Submitted by WA ContentsThe Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw acts as "a vitrine of light" by playing with levels of galleriesPoland Architecture News - Feb 27, 2025 - 14:59 html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/loose.dtd"In its brand-new location in the historic Plac Defilad (Parade Square), created by New York-based architecture firm Thomas Phifer and Partners, the Museum of Modern Art (MSN Warsaw) debuted its first exhibition in Warsaw, Poland. The exhibition, The Impermanent: Four Takes on the Collection, explores how modernism and its artistic, political, and economic ramifications have been interpreted by artists worldwide. The show, which draws from the Museum's collections of over 4,300 pieces by Polish and foreign artists, is a reflection of the evolution of the visual arts over the past 70 years. The show is free to enter, thanks to the Museum's strategic cooperation with Audi.More than 150 pieces from the 1950s to the present are on display, with half of them being produced by female artists. The Impermanent, the Museum's largest show to date since its founding in 2005, has over 100 artists.Image Maja WirkusNamed Museum of Modern Art (MSN Warsaw), the 213,000-square-foot (19,788 square meters) building includes 48,911 square feet (4,544 square meters) of space for long-term and temporary exhibitions, a 150-seat theatre, state-of-the-art conservation studios, a performance auditorium, education spaces, and bookshop and caf on the ground floor, which is always free and open to the public.Image Maja Wirkus"A vitrine of light"Thomas Phifer and Partners designed a linear white-clad structure that features large windows on its faade, with galleries and sculptural staircases that serve as "a vitrine of light."The Museum serves as the focal point of the regeneration of Parade Square, the largest public square in Europe and a meeting spot for Varsovians since the 1950s. It is framed on one side by the Palace of Culture and Science, which dates back to the Soviet era, and on the other by an arcade of stores and shopping centers.Image Marcin Czechowicz"Our design for the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw imagined the building as a vitrine of light. The galleries now serve as catalysts for Warsaw's artistic voice, the remarkable cultural renaissance exemplified by this inaugural exhibition," said Thomas Phifer, founder of Thomas Phifer and Partners."The building is not only a museum but also a town hall where Varsovians can participate in the life and culture of their city," Phifer added.Image Marcin CzechowiczThe MSN Warsaw building is made up of two rectangular forms and is arranged horizontally, in contrast to the Palace of Culture and Science's verticality. Its distinctive faade, made of white cast-in-place concrete that was expertly created by local artisans, conveys the spirit of the organization and provides a timeless and enduring presence. The building's horizontal window ribbon, which filters clerestory light into the second-floor galleries, punctuates the faade. Setting the scene for the experience inside, a continuous arcade acts as a transitional area between the city and the Museum.Image Marcin CzechowiczAt the center of the museum is a massive, classically-inspired double-symmetrical stairway that is bathed with natural light and provides a communal area.In addition to providing ample views of the city and the Museum, the ground floor's openness serves as a focal point for gatherings. The entrances to the main suites of connected galleries on the two upper floors are also arranged in the center area.On the two main exhibition levels, each gallery suite has windowed "city rooms" lined with European ash that provide framed views of Warsaw and spaces for rest and contemplation.Image Marcin CzechowiczEach fixed gallery has a varied size and proportion, with heights varying from 4 meters (13 feet) to 7.5 meters (25 feet). The galleries are activated throughout the day by a system of louvres and scrims that control natural light.Continuous diffused sunshine enters the galleries through the ceiling, which is known as the building's "fifth facade." Terrazzo floors in the galleries are sophisticated yet long-lasting.The forum is gently enclosed by recently planted honey locust trees along the ground-level faade.Image Marcin CzechowiczThe Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw (MSN Warsaw), a public organization founded in 2005, is dedicated to gathering, showcasing, and analyzing art created worldwide since 1989.The Museum has more than 4,300 pieces that it has collected over the last 20 years, with a wide range of interests in visual arts, graphic design, industrial design, architecture, performance, and multimedia art.Image Marcin CzechowiczThomas Phifer and Partners' first European project, the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Poland (MSN Warsaw), is also the museum's first permanent location since its establishment in 2005 as a collecting organization specializing in art produced since 1989.Since establishing Thomas Phifer and Partners in 1997, Thomas Phifer has finished projects such as the United States Courthouse in Salt Lake City, Utah, the Brochstein Pavilion in Houston, Texas, and homes all over the United States. He has also expanded the Glenstone Museum in Potomac, Maryland, the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, New York, and the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, North Carolina, as well as the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Poland. • Its the end of architecture Patrik Schumacher declares war on woke culture
    www.bdonline.co.uk
Blaming a decline in architectural education, the principal of Zaha Hadid Architects claims universities have replaced design rigour with political discourse, stifling innovationSource: Zaha Hadid ArchitectsPatrik SchumacherPatrik Schumacher, principal of Zaha Hadid Architects, has claimed that architecture as a discipline has ceased to exist, blaming woke virtue-signalling, political distractions and stagnation in architectural education for its supposed demise. In a 13,000-word essay titled The End of Architecture, published in the Serbianarchitecture and philosophy journal Khrein, Schumacher argues that architecture has self-dissolved, eroding its intellectual and professional autonomy under the pressures of anti-capitalist politicisation and woke virtue-signalling.The architect, who succeeded Zaha Hadid as head of her eponymous firm following her death in 2016, claims the discipline has abandoned its theoretical foundations, returning to a state of mere craft devoid of innovation. The bulk of architecture designed in 2024 could have been designed in 1974 or indeed in 1924. It is not only stagnant but positively regressive, he writes. All styles, with the exception of parametricism are retro-styles: minimalism, neo-modernism, neo-rationalism, neo-classicism, neo-historicism, neo-postmodernism.Schumacher claims that architecture has abandoned its role as a driver of innovation, arguing that the profession has become preoccupied with political and social issues at the expense of technological and theoretical progress. He describes architecture as a discourse that is geared towards permanent innovation, historically shaped by the need for a permanently updated built environment.Rigorous architectural discourse has been replaced with woke studies, woke criticism, and woke polemical, artistic-symbolic illustrations standing in for absent design projectsHowever, he argues that this focus has been lost, with universities, exhibitions, conferences and magazines now dominated by discussions on climate change, racism, Eurocentrism, decolonisation, degrowth topics which, he claims, relate only negatively to contemporary architecture. He suggests that this shift has contributed to the stagnation of the discipline, sidelining its core function ofadvancing new design practices.Schumacher singles out architectural education as a key factor in this perceived decline, arguing that the prevailing woke culture in universities now repels students with intellectual ambition. He suggeststhat rigorous architectural discourse has been replaced with woke studies, woke criticism, and woke polemical, artistic-symbolic illustrations standing in for absent design projects. He claims that critique of student work is now avoided, creating an incestuous academic culture of dilettante distraction. He further argues that architecture has lost its theoretical foundation, claiming that the discipline has self-dissolved and eroded its intellectual and professional autonomy. He contends that architecture has abandoned its critical discourse and devolved into a fragmented practice now operating on the level of a mere craft rather than a science-based, academic discipline.>> Also read:Schumacher blasts lack of architecture at Venice BiennaleHe insists that theoretical treatises are essential, maintaining that architecture, as distinguished from mere building, is inherently connected to architectural discourse and theory.Schumacher has a history of controversial interventions in architectural discourse, having previously suggested the privatisation of public land and the abolition of social housing as possible ways to address Londons housing crisis. The article restates his previous criticism of the Venice Architecture Biennale, which heattacked in 2023 for its lack of architecture. In his latest critique, Schumacher reiterates this argument, claiming that the 2023 Venice Biennale illustrated how Western architectural culture had become shamefaced and guilt-ridden. In contrast, he argues that Chinese architects exhibited a sense of full force and self-confidence, with the Chinese national pavilion delivering virtually all the architecture on display in Venice. This, he suggests, raises the question: Will architecture end only in the West, while continuing in the East?Only through such recalibration can architecture emerge from its current dissolution and reclaim its role as a distinct and essential function systemSchumachers critique aligns with a broader backlash against liberal orthodoxy, typified by Donald Trumps re-election and a movement framing itself as a defence of free speech against progressive dogma. His argument echoes wider claims that institutions have stifled intellectual rigour in favour of ideology. His latest broadside against the state of the profession is likely to provoke further debate, particularly given his assertion that the voluntary self-dissolution of architecture is already a fait accompli.Despite his bleak assessment, Schumacher calls for the discipline to reassert architectures specific social function by reclaiming agency and re-establishing [architectures] critical discourse to foster innovation aligned with societal progress. He argues that only through such recalibration can architecture emerge from its current dissolution and reclaim its role as a distinct and essential function system in the development process of contemporary society.Khrein: Journal for Architecture and Philosophy is a biannual, peer-reviewed, open-access publication from the Institute for Philosophy and Social Theory at the University of Belgrade. It claims to explore the intersection of architecture and philosophy, aiming to deepen the dialogue between the two disciplines and transcend their boundaries.

First, log into your streaming service subscription account and make sure the address registered for the account is an address in the correct viewing area. If not, you may need to change the physical address on file with your account. Second, some smart TVs -- like Roku -- don't have VPN apps you can install directly on the device itself. Instead, you'll have to install the VPN on your router or the mobile hotspot you're using (like your phone) so that any device on its Wi-Fi network now appears in the correct viewing location. All of the VPN providers we recommend have helpful instructions on their main site for quickly installing the VPN on your router. In some cases with smart TV services, after you install a cable network's sports app, you'll be asked to verify a numeric code or click a link sent to your email address on file for your smart TV. This is where having a VPN on your router will also help, since both devices will appear to be in the correct location. And remember, browsers can often give away a location despite using a VPN, so be sure you're using a privacy-first browser to log into your services. We normally recommendBrave.

They play essential roles in the body, likedecreasing inflammation, keeping our brainhealthy and immune system functioning. And don't forget about the role they play inheart health and fetal development. Unlike other nutrients, our bodies can't naturally produce omega-3s.If you're an avid fish eater, you likely get enough omega-3s from your diet. But if you don't eat fish, have a history of heart attacks or have elevated levels of triglycerides, a supplement can be a good addition to your daily routine. We pulled together a list of the top brands on the market so it's easy to find the best omega-3 supplement for your needs. Before taking an omega-3 supplement, talk to your doctor about the dosage, especially if you take an anticoagulant or antiplatelet medication. GNC Omega-3 supplements commonly have fairly large pills, generally measuring from half an inch to an inch. For some, that poses a problem. GNC offers an alternative with its mini fish oil softgels. The GNC Triple Strength Fish Oil Mini wins the best overall omega-3 supplement for its size and concentration of omega-3s.The small softgels are enteric-coated, which means there's a polymer applied to the outside of the softgel to keep it from dissolving in the stomach. The softgels then move to the small intestine, where they are digested and released. It also means there isn't a fishy aftertaste.GNC Triple Strength Fish Oil Mini has a good concentration of omega-3s EPA (734 mg) and DHA (266 mg).Cost: $35.59 for 240 mini softgelsOmega-3 content per serving: 1,065 mg of omega-3 per two softgelsBest features:The GNC Mini softgels are smaller than the average size of omega-3 supplements, which is good for people who have trouble swallowing large pills. This fish oil supplement is ConsumerLab tested and approved. This shows that the product is free of heavy metals.Things to consider:The dosage of this GNC fish oil supplement is two softgels. It's somewhat of a trade-off -- they are smaller pills, but you have to take two of them. Costco For bulk buyers, consider the Kirkland Signature Natural Fish Oil supplement. It's inexpensive at $18 for 400 capsules. This omega-3 supplement doesn't have all the bells and whistles other brands have -- it's a basic, no-fuss option for people who don't need a high dose of fish oil. Kirkland Signature fish oil supplement only includes 300mg of EPA and DHA per softgel. That's significantly less than other brands; however, taking one capsule twice daily puts it closer to the rest in terms of dosage. The softgel capsules are long and narrow to make them easier to swallow. Still, the pills are large; some reviewers suggest they are hard to swallow.Cost: $18 for 400 capsulesOmega-3 content per serving: 300mg omega-3 per softgelBest features:Kirkland Signature's fish oil supplement is a must for people who want to buy in bulk at an affordable price. It holds a USP certification.Things to consider:Other options on the list have a higher omega-3 dose. These fish oil capsules aren't enteric coated, which means there is nothing to hide that fishy aftertaste. $30 at Walmart Barlean's When it comes to fish oil and omega-3 supplements, taste matters, Barlean's Ideal Omega-3 Softgels are great for those who want to avoid the fishy taste that some omega-3 supplements have. It features an orange flavor that covers the smell and taste of fish oil so that you can get the benefits without the unpleasant side effects -- fishy burps and aftertaste. User reviews say these orange omega-3 supplements don't leave a fishy aftertaste in their mouth. The dosage for this omega-3 supplement is one softgel, which users point out is rather large. However, the softgel form makes them easy to swallow. You get 750mg of EPA and 250mg of DHA omega-3s with one softgel.Cost: $35.09 for 60 softgelsOmega-3 content per serving: 1,000mg of omega-3 per softgelBest features:Barlean's Omega-3 supplement has an orange flavor that doesn't leave a fishy taste. This omega-3 supplement has a five-star rating from International Fish Oil Standards.Things to consider:You only get a 60-day supply for $35. Nature Made Fish Oil Gummies are a great option for people looking for a yummy way to intake a low dose of omega-3s. The two-serving dose only includes 47.5mg of DHA and 9.5mg of EPA omega-3s. Because of the low dose, it's not the best choice if you're deficient in omega-3s; it's better suited for people who already get most of it from their diet but are looking for a little boost.Nature Made Fish Oil Gummies are free of any synthetic flavors or colors. The fish sources are wild, deep ocean water fish, not from raised farms. These fish oil gummies are also USP certified for quality and purity.Cost: $14.30 for 90 gummiesOmega-3 content per serving: 57mg of omega-3s per two gummies.Best features:User reviews say these fish oil gummies are delicious and don't have a fishy taste. Always speak with your doctor before taking such a high dose. How we chose the best omega-3 supplementsWhen choosing the best omega-3 supplements, we considered factors like cost, dosage, form and quality. We also researched each product's customer reviews to compare the capsules' texture, taste and size. We didn't test these products in-house. We relied on third-party certifications to determine the quality and purity of the products.Things to consider when buying the best omega-3 supplementsThe market is flooded with brands offering omega-3 supplements. Knowing which is the best fit for you can be difficult. When shopping, keep these things in mind:Supplement type: Omega-3 supplements are known for large capsules. Maybe people in product reviews call them "horse pills." Because of this, it's more important than ever to consider the form of supplement that best fits your needs. There are mini capsules, gummies and liquid options if you have trouble swallowing large pills.Dosage: The products across the fish oil market vary by dosage. Determining how much you should take depends on your diet, needs and potential medication interactions.Fish oil source: Many brands source fish oil sustainably and responsibly. It's possible to take an omega-3 supplement with no fish source; you just need to check the nutritional label, which states the source.Quality: The quality of a product can be determined by the ingredient label. Given the minimal regulations in the vitamin and supplement industry, it's important to look for products with third-party testing that vouches for their quality and purity.Potential side effects: Taking omega-3 supplements does not by itself increase the risk of bleeding. However, if you are on blood thinners or other medications that affect your blood, your risk of bleeding could increase.Best omega-3 supplement FAQ What are the benefits of omega-3s? February 26, 20255 min readEinsteins General Relativity with a Twist: TeleparallelismA nearly century-old offshoot of Einsteins general theory of relativity may hold promise for solving the mysteries of dark matter, dark energy and moreBy Paul M. Sutter edited by Lee Billings Carlotoffolo/Getty ImagesIt might not be obvious to those of us only grappling with more mundane concerns, but for cosmologists bent on unlocking the universes deepest secrets, theres no shortage of problems keeping them up at night. Dark matter is the shorthand explanation for stars and galaxies moving much more quickly than the gravity of their luminous matter should allow. Lets not forget dark energy, toothe preferred solution to the mystery of the universe expanding faster than anyone expected and doing so at an accelerated rate. Meanwhile a hypothesized evolving form of dark energy might resolve something called the Hubble tensionthe term used for a major disagreement among researchers about the present-day cosmic expansion rate.Cosmologists have been losing sleep over such quandaries for generations, wondering what missing ingredients they need to add to their models to fix what seem to be glaring gaps in their understanding. But what if the answer to somemaybe even allof these problems isnt a radical new theory but rather an old one, devised almost a century ago by none other than Albert Einstein himself? Its called teleparallel gravity, and according to a loose collection of theorists who study it, this theory deserves a closer look by the wider scientific community.Dark matter, dark energy, the Hubble tension: underpinning these theories is Einsteins general theory of relativity, which treats space and time as a unified spacetime and considers gravity as spacetimes curvature. Perhaps, then, the answer is to modify, change or update relativity itself to gain a new understanding of gravity rather than hypothesizing mysterious dark substances and forces. But across the decades, theorists pursuing this general approach have delivered mixed results at best.On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today. The best example may be Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND), an effort to banish dark matter that, according to some research, still has to allow for the existence of some dark matter. A more recent addition, dubbed timescape cosmology, seeks to account for dark energy by asserting that gigantic, matter-sparse voids in the cosmos are much larger than most other measurements say they can be. None of these possible solutions come without their own problems. So if these new ideas arent working out, why not return to the old master? In 1928, about a decade after completing his greatest scientific achievement, general relativity, Einstein began work on an alternative form of this cherished idea. His dream was to find a single set of equations that could describe both gravity and electromagnetism. His idol James Clerk Maxwell achieved such a feat in the early 1860s, using a single set of equations to describe electricity, magnetism and radiation, and Einstein hoped to follow in Maxwells footsteps.Curvature is the core concept of general relativity. Matter and energy tell spacetime how to bend, curve and warp. In turn, that bending of spacetime tells matter how to move. Einstein was able to use this mathematical language to describe gravity, which was a huge success in its own right, but it wasnt enough for him. The theory couldnt also describe the electromagnetic force. So he turned to another approach that offered more flexibility: torsion. In this teleparallel version of gravity, matter and energy tell spacetime how to twist, and that twisting ripples outward to affect everything else.Even though Einstein hoped that this new concept could bring both gravity and electromagnetism into the same theory, he never found a path to his longed-for unification, and teleparallel gravity seemed to die with him as physicists focused their efforts on exploring the powerful and paradoxical quantum world. But across the years, theorists here and there revisited Einsteins model, rummaging through its remnants for anything interesting buried in the calculations. They found that if they abandoned Einsteins attempt to incorporate electromagnetism, they could formulate versions of teleparallelism that were equivalent to the typical mathematical language of curvature in general relativity. In other words, if youre trying to solve some problem in gravity, you can take your pick of basic model, curvature or torsion, and get the same results.Whats more, in 2017 a single observation rocked the world of modified gravity theories. That year observations of a merging neutron star revealed that gravitational waves and electromagnetic waves arrived at Earth within three seconds of each otherafter traversing a distance of 130 million light-years. This strongly implies that gravity and light travel at essentially the same speed. Because many theories of modified gravity predicted small-but-significant differences between those speeds, they were ruled out almost instantly. But teleparallelism survived because it allows for gravity to move at light speed.Compared with Einsteins magnum opus, teleparallel gravity has a much richer, and more complicated, mathematical structure. And thats really saying something, considering that general relativity consists of 10 fiendishly complex, interconnected equations. The numerical complexity of teleparallelism is both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, it offers many opportunities to create tweaks and adjustments to gravitytweaks that can survive all current experimental tests yet still manifest in ways that explain dark matter and dark energy. On the other hand, the complexity sets a brutal learning curve for aspiring new theorists while also making it harder for the theory to generate viable, testable predictions. And for the wider community, all this makes discerning whats a good teleparallel-based idea and whats rubbish exceedingly difficult. And the extra complexity on top of relativity gives the theory some troubling ambiguity. Its not always clear that the rich mathematical structures can reliably connect to physical realityin other words, that the math wont just blow up in your face when you try to apply it to realistic scenarios. That is probably why much of todays research on teleparallel gravity exists largely outside the mainstream. But still, progress has been made. Inquiries into teleparallel gravity follow two basic branches. One branch explores the theory itself and its connection to general relativity. Einsteins theory has survived a host of experimental verification, from the orbits of planets in the solar system to the behavior of black holes. Can teleparallelism really be considered equally viable? Under its auspices, do black holes still look like black holes? Does the big bang still proceed? Do stars and galaxies still act like stars and galaxies? So far, the answer seems to be yes, which drives the other branch of teleparallel research: using teleparallelism to explain aspects of the universe that remain mysterious under vanilla general relativity. For example, it might be possible to formulate a version of teleparallel gravity that passes every single experimental test yet does away with the need for dark matteror one that explains the accelerated expansion of the universe. or resolves the Hubble tension. These attempts are only in their initial stages. There is a tremendous body of evidence for the existence of dark matter and the accelerating expansion of the universe and the reality of the Hubble tension. Finding explanations for everything while making sure all observations remain consistent and obeyed is hardespecially when dealing with a complex, poorly understood theory. And then theres an even greater challenge: convincing the ultimate skepticsscientists themselvesthat this is a valid approach. That would take an enormous amount of effort, with nature itself as the ultimate arbiter. But theres a powerful payoff: if a promising theory emerges that seamlessly fits with our prevailing big picture of the cosmos while eliminating at least one of the corresponding cosmological conundrumsand, most importantly, while also making some truly testable new predictionthat would be a breakthrough at least as momentous as Einsteins when he first proposed a warped spacetime. That is a tall order, to put it mildly. But who knows? Certainly not you or menot yet anyway. Maybe Einstein was right all alongeven if he didnt realize it at the time. And all it took was a little twist.

The private Athena lunar lander is on its way to the moon.A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket lifted off shortly after sunset this evening (Feb. 26), carrying Athena and NASA's ride-along Lunar Trailblazer orbiter aloft against a darkening sky here at NASAs Kennedy Space Center (KSC).Athena which was built by the Houston-based spaceflight company Intuitive Machines carries 10 NASA science instruments, many of which are designed to hunt for signs of water ice. Lunar Trailblazer will do similar work from its higher perch. That's a big priority for NASA, which aims to establish one or more human settlements on the moon via its Artemis program. On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today."I'm very excited to see the science that our tech demonstrations deliver as we prepare for humanity's return to the moon and the journey to Mars," Nicky Fox, associate administrator of NASA's Science Mission Directorate, said during a prelaunch briefing today. The Falcon 9 launched at 7:16 p.m. EST (0017 GMT on Feb. 27) this evening from KSCs Launch Complex-39A. About 8.5 minutes later, the rocket's first-stage booster came back to Earth for a landing on SpaceX's A Shortfall of Gravitas droneship as planned. This was the ninth launch and landing of the Falcon 9 booster (B1083) supporting the IM-2 mission. The Falcon 9's upper stage rocketed onward. It deployed Athena into translunar injection orbit about 43.5 minutes after liftoff and Lunar Trailblazer four minutes later, as planned.Athena's mission is called IM-2, because it's the second launch to the moon in as many years for Intuitive Machines. IM-2 is part of NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program, which seeks out commercial partnerships to deliver science and technology gear to the moon.Athenas ambitious mission focuses on the abundance of water ice and other resources near the moons south pole, and the prospect for future missions to utilize those resources for sustainable habitability in space a process known as in-situ resource utilization (ISRU). To fulfil all IM-2s objectives, the lander is carrying two secondary vehicles: a mini rover named MAPP (Mobile Autonomous Prospecting Platform) that was built by the Colorado company Lunar Outpost and Grace, an Intuitive Machines "hopper" robot that will explore the region around the landing site via a series of leaps.IM-2 follows Intuitive Machines' historic first mission, IM-1, by just over a year. The IM-1 lander, "Odysseus," launched in February 2024, also on a CLPS flight. Odysseus managed to make it to the surface, pulling off the first-ever soft lunar landing by a private spacecraft. But the probe came in too fast and broke one of its landing legs, which caused it to tip over during the touchdown. As a result, the spacecrafts high-gain antenna was blocked, preventing the transmission of some of the data that NASA had hoped to collect."This time, hopefully, we land in a more precise position," Trent Martin, Intuitive Machines' senior vice president of space systems, told Space.com before launch.Athena is headed for the moons Mons Mouton region, where scientists believe there to be a sufficient amount of water ice deposits for ISRU research. If all goes to plan, the lander will reach lunar orbit four to five days from now, touch down 1.5 to three days after that, and operate on the lunar surface for about 10 Earth days. The lander's main scientific package is called PRIME-1 (short for Polar Resources Ice Mining Experiment 1). It consists of two separate instruments: the Regolith Ice Drill for Exploring New Terrain (TRIDENT) and the Mass Spectrometer observing lunar operations (MSolo). This duo will work together to collect and then analyze a sample recovered from underneath the lunar surface. TRIDENT will extract material from up to 3 feet (1 meter) deep, and MSolo will test that sample for compounds like water and carbon dioxide. The IM-2 hopper named "Grace," after the pioneering computer scientist and mathematician Grace Hopper is designed to explore Athena's landing area within a radius of nearly 1 mile (1.6 kilometers).Grace will bound from one location to another using its thrusters, inertial measurement unit, star tracker, lidar and a situational awareness camera. One of Graces main targets will be the permanently shadowed floor of a nearby crater the type of environment a wheeled rover cannot explore. The crater floor will be outside the line of sight Grace would ordinarily need to talk with the nearby Athena. The MAPP rover will close this communications gap, for it's equipped with what will be the moons first cellular network.MAPP will deploy onto the lunar surface to test the high-speed, long-range capabilities of the Lunar Surface Communications System (LSCS). LSCS was developed by Nokia Bell Labs and designed with already-available components used in existing 4G/LTE networks.Athena is also outfitted with a Laser Retro-Reflector Array (LRA) eight mirrors affixed to the lander, designed to test the reflection of laser light to enable more accurate positioning determination for orbiting and approaching spacecraft. The concept is similar to reflectors on a runway that help guide landing airplanes, and the LRA can operate without the need for power or mechanical control.Lunar Trailblazer, meanwhile, will make its way to lunar orbit, where it will begin mapping water ice deposits on the surface. The NASA probe's data will be complementary to the close-up information gathered by Athena's instruments, especially PRIME-1, scientists said."That will let us contextualize and extend the findings of the PRIME-1 mission to what we might be able to see in other parts of the moon," Lunar Trailblazer Principal Investigator Bethany Ehlmann told Space.com before liftoff.NASA originally purchased the IM-2 mission for $47 million. That amount increased to $62.5 million over the course of several years due to a variety of changes requested by the space agency, according to Joel Kearns, deputy associate administrator for exploration at NASA's Science Mission Directorate, such as temperature data from one of Athena's onboard instruments."Under that contract value, we have the opportunity to buy that temperature data from Intuitive Machines, which is kind of an example of us not paying for a piece of equipment, but actually paying for unique information that's going to be made available because of this particular commercial mission," Kearns explained.Once Athena arrives in lunar orbit, it won't be alone. IM-2 and Lunar Trailblazer are the third and fourth missions to the moon so far in 2025. Firefly Aerospace's Ghost Riders in the Sky mission and Japan-based ispace's Resilience lander both launched toward the moon in January, with Firefly's Blue Ghost scheduled to land just a few days before Athena. That mission is also flying under NASA's CLPS umbrella, and will deliver a whole different suite of NASA science and technology payloads to the lunar surface. Resilience isn't flying any NASA payloads, but the space agency has contracted ispace to collect some lunar regolith (moon dust) for NASA, which will technically take ownership of the sample even though there are currently no plans to return it to Earth.Athena and Lunar Trailblazer weren't the only spacecraft that rode the Falcon 9 to space today. The rocket also lofted Odin, a spacecraft built by the asteroid-mining company Astroforge, and CHIMERA GEO 1, an orbital transfer vehicle manifested by Epic Aerospace.Copyright 2025 Space.com, a Future company. Mario + Rabbids creator says players want unique independent games "willing to tell different stories"Discusses why he left Ubisoft.Image credit: Nintendo News by Ed Nightingale Deputy News Editor Published on Feb. 27, 2025 Mario + Rabbids creator Davide Soliani believes players are looking for unique independent games that are "willing to tell different stories".Soliani left Ubisoft last year after 25 years at Ubisoft and has now joined with writer Christian Cantamessa (Red Dead Redemption, Middle-earth: Shadow of War, the forthcoming Perfect Dark reboot) to form a new studio, Day 4 Night.Along with other former Ubisoft Milan employees, the pair are working on a new "passion project", though admitted it's a risky time in the games industry to be founding a new studio. Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope - Cinematic Launch Trailer - Nintendo SwitchWatch on YouTube"I think stupidity made us," Cantamessa told VGC, discussing the risk of a new studio. "This industry is really at a crossroads right now. We've reached the point where you have massive overheads, you need to recoup those massive investments, and it becomes really hard to sustain."He explained the studio's financing, from publisher Krafton and Ed Fries' 1Up Ventures, is purely based on stock, meaning the pair have complete creative freedom."On one end, you have a situation where everyone is a bit more careful at investing money," said Soliani. "At the same time, there is a growing interest from the player towards games that are a bit, let's say, out of the chorus. They are a bit different. They are willing to tell different storiesthat's what we are observing as developers and as players."Cantamessa compared the current state of the industry with the collapse of Hollywood and the rise of independent filmmaking. "What you see now is the audience is aligning away from the more studio fare and towards the indie fare," he said. "So I think maybe we're in the late 60s, 70s of cinema, and we're starting to see the Bonnie and Clyde of the video game world."As for the new project itself, Soliani said it's a new IP and while gameplay comes first, it's "merging with storytelling in a meaningful way".Soliani also discussed leaving Ubisoft and assured the decision was not due to poor sales of the Mario + Rabbids Kindgom Battle sequel, Sparks of Hope."The reason I left is not because I was trying to get away from Ubisoft for any specific reason, but because I was searching for something that I couldn't find there... something that we're now creating together here [at Day 4 Night]," he said."For me, Kingdom Battle was a personal project, like the one that we are doing now at Day 4 Night," he said. "It was really a love letter to Nintendo. It's not a surprise that I'm a Nintendo lover. In my office, I currently have a huge Mario plushie that my friend sent me from Tokyo."Further, Kingdom Battle was a "surprise" success, but that meant the sequel was "harder to develop". "There was too much overthinking about it all around me," he said. "So to me it was a bitit was still a joy, it was a wonderful experience because I always loved working with Nintendo and I always will."However, Ubisoft's comments on the game's reception were "a bit hurtful for the morale of the team" Soliana admitted. "Because we just finished working for three and a half years and were super committed to creating a very good game. So, of course, it was not the kind of message that we wanted to receive back in those days."It was a bit hurtful, but nothing crazy. I think that's normalevery development team is proud of what they are doing and always searching for encouraging words, which in that situation, was maybe needed. It was a bit harsh on the team, but nothing that we didn't solve by talking internally back when we were in the company."The announcement of the first Mario + Rabbids game launched Soliani to notoriety as Ubisoft Crying Man.Ubisoft itself is going through a tumultuous time at the moment. While it has the release of Assassin's Creed Shadows on the horizon, it closed its UK studio last month and laid off 185 jobs across the business. The company also looks poised to be sold or taken private, after it was reported Chinese conglomerate Tencent was considering a buyout.

  • Pop Star Anitta Welcomes AD Into Her Rio de Janeiro Home
    www.architecturaldigest.com
Being invited into the Rio de Janeiro home of the Brazilian singer and songwriter Anitta was a dream come true. It was at once everything I imagined and nothing like what I expected. The house was completed with the Brazilian firm Studio Ro+Ca in record timeonly six monthsand without a single in-person meeting. Instead, everything was done remotely. I give them even more credit because Im a client with a lot of opinions. I had very clear ideas about what I wanted. I even made them look at my drawings of how I imagined each space, Anitta jokes. The house also tells the story of Anittas life. Upon entering, you find yourself in a spacious room where the first thing that catches your eye is a mosaic mural in blue and orange. It portrays children from the favelas with angels behind them, a nod to her own childhood in the favelas of Rio.Shop Anitta's Open DoorArrowIt has an art gallery vibe, Anitta says of the space, which also contains a number of spiritual touches. On the floor, a box with stones and crystals has been placed to improve the energy of the house. Details like this and references to Anittas Yoruba religion can be seen throughout our tour of her home. In, hanging above the table, theres a handcrafted Brazilian lamp representing an orisha, a divine spirit in the Yoruba religion. It blesses the food and the meals that are shared here.I needed a really big table because my family is huge, she tells me. Christmas was the first time we all gathered and celebrated here. Beyond, theres a space with an iconic Brazilian piece, the Mole armchair by Sergio Rodrigues, alongside works of Brazilian art: That was one of my requests, she says. The house had to be Brazilian and tell the story of who I am, my roots, my religion.Clay jars (Casaro Pedro Baiano) in front of a mural by Bruno Lyfe (Anita Schwartz Galeria de Arte).Art: Bruno LyfeThe open living room overlooks the garden and features a work in clay created by women in northern Brazil. On the second floor, theres a large TV room with an enormous green armchair: Its my favorite space! Anitta says. The curved details on the walls, windows, and ceiling make it even more interesting. The house also has three guest roomsI love having people over and had to make sure there was room for everyone, the singer says. Theres a room with two single beds, another with a double bed, and a third one with bunk beds that can accommodate up to eight people.Sofas (Toulouse), Danubio coffee table (Sierra), Mellow chairs by Roberta Banqueri (Way Design), and framed works (Angatu Design). My bedroom had to be my own private Zen sanctuary, recalls Anitta of her own primary bedroom. I designed this room myself. I wanted it to be like a cave with the bed on the floor. I wanted to feel as if the room were embracing me. Her bathroom was also a challenge. Her dream was to have a space made entirely of rose quartz, but it proved difficult to source. Then they discovered a pink marble with the look she wanted. It has a very feminine and clean energy, she says.Clay artworks (Instituto Maria do Barro), armchair (Casa Atica), and flowers from Botani Flores.Art: Instituto Maria do BarroEsteira screen by Etel Carmona, Carbone floor lamp (WJ + Basico Design), Mole armchair by Sergio Rodrigues (Agave Casa), and Kilim Terral rug (Galera Hathi).Simba dining table (Breton), Olga chairs by Henrique Schreiber (Arquivo Contemporneo), Omolu pendant lamp (Bias), and flowers by Botani Flores.Jo sofa (Casa Atica), Domo column floor lamp (WJ + Basico Design), ngulo wall lamp, and Abapuru cushion (By Kamy). We reach another separate room filled with Brazilian indigenous art, furniture made from natural materials, and a bathroom that looks like it could be from a Rio nightclub. I wanted my house to be completely Brazilian, with works by local artists, iconic pieces, and traditional furnitureand I think we achieved the goal, she says. This house was originally published in AD Mexico. It was translated by John Newton.
