  • Survey Shows How AI Is Reshaping Healthcare and Life Sciences, From Lab to Bedside
    blogs.nvidia.com
From research and discovery to patient care and administrative tasks, AI is showing transformative potential across nearly every part of healthcare and life sciences. For example, generative AI can be used to help automate repetitive, time-consuming tasks such as summarizing and creating documents and extracting and analyzing data from reports. It can also aid in drug discovery by finding new protein structures and offer assistance to patients through chatbots and AI assistants, easing the burden on clinical and administrative staff. This wide range of applications was among key insights of NVIDIAs inaugural State of AI in Healthcare and Life Sciences survey. The survey which polled more than 600 professionals across the globe from fields spanning digital healthcare, medical tools and technologies, pharmaceutical and biotech, and payers and practitioners revealed robust AI adoption in the industry, with about two-thirds of respondents saying their companies are actively using the technology.AI is also having a tangible impact on the industrys bottom line, with 81% of respondents saying AI has helped increase revenue, and 45% percent realizing these benefits in less than a year after implementation. Here are some of the key insights and use cases from the survey:83% of overall respondents agreed with the statement that AI will revolutionize healthcare and life sciences in the next three to five years73% said AI is helping to reduce operational costs58% cited data analytics as the top AI workload, with generative AI second at 54%, and large language models third at 53%59% of respondents from pharmaceutical and biotech companies cited drug discovery and development among their top AI use casesBusiness Impact of AI in Healthcare and Life SciencesThe healthcare and life sciences industry is seeing how AI can help increase annual revenue and reduce operational costs. Forty-one percent of respondents indicated that the acceleration of research and development has had a positive impact. Thirty-six percent of respondents said AI has helped create a competitive advantage. And 35% have said its helped reduce project cycles, deliver better clinical or research insights, and enhance precision and accuracy, respectively.Given the positive results across a broad range of AI use cases, it comes as no surprise that 78% of respondents said they intend to increase their budget for AI infrastructure this year. In addition, more than a third of respondents noted their investments in AI will increase by more than 10%.The survey also revealed the top three spending priorities: identifying additional AI use cases (47%), optimizing workflow and production cycles (34%) and hiring more AI experts (26%).AI Applied Across HealthcareEach industry segment in the survey had differing priorities in AI implementation. For instance, in the payers and providers industry segment, which includes health insurance companies, hospitals, clinical services and home healthcare, 48% of respondents said their top AI use case was administrative tasks and workflow optimization. For the medical tools and technologies field, 71% of respondents said their top AI use case was medical imaging and diagnostics, such as using AI to analyze MRI or CAT scans. And for digital healthcare, 54% of respondents said their top use case was clinical decision support, while 54% from the pharmaceutical and biotech fields prioritized drug discovery and development.AI use cases expected to have the most significant impact in healthcare and life sciences in the next five years include advanced medical imaging and diagnostics (51%), virtual healthcare assistants (34%) and precision medicine treatment tailored to individual patient characteristics (29%).A Growing Dose of Generative AIOverall, 54% of survey respondents said theyre using generative AI. • Rockstar acquires Aussie studio founded by L.A. Noire director
    www.polygon.com
Rockstar Games announced on March 1 its acquisition of the Sydney-based Video Games Deluxe. The studio will henceforth be known as Rockstar Australia. After working together closely over many years, we are excited to have Video Games Deluxe join the team as Rockstar Australia, Rockstar head of publishing Jennifer Kolbe said.Video Games Deluxe was founded in 2013 by Brendan McNamara, who wrote and directed L.A. Noire at his previous studio, Team Bondi. L.A. Noire was published by Rockstar in 2011, but the relationship between it and Team Bondi deteriorated following an IGN report alleging poor working conditions at the Australian studio. Despite this past unpleasantness, however, Video Games Deluxe has since worked with Rockstar over the last several years on various L.A. Noire re-releases as well as upgrades to Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy The Definitive Edition. Its been an honor to work closely with Rockstar Games this past decade, McNamara said. We are thrilled to be a part of Rockstar Games and to continue our efforts to make the best games possible.Although no information was provided as to what Rockstars new studio Down Under will be working on, its safe to assume all hands are on deck for the launch of Grand Theft Auto 6 later this year. Polygon reached out to Rockstar about its past with McNamara and Rockstar Australias role moving forward, but did not hear back before publication.

We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication.Apple has been top dog in the premium tablet space for years, and the iPad Pro with an M4 chip released last year solidified their dominance. If you've been waiting for a discount on the best-performing tablet you can get, take your pick from the available options: You can get the 11-inch wifi version for $849 (originally $999) or the cellular version for $1,049 (originally $1,999) after getting an extra $50 off at checkout. The 13-inch wifi version is $1,099 (originally $1,299) and the cellular version is $1,299 (originally $1,499). These deals bring all versions down to the lowest prices these iPad models have been since their release, according to price-tracking tools. That's a big difference for anyone looking to use their iPad for more than just navigating the web and streaming media apps. The 11-inch screen is an OLED display with a maximum brightness of 1,600 nits and a contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1, making it ideal for creators who need to see accurate colors for pictures or videos. The processing power can easily handle heavy-duty apps like Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, or Photoshop. A 120Hz refresh rate also means games will look smooth. As far as battery life, you can expect about 10 hours depending on your use, and a charge that takes about two hours to get to full. Keep in mind Apple switched to USB-C charging, and this iPad does not support wireless charging. If you don't get the cellular version, you'll be limited to wifi signal. You can get the Apple Pencil Pro and the Magic Keyboard if you want to complete the set, but of course, they're not necessary. If you're not going to be doing heavy work, the iPad Air will do just fine. But if you're looking for the best tablet to perform professional tasks, the iPad Pro M4 is at a great price right now.

  • Opera's AI 'Browser Operator' Will Complete Tasks for You
    lifehacker.com
We're now starting to see some rudimentary AI agents appear: tools that can not only write code and solve math problems, but also perform actions on your behalf. And Opera has announced the first AI agent for its browser, the aptly named Browser Operator. The idea is that Browser Operator can take care of some tedious online tasks for you, saving you time and clicks. It could arrange your next grocery order, for example, or check out hotel prices in a place you're thinking of visiting."For more than 30 years, the browser gave you access to the web, but it has never been able to get stuff done for you," says Opera's Krystian Kolondra. "Now it can."Right now the feature is in what's being labeled as a "preview" release. Opera states that none of your personal or sensitive data is sent back to the web while the AI agent is working, and says users remain in full control of the process while it's happeningyou wouldn't want an order full of the wrong groceries, after all.As is the norm with the latest wave of modern AI tools, you talk to Browser Operator using natural language: "I want to get plane tickets from New York to San Francisco at the cheapest time in August," for example. The bot then figures out what the necessary online actions are, and carries them out.If any kind of user action is required, like entering payment information or login details, Browser Operator pauses so you can take over. You can also pause the tool manually whenever you like, just in case it's booking you a hotel in the wrong city or ordering clothes that aren't your style. The feature is coming soon The Browser Operator feature doesn't seem to be live at the time of writing, but when it's available, you'll be able to launch it from the browser's Command Line interface or via the sidebar (where Aria, Opera's integrated AI, can also be found). Opera says the feature will roll out "in the near future" as part of an AI-related feature drop. The idea seems like an appealing one, in principle: Online tasks like shopping around for the best prices on gadgets or booking hotel rooms for a vacation can be tedious and take up a lot of time. If an AI bot was able to do all of the grunt work with human supervision, that would be genuinely useful. That said, it all has to work. These tasks might be time-consuming and dull, but they're jobs that also need to be done right. If Browser Operator can't follow instructions properly or keeps on making mistakes, then Opera users are going to go back to relying on their own clicking and scrolling. As I'm not able to access the feature yet, I'm relying on Opera's demo video for ideas about what it can do. The interface looks to be straightforward and intuitive, sitting to the side of the browser or just above the webpages the AI agent is working on.The example of booking tickets for a soccer match seems the most useful: You can tell the AI when you want to go, where you want to sit, how much you want to pay, and which ticket types to look for. Assuming Browser Operator understands what you mean and can navigate the necessary websites well enough, that's a lot of time saved. This new AI agent inside Opera also explains what it's doing as it goes, so you can see what it's trying to do and how successfully it's managing to carry out your instructions. It looks as though you're going to be able to jump in and interfere if Browser Operator is about to do something it shouldn't.Opera isn't the only company working on agentic AI. Last month ChatGPT introduced its own Operator tool, which can carry out tasks on the web: Like Opera Browser Operator, it's in preview' at the moment, and it's also only available to users paying for the $200-a-month Pro plan.

  • MWC 2025: Everything announced in Barcelona so far
    www.engadget.com
Mobile World Congress is taking place in Barcelona this week, offering manufacturers an opportunity to show off new gear without needing to hold their own splashy event. So far, we've learned about some new laptops and phones, as well as upcoming AI updates to Android. Here's a look at everything announced at Mobile World Congress that caught our eye. We'll update this story throughout the week.LenovoSam Rutherford for EngadgetAmong the bigger-name manufacturers, Lenovo has arguably had the busiest MWC so far. The company has revealed a whole bunch of laptops, including upgraded ThinkPads and several intriguing concept models. The ThinkPad T14s 2-in-1 has a design thats more aligned with the convertible format of the Yoga lineup than a typical ThinkPad. The 14-inch machine can be equipped with a 400-nit WUXGA touch display. Other ThinkPads are getting spec upgrades, while Lenovo claims the new ThinkPad X13 Gen 6 has one of the lightest ThinkPad designs ever. The company has a fresh slate of laptops with generative AI capabilities as well. Some of Lenovos concepts have certainly caught our attention. Its a bummer that the company doesnt currently plan to turn the Yoga Solar PC Concept into a commercial device. Thanks to the solar cells on the casing, the laptop can soak up enough energy from the sun in 20 minutes to play an hour of videos. As little as 0.3 watts of light is enough to juice up the battery. While solar-powered laptops aren't exactly new, the Yoga Solar PC feels polished. Here's hoping Lenovo does more with the notion in the future.Sam Rutherford for EngadgetIn addition, Lenovo showed off some conceptual display accessories for a ThinkBook laptop. There's an eight-inch screen that attaches to the side magnetically to help you, for instance, keep up with notifications and widgets. The Magic Bay Dual Display Concept adds a 13.3-inch panel to either side of the main display. There's also a slim second display that's designed to sit above your laptop screen and provide quick access to things like the time, weather, notifications, a focus mode timer, an AI assistant and notifications.Sam Rutherford for EngadgetOn top of all of that, Lenovo offered a look at a new prototype laptop with a flexible display. Building on the tech the company used in the ThinkBook Plus Gen 6 Rollable, the ThinkBook codename Flip AI PC Proof of concept (to give its full name) has a fold-out screen. This allows Lenovo to double the panel's size from 13 inches to 18.1 inches. The ThinkBook Rollable's display, on the other hand, can extend to 16.7 inches. Again, Lenovo doesn't currently plan to release a commercial version of this fold-out laptop, but it's an interesting idea.SamsungPhoto by Mat Smith for Engadget. The main MWC news from Samsung this year is the company's latest midrange and budget phones. The Galaxy A56 has a larger screen than its predecessor at 6.7 inches, but it's thinner too at 7.44mm vs. 8.2mm. There's now a small bump where the volume and power buttons are a tweak that we feel makes the A56 easier to handle.Samsung has switched up the camera array in the A56. On the front, there's a lower-res 12MP lens. On the other side, you'll find an upgraded 12MP ultrawide, 50MP main sensor and a 5MP macro lens. The A56 has a bunch of AI-powered camera and image editing features, such as enhanced subject detection in portrait mode and an object eraser.Pre-orders are open in the UK for the Galaxy A56, which costs $499/499. It will hit the UK on March 19, but folks in the US will have to wait until "later this year" for it.Samsung also revealed the Galaxy A36 5G and Galaxy A26 5G. Both devices have a 120Hz, 6.7-inch display with brightness of up to 1,200 nits. They also share an IP67 rating and 5,000mAh battery with the A56.However, the base models of each only have 6GB of RAM (compared with the A56's 12GB). In addition, the A36 has the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 processor instead of the Exynos 1580 that the A56 boasts, while the A26 has a Exynos 1380 chipset.XiaomiSam Rutherford for EngadgetUnfortunately, Xiaomi doesn't have plans to bring a handset it showed off at MWC to the US. That's a real pity, because no other companies are selling phones quite like the Xiaomi 15 Ultra in the country these days.Xiaomi teamed up with Leica to make a smartphone that leans heavily into photography. The camera array includes a 1-inch 50-megapixel Sony main sensor, an f/2.2 50MP ultrawide cam, a 50MP midrange lens with a 70mm focal length and a 200MP periscope array with a 100mm focal length that equates to a 4.7x optical zoom. Some preset Leica filters help to tie the two brands' knowhow together. That's not all that might be interesting to mobile snappers. Xiaomi's separate Photography kit includes an add-on camera grip with a physical shutter button, an adjustable dial and dedicated video button. You'll have the option to attach a standard 67mm filter adapter to a case as well in other words, some of the equipment you might use on a dedicated camera is compatible with the Ultra 15 as part of this setup. Moreover, the Ultra 15 has a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate and up to 3,200 nits of brightness to help you get a good look at your captures. Plus, unlike some other Chinese phones (like Huawei's), Xiaomi supports Google services in HyperOS 2, which is an Android skin. The Ultra 15 starts at about 1,499 (around $1,572).AndroidSpeaking of Android, Google announced two new AI-powered features for the operating system at MWC. The Live Video function, which Google first previewed at I/O 2024, allows you to share what your phone's camera sees with Gemini so you can ask the chatbot questions about the footage. The new screensharing function works in a similar way. You can ask Gemini questions about whatever's on your phone or tablet's display. If they work as well as advertised, these features could be a boon for accessibility. Google will first offer them to Gemini Advanced subscribers starting later this month. Those with a $20 per month Google One AI Premium membership, which is included with some Verizon plans, have access to Gemini Advanced. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/computing/laptops/mwc-2025-everything-announced-in-barcelona-so-far-185656341.html?src=rss

  • Tim Cook teases M4 MacBook Air reveal for this week
    www.engadget.com
We already suspected that Apple was planning to announce a new MacBook Air in March, and now we have it from the horses mouth. Company CEO Tim Cook took to social media to post a tease-heavy video, along with the caption this week. The video itself plays music as the text theres something in the air crawls along the screen. Finally, a tell-tale ultra-thin swoosh interrupts the text. Its incredibly likely that the swoosh is being used to represent the forthcoming M4 MacBook Air. We dont know when this week the announcement will take place, so hold tight. This week. pic.twitter.com/uXqQaGNkSk Tim Cook (@tim_cook) March 3, 2025 The M4 MacBook Air is expected to come in two sizes, 13-inch and 15-inch, according to Bloombergs Mark Gurman. Apple introduced the M3 MacBook Air last March, so a yearly refresh is certainly in order. The M4 chip, on the other hand, just came to Mac computers a few months ago. It first showed up in the iPad Pro before coming to the iMac, Mac mini and MacBook Pro in October.Could the "there's something in the air" refer to a refresh of the iPad Air? Maybe, but probably not. A new design came out back in May. The base iPad, however, is due for an update. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/computing/laptops/tim-cook-teases-m4-macbook-air-reveal-for-this-week-180949211.html?src=rss
