• Russia is relying so heavily on North Korea that it's getting 50% of its ammo from Pyongyang, Ukraine's spy chief says
    www.businessinsider.com
Ukraine's military intelligence chief said North Korea is covering 50% of Russia's war ammo needs.Kyrylo Budanov said it's another sign of how heavily Pyongyang is contributing to the war.His comment also comes as Ukraine has been trying to hit Russia's ammo supply.North Korea is providing Russia with half of the ammunition used by Moscow against Ukraine, the head of Kyiv's military intelligence agency said on Sunday."They heavily rely on well, we can now say it their strategic ally, North Korea, that is covering for practically 50% of Russia's need for munitions," Kyrylo Budanov, the head of Ukraine's military intelligence service, told reporters. "Artillery shells, in particular."Speaking at a press conference in Kyiv, Budanov said Pyongyang was also providing Russia with 155mm self-propelled howitzers and multiple-launch rocket systems. He has previously said that these were the M1989 "Koksan" howitzer and the M1991 system.Over the last year, North Korea has increasingly dedicated resources to help Russia sustain its war against Ukraine. It deployed an estimated 11,000 to 12,000 troops in Kursk late last year.Pyongyang's involvement comes as Moscow and Kyiv focus on outlasting each other along the largely stagnant front lines and as Russia digs deep into its economy to maintain recruitment and weapons production.North Korea isn't giving its resources away for free. Its leader, Kim Jong Un, is reported by South Korean intelligence to be receiving technological assistance from Russian experts, as well as food and cash from Moscow.Large-scale ammunition shipments from Pyongyang could especially frustrate Ukraine's effort to exhaust Moscow's supply by targeting factories and depots deep inside Russian territory with drone strikes.Ukraine's military chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi, said in January that Russia was expending about 40,000 artillery rounds per day, but that the strikes had pushed that count "significantly lower."Meanwhile, the head of Ukraine's foreign intelligence, Oleh Ivashchenko, also said at the Sunday press conference that Russia plans to locally manufacture 7 million artillery rounds and mines in 2025."Russia clearly understands that it produces more of those than the rest of the European countries together," Ivashchenko said.He added that Russia intends to produce 3,000 long-range precision missiles this year.In comparison, the US is planning to produce 100,000 shells a month by the summer of 2025, or 1.2 million a year. And that's already a ramped-up production cycle. The European Union has said that it hopes to produce 2 million shells in 2025.The Russian Defense Ministry did not respond to a request for comment sent by Business Insider outside regular business hours.

A Lighthouse in Rio de Janeiro's Landscape: the Niteri Contemporary Art Museum by Oscar NiemeyerSave this picture!Niteri Contemporary Art Museum by Oscar Niemeyer Donatas Dabravolskas via Wikipedia under CC BY-SA 4.0 licenseLocated on the top of the Boa Viagem viewpoint in the city of Niteri, the Niteri Contemporary Art Museum - MAC was designed by architect Oscar Niemeyer. Inaugurated in 1996, it is a modern architectural masterpiece dedicated to housing a collection of Brazilian contemporary art from the 1960s to the 1990s. Rising above the cliff like a lighthouse, it appears to float in the air, resting on a water basin. Facing Rio de Janeiros Guanabara Bay in Brazil, its circular lines and revolutionary double-curved form stand out on the horizon, offering an open plaza of 2,500 square meters alongside a reflective pool that gives the structure a remarkable sense of lightness.Save this picture! In the 1980s, as Brazil restored its democratic regime, Oscar Niemeyer returned from exile. Confronted with a country where the population had spread to the outskirts of cities, Niemeyer continued designing projects characterized by sinuous slabs, domes, vaults, and platforms, maintaining his signature curved vocabulary. As Juan David Chvez Giraldo explains in "Niemeyer: Space as Invention," his aesthetic impacts through a symbiosis with the site from a modernity that adapts and merges with geometries that echo nature. In this way, Niemeyer's architecture moves beyond the historical modernist narrative, instead seeking to validate and express its specific context. Through the use of spatial sequences, compositional relationships, proportions, volumes, colors, textures, contrasts, and broad geometric strokes, his projects create a memorable spatial experience, surrounding users with unconventional aesthetic stimuli.Save this picture! I didn't want a glass museum, but rather a large exhibition hall surrounded by straight walls and a gallery that protects and allows visitors to pause from time to time to appreciate the extraordinary view. - Oscar Niemeyer Related Article Spotlight: Oscar Niemeyer Both the idea of interaction and the concept of place are evident in the Niteri Contemporary Art Museum. Additionally, as architect Juan David Chvez Giraldo notes, there is a tension between platonic geometry, the mountainous geography of Rio, and the figure of young Brazilian women. The MAC integrates an extensive landscape design, where the building, composed of a double-curved volume whose first and second floors connect externally by a ramp, seems to float effortlessly above the site. As Styliane Philippou describes in "The Radical Modernism of Oscar Niemeyer," the ramp functions as an urban beach, mediating between the building and the city. The more public the building, the longer and more intricate Niemeyers ramps become, generating necessary public spaces and dissolving the boundary between open urban space for all citizens and enclosed space.Save this picture!Save this picture! It is one of the most daring structures and in a certain way it closes the game of emptiness and fullness, or of form and counterform that is so completely and charismatically exemplified in the public buildings of Brasilia. - Josep Ma. Botey in "Oscar Niemeyer. Works and Projects," Barcelona: Gustavo Gili, 1996 The project consists of a semi-underground floor surrounded by a water mirror with a surface area of 817 square meters and a depth of 60 centimeters, along with an upper volume spanning three levels. With 98 meters of free space, the external serpentine ramp leads visitors inside, linking the museums first and second floors. This ramp unites leisure and promenade areas while connecting the public space to the more stable central core, which houses the permanent exhibition hall.Save this picture! On the ground floor, there is a storage area for artworks, a bar, a restaurant, and an auditorium with a capacity for 60 people. The first level includes the reception, workspace, entrance hall, and administrative offices. It also provides access to the hexagonal, double-height exhibition hall, which is surrounded by a circular balcony-like space designed to incorporate the surrounding landscape. In an effort to bring the bay into the museum, essentially turning nature into an exhibit, a continuous window encircles the entire structure, offering panoramic views of the bay. Between the first and second levels, a mezzanine wraps around the museums interior, divided into smaller exhibition rooms. On the second level, five additional galleries provide a total of 697.80 square meters of exhibition space.Save this picture! The terrain was narrow, surrounded by the sea and the solution occurred naturally, having as a starting point the inevitable central support. From it, the architecture occurred spontaneously like a flower. The view of the sea was beautiful and had to be seized. I suspended the building and under it, the panorama became even richer. I then defined the profile of the museum. A line that starts from the ground and without interruption grows and unfolds, sensual, up to the roof. The shape of the building, which I had always imagined to be circular, became fixed and I stopped passionately inside it. Around the museum I created a gallery open to the sea, repeating it on the second floor, like a sloping mezzanine over the great exhibition hall. - Oscar Niemeyer Save this picture! The Niteri Contemporary Art Museum features a radial structure standing 16 meters high, with large spans. Its roof has a diameter of 50 meters and covers an area of nearly 2,000 square meters. The entire structure is supported by a single cylindrical central pillar, 9 meters in diameter, anchored to a 2-meter-high footing. This complex engineering solution was designed to withstand a load of 400 kg/m and wind speeds of up to 200 km/h. The central hall, covering 462 square meters, is completely column-free and surrounded at the top by a spacious area for smaller exhibitions. To achieve this open space, large pre-stressed radial beams were placed beneath the museums ceiling, supported by six columns measuring 50 centimeters in diameter. Both the beam framework and the columns form a superstructure that transfers its load to the first-floor structure. Finally, this weight is carried by a set of pre-stressed concrete radial beams, which rest on the central pillar and extend outward in balance for approximately 10 meters.Save this picture! The circular roof received thermal and waterproofing treatment while the beams were built using pre-stressed concrete, and the exhibition hall floors were covered with blue carpeting. In the access ramp, red concrete was used in combination with the white of the side walls. Additionally, 70 sheets of triplex glass were manufactured for the project. Each bronze-tinted panel, measuring 4.80 meters in height and 1.85 meters in width, has a thickness of 18 mm and is framed with steel profiles. Tilted at a 40-degree angle from the horizontal plane, these panels can withstand the equivalent weight of 20 people.Save this picture!Peter Gasper designed the museums lighting. Towards the central hall, a play of lights reflects on the walls and invades the space. Outside, spotlights were placed beneath the waters surface, further enhancing the structures sense of lightness. As a result, the museums profile is defined by a seamless line that emerges from the ground and rises sensuously towards the roof without interruption. Ultimately, the guiding principle of this project, designed by one of modern architectures great masters, was to create a uniquely beautiful objectone that would become a true act of pleasure.Save this picture! This feature is part of an ArchDaily series titled AD Narratives, where we share the story behind a selected project, diving into its particularities. This project involved preserving and restoring a modernist building built in 1967 in Ginza, Tokyo, known as an example of Metabolism architecture. This building is a distinctive work by Kenzo Tange, one of Japan's most celebrated architects, who devised a creative new form for a small site located in a place that symbolizes Japan's post-war period of rapid economic growth. The cylindrical core at the center of the building houses vertical circulation routes such as stairs, elevators, and piping. The office spaces protrude outwards from the core, giving it a distinctive appearance.Save this picture! The paintwork of the exterior walls was renovated in 1993, and the interior facilities and the exterior were renovated in 1999. This time, structural and functional reinforcement and an overall renovation were carried out to extend the building's lifespan for another several decades.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! In particular, given the unique structural system, seismic retrofitting was planned to maximize the reinforcement effect while minimizing the space required by identifying the building's weak points through seismic response analysis. Carbon fiber sheets were attached to the cylindrical core wall legs (around the first floor) from the inside as bending reinforcement and thin steel plates were installed as shear reinforcement for the lower floors (first to fifth floors.) This allowed for a significant increase in earthquake resistance while maintaining the building's original form and also ensuring the usability of the small spaces.Save this picture!Save this picture! As for the exterior, we conducted paint inspections on the walls inside and outside the cylinder to reproduce the original colors at the time of construction. We checked the paint history of the inspection points and compared the colors with photographs from the construction period to identify the colors.Save this picture! In addition, the underside of the eaves and the cylindrical shape were lit up, and LED lighting was introduced in the interior. This transformed the building's appearance at night and emphasized its presence as a local landmark, day and night.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! For the interior and facilities, we focused on reflecting the needs of today's users. Specifically, we enhanced security, implemented business continuity planning (BCP) measures, ensured barrier-free access, and added new shared spaces and pilots. As a result, more comfortable and user-friendly working environments have been achieved.Save this picture!Save this picture! The project's most significant focus was identifying the areas that needed renovation and those that needed preservation and recording each area's history before restoring it. Phoenix LabsPhoenix Labs, the developer behind the free-to-play Monster Hunter-like RPG Dauntless, released an update on Steam, announcing that the game will shut down on May 29, 2025. There will be no more updates or new content, and after that date, players wont be able to play the game. This announcement came a month after the layoffs that affected the majority of the studio, an estimated 140 people, from last month. This was almost doomed with the Dauntless disastrous Steam launch it was rated as overwhelmingly negative because the studio wiped players progress, removing hundreds of items and instead adopting a monetization policy that some now call predatory.Phoenix Labs was founded in 2014 by former Riot Games developers Jesse Houston, Sean Bender, and Robin Mayne. In 2023, it was acquired by Forte, a blockchain company, which many have considered the beginning of the studios pitiful path.Besides Dauntless, which is the studios debut title, another game called Fae Farm was also in production. Its fate is unknown at this moment, but the developer promised to share more updates in the coming weeks. • While Players Wish to Filter Out AI-Generated Games on Steam, SteamDB Makes It Possible
    cgshares.com
ValveWith generative AI spreading in every field imaginable, and especially in gaming, disgruntled players crave solace in the form of filters on Steam that would allow them to get rid of non-human-made titles. In a thread asking Valve to add this feature, many users supported the idea.I dont want to play a game nobody wanted to make. I want to play things people made, who love what theyve created, one person said. This would be great! I love demos and finding new games but its a slog to weed out games that dont care enough about their game to not rely on generative AI, added another.Alas, Steam doesnt offer this ability yet. However, SteamDBs creator listened to the masses and made dreams come true on his platform by adding an automatic tag based on the AI content disclosures on Steam pages. The first game on the list is Call of Duty, which is funny considering the drama with Steam refusing to add the generative AI warning to Black Ops 6 at first, even though players had reasons to believe it was used. Now, the disclosure states the team uses generative AI tools to help develop some in-game assets.Would you like to be able to filter out AI-aided games?
