• Microsoft makes Copilot Voice and Think Deeper free with unlimited use
    www.theverge.com
Microsoft made OpenAIs o1 reasoning model free for all Copilot users last month, and now its providing unlimited use of this model and Copilots voice capabilities to everyone. Previously, both Think Deeper (powered by o1) and Voice in Copilot had limits for free users, but Microsoft is removing these today to allow Copilot users to have extended conversations with the companys AI assistant. We are working hard to scale unlimited access to advanced features to as many people as possible, as quickly as possible, starting today with Voice and Think Deeper, says the Copilot team. Its worth noting you may experience delays or interruptions during periods of high demand or if we detect security concerns, misuse or other violations of theCopilot Terms. The unlimited use of Copilot Voice and Think Deeper comes two years after Microsoft first launched Copilot inside its Bing search engine, and just a month after the software maker revamped its Copilot Pro subscription and bundled Office AI features into Microsoft 365. Microsoft is continuing to sell its $20 per month Copilot Pro subscription, and says users will retain preferred access to our latest models during peak usage, early access to experimental AI features (more on that coming soon), and additional use of Copilot in select Microsoft 365 apps like Word, Excel and PowerPoint.

  • Enhancing Instruction Tuning in LLMs: A Diversity-Aware Data Selection Strategy Using Sparse Autoencoders
    www.marktechpost.com
Pre-trained LLMs require instruction tuning to align with human preferences. Still, the vast data collection and rapid model iteration often lead to oversaturation, making efficient data selection a crucial yet underexplored area. Existing quality-driven selection methods, such as LIMA and AlpaGasus, tend to overlook the importance of data diversity and complexity, essential for enhancing model performance. While scaling LLMs has proven beneficial, optimizing instruction fine-tuning (IFT) relies on training datas quality, diversity, and complexity. However, measuring these factors remains challenging, with recent research calling for quantifiable metrics to assess dataset diversity rather than relying on subjective claims. Sparse autoencoders (SAEs) have recently emerged as effective tools for interpreting LLMs by ensuring mono-semantic representations, making them valuable for analyzing data selection mechanisms.Sparse autoencoders have significantly improved LLM interpretability by enforcing sparsity in representations, thereby enhancing feature independence. Early works in sparse coding and dictionary learning laid the foundation for structured data representations, later applied to transformers to decode contextual embeddings. Recent research has highlighted the challenges of polysemantic neurons encoding multiple concepts, prompting efforts to develop monosemantic neurons for better interpretability. In parallel, data selection methods, such as ChatGPT-based scoring and gradient-based clustering, have been explored to refine instruction tuning. Despite advancements, accurately quantifying data quality, diversity, and complexity remains complex, necessitating further research into effective metrics and selection strategies to optimize instruction tuning in LLMs.Researchers at Meta GenAI introduce a diversity-aware data selection strategy using SAEs to improve instruction tuning. SAEs help quantify data diversity and enhance model interpretability, explaining methods like selecting the longest response. They develop two selection algorithms: SAE-GreedSelect for limited data and SAE-SimScale for larger datasets. Experiments on Alpaca and WizardLM_evol_instruct_70k datasets demonstrate superior performance over prior techniques. Their approach refines data selection, reduces training costs, and offers deeper insights into model behavior, making instruction tuning more efficient and interpretable. The study introduces two diversity-driven data selection methods using SAEs. SAE-GreedSelect optimizes feature utilization for selecting limited data, while SAE-SimScale scales data selection using similarity-based sampling. Experiments on Llama-2-13b, Gemma-2-9b, and Llama-2-7b-base validate the approach using Alpaca-52k and WizardLM_evol_instruct_70k datasets. Comparisons with baselines like Longest-response, #InsTag, and Repr Filter demonstrate superior performance. Models are trained using standardized settings and evaluated with IFEval, LLM- and Human-as-a-Judge methods, and benchmarks like MMLU and TruthfulQA. Results highlight improved instruction tuning efficiency and interpretability while maintaining simplicity in parameter tuning.Selecting the 1,000 longest responses is an effective baseline for supervised fine-tuning (SFT), likely because longer responses contain more learnable information. A strong correlation (r = 0.92) between text length and feature richness in an SAE supports this hypothesis. The proposed data selection methods, SAE-GreedSelect and SAE-SimScale, outperform existing baselines, particularly at larger data scales. SAE-SimScale achieves notable improvements across multiple datasets and evaluation metrics, highlighting its robustness. Further experiments confirm its effectiveness across model sizes and architectures, reinforcing its potential for optimizing scalable data selection strategies. In conclusion, the study introduces an approach to measuring data diversity using learned monosemanticity in sparse autoencoders. A new data selection algorithm for instruction tuning was developed, improving model performance across various datasets. The method consistently outperforms existing selection techniques and demonstrates that longer instruction-response pairs enhance model capabilities. The approach also improves efficiency by reducing data requirements and training costs. Additionally, it offers insights into model behavior and can be extended to preference data selection or improving model safety. This strategy ensures better alignment with human preferences while maintaining diversity and complexity in training data.Check outthePaper. All credit for this research goes to the researchers of this project. • Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 Rated on Singaporean Website
    www.ign.com
Add some more fuel to the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater remake rumor fire! Singapore's rating board has rated "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4" for a 2025 release. The rumored remake, consisting of the next two mainline games in the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater series, would be heading to a hefty lineup of platforms. The ratings board lists Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S as platforms for the THPS collection. No official confirmation has arrived just yet for this collection, though a countdown timer spotted in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is teasing some Tony Hawk's Pro Skater news is coming. The countdown is ticking down to March 4, 2025.Additionally, Tony Hawk told Mythical Kitchen that he's been talking to Activsion again, and that they are working on something. "It will be something the fans will truly appreciate," Hawk said.Following the by-all-accounts stellar remake of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 from 2020, a remake of the next two games seemed like a no-brainer. Though 3 and 4 felt like an almost surefire bet to happen next, Activision folded the THPS remake developer Vicarious Visions into Blizzard in 2021 and dedicated the team to "Blizzard games and initiatives."According to Tony Hawk, the original plan "even up util the release day" of the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2 remake was to tackle 3+4 next. But when Vicarious Visions got absorbed, the publisher sought other developers. The truth of it is that [Activision] were trying to find somebody to do 3 + 4 but they just didnt really trust anyone the way they did Vicarious, so they took other pitches from other studios, Tony Hawk said in a Twitch livestream in 2022. Like, What would you do with the THPS title? And they didnt like anything they heard, and then that was it.The question remains, then: if a Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 remake is happening, and it sure looks like it is, who's making it? The Singaporean ratings board only lists Activision as the publisher and developer. March 4, next week, seems like the day we'll learn some more answers.Eric is a freelance writer for IGN.

  • iPhone 16e has five key upgrades to entice iPhone 15 users
    9to5mac.com
Apples new iPhone 16e isnt quite as budget-friendly as the iPhone SE it replaced, but its still a fantastic option for users looking to upgrade without breaking the bank. For iPhone 15 owners specifically, there are five big upgrades that come with the iPhone 16e vs. your current 15.#1: Apple Intelligence supportApple tends to offer pretty solid ongoing support for its devices years after launch. But controversially, the base iPhone 15 and 15 Plus do not support Apple Intelligence despite debuting only a year prior to AIs launch.Whatever you think of the Apple Intelligence features that are available so far, future iOS updates will only continue adding to the iPhones AI capabilities. And if you buy an iPhone 16e, youll get all of those features thrown in. If you stick with your iPhone 15, youll continue to miss out.#2: A18 chipThe iPhone 16e is launching less than 18 months after the iPhone 15, but its chip is a full two generations better. The A18 included in the new iPhone offers improved performance compared to the iPhone 15s A16 Bionic. It also is a much more future-proof chip, largely thanks to its Apple Intelligence support.#3: Better battery lifeThere are few things that matter more on an iPhone than battery life, and this is another area the iPhone 16e shines compared to the 15.Here are Apples quotes for video playback, its standard battery benchmark:iPhone 16e: 26 hoursiPhone 15: 20 hoursYour experience in daily use will of course vary, but per these numbers you should expect about a 30% increase in battery performance with an iPhone 16e.#4: Action buttonThe iPhone 15 was the last model Apple included the classic ring/silent switch with. That same year, the 15 Pro introduced an Action button in its place, and that same Action button is now included with the iPhone 16e.The Action button can be configured to perform practically any function you want, such as:launching the Camera appentering a Focus moderunning a timertriggering a shortcutusing Shazam to identify a songor activating any control available in Control CenterOf course, you can also still make it toggle between ring and silent, if thats your preference.#5: 8GB RAMFinally in terms of big upgrades, the iPhone 15 has 6GB of RAM, while the new iPhone 16e comes with 8GB. This 33% increase enables Apple Intelligence support but should also lead to smoother performance in iOS overall, especially as future software updates put more demands on your iPhones hardware.Losses when upgrading to the iPhone 16eIts not all positives when upgrading from an iPhone 15. This should perhaps be obvious by the fact that the iPhone 16e costs $100 less$599 vs. $699.Heres the list of noteworthy iPhone 16e omissions compared to the iPhone 15:No Ultra Wide camera or Macro modeNo Dynamic Island, just a standard notchNo MagSafe support, but you can still charge wirelesslyDisplay isnt quite as brightNo Cinematic mode or Action mode for videoNo Ultra Wideband chip for precision findingDepending on your device use, these losses could either be a real issue or not a problem at all.iPhone 16e vs iPhone 15: wrap-upOverall, the iPhone 16e has a lot going for it as a budget-sensitive option to gain Apple Intelligence support. Getting better battery life and the Action button thrown in are compelling upgrades too. But if youd have a hard time giving up the Dynamic Island, MagSafe, or some other iPhone 15 advantages, it might be worth spending the extra $200 to get an iPhone 16 instead. Will you upgrade from an iPhone 15 to the iPhone 16e? Why or why not? Let us know in the comments.Best iPhone accessoriesAdd 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links. • Space Force Releases Photo of Earth Taken by Experimental Space Plane
    futurism.com
The United States Space Force has unexpectedly published a photo its top-secret X-37B space plane took while orbiting the Earth last year. The image, which the military arm shared on X-formerly-Twitter last week, shows the side of its plane with a distant Earth looming in the background."An X-37B onboard camera, used to ensure the health and safety of the vehicle, captures an image of Earth while conducting experiments in [highly elliptical orbit] in 2024," the Space Force wrote in the caption. It's an extremely rare glimpse at the space plane, which has remained elusive. Even its primary purpose has been kept under tight wraps, with the Space Force only hinting at what its seventh mission, which kicked off in December 2023, was meant to accomplish. The mission involved a number of vaguely-worded goals, including "operating the reusable spaceplane in new orbital regimes, experimenting with future space domain awareness technologies, and investigating the radiation effects on materials provided by NASA," according to a November 2023 statement. An image released by the Space Force at the time shows the Boeing-built space plane being encapsulated inside SpaceX's Heavy Falcon rocket before launch. In October, Space Force announced that the secretive craft would be executing a series of "aerobraking" maneuvers, which would alter its trajectory in orbit by passing through the Earth's upper atmosphere to generate drag.According to the caption of the Space Force's latest image, the maneuver serves an important purpose, allowing the space plane to "safely change its orbit using minimal fuel."As Space.com reports, the X-37B has previously tested beaming solar power from space and thermal protection systems.During its previous test flight, which concluded at the Kennedy Space Center in November 2022, the space plane spent a record 908 days in the Earth's orbit. It's not the only space plane currently being tested in space. Astronomers have closely been following a secretive Chinese spaceplane, dubbed Shenlong, which released six mysterious, signal-emitting objects in late 2023. The craft had also been found to be emitting strong signals itself while passing over North America.Last year, China also showed off a separate reusable space shuttle that it intends to use to ferry cargo to and from its Tiangong space station.Much like the Space Force's X-37B, details about Shenlong's purpose and ongoing missions remain extremely sparse.More on the space plane: The Space Force's Top-Secret Spaceplane Is About to Do a Sick StuntShare This Article

  • Mars Rover Discovers What Appear to Be Ancient Beaches Where Waves Crashed From Martian Ocean
    futurism.com
China's Zhurong Mars rover, which has been exploring the planet's arid surface since May 2021, has made a fascinating discovery: ancient, "vacation-style" beaches. The findings, detailed in a new paper published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, offer the "clearest evidence yet" that Mars once contained huge bodies of water and therefore could've been amenable to life."Were finding places on Mars that used to look like ancient beaches and ancient river deltas," said Penn State assistant professor of geology and coauthor Benjamin Cardenas in a statement. "We found evidence for wind, waves, no shortage of sand a proper, vacation-style beach."The research adds to a growing body of evidence that the Red Planet was once dominated by water, much like Earth today. Cardenas and his collaborators have previously found evidence of lush streams of water carving channels and craters into the planet's surface millions of years ago.Now it sounds like Mars was likely home to massive oceans as well, which would be "potentially habitable environments," as coauthor and University of California, Berkeley geophysicist Michael Manga told ScienceAlert."Hence the 'follow the water' theme of Mars exploration," he told the outlet. "Most exciting to me was the chance to look beneath the surface at a place we think there could have been an ocean and to see what we think are beach deposits."The Chinese National Space Administration's Zhurong rover has been exploring a massive impact basin, roughly 2,100 miles in diameterand called Utopia Planitia, looking for signs of ancient water or ice. Its ground-penetrating radar allows it to peek below the planet's surface to identify rock formations and sedimentary deposits.Cardenas and his colleagues examined this data, discovering similar "foreshore deposits" with a downward slope closely resembling Earth's beaches."This stood out to us immediately because it suggests there were waves, which means there was a dynamic interface of air and water," Cardenas said inthe statement. "When we look back at where the earliest life on Earth developed, it was in the interaction between oceans and land, so this is painting a picture of ancient habitable environments, capable of harboring conditions friendly toward microbial life.""The structures don't look like sand dunes," Manga told ScienceAlert. "They don't look like an impact crater. They don't look like lava flows. That's when we started thinking about oceans."Apart from supporting the hypothesis that Mars' northern hemisphere and its north pole were once covered in a massive ocean, the findings paint a more nuanced picture of how these systems appear to have changed over time."We tend to think about Mars as just a static snapshot of a planet, but it was evolving," Cardenas explained. "Rivers were flowing, sediment was moving, and land was being built and eroded. This type of sedimentary geology can tell us what the landscape looked like, how they evolved, and, importantly, help us identify where we would want to look for past life."It's a particularly promising area, they say, even compared to other water-rich locations."Shorelines are great locations to look for evidence of past life," Manga told ScienceAlert. "It's thought that the earliest life on Earth began at locations like this, near the interface of air and shallow water."Share This Article
