  • Tour an Artful Long Island Property That Avoids Beach House Cliches
    www.architecturaldigest.com
Our focus was a departure from the expected seasonal beach house aesthetic, says homeowner Laura DeMare, who, along with her husband, Jim, tapped interior designer Matt McKay to refresh their Hamptons refuge. We wanted the sophistication and functionality of a year-round home. McKay, whose work is known for comfortable, collected environments, instinctively picked up on that direction and ran with it. Candy-colored florals on sandy wicker setups was not what led these clients to his door. It was very much about bringing together interesting things for a four-season home, the designer echoes of the vision, which centered on a refined palette of warm earth tones and organic textures. The desire to craft an elevated idyll for all seasons is apparent from the moment one enters the seven-bedroom shingled edifice. There, in the entry foyer, an area rug by Atelier Fvrier grounds the double-height space, where a Haas Brothers tabletop sculpture, bench by Maria Pergay, and several large hanging artworks set the tone. Indeed, the work of emerging artists abounds, introducing moments of color and playfulness throughout our home, notes Laura of their collection, largely acquired by her husband, which brings the space to life. The DeMares and their now college-age sons have occupied the home since it was built 15 years ago by local firm Michael Davis Design & Construction, but McKay and team were able to breathe new life into familiar spaces, where the family loves entertaining friends. The living room of a Wainscott, New York, weekend home owned by Laura and Jim DeMare, who have occupied the property, alongside their two college-age sons, for 15 years. Wanting to update the interiors and include more of their extensive art and design collections, the Manhattan-based couple tapped interior designer Matt McKay after their initial meeting. The space is emblematic of the projects careful planningas evidenced by the custom Sacco silk rug, which features a walkway embellishment weaved around the fixed furniture planand includes a custom Jouffre sofa covered in a Holland & Sherry fabric, a pair of Esfera lounge chairs from Espasso wrapped in suede from Edelman Leather, and an Emmanuel Babled coffee table.New Yorkbased interior designer Matt McKay stands in the homes commodious living room, which embodies his fresh take on a Hamptons aesthetic. We wanted the living room to feel more inclusive, explains McKay of his approach to the airy expanse, with its comfortable mix of custom and collected seating. That called for a bit of a salon layout, where youre not looking at the fireplace but into the room. Given the projects tight eight-month timeline, the bespoke Sacco silk rug, which features a walkway embellishment weaved around the fixed furniture plan, is ever more impressive. As is the new open-plan kitchen, family room, and breakfast area, which had to be durable enough to stand up to a professional catering team or a flock of hungry college kids but thoughtfully scaled and appointed for the couple to make Sunday breakfast solo. In the connecting family-room conversation pit, guests often kick back in an extra-deep Jouffre sofa covered in a plush Angela Brown fabric.McKay designed the Jouffre sofa in the family room, which Laura calls the conversation pit, to be extra deep and seductive. Francesco Perini coffee tables from Gallery Fumi, with black-marble inlay, ground the space and allow for showcasing a Georges Jouve dish and a Gaetano Pesce sculpture. The ceramic sconces above the mantel are by Pierre Yovanovitch. In a corner of the commodious living room, a Paul Evans card table surrounded by Pierre Jeanneret Committee chairs from Raisonn covered in Holland & Sherry hairhide is a versatile, snug addition. You could use it for a game, but also just an intimate dinner for two adjacent to the fireplacereally nice, McKay observes. The Dune light sculpture by Rogan Gregory from R & Company adds a playful touch; the glam-adjacent drapery wears a sheer RoseHyll Studio fabric.Because the clients prefer to maximize outdoor time when the weather allows, certain interior spaces are tailored for colder months and darker hours. Take the den, for example, which quickly emerged as a family favorite, offering both intimacy and drama, Laura says. That corner room, where occupants sink into an incredibly comfortable alpaca sofa and Vladimir Kagan lounge chair and ottoman, is shrouded in horsehair-covered walls. Similarly, in the cocoon-like primary bedroom upstairs, McKay suggested eradicating its yellowish cast, which he thinks people often mistakenly equate to cozy, with a more interesting, richer palette. I wanted it to feel cleaner and fresher, he says, so bringing in these more dramatic colors made a big difference. The walls, notably, are covered in a tactile Phillip Jeffries ultrasuedeevidence of husband Jims particular distaste for roll-painted walls.Ultimately, the project progressed at a swift pace with zero discord among parties, thanks, the team says, to a shared gut intuition. Our first design meeting was very memorable for me because we got up, Laura gave me a hug, and said, Oh my Godyouve nailed it, McKay recalls. The result is a space that feels exceptionally refined, warm, and welcoming, agrees Laura of their creative kismet. A testament to the power of living with pieces that you truly love. The front faade of Laura and Jim DeMares Wainscott, New York, home, built by local firm Michael Davis Design & Construction some 15 years ago. The interiors were recently refreshed by New Yorkbased designer Matt McKay.The double-height entry foyer sets the artful tone of the rooms that open up beyond it. There, a Haas Brothers sculpture stands on a table over an Atelier Fvrier area rug from the Invisible Collection. The bench is by Maria Pergay. The open-plan kitchen, abutting a breakfast area and family room, is a hive of activity for the homeowners, their two college-age sons, and, when entertaining large groups as they often do, professional chefs and servers. Bar stools from StudioTwentySeven covered in a Casamance fabric pull up to an island topped with stone from Beata & Agnes. The space, illuminated by Scott Daniel Designs Mobius pendant lights, also includes Katonah Architectural Hardware and Sub-Zero appliances.Under a Faye Toogood pendant light in the breakfast nook, with its views out to manicured gardens, the family gathers around a Garde dining table on Afra and Tobia Scarpa dining chairs from Modernab Gallery. The dining room achieves a masterful dialogue between vintage and contemporary design pieces, explains homeowner Laura. There, Carlo Scarpa dining chairs from Modernab Gallery surround a commanding dining table, while a bespoke sideboard by Valentin Loellmann from Galerie Gosserez provides an elegant counterpoint. The space is further elevated by a Campana Brothers mirror, as circa-1970s Gianni Celada for FontanaArte pendants and Gino Sarfatti sconces from 1stDibs add warmth to the composed setting. The den, a favorite gathering spot for the family in colder months and after dark, is anchored by a vintage Pierre Chapo coffee table from LAs beloved Galerie Provenance and is grounded by a bespoke rug from Sacco. The custom hanging wall cabinet by Casey Johnson complements the Cassina sofa and Vladimir Kagan lounge chair and ottoman from Wright Auctions. The walls are covered with a Hair on Hide from Arte; the plaster table lamps are by John Dickinson; the ceiling, illuminated by a Foolish Fool chandelier by Damien Langlois-Meurinne from the Invisible Collection, is painted in Benjamin Moores Ferret Brown. To balance freshness with worn-in warmth, McKay rid the existing primary bedroom of its existing yellowish cast, preferring instead to use richer, moodier hues. A Johnny Abrahams painting is visible through the doorway leading into the room, whose walls are covered in a Phillip Jeffries ultrasuede. Corbu bedside tables, topped by Carlos Otero lamps from Hostler Burrows, flank a king bed covered in a Libeco blanket opposite a pair of Hans Wegner Ox chairs. In the enchanting powder room, a hand-painted Gregorius Pineo wallpaperwhich McKay selected for its tribal, graphic, and beautiful qualitiesdances in the delicate light from a vintage crystal chandelier and a pair of sconces from Apparatus.

  • Civilization 7's first in-game event pushed back, so Firaxis can whip out the Bermuda Triangle and drop some beefy updates designed to make your gripes disappear
    www.vg247.com
Navies BewareCivilization 7's first in-game event pushed back, so Firaxis can whip out the Bermuda Triangle and drop some beefy updates designed to make your gripes disappearThe devs hope you'll say goodbye to your UI unhappiness like it's a schooner that's strayed into uncharted waters.Image credit: Firaxis News by Mark Warren Senior Staff Writer Published on Feb. 28, 2025 Firaxis has had its hands full since Civilization 7 dropped, as it's been busy trying to fix and change elements of the game that earned it a pretty mixed response oout of the gate. That mission's set to continue via some patches early next month, so you'll have to wait a bit longer to jump into Civ 7's first in-game special event. This was announced via a "check-in" post Firaxis has put out, which sees the studio outline some of the stuff the next two updates - 1.1.0 and 1.1.1 - will be bringing when they arrive in March. Meanwhile, the need to focus on these updates has meant the first in-game event that'd been pencilled in for March 4 - Natural Wonder Battle - has been pushed back to "a later update".To see this content please enable targeting cookies. So, what's on the way in these patches? Well, the first one - Update 1.1.0 - is set to drop on March 4. It'll be the point when cross-play between PC and Console and will give everyone a free new natural wonder in the form of the Bermuda Triangle, everyone's favourite mysterious bit of water.Aside from that, you can expect "additional UI adjustments, polish, and addressing of reported issues", "refinements to the army unpacking action" and a tweak that means "Naval units will be able to disperse coastal independent powers". Plus, there'll be "significant changes to the modern age's cultural legacy path and victory" that means "AI leaders will also be better at completing a cultural victory", and you'll gain the option to convert holy cities during the exploration age. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Finally, that update'll bring with it the first bit of the Crossroads of the World Collection DLC, so if you've bought that, or either the Deluxe or Founders editions of the game, look out for that giving you things like new leader Ada Lovelace and the Great Britain (Modern Age) civ, the latter of which I assume is the key to building the most depressing nation possible. After that, pencilled in for March 25 is Update 1.1.1, which'll include "additional UI improvements and refinements" that are "just one part of a much larger plan that aims to improve the UI over the next several months". It'll also give everyone Mount Everest, improve AI how the scouts and settles, and give you the ability to give your cities and commanders custom names like 'Satan's Armpit' and 'Satan'. It'll arrive with the second part of that Crossroads of the World Collection DLC.Beyond this, the studio also outlined a bunch of general stuff it's looking to do going forwards, including adding in new maps and resources, mod tools and steam Workshop support, and a one more turn button so you can play on into the future once the modern age is done.If you're still on the fence about trying Civ 7, make sure to check out our review of it, which dissects all the stuff it does differently to its predecessors.

  • Microsoft hangs up on Skype: service to shut down May 5, 2025
    techcrunch.com
After kickstarting the market for making calls over the internet 23 years ago, Skype is closing down. Microsoft, which acquired the messaging and calling app 14 years ago, said it will be retiring it from active duty on May 5 to double down on Teams. Skype users have 10 weeks to decide what they want to do with their account. Its not clear how many people are impacted. The most recent numbers that Microsoft had shared were in 2023, when it said it had more than 36 million users a long way from Skypes peak of 300 million users. We know this is a big deal for our Skype users, and were very grateful for their support of Skype and all the learnings that have factored into Teams over the last seven years, Jeff Teper, president of Microsoft 365 collaborative Apps and platforms, told TechCrunch in an interview this week. At this point, putting all our focus behind Teams will let us give a simpler message and drive faster innovation.Between now and May 5, users will have the option to migrate all their contacts and chat data over to Microsofts Teams platform. Alternatively, users can download their Skype data using the apps built-in export tool. The business caseThe news will come as little surprise to those who have followed Skype in recent years; and in many ways, the writing has been on the wall since 2016, when Microsoft debuted Teams. While Microsoft had launched a specific Skype for Business product in 2015, Teams arrival signalled a new direction for Microsoft in the cloud communications space. Many likened Teams to a Slack clone, but the bigger ambition was to build a platform that would give space for collaboration and communication across a wide range of Microsoft and other apps, and that included video and text chatting a direct overlap with Skype.Microsoft then revealed plans to phase out Skype for Business in 2017, concluding those efforts four years later, in 2021. That same year, Microsoft selected Teams as the integrated communications app of choice on Windows 11, relegating Skype to the sidelines.Fast forward to December 2024, TechCrunch reported that Microsoft had stopped letting Skype users add credit to their accounts, or buy Skype phone numbers, pushing users to monthly subscriptions and Skype-to-phone plans instead. And so this takes us to todays news, signalling the end of a brand and company that was one of the first big tech startups to launch out of Europe in the dawdling days of dial-up.Skypes death knell comes two years after Microsoft started rolling out an entirely rebuilt, rearchitected Teams desktop and web app. In those two years, Teper says consumer calling minutes in Teams has grown four-fold, though he declined to say how many consumers make up its 320 million user-base.Its at a high-enough scale that we feel great about the app [Teams] for personal use, Teper said. We feel we have the mileage under our belt on the adoption by consumers, [who are] using Teams in their personal lives. Weve thought about [shutting down Skype] for a while, but we really felt like the product had to show the end-user adoption with consumers telling us it was ready. And Microsoft believes that consumers are now ready. User numbersWhile Skype ushered in a new era of internet-based communication, starting with voice before expanding to video and file-sharing, the arrival of smartphones and a swathe of new messaging apps have taken a toll on Skypes user count through the years. For context, WhatsApp sailed past 2 billion users in 2020.When Skypefiled for an IPO in 2010, it revealed 560 million registered users and 124 million monthly active users. But rather than going public in the wake of its spin-off from eBay (which had acquired it in 2005), Microsoft tabled a $8.5 billion bid for Skype in 2011, and grew the platform to a peak of 300 million users in 2013.Microsoft hasnt made a habit of breaking out Skype user numbers in subsequent years, though it has teased the occasional data point. At the start of the pandemic in March, 2020, the companyrevealedthat Skype had grown 70% month-on-month to 40 million daily users, as people sought ways to stay in touch with loved ones during lockdown a trend that generated similar surges in rival platforms such as Zoom. The most recent update Microsoft provided was via a blog post published in early 2023 announcing an integration between Skype and its Bing search engine, where it revealed that more than 36 million people use Skype daily to connect through phone calls and chats globally. The long and short of this, though, is that Teams growth and Skypes flatlining is one reason Microsoft reckons now is a good time to go all-in on Teams.Skype took a bump as did Teams during the pandemic, and Skype has largely been pretty stable in the last couple of years, Teper said. And we felt the time, and the feedback, was such that we could make the move.Phone homeMicrosoft is encouraging users to move over Teams Free. This offers some additional features not available in Skype, such as calendar integrations, but Teams Free lacks other key features that were hallmarks of Skype specifically, phone-calling functionality that allowed users to call mobile and landline numbers, as well as receive phone calls with a Skype phone number.Microsoft began depreciating these services back in December, preventing users from adding any further credit to their accounts while also putting a halt on buying Skype numbers. Users were still able to make calls to phone numbers with a valid monthly subscription or any remaining credit they had, but the subscription renewals will come to an end on April 3.For legacy users who still have credit in their accounts, Microsoft will be making a Skype Dial Pad available both in the Skype web portal and in Teams for an indefinite period. Well support [this] as long as users have credit and theyre using this functionality, Microsoft VP of product Amit Fulay told TechCrunch.Despite the enterprise incarnation of Teams offering phone-calling functionality, Fulay confirmed that Teams Free wont support PSTN (public switched telephone network) services, mostly because of shifting consumer trends.Weve been looking at usage of telephony for a while on Skype, and patterns have changed, usage has changed, and this is a step towards that, he said. People have mobile data plans, and when this [telephony] functionality came out many years ago, that wasnt the case.System migrationDuring the transition period, Skype users will be able to download the Teams app and log-in with their Skype credentials, with all their chats and contacts migrating over automatically. The Skype app itself will continue to work in tandem, through May 5, 2025.Skype to Teams migrationImage Credits:MicrosoftAlternatively, users will be able to export their data, though in reality there likely isnt all that much theyll be able to do with it in terms of importing it anywhere else.We wanted to make sure that during this transition, people arent losing their contacts, their memories, Fulay said. We want to make sure we preserve all the things people have shared. And if they choose to come to Teams, well restore all of their contacts and data.If a user takes no action by May 5, Skype says it will retain user data until the end of the year, after which it will be deleted. Blurred linesOne of the big takeaways from all this is how the lines between the business and consumer realms have blurred, due in part to societal norms around technology and trends such as remote work. Skype began as a consumer product that spread into the business sphere, while Teams began as a business product that segued into consumer. Teams today, though, still feels like a business product, particularly due to its name. Do families and friends really see themselves as part of one big team?Teper, for his part, doesnt see this as a problem, given that many of its existing products already transcend use-case boundaries.I think a lot of people will make the transition [from Skype to Teams], he said. If you think about Word, Excel, PowerPoint, those are brands that work for business and personal use for people. We have kids and parents doing their homework in Word, and budgets and Excel, so we have good precedent about our tools being used in personal and work life.

  • Belgium investigating alleged cyberattack on intelligence agency by China-linked hackers
    techcrunch.com
Belgium is investigating an alleged data breach of its state security service (VSSE) by Chinese government hackers. In a statement sent to TechCrunch on Friday, the Belgian federal prosecutors office said an investigation into a cyberattack was opened in November 2023 after it learned about the alleged breach. This confirms an earlier report by the French-language Belgian newspaper Le Soir, which reported that a Chinese hacking group gained access to the external mail server of the intelligence service between 2021 and 2023.The unnamed Chinese hacking group reportedly exploited a vulnerability in U.S. cybersecurity firm Barracudas software. The critical-rated flaw, which Barracuda first disclosed in May 2023, impacts the firms Email Security Gateway (ESG) appliance, a firewall for filtering inbound and outbound emails for potentially malicious content.Barracuda spokesperson Lesley Sullivan told TechCrunch that questions regarding any breaches at VSSE are more appropriately directed to VSSE. VSSE did not respond to TechCrunchs questions.Security researchers at U.S. cybersecurity firm Mandiant previously said the vulnerability, which could allow hackers to exfiltrate sensitive corporate data, had been exploited as a zero-day by a China-backed cyberespionage group to target organizations around the world. Almost a third of the target organizations were government agencies, according to Mandiant.Though a patch was released for the vulnerability, Barracuda in June 2023 urged all affected customers to replace ESG appliances impacted by the vulnerability. It also advised customers to rotate any credentials connected to the appliances and to check for signs of compromise dating back to at least October 2022.According to Le Soir, China-backed hackers exploited the Barracuda flaw to exfiltrate 10% of the Belgian intelligence services incoming and outgoing emails. It notes that while classified information was not affected, the personal data of almost half of VSSEs employees was accessed, including identity documents, resumes, and internal communications.VSSE reportedly discontinued its use of Barracudas products following the cyberattack, which was first reported by local media in July 2023.Zack Whittaker contributed reporting.

  • North Boulder Library by WORKac: A Model for Community-Driven Architecture
    archeyes.com
North Boulder Library | Bruce Damonte The North Boulder Library, designed by New York-based architectural firm WORKac, represents a significant step forward in public architecture, redefining the role of a library in the contemporary urban landscape. Situated at the intersection of Broadway and Three Mile Creek in Boulder, Colorado, the project was conceived as a response to an open proposal issued in 2018 by the Boulder Public Library. Rather than pursuing an overtly striking form to achieve iconic status, as many competitors did, WORKac proposed a building whose impact would stem from its sustainability, community engagement, and contextual sensitivity.North Boulder Library Technical InformationArchitects1-29: WORKacLocation: North Boulder, Colorado, United StatesClient: City of BoulderArea: 1,190 m2 | 12,800Sq. After an eight-year process, including an extensive three-year community engagement phase with over twenty public design presentations, the North Boulder Library opened in June 2024. This iterative collaboration process between architects and community members shaped a design deeply rooted in its locale while maintaining a broader architectural significance.Boulders geographical context, located between the Rocky Mountains and the Great Plains, has historically informed its architectural vernacular. The librarys triangular site demanded a carefully considered architectural response, balancing urban connectivity with environmental sensitivity. WORKacs design achieves this by orienting the building to maximize views toward the Flatirons, minimizing its visual impact on neighboring residences while fostering an open, inviting civic presence. The library is conceived as an urban connector, providing seamless access to the residential community to the north and the Fourmile Canyon Creek Park to the south. The site plan encourages pedestrian movement, reinforcing that libraries should be porous, accessible spaces rather than isolated monuments. The librarys irregular geometryan interplay of angular formsresponds to the sites constraints while generating a dynamic, non-hierarchical spatial experience. The buildings low northern side respects the scale of the surrounding residential area, while the higher southern elevation engages with the park and creek.Internally, the central public spaces are elevated to the second floor, a strategy that allows for after-hours access to community and ESL classrooms through an accessible ramp, transforming circulation into an active, participatory experience. A public art installation by Daily Tous les Jours enhances this element, playing music as visitors ascend or descend the ramp. The ground floor, meanwhile, remains open and flexible, featuring multiple entry points that encourage a fluid movement between indoor and outdoor spaces.Materiality, Structure, and Sustainability StrategiesWORKac employs a restrained yet expressive material palette that balances durability, sustainability, and aesthetic clarity. The exterior features standing seam cladding and ACM panels, which define its crisp geometric volumes, while large glazed sections create a visual permeability between the interior and exterior. Internally, the exposed structural ceiling adds acoustic performance and raw, expressive quality to the space. From its inception, the North Boulder Library was envisioned as a sustainable civic space, initially targeting net-zero energy performance. Though some aspects were scaled back due to economic constraints following the COVID-19 pandemic, the project maintains an impressive environmental agenda:A rooftop solar array provides a substantial portion of the buildings energy.A rainwater garden with native, pollinator-friendly vegetation mitigates stormwater runoff and supports local biodiversity.Daylighting and passive cooling strategies reduce reliance on artificial lighting and mechanical systems. This approach aligns with WORKacs broader ethos of embedding sustainability into public projects without aesthetic compromise or technological spectacle.Broader Architectural Significance and ImpactThe North Boulder Library redefines libraries traditional role, transforming them into vibrant community hubs that extend beyond book-lending institutions. The design fosters an inclusive environment that engages people of all ages and backgrounds by integrating literacy programs, public gathering spaces, and interactive elements such as the Maker Kitchen and Edible Garden.North Boulder Library PlansSite Plan | WORKacGround Floor Plan | WORKacSecond Floor Plan | WORKacNorth Elevation | WORKacSouth Elevation | WORKacNorth Boulder Library Image GalleryAbout WORKacWORKac, founded by Amale Andraos and Dan Wood, is a New York-based architecture firm known for its innovative approach to public, cultural, and educational projects.
