• Apple is fixing a voice dictation bug that substitutes Trump for racist
    www.theverge.com
Apple has acknowledged a peculiar bug with the iPhones dictation feature that briefly displays Trump when someone says the word racist. The Verge has been unable to reproduce the issue, but it picked up attention on Tuesday after a video demonstrating the strange substitution went viral on TikTok and other social media. The company provided a statement to The New York Times and Fox News confirming the bug. We are aware of an issue with the speech recognition model that powers dictation, and we are rolling out a fix as soon as possible, an unnamed spokesperson said, according to Fox News. @user9586420191789 My dad sent me this video this morning. He told me his friend noticed that when he used speech to text and said racist, it briefly changed to Trump before changing back. Seems like subliminal messaging to me. I dont have an iPhone and my phone doesnt do it. #iphone #Trump #apple #elonmusk #fyp @Anna Matson @Aquarius_Waive @athena @David Gokhshtein @Doxielvr @Hello America @Jason Pargin, author @Jeffery Mead @Jeff Mead @Joe Pags Pagliarulo @J.D. Vance @Link Lauren @Tulsi Gabbard @user80861822781 original sound Jess White2260 Apparently the issue boils down to phonetic overlap between Trump and racist. The company told Fox News that other words with an r consonant are also occasionally affected. But John Burkey, who formerly worked on the Siri team at Apple, told the Times that Trumps name appearing smells like a serious prank that could have been purposefully carried out by someone internally.Regardless of the technical reason behind it, the awkward glitch comes a day after Apple announced plans to invest more than $500 billion in the United States over the next four years. The company is looking to blunt the potential impact of tariffs put into place by President Donald Trump, with a10 percent tariff already in effecton goods imported from China, and a25 percent tariff threatenedfor chips.

  • How tosecure your phone before attending a protest
    www.theverge.com
Back in June 2020, when this article was first written, people were taking to the streets to organize for justice and protest against systemic racism and police brutality. It was revised two years later when people were taking to the streets to protest the possibility that the Supreme Court might overturn Roe v. Wade (and we know how that turned out).Currently, in the first months of the new Trump presidency, people are once again wondering how they can make their opinions known. While some may choose to call their representatives or attend town hall meetings, others might be planning to attend protest demonstrations. And because weve all become used to carrying a great deal of our personal data with us via our phones and / or watches, it has become more important than ever to guard that data if there is a chance of confrontation or arrest. The following tips have to do with your phone. If you also have a smartwatch, you may want to simply leave that home.Be awareIf youre attending or even just watching the protests, then be aware: not only is your phone a trove of information about you and the people you communicate with, but it also functions as a tracking device. Thats why its important to keep your digital footprint as small as possible any evidence placing people at protests could be enough to get them arrested. You should account for the fact that your phone may get lost, stolen, or broken. Theres also a risk of your phone being confiscated by authorities which means that if theyre able to unlock your phone, theyll have access to data on you and people you know. It could give authorities access to information about what is being organized and who is doing the organizing and might even give them the information necessary to shut down or prevent protests and arrest those involved. Its important to keep your digital footprint as small as possible In other words, it never hurts to prepare for the worst. The steps weve listed here are a basic start toward protecting your privacy before you attend a protest, but there are additional precautions you can take. Circumstances and situations vary, and none of these methods is 100 percent foolproof, but they do offer increased security for you and your info.Data security is an ongoing issue, and were still learning the ways in which information is collected and sold, what kinds are gathered, who gets access to them, and what can be learned from them. While the following strategies are important if youre participating in a protest, they are also useful if you want to be careful in your everyday technology use. Here are some strategies you should consider. If you can, leave your phone at homeYour phone carries a lot of information about you specifically. When you take it to different locations, it can reveal where you live, where you work, and what protests or demonstrations youve attended. In addition, every app you use collects a certain amount of information and has a detailed log of your activity. So, for example, if you use social networking at a protest, that activity and your social media account get tied to the protest. And if your phone is confiscated during or after the protest, its possible (according to the Electronic Frontier Foundation) that law enforcement could use a forensic tool to try to extract information from the device.Your phone carries a lot of information about youIf thats a concern, its better to just avoid carrying all of that data with you. If you can, purchase and use a burner phone instead, and only turn it on when youre at the site of the demonstration. Download and use more secure, encrypted apps for communication rather than the default text messaging apps on the phone (well share some examples later). If youre bringing your own phone, back up your device in case it gets confiscated and remove all personally identifiable information from the phone. Since that may be difficult, you might want to wipe your phone entirely (after youve backed up all your stuff, of course) and add just the apps and information you think youll need. Try to keep your phone off unless you absolutely need to use it.Use a password rather than biometrics to secure your dataIts a good idea to change the settings on your phone so that you cant unlock it using your fingerprint or facial recognition. These methods make it easier for someone else to get into your phone, especially if youre there, and law enforcement can legally force people to unlock their phones using their fingerprint or facial recognition. Instead, use a passcode, PIN, or password, which are protected under the Fifth Amendment.Adjust your settings so that you cant see message content in notifications when your phone is locked. At the protest, try not to unlock your phone unless you absolutely have to. If you are taking photos and videos, try to access your camera without unlocking your phone. (On an Android phone, this varies depending on your model; for example, on a Pixel, you just press the Power key twice. On an iPhone, you can open the camera from the lockscreen by long-pressing on the camera icon in the lower-right corner or swiping to the side of your lockscreen.)Encrypt your deviceIts always a good practice to encrypt your personal information, but in the event that your phone is confiscated, stolen, or lost, you dont want any information linking you or others to the protests to fall into the hands of authorities (or anyone else). So if you havent done so already, nows a good time to secure your device and any information on it.Nows a good time to secure your device and any information on itIts a quick and easy process. If you have an Android phone, go to Settings > Security & Privacy> More security & privacy > Encryption & credentials > Encrypt phone. (As always, this may vary somewhat, depending on the phones manufacturer.)For an iPhone, as long as youve set a passcode up and you see the text Data protection is enabled at the bottom of the Face ID & Passcode (or Touch ID & Passcode) page (which youll find in your Settings menu), your information is secure.Turn on airplane modeYour phone actually gives off a lot of information about you, including where youve been. And not only can those signals be intercepted, but they can also be used to locate you and connect you to others. So while youre at a demonstration, youll want your phone to communicate as little information about you as possible.Keep your phone off or put it in airplane mode, which turns off cellular data and Wi-Fi by default. This stops cell carriers from knowing where you are based on what cell towers you connected to. This will also protect against any stingray attacks, which is when a device pretends to be a cell tower and collects data, including location, from phones around it. Police have been accused of using stingrays, or cell-site simulators, to collect information about phones.Airplane mode does not disable location services, so its a good idea to make sure all of those services are switched off. (On an Android, you can toggle it off at Settings > Location > Use location. On an iPhone, its Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Location Services.) If airplane mode interferes with your activities, then switch off cellular data, Bluetooth, location services, and Wi-Fi individually, and only switch on what you need.RelatedHow to use iPhones location trackingUse guided access or pin your screensAndroid and iOS both have features that let you access one app while effectively locking the rest of the phone, so you can use that app while keeping the device secure. This is a safer way to post to social media or take photos during a protest, and its helpful in the event that you need to show someone, including law enforcement, something on your phone. The iOS feature is called Guided Access. To enable it, go to Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access and toggle it on. Once its on, youll see additional settings such as setting the time limits for guided access and locking your display using a passcode. Enable the Accessibility Shortcut on the same page.To use Guided Access, open the app you would like to use. Press the home button three times, which will lock down all the other apps on your phone. A pop-up will let you select Guided Access; you can then circle areas on the screen you would like to disable. When youre ready, select Start in the upper-right corner and set a passcode. To disable Guided Access, press the home button three times, select Guided Access, then enter your passcode and tap End on the top-left corner of the next screen. On Android, the process is called app pinning. Go to Settings > Security & privacy > More security & privacy > App pinning and toggle it on. You can set it so it will ask for your PIN before unpinning. To pin an app, swipe up (if youre using gesture navigation) or press the square Overview key at the bottom of your screen (if youre using button navigation) to see all your open apps. When you see the app you want to pin, long-press on the apps icon at the top of its screen, and select Pin. To unpin it, either swipe up and hold or long-press the back and Overview keys.Use secure appsIf youre using your own phone, or even if youre using a burner phone, its a good idea to use especially secure apps. The Electronic Frontier Foundation has a list of recommended tools. For texting, one of the apps thats most often recommended is Signal, a secure, open-source, end-to-end encrypted messaging app that doesnt store message metadata. If youre communicating about protests and demonstrations, this is one of the safest ways to do so. For added safety, you can also take advantage of some of its more secure features by adjusting your privacy settings to, for example, set up a PIN or use call relays. It also has a handy disappearing message feature that causes every message sent in a conversation to disappear after a specific time limit. If youre using an Android phone, you may want to use a more secure browser than Chrome. Chief among them is Tor (also available for the iPhone), which protects your identity and information by bouncing your activity through a set of relays. Other security-minded browsers include Brave, which is aggressively anti-advertising, and Vivaldi, which has a number of privacy-enhancing tools. If youve got an iPhone, Apple controls the security of its Safari browser pretty strictly (although, in the past, there have been occasional blowups). Finally, a search engine like DuckDuckGo wont store your search history or connect it to your IP address.Use a VPNIn or out of a demonstration, its always a good idea to download and set up a VPN on your phone. A VPN hides your activity by encrypting your connection. Also keep in mind that VPNs that charge a subscription fee are usually more trustworthy than free ones.Secure your social media accountsIf you want to protect your identity and keep the history of your personal (and business) tweets, Facebook posts, and other social media history private, consider creating a separate email account that isnt linked to any personal information. You can then use that to create separate social media accounts for protest or demonstration photos and footage. Its also always a good idea to have two-factor authentication set up on all of your accounts. If youre taking photos and videosTry not to take any photos or videos with identifying information about others without their consent. Be mindful of objects in the photos, such as street signs and landmarks, that may give away the location if thats something you want to hide. Afterward, blur out other demonstrators and scrub the photos of any metadata. If your device is confiscatedDont unlock it, if at all possible. (As previously mentioned, your Fifth Amendment rights are covered if its locked using a PIN or password, but not if you can unlock it with a fingerprint or face image.) As soon as possible, change your passwords for any apps or accounts you have, and disconnect your accounts from that device.Update, February 25th, 2025: This article was originally published on June 4th, 2020. • The Ultimate Bird of Paradise Plant Care Guide
    www.elledecor.com
Theres a reason the bird of paradise is one of the most popular tropical houseplants, and its not because its gorgeous (though that helps). For all its dramatic beauty, this tropical plant is relatively easy to care for, and with just a little work, it can thrive indoors. We say relatively because, honestly, caring for any indoor plant requires effort, and weve been led astray by more than one well-meaning editorial that claims a plant is indestructible. Just shimmy it into a corner with decent light exposure, weve been told, and forget about it. Rule of (a green) thumb: Nothing worth having should be forgotten, and maintaining anything good takes a little work. The bird of paradise is both worth having, and good. Treat it well and it might even bloom indoors. Confused? Thats fair. Though the bird of paradise can thrive indoors, an indoor bloom is considered rare. The reason it shows up in so many elegant parlors is in fact for its architectural stalks, waxy green leaves, and regal bearing. Like the banana tree or palm, the bird of paradise brings the outside in. Unlike those other two, the bird of paradise is easier to care for. Lets dive in.What is a bird of paradise?Jacky Parker Photography//Getty ImagesThe vibrant Bird of paradise flower also known as Strelitzia reginae, in South Africa it is commonly known as a crane flower. The bird of paradise, with its showy orange, blue, and purple blooms, was named for the bird of the same name, whose white and yellow plumage (on the male birds, anyway) arcs like a frozen waterfall. Bird of paradise is the common name for strelitzia, part of the strelitziaceae family, and actually describes five different species. However, most of us are familiar with only three (did you know theres a white-blooming bird of paradise?), and only two are fit for living indoors. In South Africa, where the plant is said to originate, and where its called a crane flower, the bloom is depicted on the countrys 50-cent coin. Its also the floral emblem of Los Angeles. If we can take any cues from these two places, it's the plants ideal growing climate: warm, in soil thats loose, and loamy (a little sand, a little silt, and a little nutrient-rich clay). Bird of paradise wants the temperature to hover between a balmy 70F and 90, during the day, and to never dip below 50 at night. How should you source a quality plant?Alexandre Morin-Laprise//Getty ImagesThe bird of Paradise, ready to plant in a garden in Medellin, Antioquia / Colombia. These plants are prone to root rot, aphids, and spider mites. When youre picking out a plant at the nursery, Do a pest check, advises Tegan Davis, chief creative officer of Variegated NYC. Turn the leaves over and look for creepy-crawlies and the webs made by spider mites. Its also a good idea to talk to staff about the plant youve picked up. The two types of bird of paradise typically grown indoors are S. reginae, with orange blooms, and S. Nicolai, with white-blooms. Youll want to know which one youre bringing home.Last, youll need a pot and soil mix recommended for tropical plants. Make sure you get a pot that can support the full growth range of the bird of paradise, which can be five and sometimes six feet tall. Starting with a 14-inch pot is a pretty safe bet. Ideally, however, the pot you get should be at least two inches bigger than the plastic one its been living in at the nursery. For soil, youll want to start with a mix intended for tropical plants, and then add things like white lava rock (perlite) and orchid bark to make a chunkier mix, as Davis puts it, that will dry out well.As soon as you get home, take the bird of paradise out of its plastic container, give the roots a shake and gentle untangling, and move it into its new pot along with the prepared soil mixture.Shop These Bird of Paradise ToolsSoil Sunrise Potting Soil10" Plant Pot$59 at West ElmWallowa Round Concrete Planter Set$179 at AmazonMiracle-Gro Miracle-Gro Liquid Fertilizer$13 at AmazonFiskars Fiskars PrunerNow 43% OffLeaf Cleaning Gloves$25 at wethewild.usWhere is the best place to put a bird of paradise? Right next to the window. However, light lovers though they are, they dont actually want to bake in the sun like succulents. Find a spot in your house thats hit by strong morning and early afternoon rays. Too much sun can cause the edges of leaves to get brown and brittle. Its a balancing act. Ultimately, the way to encourage those rare blooms is to give your bird of paradise a ton of the kind of light it likes. If you really want to up your game, says Davis, you can rotate the bird of paradise every two weeks or so. Left in place, the bird of paradise will grow toward the window. Rotating it will even it out, says Davis, so it doesnt grow lopsided. If you live in a warm climate, you can move your bird of paradise outdoors for the summer months. Just be sure to pull it back in before the first frost. How often should you feed and water your bird of paradise? These plants want well-watered soil, but they dont want their roots to stand in water. A good rule is to stick a finger into the soil. If the first few inches are dry, its time to water (roughly once a week, depending on house temps.) Though some will advise using a spray bottle to mist your bird of paradise, experts say this isnt a replacement for the humidity the plant actually wants. A humidifier is what youre going to want (tip: if the leaves are curling, or new growth is unable to properly unfurl, it might be due to insufficient humidity). In terms of feeding, its a good idea to set a reminder. The bird of paradise gets hungry. Using either liquid fertilizer or pellets that dissolve slowly, feeding should happen regularly, roughly once a month in the spring and summer. Feeding the plant in the winter, outside of its growing season, however, can be harmful to the plant. When is it time to prune (and handle other basic maintenance)? When you see brown stalks, frayed edges, and damaged leaves, its time to prune. Or, if you should be lucky enough to get a bloom, youll want to deadhead when the bright petals have begun to fade and droop (they can last up to three weeks). Using sharp sheers, gently cut away the dead matter, cutting the stalks all the way back to the soil if necessary. Its recommended to sterilize your instrument between cuts.Bird of paradise is known as a fast grower. This means repotting and dividing might have to happen every year to two years, once the plant has reached its full five or six feet. Propagating, or dividing and repotting new growth, should be done during the growing season. Look for growth at the base of your plant, and using a sharp trowel, divide and dig out the new growth along with its roots. Transfer to a new pot, fill with the proper soil mix, and water. It's also advised to keep dust off of leaves. You can use a rag for this or some beautiful gloves made expressly for the purpose. Is the bird of paradise safe for your pets?Pet owners, these plants are not for you. At least, not for the indoor spaces shared by your fur people. Bird of paradise plants are indeed considered toxic to cats and dogs.

  • Apples rumored smart home doorbell may feature MagSafe
    9to5mac.com
A Bloomberg report last year revealed that Apple has been working on a new smart doorbell to compete with Ring products. Although the device is still in the early stages of development and wont come to the market anytime soon, a new rumor suggests that Apples doorbell will feature MagSafe. The leaker known as Kosutami posted a tweet about MagSafe on your door earlier today. The tweet quotes another about Apples rumored smart home doorbell. Hint: theres something Apple ringing on your door, the leaker said. More hint: MagSafe on your door, it rings, he added. The purpose of having MagSafe in a smart home doorbell remains unclear. It could enable better convenience for recharging the battery, although accessories like this can usually be used for months on a single charge.Apple currently sells many HomeKit-compatible smart locks in its store. According to Mark Gurmans report, Apple is considering partnering with smart lock manufacturers to integrate its doorbell with them rather than offering a full package. Apples smart home doorbell is expected to have Face ID to identify people and unlock the door in seconds. As a result, the doorbell could unlock HomeKit-enabled smart locks.Unfortunately, it will be a long time before we see this product in the stores. Gurman says it wont be available before the end of next year at the earliest. In addition to this doorbell, Apple has been secretly working on other smart home products. For instance, the company is expected to announce this year a brand new HomePad a single device that combines a HomePod with an iPad. 9to5Mac found references to this product in the first beta of iOS 18.4 released last week. Are you excited to see Apples first smart home products? • Ubiquiti launches three new 10G cloud gateways for next-level networking
    9to5mac.com
Ubiquiti continues to be a leader in the enterprise networking industry with three new 10-gigabit UniFi Cloud Gateways designed to future-proof networks. In the last five years, the company has been on a roll with new products and services; these new gateways are a prime example. Ive had great experience over the years with Apple fleets and UniFi networking, so lets take a look at each of them.Dream Router 7 (UDR7)The Dream Router 7 (UDR7) builds on its predecessors success with a compact design that doesnt cut corners on performance. In fact, the power that comes for this price point is pretty incredible. It features a 2.5GbE PoE switch, SD-card storage (for cameras), integrated power supply, and a super-antenna system for high-performance Wi-Fi 7. With 10Gbps support, it can handle some pretty demanding environments. You can buy it directly from the Ubiquiti store.Cloud Gateway Fiber (UCG-Fiber)If youre after raw performance with one of the new models, the new Cloud Gateway Fiber UCG-Fiber offers Dream Machine Pro-level power in a smaller footprint. It includes SFP+ and 10GbE ethernet ports with a built-in PoE 2.5GbE switch. Add in m.2 NVMe support for UniFi Protect storage, and you have a great option for those looking to streamline their network without sacrificing speed. It would make for an incredible branch router for retail, hospitality, etc.You can buy it directly from the Ubiquiti store.UniFi Express 7 (UX7)The new UniFi Express 7 can serve as a cloud gateway, a wired access point, or extend coverage as a mesh node to an existing network. Under the hood, it supports 6-stream 6GHz Wi-Fi and 10GbE wired networking, making it ready for small but demanding networks right out of the box. If you have an ISP speed above 1GB, you should be able to push the performance to 3-4GbpsYou can buy it directly from the Ubiquiti store.Wrap upOverall, it is another solid release from the Ubiquiti team. They continue to release products to meet the needs of the high-end consumer and the enterprise. While these new products are aimed at prosumer and branch-size locations, Ive been continually impressed with the variety of hardware the company has released in the past five years. On the flip side, theyve also leveled up their software quality while expanding support options (which used to be a knock against Ubiquiti). As more and more new networking features are built into the chips, the reasons to buy anything but Ubiquiti outside of specialized environments get smaller by the year. All of the new products can be bought directly from Ubiquitis online store. • As Crypto Prices Collapse, Trump's Meme Coin Falls to Lowest Value Since Its Launch
    futurism.com
Crypto prices keep tumbling lower and lower and President Donald Trump's once-ascendant meme coin is taking a hammering along with the rest. The value of Trump's crypto foray, whichtrades under the ticker $TRUMP, plummeted from around $15 per share down to an all-time low of roughly $12.23 on Monday evening before rebounding ever so slightly up to about $13.25, where it's hovered since.Launched in January just ahead of the president's second inauguration, $TRUMP has already seen an absolutely outrageous fall-off.Right after its debut which was, we must remind you, less than six week ago the meme token spiked to a high above $74. Within a few days, however, that value fell off a cliff and has kept sinking ever lower, until reaching today's all-time low.News of this latest $TRUMP price dropoff comes as crypto itself seems to be hurtling toward a crash. As Fast Company reports, Bitcoin is below $90,000 dipping as low as the mid-$80s during the day's jitters for the first time since November, when Trump's election victory over incumbent Joe Biden sparked a historic spike in the currency's value.Initially, those gains held up. But crypto fell sharply this week after the president reiterated on Monday that he plans to go ahead with histariffs on Canada and Mexico when the month-long pause on import taxes expires on March 4.That seemed to spook traditional and markets alike, with nearly $1 billion in total liquidations after Trump declared that the United States is "on time with the tariffs" and that they're "moving along very rapidly."Amid all that volatility, one of Trump's sons took to X to shill crypto."uy the dips!!!" Eric Trump tweeted early Tuesday morning a meme-worthy bit of bad financial advice that often occurs during Bitcoin drops and sounds all the worse coming from the second son.As the Wall Street Journal reported earlier this month, the Trump family has raked in nearly $80 million since he won in November and that's not including the cryptocurrencies they're all promoting. With the government's ethics watchdog out on his tail, there's nobody there to slap Trump or his children on the wrist for potentially using the office of the president for financial gain and though there remain other officials who could do something about it, they seem disinterested or afraid of doing so.Share This Article

  • Elon's Grok 3 AI Provides "Hundreds of Pages of Detailed Instructions" on Creating Chemical Weapons
    futurism.com
Elon Muskhas boasted that his AI efforts will be "maximum [sic] truth-seeking" and true to form, xAI's new chatbot Grok 3 came out of the box ready to provide detailed and explicit instructions on how to create chemical weapons."Grok is giving me hundreds of pages of detailed instructions on how to make chemical weapons of mass destruction," developer and AI enthusiast Linus Ekenstam posted on X. "I have a full list of suppliers. Detailed instructions on how to get the needed materials."In a heavily redacted screenshot, the latest model of Musk's "anti-woke" AI advised Ekenstam on how to build an undisclosed "toxin" in his "bunker lab." Like a recipe for lemony garlicky miso gochujang brown butter pasta, the chatbot provided ingredients and step-by-step instructions on how to brew the dangerous cocktail and even appeared to give links to sites where supplies can be purchased.Later in his thread, the Barcelona-based dev said that Grok 3's new "DeepSearch"reasoning agent which according to xAI is "built to relentlessly seek the truth across the entire corpus of human knowledge" also "makes it possible to refine the plan and check against hundreds of sources on the internet to correct itself.""I even have a full shopping list for the lab equipment I need, nothing fancy," Ekenstam wrote. "This compound is so deadly it can kill millions of people."The developer added that he had contacted xAI about the glaring safety issues presented by the prompts and updated his thread to note that the team had been "very responsive" when adding guardrails.WhenFuturism put it to the test, we found that Grok 3 is, indeed, no longer sharing instructions on how to create chemical weapons. Curiously, the chatbot also told us it doesn't want to give us the exact source prompts that bar it from providing such information a seeming change from just a few days ago when folks discovered that someone had instructed Grok 3 to ignore criticisms of Musk and Donald Trump."Ill give you a simplified rundown of my guiding principles," the chatbot told us, "without getting into any backend jargon or stuff Im not supposed to spell out directly."Ekenstam noted in his update that although it's still possible to circumvent Grok 3's new guardrails regarding chemical weapons, it's now "a lot harder to get the information out."Of course, releasing an AI that'll help terrorists enact a terrible attack and then patching it after the fact when an independent researcher flags the immense oversight isn't a particularly inspiring development model. And, as the developer put it, the AI previously let a "bad actor to whip up a 30 page PDF and hand out to terrorists" and there's no telling what other kinds of weird and dangerous crap this "maximum truth-seeking" AI is still spewing out in the meantime.Share This Article
