• Check Out These Beautiful Hand-Painted Backgrounds For D&D-Inspired RPG

Back in December, we featured Esoteric Ebb, a Unity-powered single-player RPG inspired by TTRPG mechanics and infused with Disco Elysium-like vibes. The game boasts a unique art style, featuring a striking color palette, which you can fully appreciate in these backgrounds shared by developer Christoffer Bodegrd. As he explained, these were created using standard texturing techniques but viewed from a fixed perspective. Basically, there are 3D models that are UV-mapped from the same perspective as the camera setup in Unity. A large texture, ranging from 4K to 8K or even 16K, depending on the areas size, is then applied on top of the models.Initially, Christoffer aimed for something more complex and technical, similar to the old isometric pre-rendered games, but couldnt quite figure it out. However, this approach ended up working out wonderfully. As for the framerate, the developer mentioned that hes constantly concerned about meeting framerate targets but has been pleasantly surprised by how well the game performs, running at a steady 60 FPS on the Steam Deck.Have a look at some recent gameplay demos below:In Esoteric Ebb, you play as The Cleric, an expert in esoteric matters and a high-ranking government enforcer. Uncover a political conspiracy with your goblin sidekick, roll dice in intense encounters, rise to become a legendary cleric, or completely ruin the campaign. Inspired by classic tabletop games, Esoteric Ebb features deep and branching dialogs with a staggering amount of choices.Follow Christoffer Bodegrd on X/Twitter for all the latest updates, and add Esoteric Ebb to your wishlist here. • Explore The Injustice DC Comics Timeline With This New Omnibus
    www.gamespot.com
Fighting games aren't exactly known for having the best storylines, but the Injustice series, which is set in an alternate version of the DC comics universe, is an exception. Not only has the in-game storyline spanned two games so far, but its also been adapted and expanded into its own DC comics line. While the series has seen multiple collections already, the second run, aptly titled Injustice 2, will soon be collected into a massive hardcover omnibus edition. The Injustice 2 Omnibus Edition releases May 20, and preorders are available for $125 at Amazon. Injustice 2 Omnibus Edition | Releases May 20 $125 Written by Tom Taylor--who also penned the first two years of the award-winning Injustice: Gods Among Us comic books--the Injustice 2 comics pick up shortly after the end of the first game. With the evil parallel-universe Superman of the first game locked up in a super-jail, Batman now works on rebuilding the planet after it endured five years of hell under the Man of Steel's rule. Of course, new threats reveal themselves, and Earth's heroes must once again rise up to protect its people. The omnibus includes Injustice 2 issues 1-36 and Injustice 2 Annual 1 and 2. Preorder at Amazon If you haven't read the original Injustice series yet, you can pick up an omnibus edition at a very good price through Amazon right now, as it's available for $50 (was $125). Injustice: Gods Among Us Omnibus Edition Volume One covers the first three years of the series, and it charts the fall of Superman after he's tricked by the Joker and ends up destroying Metropolis city and accidentally killing his family, sending him into a villainous rage. Batman quickly becomes the leader of a resistance group, and it's not long before all hell breaks loose between the two former friends.Continue Reading at GameSpot

  • One Piece: Buggy May Actually Be Strong
    gamerant.com
There are plenty of weaker, joke-characters in One Piece that have quickly become fan favorites in the community. With Usopp of the Straw Hat Crew being the strongest example, these hilarious, yet often cowardly, characters show that, oftentimes, in One Piece, power isnt necessarily everything. Still, while pirates like Buggy and Usopp are funny to watch, sadly, it seems that their potential strength in the series is diminished due to their role as comedic characters.

  • How to mount monsters in Monster Hunter Wilds
    www.polygon.com
Mounting in Monster Hunter Wilds allows you to temporarily ride monsters in battle and cause some welcome carnage in the process.Though its a recurring feature, each Monster Hunter has a different spin on how mounting works, and Monster Hunter Wilds is no different. In short, for those interested in taking advantage of the games new wounds feature, youll want to understand how to mount in Monster Hunter Wilds, and how to stay on long enough to make the most of each opportunity. What is mounting in Monster Hunter Wilds?Mounting is the ability to climb on top of a monster and attack it from above for a short period of time. There are a few benefits to this, such as giving you a way distract the monster from attacking you or your allies as it tries to shake you off, and for Wilds in particular, give you a useful opportunity to create some easy additional wounds.Though the challenge with mounting is there are hidden mechanics at play which we go through below if you can mount at least once in a battle, it gives you both a welcome respite and an easy way to get some wound-based attacks in during your encounter. How to mount in Monster Hunter WildsTo mount in Monster Hunter Wilds, you need to perform aerial attacks at the monster. You can do this in a variety of ways; the easiest is by doing a dismount attack from riding your Seikret, but you can also leap from nearby ledges or short cliffs, jump from climbable walls, or using weapon-specific attacks which propel you into the air. When you have done enough aerial attacks, the mount will take place. You know youve successfully performed a mount when you start riding the monster, and you see a prompt appearing on the right side of the screen:In terms of knowing when you have done enough attacks to perform a mount, thats the difficult part. There is a hidden gauge that needs to be filled before a mount will occur, and each aerial attack will increase said gauge. Based on previous Monster Hunter games, there are likely a variety of other factors at play too; the weapons you use, and the monsters resistance to mounts, which can all impact the progress of this hidden gauge differently. How to increase your chances of a mount in Monster Hunter WildsEither way, once a mount has been performed, know subsequent mounts will take longer to make. In our experience, its quite quick to perform your first mount, but the second will take much more effort. If you are playing with other hunters, then collectively chipping away at this hidden aerial attack gauge is a good idea, especially as then one of you can distract the monster during the mount while others wade in with ground attacks. Finally, another way improve your success of a mount occuring is with skills such as Master Mounter, which you can unlock by equipping three items with the Scaling Prowess group skill, as found on early game monsters such as Balahara and Quematrice.Mount controls and what to do during a mountWhen mounting, theres a handful of options available to you; you are able to move, brace, use either a knife attack (light or strong), or a weapon attack. You can see the controls for your platform in the top right corner of the screen here, for instance, are the PlayStation controls:Knife attacks are weak but nimble attacks which can be used quickly between attempts of the monster shaking you off (the screen will flash red when this happens, and you can brace or move to a different part of the body to avoid it) while weapon attacks are slower but stronger, and cause wounds on the monster to occur faster.Though there is logic to using knife attacks to prolong the mount and distract the monster for longer, its best to cause as many wounds as possible (ideally on each area you can climb on) before using a final weapon attack on one of these wounds to end the mount with a damaging finish, all before your stamina depletes or you are shaken off.If youre looking for other creatures to fight, our monster list provides a full rundown of every encounter, while we have specific guides for Doshaguma, Lala Barina, Nu Udra, Guardian Rathalos, Rey Dau, and Ajarakan.
