• Tech companies are cashing in on the bizarre science of organ preservation
    thenextweb.com
Gene-edited pig livers, synthetic embryos, and 3D-printed tissue implants the world of organ transplantation is becoming increasingly bizarre as scientists explore high-tech ways to keep people alive. These experiments are birthing new business opportunities. One company cashing in is University of Oxford spinout OrganOx, which this week secured $142mn in funding to fuel its expansion in the US as it mulls a potential IPO.OrganOxs Metra machine pumps oxygenated blood and nutrients through the liver, mimicking natural conditions during a transplant. This helps the organ stay healthier for up to 12 hours longer than traditional methods giving doctors more time to find a suitable recipient and improving transplant success rates. To date, the technology has been used in more than 5,000 transplant operations.OrganOx isnt the only player disrupting organ preservation, which has relied on one technique static cold storage for decades. The of EU techThe latest rumblings from the EU tech scene, a story from our wise ol' founder Boris, and some questionable AI art. It's free, every week, in your inbox. Sign up now!Across the pond, Paragonix Technologies has developed an organ transportation device that preserves organs by cooling them and then pumping a special preservation solution through them. This helps to keep the organ cells alive and reduces damage during transport or storage, ensuring the organ stays viable for transplant. The tech caught the eye of Swedish medical-equipment giant Getinge, which acquired Paragonix for $477mn last year.Meanwhile, US biotech scaleup eGenesis, founded in 2015, has raised $456mn to advance xenotransplantation using CRISPR gene-editing techniques to develop human-compatible organs derived from pigs. Yes, you read that correctly: pig organs for human transplants.Last year, surgeons at the University of Pennsylvania successfully attached one of eGenesis genetically-altered pig livers to a brain-dead person. The organ functioned normally for 72 hours. The team used OrganOxs machine to carry out the transplant. The endeavor aims to address the chronic shortage of donor organs from humans, potentially saving countless lives. In December 2024, there were over 104,000 people in the US waiting for an organ donor. Every day, 17 people die waiting.Craig Marshall, CEO of OrganOx, said that the company is preparing to launch clinical trials for new devices designed to assist kidney transplants, as well as advance its work in genetically-engineered pig livers.Other companies are taking organ transplantation into the realm of science fiction and raising some ethical questions in the process. Renewal Bio, a startup from Israel, is using cutting-edge stem-cell science to create synthetic human embryos. The company wants to use the embryos grown in an artificial womb as a source for harvesting cells and tissues for medical applications, such as organ transplants. While Renewal Bio insists that these entities are not intended to develop into human beings, the potential for creating embryos that resemble people raises ethical questions about the limits of scientific experimentation. • MATT+FIONA and LDA Design lead co-design of pavilion and garden for Euston
    www.architectsjournal.co.uk
The project occupies the site of the former National Temperance Hospital one of several empty plots in the Euston area to be transformed by HS2 into a meanwhile garden for public use, following the pause of the UKs huge infrastructure project. It is the only one in the series to be co-designed with a local youth group, as well as the community that will use it.The Euston station leg of HS2 is currently on hold. In January 2020, the AJ reported that the governments infrastructure watchdog gave both Phase 1 of the multibillion pound HS2 rail like and the controversial Holocaust Memorial a red rating in its annual report meaning that its deems them unachievable. However, the HS2 team has turned the paused works and project hiatus into an opportunity, transforming a redundant part of the city into a neighbourhood resource inspired by a programme of community engagement taking place on the Regents Park Estate.AdvertisementThis highlighted the need for recreational and safe spaces for young local people, close to Euston Station.Working with the Camden-based charity Fitzrovia Youth in Action, MATT+FIONA gathered ideas through large-scale ink drawings and sketches, which were then developed into a plan.Forty-eight young people initially took part in this consultation, with 18 young placemakers coming together over the course of 12 weeks to develop the concept for a multifunctional pavilion to become the focal point of a garden designed by LDA Design. Source:Nick TurpinThe young placemakers developed the design and skills by fabricating non-structural elements in a workshop at the Euston Skills Centre. At 6m high and featuring a blue timber stage and seating area, the pavilions structure is a performance space designed to be experienced by as many people as possible. Access needs were also considered throughout the design process.AdvertisementThe form is defined by a series of panel shapes, fabricated by the young placemakers, with some surfaces mirrored to catch the south-facing sun. Above the stage, further overhead mirrors create visual effects. The wider public realm of the National Temperance Hospital Garden has been completed by LDA Design and features a maze of long grasses at the northern end. Parterre gardens connect the stage and seating area while small trees and drought-tolerant species add to the gardens ecological impact.Reusing materials on site, concrete foundation slabs of the former HS2 construction compound have been reappropriated as a central feature while the footing strips for previous site cabins help define the maze and parterre gardens. It is envisaged that, when the site is redeveloped as part of HS2s masterplan, the pavilion will move to a permanent location on the neighbouring Regents Park Estate.MATT+FIONA is a collective that empowers young people to be involved in the design of their built environment through buildings, learning and connecting. You can read an interview with them here. Source:Nick TurpinDesigners viewsIt has been really exciting to see a renewed commitment to youth-led decision making and co-production, in not only planning and design, but also in the physical creation of this meanwhile-use space. Young people came up with the ideas and vision for the core elements of this project, helped build the structure, and were able to develop so many skills in the process, including being able to saw, drill, hammer and paint. The Young Placemakers are thrilled to see the community now being able to use this space. This programme has been exemplary of how young people can be engaged to draw on their knowledge and experiences to design better spaces for their peers and the wider community.Ellie Rudd, Youth Leadership and Regent's Park community champions manager, Fitzrovia Youth in ActionThe youth-led co-design process for this project brought the design ideas and vision for a new playable landscape to the fore. This unique project demonstrates the true value that comes from trusting young people to contribute to the shaping of the public spaces that we all share. We are proud of the Young Placemakers whom we have worked with on this project. We have seen at recent public events the power that their ongoing advocacy for this type of work can have.Matthew Springett, director, MATT+FIONA Source:Nick TurpinLandscape architects viewIt has been great working with the young people of Fitzrovia Youth in Action, MATT+FIONA and the local community to make sure the gardens benefit the people using them. We wanted to create a fun but also high-quality space, reusing and recycling wherever possible. Ultimately, we want people, especially our brilliant Young Placemakers, to enjoy the space and to feel proud of what they have achieved.Dafydd Warburton, design director and project lead, LDA Design Source:Jon ShmulevitchLaunch eventProject dataLocation National Temperance Hospital Garden, Hampstead Road, London NW1 3FJStart on site October 2024CompletionJanuary 2025Site area 450mProcurement route MATT+FIONA appointed from RIBA Stages 0-3 through LDA Design, with a direct appointment through MDJV for technical design and delivery stagesConstruction cost UndisclosedDesign team Young Placemakers from Fitzrovia Youth in Action, MATT+FIONA, LDA DesignArchitect LDA DesignClient Mace Dragados Joint Venture (MDJV), HS2Structural engineer Integral Engineering DesignLandscape consultant LDA DesignMain contractor Mace Dragados Joint Venture (MDJV), HS2 (Euston Station Integrated Project Team)

Short Film: Grim By Bart on February 28, 2025 Video Yuval Dubowski & Gilad Harnik present their graduation film for the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Screen Based Arts Department 2024 - a beautifully scripted and designed reflection on a life.A short animated story about dealing with regret, responsibility and finding a sliver of light in the darkest of shadows.Herold wakes up in a dark forest. His car is covered in flames, he is injured and there a monstrous predator lurking in the dark. During Herolds escape he must face his past, the choices he made and the people he hurt. Will he be able to overcome his past, or will he cave in under its burden? And will he escape the forest?Gilad writes:Hi everyone! Im happy to share with you our graduation film: Grim!We have worked hard over for a year. Almost the entire production was made in Blender. Substance Painter was used for character textures, and After Effects for compositing. This was a monumental task to complete: we had multiple characters (one of them is a giant six-limbed wolf); a lot of locations (technically you could argue three, but one is always changing so thats still a lot of work); and an emotional story that had to hit. I would like to believe we managed to pull it off, even of there are some rough edges. Hopefully you will agree with me.

  • This Is Your Last Chance To See 2025s Great Planet Parade
    www.forbes.com
ToplineA rare celestial spectacle is gracing the night sky this February, as seven planets Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are in the post-sunset sky in a phenomenon most accurately called a planetary parade. The "planet parade" an hour after sunset on Feb. 27, 2025. Uranus and Neptune are not visible to the ... [+] naked eyeStellariumKey FactsSeven planets are currently in the post-sunset night sky, which occurs about once every three years or less. However, only five planets Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Mercury and Saturn are visible to the naked eye.Contrary to a lot of media coverage, not all of the planets are visible to the naked eye. Venus, Jupiter and Mars are simple targets, but Saturn and Mercury are hard to see, while Uranus and Neptune are not visible to the naked eye.Venus, shining in the west, is by far the brightest. It's eight times brighter than the next-brightest planet, Jupiter, high above in the constellation Taurus. Jupiter, in turn, is almost six times brighter than Mars, the reddish-looking planet high in the southeast in the constellation Gemini.Mercury, which is currently rising into the post-sunset sky, and Saturn, which is close to sinking into the sun's glare, just a few degrees above the western horizon, so very difficult to spot. Observers hoping to catch a glimpse of Uranus and Neptune will need binoculars or a telescope. The event is mistakenly called a planetary alignment by much of the media. Its an entirely visual line-of-sight phenomenon, with the planets merely visible from Earths night side for a short time after sunset. Planets orbit the sun on more-or-less the same plane, called the ecliptic, so they are always aligned.Best Time To See The 'planet Parade'Observers should look toward the western horizon shortly after sunset for the best chance of seeing Mercury and Saturn. Visibility conditions will vary based on location and weather. You really only have a few minutes after sunset to catch them before they drop below the horizon, said Dr Edward Bloomer, astronomer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich, to the BBC. After that, youll still be able to see Venus, Jupiter, and Mars clearly for a much longer time.March will see the end of the planet parade, with Saturn, Venus and Mercury all passing into the sun's glare to reemerge into the dawn sky in April. Only Mars and Jupiter will remain visible to the naked eye. When To See The Crescent Moon Join The 'planet Parade'The sight of three bright planets and some bonus dimmer planets for those with low horizons will be improved upon from Saturday, March 1, 2025, when a crescent moon joins the fray. It will appear to the lower-left of Venus just after sunset, but at just 6% illumination, it will be tricky to spot without binoculars. It will be a much easier target just after sunset on Sunday, March 2, 2025, when it will be 12% illuminated and just above Venus.BackgroundTo have seven planets in the night sky together is a rare occurrence, with the current gathering of planets said to be the densest for 40 years. For those hoping to catch all seven planets at once in the post-sunset sky, this event won't be repeated until 2036. The next major planetary parade featuring six planets will occur before sunrise on August 29, 2025, though it will not include Mars.Further Reading

  • Reports Says Too Many ESG Funds Are Greenwashing And Misleading

Holdings should generally help attain the environmental or social characteristics promoted.MainStreet found that 13% of funds failed its regulatory adherence assessment. It examines the relevant naming convention of the specific strategy together with the consistency of documentation and decides whether its clear and doesnt mislead, and uses fitting and targeted language. Its 2025 ESG and Sustainable Barometer report analyses over 9,500 investment strategies managed by more than 460 asset managers. It evaluates key ESG and Sustainability related trends in the European and UK fund markets. The 2025 report highlights a clear downward trend in asset manager ratings across each Sustainable Finance Disclosure Regulation classification and non-EU ratings.Although sustainability standards and expectations have increased, several asset managers have withdrawn from key initiatives like the Net Zero Asset Managers initiative and Climate Action 100+ while US managers are increasingly reluctant to discuss ESG and Sustainability. Is Regulation The Problem For ESG?One reason is the growing complexity of regulation, despite repeated calls for simplification. At start of 2024, we hoped for simpler regulation, reflects Neill Blanks, Managing Director at MainStreet. Unfortunately, that was far from the case, particularly as fund naming rules came into effect on both sides of the Atlantic. Regulatory scrutiny continues to intensify, with the threat of fines for those that do not adapt, on top of reputation damage. However, he added, As markets continue to adapt to frameworks, we expect to see a broader range of ESG and Sustainable investment products with clear and specific key performance indicators linked to the funds ESG and Sustainable approach, allowing investors to better understand the intentions of the strategy. These should help to reduce the risk of greenwashing. For a more detailed look at greenwashing, see here. While industry best practices are still evolving regarding the marketing and definition of sustainable investments, regulation still needs to be clarified and less onerous before it strangles the sustainable investment market. The proportion of funds under the Paris Aligned Benchmark regime that are in breach of their required exclusions has remained steady at 72%. The most common violations are exposure to coal mining and environmental damage, human rights, corruption and bribery, and labour rights.Main Street declined to comment on the statistical balance between these, but said the principal breaches relate to holdings linked to controversial weapons and violations of of OECD guidelines for business.Article 8 is often regarding as light ESG investing. It seems even at a lighter level, there is still a gap between guidelines and practice.

The Spanish architectural firm PRCTICA has developed a project for the regeneration and renaturation of the banks of the Somes River as it crosses through the city of Cluj-Napoca, Romania. The 15 km intervention passes through diverse urban conditions, including the historic center, industrial areas, and residential neighborhoods of the 60s, 70s, and 80s. The regeneration and citizen activation of the banks of the Somes stems from an open international competition, organized by the Municipality of Cluj-Napoca in 2017. It has been implemented with funding from the European Union.Save this picture! The competition was won by the Spanish architectural firm PRCTICA, composed of Jaime Daroca, Jos Mayoral and Jos Ramn Sierra. PRCTICA coordinated an extensive group of interdisciplinary and international collaborators with whom they have implemented the architecture, landscaping, engineering, and urbanization along the river's course.Save this picture! The project understands the Somes River as a green corridor capable of connecting other nearby public spaces thanks to the incorporation of a network of paths, bicycle lanes, and pedestrian bridges. The course of the river acquires thickness, giving rise to a set of new public spaces: parking lots converted into squares overlooking the river and riverbanks with integrated beaches and bleachers. Thus, the riverbanks are activated as collective spaces for accessing the river and engaging with its fauna and flora.Save this picture! The project recovers the natural character of the river banks, expanding and modifying the pre-existing narrow and hard edge into a softer and more natural environment. Thus, the intervention promotes biodiversity, microclimate formation, CO2 absorption, and invasive species control. The project redesigns the river as a new social space that functions at different scales and with different programs, a new green infrastructure, and a meeting and exchange space between the various communities that inhabit the city of Cluj-Napoca, with over 300,000 inhabitants.Save this picture!Save this picture! The Somes River crosses the city of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, for 15 kilometers, encountering diverse urban conditions: the historic center, industrial areas, and housing neighborhoods. During the second half of the 20th century, its banks were modified with concrete walls, which established a drastic difference in height and limited the visual and physical connection between the city and the river.Save this picture!Save this picture! This project stems from an open international competition in 2017. It is an example of urban regeneration and renaturalization, which revalues the role of the Somes for the city, as well as the link between the two. The river is conceived as a green corridor that, through a network of sustainable mobility paths, connects multiple public spaces and green areas. In turn, a system of natural terraces is designed to renaturalize the environment, transforming the hard boundary between the city and the river into a wider and more permeable riverbank that allows for biodiversity.Save this picture!Save this picture! The river as a green connector and a dignified public space. The project understands the Somes as a green corridor capable even of connecting with other nearby green spaces, which were functioning in isolation such as the Simion Brnuiur Central Park or the Cetuia Park, thanks to the incorporation of a network of pedestrian paths and bike lanes. Its course acquires thickness due to the activation of a set of new public spaces: parking lots converted into squares overlooking the river and banks incorporating beaches and bleachers. The riverbanks are, thus, activated as collective spaces to contemplate, enjoy, and access the course of the river, its fauna, and its flora.Save this picture!Save this picture!Renaturalization. While it was important to transform the Somes into a connecting spine of public spaces, it was also essential to enhance its context and ecological values. The project recovers the natural character of the river banks, expanding and modifying the pre-existing thin and hard edge into a softer and more natural environment. This is achieved by widening the river section, which supports a system of terraces. It allows the banks to become a more diverse ecosystem that hosts different species of local vegetation, rocks, sand, and biorolls. Biodiversity, microclimate formation, CO2 absorption, and invasive species control are promoted.Save this picture!Pole of community attraction and interdisciplinary collaboration. The project redesigns the river as a new social space that functions at different scales and programs, a space of encounter and exchange between the diverse communities that inhabit the city. The recovery of the riverbanks has multiple benefits, beyond social strata and physical boundaries. It acts as a new participatory infrastructure that addresses both local and global contexts. It proposes a new framework for dialogue and coexistence through architecture and brings together the efforts of a broad multidisciplinary team, Spanish and local, made up of professionals in architecture, landscape architecture, engineering, urban planning, as well as government agencies and everyday users of the site.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessProject locationAddress:Cluj-Napoca, RumaniaLocation to be used only as a reference.
