  • Apples M4 MacBook Air coming this week with six new features
    9to5mac.com
Apple has been having fun mixing it up with recent product launches. After teasing the iPhone 16e launch on X, now Tim Cook has shared news of another product launch in the same way. The launch is happening this week, and is widely assumed to be the M4 MacBook Air. Heres everything the new model is expected to offer.#1: M4 chipApples M4 chip may go without saying as an M4 MacBook Air feature, but its very much worth highlighting. The MacBook Air will come with the standard M4 chip, not the M4 Pro or M4 Max. But it still includes a powerful 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, and 16-core Neural Engine. The Neural Engine, in particular, is noteworthy for enabling up to 38 trillion operations per second. This is a significant improvement from the M3 model, which should make the new M4 better suited for Apple Intelligence features for years to come.#2: Improved external display supportOne shortcoming of the Apple Silicon-era MacBook Air is that its external display support has always felt a bit limited. Originally the MacBook Air could only run a single external display, then fortunately with the M3 model that got doubledbut with an important asterisk. That M3 upgrade enabled driving two external displays at the same time, but it came with a lid-closed requirement. Thus, you were still only getting two displays total since the MacBook Airs screen couldnt be used. Finally though, with the M4 MacBook Air there will be proper support for running two external displays with the lid open. This functionality came to the base M4 MacBook Pro in November, and since the two computers run the same chip, its expected for the Air too.#3: Battery life upgradesPower efficiency has been a strong theme with Apples recent chip work. The new C1 modem in the iPhone 16e brought battery improvements, and so too does the M4 chip.Last year, the M4 enabled Apple to make the iPad Pro ultra-thin without sacrificing battery life. In the fall, the M4 MacBook Pro kept its same design but gained battery thanks to the new chip. The M4 MacBook Air should follow the MacBook Pros path, gaining battery life while retaining the same basic design.#4: 16GB RAM by default, with double optionalSimilar to the previous external display limitations, RAM has at times come with controversial restrictions in the Apple Silicon era.Spurred on, no doubt, by Apple Intelligence demands, Apple will start the M4 MacBook Air at 16GB of RAMdouble what the M3 launched with. Its also expected to be configurable with up to 32GB max, higher than the 24GB available before.#5: Nano-texture displayAfter years of limiting nano-texture displays to some of its highest end products, recently Apple has started spreading the technology to a lot more devices.Currently, you can get a nano-texture display on the M4 MacBook Pro, M4 iMac, and M4 iPad Pro. Expect the M4 MacBook Air to join the line-up of nano-texture devices when it launches later this week. It wont come standard, but should be available with a roughly $150 up-charge.#6: New camera: 12MP Center StageCenter Stage is making its way into more and more Apple products. The feature enables your devices camera to follow you around when youre on a video call. It also enables the powerful Desk View feature that can be especially useful for live streamers and creators. After bringing a new 12MP Center Stage camera to both the M4 iMac and M4 MacBook Pro, Apple is expected to equip its M4 MacBook Air with the upgrade too.Whats not changing: Design or size optionsThe MacBook Air last got a big redesign when the M2 model launched. That same basic design isnt expected to change with the M4 update. There will be 13-inch and 15-inch options that look largely the same as whats available now in the M3 and M2 models.Perhaps the best we can hope for is that Apple has some fun new color options ready for the M4 MacBook Air. So far though, rumors of new colors have been non-existent.M4 MacBook Air wrap-upOverall, the M4 MacBook Air isnt a particularly big revision for Apples most popular Mac. But it does come with a variety of upgrades that keep the laptop up to speed with Apples other products. And who knows? Maybe Apple will have a surprise or two in store for the M4 upgrade too.Are you planning to buy an M4 MacBook Air? Why or why not? • iOS 18.4 beta 2 lets you choose which apps deserve Priority Notifications
    9to5mac.com
The first iOS 18.4 beta introduced a brand new Apple Intelligence feature, Priority Notifications. Now as of todays beta 2 update, Apple is giving users even more control over how the feature works. Here are the details.Apps can now be excluded from Priority Notifications to your likingIn the original version of Priority Notifications, iOS 18.4 only offered a single on-off switch for the feature.Essentially, you could turn on Priority Notifications for all apps, or none at all.Heres Apples summary of how the feature works:Apple Intelligence can show you notifications that may be important in a separate section on the Lock Screen, so you can catch up on what you may have missed. You can still swipe up to view all notifications.Basically this separate section gets more prominent placement on your Lock Screen than all other notifications, giving you a visual nudge that notifications there could really merit your attention. However, with no granular controls over which apps could be included, Priority Notifications could potentially do users a disservice by highlighting alerts that a user doesnt actually care about. But now in iOS 18.4 beta 2, you can manually disable Priority Notifications on a per-app basis.By going to Settings Notifications Prioritize Notifications, youll find toggles for every app that supports notifications. From here, a quick tap will remove an app from eligibility for being included in that high-importance Priority Notifications bubble. It will be interesting to see throughout the iOS 18.4 beta cycle if certain apps or types of apps emerge as generally not as important as Apple Intelligence thinks they are. Perhaps users choices will even feed back into Apples AI models.Do you plan to disable Priority Notifications for certain apps in iOS 18.4 beta 2? Let us know which ones in the comments below.Best iPhone accessoriesAdd 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links. • The Answer for the NYT Strands One-Year Anniversary Puzzle Is an Inside Joke
    www.cnet.com
Happy birthday to Strands! The New York Times Stands game, which is kind of like a word-find where you're not given the list of words to find, celebrated its 365th puzzle on Monday and marked its full one-year anniversary with a Strands-themed puzzle on Tuesday. (Spoilers ahead, so look away if you haven't solved today's puzzle yet.)Read more: Daily puzzle answers for Strands, Wordle, Connections, Connections: Sports Edition and the Mini CrosswordThe puzzle proudly touts "It's our game-iversary" as the puzzle theme, but players might be surprised when they discover that the theme doesn't include words like "puzzle" or "words" or "celebrate" or "anniversary." Instead, the answers, meaning the words a player has to find, are all synonyms for the word Strands.Read more: Rules explained, plus tips for the daily NYT Strands puzzlePlayers will need to find the words CURL, WISP, STRING, RIBBON, THREAD, TENDRIL and FILAMENT, plus the spangram--a word that spans from one side of the puzzle to the other--which is simply STRANDS. And of course, all those words, from curl to filament, are another way to define the game title, Strands. (I admit I did not make the connection at first and figured it was just a hair-styling theme. D'oh!)My best tips for solving StrandsI've been playing Strands almost since it launched, and I've developed some solid strategies. Here are my three favorites.Clue inTo get more clue words, see if you can tweak the words you've already found, by adding an "S" or other variants. And if you find a word like WILL, see if other letters are close enough to help you make SILL, or BILL.Hunt for related theme wordsOnce you get one theme word, look at the puzzle to see if you can spot other related words. Here's how to spell out the theme wordIf you've been given the letters for a theme word, but can't figure it out, guess three more clue words, and the puzzle will light up each letter in order, revealing the word.Toughest recent Strands puzzlesHere are some of the Strands topics I've found to be the toughest in recent weeks.#1: Dated slang, Jan. 21. Maybe you didn't even use this lingo when it was cool. Toughest word: PHAT.#2: Thar she blows! Jan.15. I guess marine biologists might ace this one. Toughest word: BALEEN or RIGHT.#3: Off the hook, Jan. 9. Similar to the Jan. 15 puzzle in that it helps to know a lot about sea creatures. Sorry, Charlie. Toughest word: BIGEYE or SKIPJACK

  • Federal Aviation Administration directed staff to locate tens of millions of dollars for a Starlink deal: sources
    www.rollingstone.com
Elon Musks satellite business Starlink may not have officially taken over Verizons $2.4 billion contract with the Federal Aviation Administration yet to upgrade the systems it uses to manage Americas airspace. However, on Friday, FAA officials ordered staff to begin finding tens of millions of dollars for a Starlink deal, according to a source with knowledge of the FAA and two people briefed on the situation. The sources note that these internal directives have mostly, if not entirely, been delivered verbally which they say is unusual for a matter like this. The source with knowledge of the FAA tells Rolling Stone that it appears as though someone does not want a paper trail. It is unclear at this moment if the Verizon contract is officially dead, or if a Starlink deal has been formally inked. The FAA and SpaceX, the Musk company that owns Starlink, did not respond to Rolling Stones request for comment.Musk, the worlds richest man, is leading Donald Trumps so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). In that role, he has overseen an unprecedented purge of the federal workforce, including at the FAA, as well as DOGEs efforts to gain access and control over sensitive information and systems.Trump and Musk recently directed the firings of hundreds of employees at the FAA, a long understaffed agency, ranging from air traffic control support staff, lawyers tasked with keeping drunk and reckless pilots out of the skies, and staffers who evaluate potential new construction hazards to inform flight paths.Musks exceedingly powerful role leading DOGE and myriad business interests present obvious and staggering potential conflicts of interests, which government contracting rules and ethics requirements are supposed to prohibit. SpaceX has benefited from billions of dollars in government contracts. And many of the government agencies he is shredding regulate his businesses. The FAA, for example, fined SpaceX last year for safety and regulatory violations. Afterward, Musk publicly demanded the agencys previous Senate-confirmed administrator, Michael Whitaker, resign; Whitaker departed the day Trump took office. The agency has also been conducting a mishap investigation into a SpaceX rocket explosion in January, which occurred days before Trump took office, that sent falling debris across the Caribbean. That hasnt stopped Musk from gutting the FAA, or from offering to help the agency. Last month, he volunteered the services of his SpaceX engineers to the FAA to help make air travel safer.Last week, Bloomberg reported that Musk recently approved a deal to ship 4,000 Starlink terminals to the FAA. Musk has claimed on his platform X that Starlink terminals are being sent at NO COST to the taxpayer on an emergency basis to restore air traffic control connectivity.According to The Washington Post, the Trump administration is considering giving Starlink a $2.4 billion contract that had already been awarded to Verizon, to upgrade the information technology systems the FAA uses to manage Americas airspace.Musk asserted last week, without evidence, that the Verizon communication system to air traffic control is breaking down very rapidly, before correcting himself to say that Verizons system is not yet operational.Have a tip for our reporters?
