Nvidia said it has identified a rare issue with a small number of RTX 5090 and RTX 5070 Ti graphics cards that makes them run at a lower performance than they should. The good news is that Nvidia promises manufacturers that it will replace the impacted cards. The bad news is youll still struggle to buy one, even while some users complained their cards failed to work on startup orin one caseliterally caught on fire. RTX 5090 owners have been complaining online for over a week that some cards shipped with fewer ROPs, AKA render/raster output units than they should have. The RTX 5090 review units supposedly have 176 ROPs enabled, according to Nvidias white paper on the RTX 50-series, but some AIB variants may be carrying Blackwell architecture with fewer functioning ROPs.On Saturday, Nvidia confirmed board owners worst fears withThe Verge, saying the issue impacted .5% of the RTX 5090 and RTX 5070 Ti cards sold so far. The company said this led to around 4% worse graphics performance. The issue with the Blackwell infrastructure also impacted the China-centric RTX 5090D. Nvidia said it has fixed the manufacturing issue. Owners need to figure out for themselves whether their ultra-expensive graphics card is underperforming. TechPowerUp, which helped identify the issue, cited the Zotac RTX 5090 Solid cards were underperforming using the sites GPU-Z tool, which can spell out the number of ROPs in your card. TechPowerUp identified eight ROP units missing on the 5090, resulting in 4.5% raster capabilities with the Zotac card. The raster output units, which assist in the final pieces of the RTX rendering pipeline, were either missing or defective. ROPs are more important for tasks like anti-aliasing and texture rendering, so users may not experience as big a drop in some games as others. The RTX 5070 Ti is supposed to have 96 ROPs, as our review unit supports. Some forum users (via TomsHardware) claim some cards have shipped with 88 ROPs, leading to a supposed 10% drop in performance in some games. To remedy the situation, users will need to contact these separate companies and work with them on replacements. Gizmodo reached out to Zotac to identify how users can seek GPU replacements, and well update this story when we hear back. The issue may be present on Founder Edition cards and the full range of AIBs from Asus, MSI, and Gigabyte, to name a few. If Nvidia could correct the issue with software updates, it would. This indicates the issue is a flaw with at least a few of the Blackwell GB202 chips themselves, which indicates the problem stemmed from Nvidia as the original manufacturer.The RTX 50-series launch has been met with more than the usual number of hangups. The so-called Cablegate 12VHPWR cable melting SNAFU of the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 launch seems blas compared to this wild west of GPU controversies. Still, there is a growing sense among the Nvidia user community that the latest cards are stretching what a regular consumer-end PC can handle, even without the 12VHPWR connector. On Reddit (via VideoCardz), one user claimed that they were using an Asus ROG Astral RTX 5090 and experienced a catastrophic failure where his board caught on fire. The Astral is a massive four-slot, four-fan variant of the top-end GPU that costs more than $3,000. The user inquisition claims they had played some games on their PC and were browsing the web when the PC shut down. On a restart, smoke started coming out of the case, and they discovered burn marks on the GPU and motherboard.Without jumping to conclusions, theres not much to go on about why that GPU would burst into flames, though judging by the images, the issue did not start on the power connector. As some originally speculated, YouTuberBuildzoid blamed the GPUs power stage, not the capacitor. That issue appears to be on Asus rather than Nvidia. Nvidia clearly needed to rethink its stock and quality assurance plans before the 50-series launch. Reviewers expect some growing pains during the review process for a new product, especially one as technical as a GPU. While testing the RTX 5090 and RTX 5070 Ti, we experienced multiple issues where the PC would load to a black screen after booting from shutoff or after an extended sleep period. Nvidia said itrepaired those issues with its latest driver update, 572.47, though users continue expressing discontent on the official Nvidia forums. Nvidia reps told users they are still investigating the issue. Historians have long argued these questions about the fierce nomadic fighters who contributed to the fall of the Roman empire and the beginning of the Dark Ages in Europe.One dominant theory about Hunnic origin posits that the equestrian warriors originated in what is now Mongolia, during the Xiongnu Empire. They then swept westward toward Europe, pivoted south through Germany, leaving death and destruction in their wake. However, there is a 300-year gap before the collapse of the Xiongnu Empire and the Huns appearing in Europe around 370 C.E. Scholars have wondered if DNA evidence could fill that gap, according to a report in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.Tracking Genetic FootprintsA group of researchers did just that, by analyzing the DNA of 370 individuals that lived from the 2nd century B.C.E. to 6th century C.E. They took samples from sites along the Hunnic conquest path, from the Mongolian steppe, through central Asia, and into the Carpathian Basin in Europe. They especially looked at sites featuring traits linked to nomadic-style burials.Their findings did not match their expectations. Only a small group of Hun-period individual genomes shared key genetic markers of late Xiongnu Empire leaders. As the Huns made their move from Mongolia to Europe, warriors from along the route may have joined them. DNA and archaeological evidence reveal a patchwork of ancestries, pointing to a complex process of mobility and interaction rather than a mass migration, Zsfia Rcz of the Etvs Lornd University in Budapest and an author of the study added in the news release.Although the Huns' conquests changed the political and cultural landscape of Europe, their DNA contributions are more mixed. A migration that started in Asia saw its genetic footprints tilting more toward European ancestry as the army fought its way westward.New Questions for Hun SocietyThe findings contrast with a later wave of European invaders: the Avars, who fled their East-Asian empire after being defeated by the Turks two centuries after the Huns brief reign. Many of the Avar ancestors still retained East Asian genetic markers. Apple users have long requested the option to transfer digital contentlike movies and appsbetween two accounts, and those wishes have now been granted. Whether you use two accounts in tandem, youre moving from an old account to a new one, or another reason, you can now move your digital stuff between accounts.There are some important caveats to bear in mind: iCloud data isnt included, for example, so you need to take care of that separately. Youre also going to be abandoning any personalized recommendations in the secondary account after you move everything to a primary one. If this is something you need to do, heres how to do it.Before you get startedTV and movie purchases will be moved over. Screenshot: Apple This process focuses on moving purchased apps, music, books, shows, and movies from one Apple Account (the secondary account) to another (the primary account). You need to know the email address or phone number for both accounts, as well as the passwords, and the accounts shouldnt be shared with anyone else (as with Family Sharing, for example).Two-factor authentication needs to be enabled for both accounts, and they both need to be set to the same country and region as far as purchases go. Make sure youre running the latest version of iOS or iPadOS on your deviceyou need an iPhone or an iPad to complete this process.As well as the purchases moving from the secondary to the primary account, the subscriptions and the payment methods do as well. If youve set up Apple Music and Apple Podcasts, this information will also transfer and replace the equivalent data on the primary accountso if this applies to you, make sure the primary account libraries are okay to be overwritten.The secondary account sticks around, but you will no longer be able to purchase anything with itall of that transfers to the primary account. If you have remaining credit in your secondary account (from a gift card, for example), then get it all spent and cleared before you start the migration process.Finally, make sure you have payment information (like debit cards) in hand for both accounts before you get the migration started: Youll be asked to verify the payment information as everything is moved over, and then going forward you can make all of your purchases from the primary account.Migrating purchasesHead to Media & Purchases on your device. Screenshot: Apple Thats quite a lot to take in before you get started, but the actual migration process is relatively straightforward. On your iPhone or iPad, open the Settings screen, tap your name, then tap Media & Purchases: This should be the secondary account, and a different one to the main account for the device.If it isnt, sign out first and then sign into your secondary Apple account here. You can then tap View Account, scroll down, and select Migrate Purchases. Youll be given a chance to review all the information for both accounts, and everything youre moving over, before the transfer gets started.Apple doesnt offer an estimate of how long everythings going to take, but you should get a confirmation on this screen when its done. Emails will also be dispatched to the inboxes for both accounts, to say the process is complete.At that point, you can then sign into the primary account in the Media & Purchases part of Settings. This is actually more of a merging of two accounts in some ways, rather than a transfer, so bear that in mind: Its really for users who have older accounts hanging around and want to move to one single account.You can undo a migration if you want, though not everything will be rolled back (payment information will be lost, so youll need to set that up again). If you want to undo a migration, go to Settings on your device and tap your name then Media & Purchases: Choose View Account and then Undo Migration to set the process going. If you undo a migration, youll be blocked from migrating again using the same accounts for a year.
