• Getting beat by Jeff in Marvel Rivals? Skills issue, jokes his comic book co-creator
    www.polygon.com
Polygon sat down with writer Kelly Thompson earlier this week to discuss her best-selling Absolute Wonder Woman, which she co-created with artist Hayden Sherman but we couldnt help asking about another of her comics co-creations who has been making a big splash lately: Jeff the Land Shark, who appears in Marvel Rivals. We asked Thompson how she would respond to Marvel Rivals players who find themselves frustrated with Jeffs disruptive ultimate ability, Its Jeff!, in which he gobbles up all his foes in a large range and then spits them out wherever he wants. What they call annoying, Thompson replied, laughing, I call a skills issue. Before Jeff became a Marvel Rivals phenomenon, he was the team pet of Thompson and artist Daniele di Nicuolos 2018 West Coast Avengers run. After the cancellation of that series, Thompson continued to weave the little guy into her Marvel comics, and illustration partners Gurihiru fanned the flames by including references to him in their own work for Marvel Comics. Eventually, Jeff got his own adorable, digital-first silent gag comic, Its Jeff!, from Thompson and Gurihiru, and the rest is history.Polygon has previously reported on Jeffs combination of extremely cute and extremely annoying qualities for the Marvel Rivals audience. Thompsons (joking) advice for anyone frustrated by Jeff gameplay is simple:I think they should get better at the game. Sounds like a skills issue to me, if my boy is beating your ass every night. I mean, listen, he has an incredibly powerful ult; just accept it, become zen about it. Everyones got upsides and downsides, right? We also asked Thompson which of Jeffs many different cute outfits shed like to see as skins in the game, where hes already debuted with at least one direct lift from the comics. His Incognito Dolphin skin is a reference to the third issue of Its Jeff!, in which he becomes worried that he will frighten people by enjoying a swim at the beach, and gets himself a dolphin costume so that strangers will know hes friendly.Hes been a taco, hes been a sheep, hes been Grogu, hes been Wolverine, hes been everybody. Hes been Spider-Man. Thompson considered her options. I do think Im not usually super into the Venom-ification of everything, because it can really overwhelm, but he has merged with Venom in the comics [in Venom War: Its Jeff!] and he grew giant, punchy arms. So that would be fun to have in the game. And the business suit, Thompsons Absolute Wonder Woman collaborator Hayden Sherman chimed in, if we can get him in the suit with the briefcase, referring to Its Jeff! #37, where Jeff dresses up in a little business suit with his own briefcase in order to look professional at his self-created job of eating a bunch of park vendors food waste for tips, which he uses to buy a briefcase full of ice cream.Thompson immediately agreed: It was editor Sarah Brunstad who actually added the suit. She was like, I think we should add this panel with him with the suit and a briefcase. And I was like, Oh my god. Im so mad at myself for not coming up with that first. It was awesome.Whether or not Venom Jeff or Business Jeff are directions that NetEase wants to explore, one things certain: Jeff is cute no matter how he dresses.

  • Jordana Maisie Launches JMDW: A Workshop Exploring the Clean + Dirty
    design-milk.com
Jordana Maisie is no stranger to exploring the relationship between body and space. Her work over the years has ranged from designing immersive retail environments that shape the way people experience a space to large-scale public installations that challenge perception and interaction. Now, in the next evolution of her eponymous design studio, she is expanding her practice with Jordana Maisie Design Workshop (JMDW) a parallel initiative dedicated to material exploration, experimental craftsmanship, and a focus on what she calls clean and dirty spaces. The BarWhile most designers follow a linear process, Maisie embraces a cyclical approach, one where exploration, iteration, and material engagement are continuously intertwined. At JMDW, the act of thinking and making are inseparable, shares Maisie. The materials, tools, and environment provoke new ways of understanding, while the ideas themselves guide the craft. This cyclical relationship is where our process truly comes to life, transforming abstract concepts into tactile, immersive experiences.U SeatThis philosophy is central to JMDW, where Maisie explores a dual approach to design and fabrication through the lens of clean and dirty spaces. In this perspective, clean spaces are pragmatic, requiring designs that are precise, functional, and aesthetically engaging. Dirty spaces, on the other hand, are rooted in materiality and the experimentation of those materials in the goal to create bespoke furniture, lighting, and objects that blur the line between art and design. Through this dynamic approach, JMDW will produce everything from small homewares to large-scale architectural works. To kick off this new chapter, Maisie is launching two inaugural collections, The Ash and Burl Collection and The Reliance Range. The Forrest Table and The Forrest ChairsThe Ash and Burl Collection offers a more recognizable take on traditional furniture typologies, but still with unexpected details and sculptural gestures. The series balances bold geometric forms with the organic, unpredictable beauty of live wood textures, creating pieces that feel familiar in material yet distinctly fresh and modern in form. The Forrest TableThe Forrest TableThe Stack LightThe Ripper StoolThe BarThe Reliance Range is a masterclass in challenging preconceptions of how furniture should look, feel, and function pushing beyond the expected to create something entirely new. Each piece in the collection is designed for shared experiences, encouraging collective use rather than solitary seating. By redefining sitting as a communal activity, Maisie introduces interdependent designs, where every component relies on the others for structural integrity.U SeatOutside OverpassWith JMDW, Maisie is carving out a niche space where design isnt just about creating objects but about reshaping the way experience them in a profoundly contemporary way. The Reliance Range embodies this radical thinking for more explorative, communal spaces, while The Ash and Burl Collection offers a refined take that feels at home in residential interiors.Inside OverpassBench SeatArc SeatAbstract CherryFallen FruitTo learn more about the Jordana Maisie Design Workshop and its latest collections, visit jordanamaisiedesign.works.

  • hm-LI Studios Expressive Designs Are a Masterclass in Balancing Art + Utility
    design-milk.com
Wood may be one of the most ubiquitous materials in furniture design, but in the hands of Haoming Li, it becomes a limitless canvas for personal expression. In her latest trio of collections for hm-LI Studio, Li reimagines this humble material through three distinctive lenses: the precision and fluidity of bent wood construction in the Weaving Chair Series, the calligraphy-inspired elegance of the Le Sourire Chair, and the interplay of curves and grid patterns in the Curl Cabinet Series. Each piece transforms wood into a storytelling medium, showcasing how creativity can breathe new life into even the most familiar materials.Whether its a chair, stool, or cabinet, Lis designs are deeply personal, rooted in her background, heritage, or even the mundane moments of everyday life. The Weaving Chair Series, for instance, was inspired by an unexpected moment: folding and playing with a receipt while waiting in line. This idea of transforming flatness into volume became the core of the piece, Li explains. I believe that design should be approachable yet profound, allowing people to feel a sense of connection with the piece.Crafted using bent wood construction and a unique mortise-and-tenon joinery system, the Weaving Chair invites intimate interaction, as users assemble the piece themselves before use. Its design also pays homage to Lis Eastern roots, embodying the Chinese concept of (a traditional furniture structural element). Available in a variety of finishes and forms including dining chairs, benches, and stools in both adult and childrens sizes, the Weaving Chair has already won a prestigious Red Dot Award 2024 for its innovative design. The Le Sourire Chair Series also draws from Lis cultural heritage, highlighting the elegance and artistry of traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy. The chairs fluid, organic forms echo the graceful brushstrokes of calligraphy, with lines tapering into delicate ends that mimic the lift of a brush. Silk, a revered material in ancient China for its strength and refinement, also inspired the chairs folded curves, imbuing it with a sense of timeless sophistication. To achieve the seamless connection between the backrest and seat, Li utilized CNC solid wood carving technology, creating a gravity-defying floating effect that lends a lightness to the solid wood construction. The chairs are available with high backs for support, as well as lower backed or backless options that can serve as benches or side tables. Offered in a range of finishes, including the traditional Chinese lacquer, the Le Sourire Chair Series bridges past and present through its expressive form.Continuing her exploration of wood forms, Lis Curl Cabinet Series combines curved surfaces with a woven grid pattern. Designed with modularity in mind, the collection adapts to any space, offering configurations that range from expansive sideboards to compact bedside tables. Multi-directional doors enhance user interaction and provide flexible storage solutions. With its subtle curves of the door fronts and the modern grid detailing, the Curl Cabinet Series transforms into a striking focal point in any room.Through her collections, Li demonstrates that her designs are an expression of identity and experience. For me, design is not just about form; its about creating something that resonates on a personal level, she shares. I draw a lot of inspiration from my upbringing and my experiences working in both large-scale architecture and intimate furniture design. With the Weaving Chair, Le Sourire Chair, and Curl Cabinet Series, Li continues to bridge the gap between tradition and innovation, crafting pieces that invite connection and reflection while redefining what wood furniture can be.To learn about Haoming Lis latest collections, visit hm-li.com.Photography by hm-LI Studio via v2com.

Plus, it works with any Android 8.0+ device, not just Pixels, so youre not locked into Googles ecosystem. Here's everything you need to know about the Google Pixel Watch. The Pixel Watch comes with a 5ATM water resistance rating, allowing for shallow water submersion. However, Google doesnt provide an official IP rating for dust resistance, which might be something to consider if you plan on taking it into rough environments. Additionally, its AMOLED display is covered by a domed layer of Corning Gorilla Glass for better durability, but there's no raised bezel for extra protection against accidental bumps. That said, the display is smooth and highly responsive, with no noticeable lag, and its visibility is strong both indoors and outdoors. Internally, it runs on an Exynos 9110 chip paired with a Cortex M33 co-processor and 2GB of RAM. Google claims this setup helps improve heart rate tracking without draining the battery too quickly, and in practice, it does last a full dayabout 25 hours with the always-on display enabled, notes this PCMag review. On the fitness side, the Pixel Watch leans heavily into Fitbits ecosystem, tracking heart rate, sleep, and daily activity while supporting 40 workout modesCrossFit, HIIT, Pilates, yoga, etc. It also includes an ECG app for detecting atrial fibrillation and Fitbits Active Zone Minutes to help you hit recommended activity goals. If youre into data, the included six-month Fitbit Premium trial unlocks extra insights, guided workouts, and mindfulness sessions. After that, its $9.99 a month, so youll need to decide if its worth the subscription. The latest iteration of Google's wearable, the Pixel Watch 3, will introduce pulse loss detection by March. If that is something you care about, it might be worth waiting for the upgrade.

  • This Free App Helps You Make Cocktails With Ingredients You Already Have
    lifehacker.com
Some people have fully stocked barsthe rest of us make do with a rotating cast of liquors and ingredients. If that's you, Drinkable is a totally free app that tells you which cocktails you can make with the ingredients you have on hand. Even better: it works offline, perfect if you're stranded in a cabin with a well-stocked bar but no wireless signal (it happens, believe me). This application, available for iOS and Android with no ads or in-app-payments, includes a catalogue of over 150 drinks. This means you could use it to quickly look up the recipe for all of the common cocktails. To get started, install the app from Google Play or the App Store. You can start searching for recipes right away. Honestly, the application is perfectly useful just as a pocket recipe book for all the classic cocktails. To me, though, the real fun happens when you head to the Ingredients tab and start entering which things you have on hand. While browsing recipes, you'll see checkmarks next to the ingredients you have on hand. Or, if you prefer, you can filter the recipes to only see drinks you can make with your current ingredients. Tap any of them and you'll see the recipe. Credit: Justin Pot Scroll down past the list of drinks you can make with current ingredients and you'll see a list of drinks that you're one ingredient away from making. Basically, this app is built around showing you what drinks you can make with what you have on hand while also pointing out things you could make with just a few more things. I like this because it can help inform your next shopping trip without totally overwhelming you.Even if you don't want to bother with inventory management, this app is a handy referenceand it's completely free (with no in app purchases). Whether you're making a quick drink for yourself or a batch of bottled cocktails for a party, you'll have the knowledge you need.

  • $20 a month for an AI chatbot? In this economy??
    www.engadget.com
The only surprise in Amazons reveal of Alexa+ this week was the price. With inflation rampant and many more impactful subscription services to choose from, $20 per month is an absolutely bonkers price for an as-yet unproven AI chatbot.Recall that Alexa has historically not cost anything as long as you've had hardware to run it. The same goes for Google Assistant (and now the basic version of Gemini) as well as Apples Siri. Theyve always been tools to enhance hardware, not the product itself. What's stranger is that $20 per month, which I will reiterate is bonkers, is essentially fake the equivalent of an inflated MSRP. And the reason I know that is because a whole-ass subscription to Prime costs $5 a month less, and includes Alexa+. You can read this one of two ways. Amazon thinks Alexa+ is worth more on its own than the entirety of Prime. Or, the ridiculous pricing is an artificial speedbump to steer people into Amazon's ecosystem while also encouraging them to buy some Echo hardware while theyre at it. Somehow a company accused in the US and Europe of deceptively separating customers from their money hasn't tried this trick yet.In a vacuum, $20 for Alexa+ does line up with some other premium AI services OpenAIs ChatGPT Plus and the Google One Gemini Advanced plan both cost the same. And Amazon is doing something at least a little different by letting a generative AI voice assistant loose on your smart home, just as it did with the original Alexa. And I do find the option to build a library of uploaded documents within Alexa+'s memory intriguing, much as I'd prefer anyone but Amazon be the one storing that info. But despite some potentially useful features, its impossible to recommend spending that kind of money on Alexa+ now, given that Amazon predictably flubbed some demos in its presentation and hardly let any journalists at its event really test it out.I dont think Amazon is expecting a ton of sign-ups at that $20 monthly price. Besides prodding more people to sign up for Prime, this wild price for Alexa+ telegraphs a move to jack up the cost of Prime sooner than later. Its been just over two years since Amazon increased Primes price, so were certainly due for another gouging.Of course, the company will point to Primes increased value over that time, and to be fair you do get a lot your dollar at this point assuming that you want to continue spending more cash at Amazon. And Alexa+, with its built-in ability to make a grocery list and order it through Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods, slots nicely into that framework. Vanilla Alexa's propensity to order regular, non-perishable goods from Amazon sometimes without users intending it will of course carry over.My recommendation? Given the economy, just back the hell away from this entirely. There are plenty of services that are more entertaining or useful for your money. Googles Gemini Advanced plan comes with 2TB of Drive storage and a handful of other perks. Or you could sign up for Xbox Game Pass. Or blow your money on a couple video-streaming services and let the #content wash over you as we slide into the abyss. At least those options arent a portal to handing Amazon more of your hard-earned cash. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/ai/20-a-month-for-an-ai-chatbot-in-this-economy-150021310.html?src=rss

  • Skype will take its final curtain (and video) call May 5
    www.engadget.com
Microsoft is officially getting rid of Skype as of May 5 and encouraging its users to pick Teams once and for all. In its announcement, the company stated that the move will allow it to "streamline our free consumer communications offerings so we can more easily adapt to customer needs."Microsoft is also far from subtle in its push for Teams and included step-by-step instructions for migrating over. All users need to do is log in with their Skype credentials and their chats and contacts should appear. Teams and Skype users will be able to communicate with each other until the latter shuts down. Microsoft also published an entire YouTube video illustrating how to transition user data. However, anyone who doesn't want to move to Teams can choose to export all of their data and history before May 5.The news is hardly surprising given recent moves such as removing credits and phone numbers from Skype in favor of subscriptions. XDA initially reported the possibility of Skype shutting down, with a Skype for Windows code preview reading, "Starting in May, Skype will no longer be available. Continue your calls and chats in Teams." New users won't be able to access paid Skype features, while current subscribers can use credits and their plan through the end of their renewal period.Skype launched over two decades ago in 2003. Microsoft acquired Skype for $8.5 billion in 2011 right around the time myself and everyone I knew was desperately searching for a strong enough Wi-Fi connection in their home to talk with friends (yes, really tough situation here) and before video chats became the norm at work. While Skype doesn't really have much to differentiate it in a world filled with the likes of Zoom, FaceTime and, yes, Teams, it's still hard to say goodbye to a service that provided such excitement and connection. Skype felt like a new era of communication and it will be missed. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/big-tech/skype-will-take-its-final-curtain-and-video-call-may-5-144256172.html?src=rss
