slick surface, a lightweight feel and a zipper. Wearing it, the solar cells feel like large iron-on patches, which are thankfully smaller and triangle-shaped on the right arm and shoulder to make it easier to bend your elbow and otherwise move around. Panels on the front left and back are rectangular. The solar jacket is still just a concept, so it's not clear if or when it'll see the light of day. Anker Solix has been seeking other unique ways to charge devices and gadgets. During CES, it unveiled theEverFrost 2 electric cooler, which is slated tocome out this month, as well as asolar umbrellathat it said would be available this summer. MWC 2025: Honor Teases Agentic AI Phone That Will 'Revolutionize' Our Devices
Honor used to be best known as the younger sibling to its former parent brand Huawei, but since parting ways with the Chinese tech giant, the phone-maker has gone from strength to strength in forging its own identity. AtMWC 2025, the company made its boldest move yet to plant a stake in the ground -- not just as a rival to thetop Android phone makersbut to all companies making AI devices.Honor didn't unveil a new phone at the Barcelona mobile show -- it debuted its new flagship, the Honor Magic 7 Pro, in January. Instead, it announced a $10 billion investment in a range of AI products and devices. That doesn't mean it's abandoning phones, though. Its first project will be developing an intelligent phone that will "revolutionize human-to-device interaction" in collaboration with Google and chipmaker Qualcomm."We are working closely to deeply integrate Google's Gemini AI models into Honor solutions and create new possibilities for users around the world that were never before possible while protecting their data security and user privacy," said Matt Waldbusser, managing director of consumer AI at Google Cloud.Read more: MWC 2025: All the Phones, Wearables, Robots and AI Live From BarcelonaWhat Honor is hinting at is a shift to agentic AI, where we rely less on an app-based interface. Instead, once given a task or command, our mobile AI agent will reach into the apps on our phone to coordinate on our behalf. It's a vision I first saw last year at Mobile World Congress, and has since gained traction, promising to radically reshape how we interact with our devices. During the company's Barcelona keynote, it demoed the latest version of its AI agent and said it would be bringing it to devices in the near future.Honor Alpha PlanFor Honor, this is all part of its "Alpha Plan," a fresh strategy from newly appointed CEO James Li that will see the company attempt to create AI devices and services to operate across different operating systems. The first step in this is a universal file-sharing system that Honor says will introduce ultrafast transfers between iOS and Android. Existing Honor phones will also benefit, with the company upgrading from five to seven years of Android OS and security updates, plus AI image upscaling to restore old pictures and AI deepfake detection rolling out to the Magic 7 Pro.Read more:There's AI, and Then There's AGI: How To Tell the DifferenceAmong its MWC announcements, Honor also had new devices to unveil. The include the Honor Earbuds Open for 149 euros (roughly converts to $155, 125 or AU$255), the Honor Watch 5 Ultra for 279 euros and the Honor Pad V9 for 250 euros. A laptop, the Honor MagicBook Pro14 is also coming soon, the company said. MWC 2025: I Took Hundreds of Photos With the Xiaomi 15 Ultra. These Are My Faves See all photos

Flights to Reagan National Airport in D.C. receive false collision alerts while landing
TransportationFlights to Reagan National Airport in D.C. receive false collision alerts while landingThe Federal Aviation Administration is investigating after several airliners on approach to land at Washington Reagan National Airport Saturday morning received what appear to be false alarms from their onboard Traffic Collision Avoidance System."It's been happening all morning. Let me know if you see anything. No one else has seen anything except for on the TCAS," one air traffic controller can be heard telling an inbound flight, according to ATC audio reviewed by CBS News. At least five flight crews reported receiving apparent false TCAS alerts. The pilots of American Eagle flight 4469, operated by Republic Airways, were coming into land from Pittsburgh when they received an alert. The flight was descending between 1200 and 1000 feet when TCAS instructed the pilots to take evasive maneuvers to avoid another object."We had to dive a little bit," one of the pilots told air traffic controllers.Controllers asked the pilots after safely landing, "did you actually visibly see anything other than what the TCAS was showing?""Negative, it would just say an unknown target descending rapidly," the pilots responded."Alright, that's the same sort of reports we've been getting. It seemed like it had stopped but it sounds like it's starting again," a controller replied.Former chair of the National Transportation Safety Board and CBS News transportation safety analyst Robert Sumwalt said that the situation is unusual."I've never heard of something like this," the retired 737 captain said. "Nuisance alerts, yes, they happen. But not like this where several planes have it at the same location."The FAA said in a statement to CBS News that several flight crews inbound to Reagan National Airport reported the onboard alerts when no other aircraft were nearby, but the total number of aircraft impacted is unclear. The TCAS is a piece of technology installed on individual planes, not a ground-based or centrally located system. It works by using an aircraft's transponder to detect and communicate with nearby aircraft. After receiving the position and altitude of the nearby aircraft, the system calculates if there's a potential for collision. If it finds there's a potential, it will instruct the pilots via audible alerts and displayed instructions to watch for traffic, climb or descend to avoid a mid-air collision."Some of the crews executed go-arounds as a result of the alerts. The FAA is investigating why the alerts occurred," the FAA's statement said.Federal investigators on Monday added that the issue has not been reported again since Saturday morning, with last reports coming in around 9 a.m. EST."Yeah, we got a little something there," the pilots of American Eagle flight 4538, also operated by Republic, from New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport said after they received a similar alarm on Saturday morning. "It said on the TCAS, it was 600 feet above us and we didn't see anything."American Eagle flight 5197 arriving from Minneapolis reported the same thing occurring on their approach: "We got a TCAS but we didn't see anything either."Arriving from Des Moines, American Eagle 5098 reported receiving two warnings.Flight 5802 from Nashville told controllers after an alert, "we saw nothing out there though."The crew of Flight 4469 appeared to joke about a possible explanation, saying it was "aliens." Another voice said "Russia."The incidents unfolded amid heightened scrutiny at Reagan National Airport after January's deadly crash between a Black Hawk and a regional aircraft. Last month, the NTSB recovered the plane's TCAS and investigators are working to examine the system and related components.More from CBS NewsKris Van CleaveEmmy Award-winning journalist Kris Van Cleave is the senior transportation correspondent for CBS News based in Phoenix, Arizona, where he also serves as a national correspondent reporting for all CBS News broadcasts and platforms.

Auto industry braces for a blow from 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico
BusinessAuto industry braces for a blow from 25% tariffs on Canada and MexicoTariffs and autos3:43 A car carrier trailer drive to cross to the U.S. at Otay Commercial port in Tijuana, Mexico on January 31. President Donald Trump's threatened tariffs on Mexico and Canada, set to go into effect on Tuesday, would hurt the Mexican economy but also hurt auto plants in the U.S. Guillermo Arias/AFP via Getty Images hide captiontoggle caption Guillermo Arias/AFP via Getty Images As President Trump's once-postponed 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico are poised to transition from a threat to a reality, the auto industry is preparing for higher costs and an extraordinary disruption to their North American supply chains. "The tariffs are all set," Trump told reporters on Monday afternoon, saying that there was no room for Canada or Mexico to negotiate another reprieve. "They go into effect tomorrow." Trump also says he will double the tariffs he imposed on China last month, from 10% to 20%. Speaking on Monday, Trump called his announcement "very exciting" for the auto industry and said it would benefit from his tariff plan. "So what they have to do is build their car plants, frankly, and other things in the United States, in which case they have no tariffs," Trump said. But the auto industry itself has been vocally opposed to these tariffs. And that's in large part because car plants in the U.S. rely on parts from Canada and Mexico. "Let's be real honest," Ford CEO Jim Farley told an investor conference in February. "Long term, a 25% tariff across the Mexico and Canadian border will blow a hole in the U.S. industry that we have never seen." In fact, Farley noted, because U.S. plants have built supply chains that span North America, U.S.-based manufacturing will be hit especially hard. Analysts at Bernstein Research have similarly found that the Detroit automakers will be particularly vulnerable, compared to their international competitors. As parts criss-cross borders, tariffs will hike prices The North American auto supply chain is, to use the industry parlance, "highly integrated." That means factories in the U.S., Canada and Mexico ship components back and forth. For decades, trade agreements first NAFTA and then the Trump-negotiated replacement, USMCA supported this arrangement. In fact, the same car part can cross a U.S. border multiple times as it travels through the manufacturing process. NPR has previously shown how this happens with bundles of wires, and The Wall Street Journal recently visualized that journey for transmission modules. A worker assembles electronic car keys at a manufacturing plant in Tlajomulco de Zuniga, Jalisco State, Mexico, on February 20. The small, handheld remote controls are assembled in Mexico, but they cross borders in North America several times before being finished, like countless other auto parts. Ulises Ruiz/AFP via Getty Images hide captiontoggle caption Ulises Ruiz/AFP via Getty Images So while cars made in the U.S. are not subject to these tariffs, the parts that go into them often are. In February, Patrick Anderson of Anderson Economic Group presented research to the Automotive Press Association breaking down the increase in component costs for specific U.S.-made vehicle models, assuming that companies do their best to manage the costs. He said that the tariffs could boost manufacturing costs by $4,000 to more than $10,000 per car, depending on vehicle model. Now, companies could try to mitigate these costs by stockpiling parts or relocating some production; carmakers have been assuring their investors for months now that they have contingency plans in place. And to protect sales, they also might absorb some costs, rather than passing them all along to car buyers. But multiple analysts still anticipate that consumers will see car prices rise; thousands of dollars in additional production costs overnight are just too hard to avoid, even with savvy management. The investment bank Jefferies has predicted prices would go up by about 6% on average, or $2,700, while two analyses cited by Kelley Blue Book agreed on a $3,000 average price bump. Vehicle prices, of course, are already quite high, averaging about $48,000, which is out of reach for many car shoppers. Although they have recently leveled off, prices remain up significantly from pre-pandemic levels which, in turn, has put pressure on used car prices. Other tariffs, and uncertain timelines, complicate planning Meanwhile, other tariffs some already scheduled, and some merely proposed would also upend automaker supply chains. Higher tariffs on steel and aluminum, two key raw materials, kick in this month. Trump has proposed a 25% tariff on imported vehicles from Europe, as well as other country-specific tariffs. For weeks, automakers had hoped the tariffs on Mexico and Canada would remain threats, not actual policy. Now they're hoping that the tariffs are short-lived. And as companies try to navigate these shifting trade policies, one challenge is that the Trump administration's stated goals for tariffs are often contradictory. A tariff designed as a diplomatic lever might be lifted as soon as a goal is achieved and the Trump administration has said that tariffs on Canada and Mexico are a response to inadequate border and drug enforcement. But a tariff meant to promote U.S. jobs or raise revenue might be made permanent. Companies are reluctant to make long-term plans, like building new factories, with so much uncertainty. Analysts at Jefferies wrote in a note to clients on Monday that "the only thing we know for sure is that we don't know what Trump will do." And that's before factoring in the specter of retaliatory tariffs hikes imposed by other countries in response to U.S. actions. Gustavo Flores-Macias, a professor of government and public policy at Cornell University who focuses on economic reforms, thinks that's likely to come next. "While Canada and Mexico have sought to find a diplomatic solution to the White House's demands regarding undocumented migration and fentanyl trafficking, both countries are likely to retaliate in kind even if they stand more to lose economically," he said in an emailed statement.
