• Delta Force Console Versions Delayed Out of Q1 2025
    gamingbolt.com
Team Jades Delta Force finally saw the launch of Black Hawk Down, its co-op campaign mode based on Ridley Scotts film and NovaLogics 2003 title. Theres even more to come for the first-person shooter, but console players will have to longer to get their hands on it.Previously slated for Q1 2025, game director Shadow Guo recently confirmed in a Q&A video that the Xbox and PlayStation versions need more time. The console version is shaping up nicely, but we feel that the overall user experience, especially player input, including controller balance and interaction compatibility, hasnt yet met our standards.Since the team wants to avoid an unpolished release, its spending more time fine-tuning the console build. Theres no ETA on their launch, but Guo said a console roadmap would be provided in the future. In the meantime, PC players can look forward to the addition of the Kill Cam in the next season. Select maps will also receive night versions alongside new content tailored for the same. Guo also promised more optimizations and improvements this year, with the next developer livestream to reveal additional details. For more details on Delta Force, check out our review of its early access version. You can also learn more about the Black Hawk Down campaign here.

  • Colossal BioSciences genetically engineers mouse with warm coat taken from woolly mammoths genes
    venturebeat.com
Fresh from raising $200 million, ColossalBiosciences announced it has genetically engineered the Colossal Woolly Mouse, with a warm coat taken from the genes of the extinct woolly mammoth.Dallas and Boston-based Colossal Biosciences is has engineered key mammoth-like traits into the mice so they can adapt to life in cold climates. This means the company is making strides in the scientific breakthroughs toward de-extinction, or bringing back extinct species like the woolly mammoth, thylacine and the dodo.By successfully modifying seven genes simultaneously,Colossals team created mice with dramatically altered coat color, texture, and thickness reminiscent of the woolly mammoths core phenotypes. This achievement demonstrates the feasibility of expressing traits using information learned from the computational analysisof 59 woolly, Columbian, and steppe mammoth genomes ranging from 3,500 to over 1,200,000 years old confirming these pathways as the crucial targets for mammoth de-extinction.If youre getting the vibe of the plot of Michael Crichtons novel Jurassic Park, youre not alone. In that book (and subsequent Steven Spielberg film) scientists used the DNA found in mosquitoes preserved in amber to bring back the Tyrannosaurus Rex and other dinosaurs. I mean, what could go wrong when science fiction becomes reality? Woolly mammoth image generated by Microsoft Copilot.TheColossalWoolly Mouse marks a watershed moment in our de-extinction mission, said Ben Lamm, CEO ofColossalBiosciences, in a statement. By engineering multiple cold-tolerant traits from mammoth evolutionary pathways into a living model species, weve proven our ability to recreate complex genetic combinations that took nature millions of years to create. This success brings us a step closer to our goal of bringing back the woolly mammoth.Colossals mammoth team explored a data set of 121 mammoth and elephant genomes, includingColossal-created high quality reference genomes for Asian and African elephants, to identify significant genes that impact hair and other cold-adaptation traits. The team focused on a suite of genes in which mammoths had evolved fixed differences compared to their closely related Asian elephant cousins. TheColossalscientists refined the list to include ten genes related to hair length, thickness, texture, and color as well as lipid metabolism that were compatible with expression in a mouse. The team then edited the mouse genome using a streamlined strategy that combined three editing technologies: RNP-mediated knockout, multiplex precision genome editing, and precision homology directed repair (HDR) and made eight edits simultaneously, some with editing efficiencies as high as 100%, to modify seven genes. The gene editing resulted in mice with the predicted traits from the teams computational analysis and design for specific phenotypic changes.Colossalwoolly mice all have an edit that causes loss of function in the gene Fibroblast growth factor 5, orFGF5, which alters hair growth cycles, leading to hair that can grow as much as three times longer than wild type. Similarly, loss of function ofFAM83G,FZD6, orTGM3leads toColossalwoolly mice demonstrating hair phenotypes with a woolly hair texture, wavy coats, and curled whiskers through changes to hair follicle development and structure.TheColossalwoolly mouse is a powerful system for testing hypotheses about the link between specific DNA sequences and physical traits. Mammoths have a nonfunctional version of the gene Transforming growth factor alpha, orTGFA, as well as a mutation of the keratin gene KRT27 that encodes a valine at position 191 rather than the usual methionine. Both genes are predicted to contribute to the woolly mammoth coat.Colossalwoolly mice have been engineered with both a non-functionalTGFAand a valine at position 191 of KRT27, just like the woolly mammoth, and display a wavy coat phenotype.Ben Lamm is CEO of Colossal BiosciencesColossalwoolly mice also express several engineered traits other than hair length and texture. To re-create the lighter coat colors observed in woolly mammoth mummies,Colossalwoolly mice have a modified version of the geneMC1R, which regulates melanin production, that produces mice with golden hair rather than the black/agouti wild type coat color.Colossalwoolly mice also express a truncated version of fatty acid binding protein 2, orFABP2, reflecting a similar change in mammoths.FABP2is associated with lipid metabolism and fatty acid absorption. In mice, truncated versions of this gene that are similar to that which evolved in mammoths leads to changes in body weight.TheColossalWoolly Mouse showcases our ability to use the latest genome editing tools and approaches to drive predictable phenotypes, said Beth Shapiro, chief science officer atColossal, in a statement. It is an important step toward validating our approach to resurrecting traits that have been lost to extinction and that our goal is to restore.Im incredibly proud of what our team has accomplished here in the lab in such a short period of time, said Michael Abrams, who co-leadsColossals mammoth team in a statement. Weve pushed the boundaries of genetic engineering by coordinating multiple complex trait modifications in living animals with exceptionally high efficiency. This achievement showcases both the technical expertise of our scientists and the power of our genetic engineering platform to deliver predictable phenotypes. The implications of this breakthrough extend beyond the laboratory. Not only is theColossalWoolly Mouse the first living animal engineered to express multiple cold-adapted traits using mammoth gene orthologs, but it is also a living model for studying cold-climate adaptations in mammals. Additional future analyses of theColossalWoolly mice will also improve our understanding of how multiple genes work together to manifest physical traits.TheColossalWoolly Mouse demonstrates remarkable progress weve made in precise genome engineering, including optimized delivery methods, innovative multiplexing and combinations of gene targeting strategies. said George Church, Professor of Genetics at the Wyss Institute and Harvard Medical School and Co-founder ofColossal, in a statement. We are showing that we can now rationally design and construct complex genetic adaptations, with profound implications for the future of multi-gene de-extinction and engineering.Since launching in September 2021, Colossal has raised $435 million in total funding. Colossal employs over 170 scientists and partners with labs in Boston, Dallas, and Melbourne, Australia. In addition, Colossal sponsors over 40 full time postdoctoral scholars and research programs in 16 partner labs at some of the most prestigious universities around the globe. Colossals scientific advisory board has grown to include over 95 of the top scientists working in genomics, ancient DNA, ecology, conservation, developmental biology, and paleontology. In October 2024, the Colossal Foundation was launched, a sister 501(c)(3) focused on overseeing the deployment and application of Colossal-developed science and technology innovations. The organization currently supports 48 conservation partners and their global initiatives around the world. By 2050, it is projected that over 50% of the worlds animal species may be extinct. Now around 27,000 species per year go extinct, compared to the natural rate of 10 to 100 species per year. Over the past 50 years (19702020), the average size of monitored wildlife populations has shrunk by 73%. GB DailyStay in the know! • This Google change is breaking some digital photo frames
    www.theverge.com
Google is changing the way apps can access Google Photos libraries, which is creating problems for owners of some digital photo frames. While the change is designed to make your photo library more private, its also breaking how digital photo frames such as those made by Aura and Cozyla automatically update slideshows on their devices.Aura makes cloud-connected photo frames that display digital images you or anyone youve granted access to the frame adds. While the company offers several ways to get photos onto the device, one neat feature is that you can create a Google Photos album with, say, pictures of your kids and then turn on auto-sync to automatically add any new photos in the album to your frame. So, you could share the album with Grandmas Aura frame, and shed get a constant stream of new pictures of her grandkids. However, according to Jenisse Curry, senior director of communications at Aura, on March 17th, 2025, Aura will disable its Google Photos auto-sync feature. While Grandma will still have that album on her frame, it will no longer auto-update with any new photos you add to it. Instead, youll have to manually add photos to it via the Google Photos app.Having functionality removed from a device you paid for is never nice.Aura has to do this because Google is changing its Google Photos API, a move the company announced last September that goes into effect on March 31st. Curry says Aura is getting ahead of the change to help customers transition. The change limits how apps can access your photo library and no longer allows integrated access to your entire library or the management of shared albums. Instead, apps can only access photos or albums through the new Google Photos Picker API, which requires users to manually pick each photo. We had a deeper integration with Google Photos that enabled direct access from within the Aura app and the ability to auto-sync a Google Photos album, Curry said in an interview with The Verge. That will go away because our app can no longer communicate with your cloud library.According to this Reddit thread, Cozyla has also informed its users that its Google Photos auto-sync feature is ending. The Verge reached out to Cozyla but had not heard back from them by the time of publication. If auto-sync was your favorite feature, Curry says Auras iCloud integration works in a similar way. You can select your Favorites album, for example, and then every time you heart a photo, it will show on your frame, she says. Theres also the option to turn on auto-add with native albums in your camera roll on iOS or native albums in folders on Android, she says. Still, having functionality removed from a device you paid for is never nice.Google Nest Hub devices, like this Hub Max, can also display Google Photos albums. Photo by Dan Seifert / The VergeLast month, Google announced that Google Photos slideshows would soon be available as ambient displays or screensavers on more third-party devices. The feature is currently available on Google Nest displays and Google TVs. In a blog post, Google said it was working to expand the feature to smart TVs, tablets, fridges, and digital photo frames. However, Google hasnt responded to The Verges follow-up request for more information about which devices this will be available on and how it can be enabled. Curry of Aura said that, as far as they were aware, this new function would not replace the auto-sync feature thats being removed.See More:

  • Apple refreshes the iPad, but doesnt add Apple Intelligence
    www.theverge.com
For the first time in more than two years, theres a new base-model iPad on the market. Apple just announced the 11th-generation iPad with a press release, but unlike the new products Apple has launched lately, this one doesnt come with Apple Intelligence. The new iPad comes equipped with an upgraded A16 chip, along with double the starting storage at 128GB. It starts at $349 and will be available starting March 12th in an array of colors, including blue, pink, yellow, and silver. The 10th-generation iPad, this new devices predecessor, was a somewhat confusing entrant in Apples tablet lineup. Apple launched the device in 2022 with a more modern design, a faster chip, and a bigger screen than the 9th-gen iPad, but it also cost $449 instead of the long-standing $329 base price. (Just to make things more complicated, Apple kept selling the 9th-gen model for $329 so which one was really the base iPad is hard to say.) Since then, weve gotten a new iPad Pro, a new Air, and a new Mini, which left only the base model feeling out of date. All Apple had given it was a price cut, down to $349.The iPad lineup has been confusing for a while, but as ever, the good news is that there are no bad iPads. And minor upgrade or not, the base iPad is still likely the right iPad for most people.

Premium SSD vs Ultra SSD: Azure Storage Performance for Distributed Databases 0 like March 4, 2025Share this postLast Updated on March 4, 2025 by Editorial TeamAuthor(s): Richie Bachala Originally published on Towards AI. When building distributed systems in the cloud, storage performance can make or break your applications success. In this post, well explore how different Azure disk types perform under distributed database workloads, using YugabyteDB as our distributed database. Well dive deep into benchmarking methodologies and reveal practical insights about Azure storage performance characteristics. The Azure Storage LandscapeAzure offers several managed disk types, each designed for different workloads and performance requirements. Well focus on three key offerings:Premium SSD: The traditional performance-tier offering, providing consistent performance with burstable IOPSPremium SSD v2: A newer generation offering higher performance and more flexible scalingUltra SSD: Azures highest-performance offering with configurable IOPS and throughputEach of these options presents different performance characteristics and price points, making the choice non-trivial for database workloads.Understanding Distributed Database WorkloadsBefore diving into performance numbers, its essential to understand what makes distributed database workloads unique. Unlike traditional single-node databases, distributed databases like YugabyteDB handle data differently:Write Operations:Require consensus across multiple nodesNeed to maintain consistency across replicasOften involve both WAL (Write-Ahead Log) and data file writes2. Read Operations:May contact multiple nodes depending on consistency requirementsUtilize caching at various levelsCan be affected by data localityThese characteristics mean that storage performance impacts database operations in complex ways, often not directly proportional to raw disk performance metrics.Benchmarking MethodologyTo thoroughly evaluate storage performance, we need a comprehensive testing approach. We employed two industry-standard benchmarking tools:TPC-C BenchmarkTPC-C is a database benchmark that simulates a complete order-processing environment. Its valuable because:Models real-world business operationsGenerates mixed read-write workloadsTests multiple transaction types with varying complexityProvides insights into real-world performance expectationsOur implementation focuses on the following transactions:New Order: Complex write-heavy transactionPayment: Mixed read-write transactionOrder Status: Read-only transactionDelivery: Write-heavy batch transactionStock Level: Read-heavy transactionEach of this transaction is a set of queries that are fired to carry out the business use case. For e.g. the following are the queries that are fired for New Order transactionGet records describing a warehouse, customer, & districtUpdate the districtIncrement next available order numberInsert record into Order and New-Order tablesFor 515 items, get Item record, get/update Stock recordInsert Order-Line RecordFor TPC-C, we focus primarily on NewOrder latencies as number of NewOrder transactions define the efficiency. So if the NewOrder latency is 50ms, it means it took 50ms to carry out all the queries listed above.SysbenchSysbench is a micro benchmarking workload. It creates a bunch of similar tables and the workloads are uniformly distributed across all keys of all the tables. Following are the two workloads that we use most:oltp_read_only There are 10 selects in one transaction to random tables and random keys. So if the latency of the transaction is lets say 10 ms, it means each select is taking 1 ms. And if the throughput is 100 ops/second, it means it is doing 1000 selects per second.oltp_multi_insert There are 10 inserts in one transaction to random tables and random keys. So if the latency of the transaction is lets say 50 ms, it means each insert is taking 5 ms. And if the throughput is 100 ops/second, it means it is doing 1000 inserts per second. While TPC-C provides a high-level view, Sysbench allows us to examine specific performance characteristics:Enables focused testing of individual operation typesProvides precise control over workload parametersHelps isolate storage performance impactsAllows scaling tests with different table counts and sizesWe configured Sysbench tests to examine:Point selects (read performance)Insert operations (write performance)Different data set sizes (20 and 30 tables) Sysbench git repo : https://github.com/yugabyte/sysbench/Image by AuthorAzure Disk Performance Comparison TablesTest Environment ConfigurationCluster ConfigurationBenchmark ResultsBenchmark Configuration DetailsImage by AuthorKey Findings and RecommendationsBased on our comprehensive testing, we can make several recommendations:For Read-Heavy WorkloadsPremium SSD v2 provides the best balance of performance and cost. The performance gap between Premium SSD v2 and Ultra SSD is minimal for read operations, making Ultra SSD harder to justify purely for read performance. For Write-Heavy WorkloadsUltra SSD shows its value in write-intensive scenarios, particularly with larger datasets. The consistent performance and lower latencies can justify the higher cost for write-critical applications. For Mixed WorkloadsPremium SSD v2 emerges as the most cost-effective option for most mixed workloads. The performance improvements over Premium SSD are significant, while the cost remains lower than Ultra SSD.ConclusionOur testing reveals that Azure disk performance isnt simply about raw IOPS and throughput numbers. The interaction between storage and distributed database workloads is complex, with CPU often becoming the limiting factor before storage performance is fully utilized. If the workload requires low latency, then Ultra SSD would be the best choice. If the workload requires high throughput, then Ultra SSD would also be the best choice. If the workload does not have any specific latency or throughput requirements, then Premium SSD V2 would be a good choice. Ultra SSD has the lowest latency and throughput of all three types of disks. However, it is also the most expensive. Premium SSD V2 is a good choice if you need high throughput and are on a budget. Premium SSD is a good choice if you do not have any specific latency or throughput requirements. For most distributed database deployments, Premium SSD v2 provides the sweet spot of performance and cost.Ultra SSD becomes compelling primarily for:Write-heavy workloads with strict latency requirementsLarge datasets with unpredictable access patternsMission-critical applications requiring consistent performanceWhen selecting Azure disk types for your distributed database, consider:Your workload characteristics (read/write ratio)Dataset size and growth expectationsPerformance requirements and budgetary constraintsThe actual bottlenecks in your current systemRemember that storage performance is just one piece of the puzzle. A well-designed distributed database system needs to consider network topology, CPU resources, and memory configuration alongside storage performance for optimal results.Image by authorThanks for readingx.comEdit descriptiontwitter.comJoin thousands of data leaders on the AI newsletter.
