• Trailmakers Pioneers: From Sandbox to Survival
    news.xbox.com
Trailmakers has since its conception aimed to be the ultimate sandbox vehicle builder game for adventurers. For nearly a decade, we have built a successful game with a strong community of enthusiastic and talented builders. Our players are dedicated to building and sharing cool vehicles, without any constraints or anyone to tell you what to do but we wanted to make sure that even more people were able to play our game! This presented us with an opportunity to bring the Trailmakers experience to people who dont usually play sandbox games. Our ambition with Trailmakers 2.0 Pioneers, is to reach a broader audience of players, and get our beloved vehicle builder into the hands of mainstream gamers players who would normally play games like Minecraft, Legend of Zelda and Valheim. Pioneers is a brand new, entirely free campaign, where players have to save the helpless Froggits from an invasion from the evil Botnak robot force that has come to exploit their precious planet, Gregory. The big overhaul features resource gathering, block crafting, and enhanced PvE combat. Players will experience a more epic story than has ever been told in Trailmakers before, with a 20- hour-plus campaign. To achieve the ambition of reaching the mainstream audience, we needed more gameplay and an even more engaging world, so we decided to look at the survival genre for inspiration. Merging Trailmakers with tropes from the survival genre was no small feat, and we had to spend a year in the prototyping phase to get a rough outline of what we wanted to do.The most obvious thing that we wanted was resource gathering and block crafting. We knew that it would allow for the type of open-ended gameplay that we really hoped could take Trailmakers to the next level. This implementation seems relatively simple now, but looking back it was a long and winding journey. We experimented with players being able to lose blocks from vehicles if they were destroyed, and having the player spend blocks on individual vehicles instead of having their block arsenal shared between all creations. The final implementation seems straightforward now, but we had to experiment a lot to get there. For the survival aspects of the game, we wanted to limit the players reach, and experimented with simple land grab mechanics. One of the first experiments was that you had to build power zones that could power their vehicles. Outside these zones you would only be able to drive on your limited battery power, until you ran out and had to return. This concept eventually turned into the fuel mechanic that made it into the released version of the game.Another challenge was coming up with the resources the player gathers to craft blocks. Trailmakers already has a big catalogue of blocks, so the resources needed to make sense with the materials these blocks seemed to be made of. We also had no idea how many different resource types would be good for the gameplay while still fitting with the blocks. The resource types you see in the game now are a result of many design iterations and lots of back and forth between artists and designers, to get it just right. In order to make the game play more like a survival game, we experimented with different mechanics. Early on we tried with an elaborate land-grab mechanic, where the player had to build power pylons in the world, that would create zones the player could exist freely inside. When outside the zones, the player had to rely on a limited battery to drive around. This feature evolved into the basic fuel system that players can experience in the new update. The power zones also still exist, but only around the NPC settlements. From our experience with the Airborne DLC we knew that Pioneers needed to have a compelling world and story. Originally, we wanted the planet to be populated by three different species. The Froggits on the ground, Chirpos in the Skytrees and Muldozers underground in caves. It was even intended that the player could ascend into space, late in the game, and enter the next DLCs this way. We had to scope a lot of this out to be able to focus on more essential elements. In the Airborne DLC we had also touched a little on making missions. We knew that we had to expand upon this to make an even better campaign. We decided to create a more advanced mission system that supported chained story and gameplay events that we could place in a sequence to create countless unique missions. In the Pioneers update we have only scratched the surface of what we can do with missions, and we hope to deliver even more compelling and feature rich missions and stories in the future. As the result of more than two years of experimentation and development, we feel that Trailmakers Pioneers is a shining example of how a live game can maintain a thriving community while staying relevant for new players.TrailmakersFlashbulb Games321$29.99$23.99Get it nowPC Game PassXbox Game PassTrailmakers is a play-as-you-like vehicle building game with reliable physics, controlled chaos, land, sea, and air combat.Jump straight into the open-world Pioneers campaign where you complete missions, craft blocks and fight BOTNAKs. • How WWE 2K25s Island is Breathing New Life into Wrestling Video Games
    news.xbox.com
SummaryWWE 2K25s The Island is a first of its kind, free-roam experience for the series. On the latest episode of the Official Xbox Podcast, Creative Director Lynell Jinks explained how this new feature came about.WWE 2K25 launches early access on March 7 with the Deadman Edition and The Bloodline Edition. Players around the world can jump in on release day, March 14.For decades, video games and WWE have formed an undeniable bond. Beyond being the most painless and advisable way to live out your dreams of becoming a WWE Superstar, the two have also shared a similarly passionate fan base. From the greatest wrestling game of all time (my opinion), No Mercy on Nintendo 64, to the iconic SmackDown series, developers around the world have repeatedly returned to recreate the magic of the squared circle. And now, the WWE 2K series walks down the ramp once again with WWE 2K25, launching with the Deadman Edition and WWE 2K25 Standard Edition on March 14. The folks over at 2K Games and Visual Concepts have the massive task of bringing players something fresh every year. And to be sure, with the all-new Showcase featuring The Bloodlines Dynasty, intergender matches, over 300 playable characters, improvements to fan-favorite modes like MyGM mode and so much more, theyre doing just that. But the team wanted more. A mode that would require them to step out of their comfort zone (and the ring). Enter The Island, a first-of-its-kind feature to let WWE 2K players rule beyond the ring. This brand-new online mode available on Xbox Series X|S allows you to enjoy a free-roam, WWE-inspired experience that can include up to 50 players at a time on Xbox Series X|S. To see this new feature in action, I was invited to WWE 2K25 Creator Fest, an annual event for creators and community, and spoke with some of the team behind the creation of The Island.Fans of the WWE 2K series sibling franchise, NBA 2K, may recognize the concept from The City, but on the latest episode of the Official Xbox Podcast, Lynell Jinks, Creative Director of WWE 2K25, explained how it was really a starting point from which to build but also touched on the creative dilemma this raised. Its trying to figure out how the hell we not only develop a game that people are extremely passionate about, and support all the modes that theyre accustomed to and add new match types and new stories but build an online environment with 49 of your other closest friends on [a] server [to] play matches, go through the story and progression, and unlock cool things, Jinks says.Upon starting The Island youre presented with a backstage report from WWE announcer Cathy Kelley that fans have been left reeling from an announcement made by Roman Reigns earlier in the day. Cut to the Original Tribal Chief (OTC) himself, with The Wiseman Paul Heyman ever by his side, announcing that theres a vacancy on The Island of Relevancy, a name fit for the ever-present struggle of a WWE Superstar. Heyman then goes on to drive home the true motivation for you as the player a competition like no other will soon take place. You will be thrust on to The Island and the winner will be granted a WWE contract and, of course, the respect of your OTC. And in that moment, I truly couldnt help but wonder which prize was more valuable the prospect of a life-changing WWE contract, and its seeming equivalence to gaining reverence from Roman. This entire segment felt so much like it was pulled straight from an episode of Monday Night Raw, which contributed to giving the mode the proper motivation and the necessary weight. The experience starts with crafting your MySuperstar. WWE fans know that it takes more than executing fancy moves to make a name for yourself its about the whole package, including your presentation. The greatest WWE Superstars all have notable levels of flair and aura. Its at this point that The Island almost becomes a role-playing game to me. You truly build your MySuperstar from the ground up, selecting options and moving sliders across several different categories including gender, background, archetype, body type, weight class and more. My build is a high-flying, heavyweight, social media influencer who specializes in speed named Malik Millions. With 49 other players joining you in this space, I felt that MySuperstar specs and background would not only look the part and turn heads, but be respected as I roamed across the modes districts. And then youre off, free to explore The Island. If youve ever been to WWE World at WrestleMania, think of The Island as the virtual representation of that but taken to a whole new level. In addition to other players, youll see NPC members of the WWE Universe roaming around, branded shops like Nike for you to drip-out your Superstars, pop-up shops that play on the various gimmicks of other WWE Superstars and much more. At the center of this opening location is a towering reminder of why youre competing on The Island of Relevancy a looming golden statue of OTC Roman Reigns towers over the hub as if almost to remind you that hes always watching. The locations of The Island are just as flashy as the players who roam it. Taking place across four distinct, themed districts from the neon-lit Arcade of Tomorrow to the Undertaker-inspired Deadlands. Each location brings with it unique vibes and challenges for players to explore. My time at the event was limited so I didnt get to dive into each district as deeply as I wanted, so you can bet exploring each will be near the top of my to-do list when the game releases. From a quick glance, theyll of course be welcoming players who dont keep up with WWE programming, but members of the WWE Universe will get the most out of it.[Were] trying to focus on making sure that people are having fun with their friends in this online world where its just WWE pop culture, right? Theres so much fanfare in there. Youre just like, oh, look at that Easter egg, says Jinks. And as with any great rivalry in WWE, all roads lead back to the ring. Youll compete in arenas themed after the district theyre located in and come with pre-defined match types. In Arcade of Tomorrow, an Extreme Rules match was presented where youre tasked with winning by any means necessary. Once selected, youre put into matchmaking to take on another real-life players MySuperstar.Themed arenas aside, its once I stepped in the ring for a match that it became apparent that thats where years of constant innovation and refinement pays off with WWE 2K25. From the moment I locked-up against my opponent, I was hit with new and returning aspects of gameplay. My favorite by far was chain wrestling, a visual ballet-esque dance between competitors that has become a staple of early match strategy in WWE bouts. You and your opponent compete across a series of controller inputs that require you to outwit your rival. You use the left stick to select one of a few different maneuvers and then compete against your opponent to fill up a circular meter that allows you to either execute that move or counter. Attacks turn into submission holds, which then get reversed and allow you to re-take control. It felt like the most rewarding game of rock-paper-scissors (that also happened to allow you to inflict pain on your opponent and showcase a high level of in-ring technique). Seeing MySuperstar use a cartwheel to get out of an arm wrench and seamlessly enter a hold of his own and knowing I was in control as the player the whole seemingly provided a new dimension of agency. As you progress through each match, you can continue to take your opponent to school in the way you see fit or fulfill in-match objectives that will increase the score of your match which is graded on a 5-star system. Whether its on The Island or just in exhibition matches, the gameplay feels as polished as its ever felt in any wrestling game Ive played in my 25 years of playing, dating back to WrestleMania 2000.Every emotional up and down can be experienced in one of these matches. From a triumphant comeback to a classic David vs Goliath upset, to the build up to a sick announcer table spot. When you see tiny details like a wrestler using the ropes to drag themselves off the mat to their feet, its one of countless reminders of why I love the art form of professional wrestling and why WWE 2K25 simply gets the storytelling right. Perfectly leaning on its simulation roots but allowing you to be as wild as you want to be within those bounds.Another result of The Islands inclusion in the game is that, for the first time in WWE 2K franchise history, intergender matches are allowed. I played a match in which Rhea Ripley took on her ex-lover Dominik Mysterio and got all the payback shes been due a storyline that historically wouldnt have been possible in previous games. Even small details such as the commentary adjusting were accounted for.For years the WWE 2K games have added modes and matchups to sweeten the offerings but its hard not to walk away from this event and my time with The Island feeling like this is one of the most impactful additions in a long time, if not ever. The team continually communicated the influence that this mode had on their development cycle. Its not just adding a mode. Its the time it takes to build each space, the insistence to build out the infrastructure for a stable open-roam space, the dedication to study WWE history for the hardcore fans, the level of dedication to the scripting within the mode and fleshing out the personalization and customization. Its ensuring all these pieces come together to accomplish the goal of fun that the team was laser-focused on.All of that barely scratches the surface of the time youll spend on The Island. As I was playing, it truly dawned on me that the yearly task of building a game that can live up to the expectations of WWE video game fans is a daunting yet rewarding one. However, Producer of WWE 2K25, Bryan Williams best stated what continues to drive the team. The answer is a relentlessly passionate group of developers: This is the best group of people that Ive worked withand Ive been doing this for almost 20 years. The Island is merely one of the many experiences you can expect when WWE 2K25 launches in early access on March 7 with the Deadman Edition and The Bloodline Edition, then March 14 for WWE 2K25 Standard Edition. Players who purchase the Deadman Edition on Xbox Series X|S will walk away with something even more special from the team at Visual Concepts: a dynamic background featuring The Undertaker.WWE 2K25 The Bloodline Edition2K336$129.99Pre-orderPre-order* WWE 2K25 The Bloodline Edition for up to 7-day Early Access and WWE 2K24 Standard Edition (digital) while you wait! The Bloodline Edition includes:The Bloodline Edition Bonus Pack-MyFACTION Persona Card: Mattel Elite Collection Greatest Hits Roman Reigns-MyFACTION Persona Card: Mattel Elite Series 114 Jey Uso-The Island Cosmetics (Xbox Series X|S only): Family Above All Hoodie, OTC Shirt, Yeet Tank Top + SunglassesWrestleMania 41 Pack (Available Summer 2025)**-WrestleMania 41 Arena-MyFACTION Persona Card: New playable Superstar (TBA)-MyFACTION Persona Card: WrestleMania Main Event #1 (TBA)-MyFACTION Persona Card: WrestleMania Main Event #2 (TBA)The Rock Nation of Domination Pack-MyFACTION Persona Card: The Rock (Nation of Domination) (not available for individual purchase)Ringside Pass-Season Pass -5 post-launch DLC Character Packs -SuperCharger-Superstar Mega-Boost -MyRISE Boost -100K VCDeadman Edition Bonus Pack-MyFACTION Persona Card: Undertaker 90-MyFACTION Persona Card: Mattel Elite Greatest Hits Undertaker**-Usable Urn**-Brother Love Manager-The Island Cosmetic (Xbox Series X|S only): Undertaker 95 MaskWyatt Sicks Pack-MyFACTION Persona Cards: Uncle Howdy, Dexter Lumis, Nikki Cross, Joe Gacy, Erick Rowan-The Island Cosmetics (Xbox Series X|S only): -Uncle Howdy Mask -Nikki Cross Mask15,000 VCRULE BEYOND THE RING In a franchise first, step outside the ropes and onto The Island for Xbox Series X|San immersive WWE-themed world with epic arenas, challenges, and live events. • We're Cheering on Megan Rapinoe's Latest Goal: Pottery Star
    www.elledecor.com
In her 17-year career as a superstar of U.S. women's soccer, Megan Rapinoe racked up countless goals, an Olympic gold medal, and two FIFA World Cups. But with the launch of her first tabletop collection for the Philadelphia ceramics brand Felt+Fat, Rapinoe has gone from winning cups to making themalong with porcelain bowls, plates, vases, and trays. "I wanted to do something different and creative in colors that I resonated with," Rapinoe says.Kenzie KingMegan Rapinoe dines on one of her plates for Felt+Fat at a celebration dinner at Crown Shy in New York City. At a celebration dinner held earlier this week in New York City at the restaurant Crown Shy, Rapinoe and Felt+Fat's founder Nate Mell explained how this surprising collaboration came about. She discovered the line on Instagram and had pieces at her home in Seattle. One day, she uploaded a photograph of herself to Instagram drinking coffee from a Felt+Fat mug, and Mell took note.Kenzie KingCrown Shys grilled pear and endive salad was served on a pair of porcelain trays from Rapinoes Aura collection. A former art student, he got his start designing ceramics for high-end restaurants while working as a waiter at Philadelphia's Fork. His ceramics factory in the city's Kensington neighborhood supplies tableware to chefs as well as direct to consumers. Felt+Fat had teamed up on ceramics lines with celebrities Seth Rogan and Jason Kelce. When he saw Rapinoe loved his wares, he reached out to ask if she would be interested in designing a tabletop line.Kenzie KingA plate from Rapinoes Aura collection for Felt+Fat. "I'd been using his mugs and plates in Seattle for several years," Rapinoe says. "The quality is great. I said, yes, we should do something, but I don't think either of us thought it would happen."Then last year, Rapinoe, who retired from soccer in 2023, and her fianc Sue Bird moved to New York City and worked with Elle Decor A-List interior designer Mark Grattan to design their apartment, which was on the September 2023 cover of Elle Decor. The soccer icon enjoyed the processand the resultsand realized she had caught the decor bug. "It felt like our first grown-up house," she says. "I just loved it and learned so much."In her personal style, both on the field and off the field, Rapinoe is known for her design choicesfrom the clothes she wears to her pastel hairstyles. That sense of color found its way into her home, from the violet stairwell to her sage bedroom. "We have open shelving in the kitchen and I thought: why do plain plates?" she says. "I wanted something a bit different that would fit into a house with a dynamic palette."Liz ClaymanAt home in New York City, Rapinoe makes takeout look chicer with her new tableware collection.Mell invited her to Philadelphia to experiment with glazes and colors. They came up with the Aura collection, which uses an airbrush technique to create a spray-paint effect, and is available in two color waysZephyr, a pink, blue and grey effect, and Ember, in orange, ocher, and yellow, both on a white porcelain ground. In an interview, Rapinoe down-played her decor talents ("I'm not particularly talented at design," she said with a laugh) but she didn't think her foray into homewares was completely far-fetched. "Design is an expression of something you are feeling inside," she says, "and I was definitely a player who liked to be expressive and wanted to have my own look and style. It might be a stretch but I always did wish I was an artist. Maybe I was an artist on the field, but certainly not off it. This was a way to play and act like I was one." Domenic EpiscopoRapinoe at Felt + Fats ceramics studio in Philadelphia. In between recording episodes for A Touch More: The Podcast, her podcast with Bird about women's sports and culture, Rapinoe says she loves to entertain and plans to enjoy her new collection this summer at the barbecues she hosts for friends. She uses her vases to create flower arrangements. "I do like it," she says. "I have thought about getting involved with some pottery classes."Ingrid AbramovitchExecutive Editor, ELLE DecorIngrid Abramovitch, the Executive Editor at ELLE Decor, writes about design, architecture, renovation, and lifestyle, and is the author of several books on design including Restoring a House in the City.

However, since it seems like everyone and their mother is on the vintage train lately, it gets harder and harder with each passing day to know where to find quality antique pieces at reasonable prices online. Not everyone has a great secondhand source just down the street! And if youre looking for more coveted pieces, it becomes even harder to know whos a reputable online retailer. Rather than scour the apps and websites ourselves, we figured we should go straight to the professionals to find out where are the best places to source antiques on the Internet. We asked a handful of antique collectors and vintage-loving interior designers where they score the best deals on older furnishings, and they did not hold back. Keep reading to find out where these experts like to shop online to find beautiful antique home decor.Related StoriesOlive Ateliers Courtesy of Olive AteliersCourtesy of Olive AteliersThough she admits shes biased, Kendall Knox, founder of Olive Ateliers, had to mention her own shop. We specialize in sourcing Objects with Old Souls, meaning anything a little rough around the edges, with a story to tell, Knox tells House Beautiful. The store is based in Los Angeles, but it has an online marketplace you can shop from if youre not local. It carries a vast assortment of vintage, antique (yes, there is a difference), and one-of-a-kind furnishings and decor from all over the world, priced fairly with new collections released each month. East End SalvageCourtesy of East End SalvageCourtesy of East End SalvageKnox also calls out East End Salvage as another wonderful online and in-person source for antiques. The business was founded by Robert and Kaci Lyford, a husband and wife duo based in Texas, and they specialize in European antiques and architectural salvage, such as century-old floor tiles and 16th century cupboard doors. You can visit their McKinney, Texas, location by appointment only, but they do have a booth at the Round Top Antique Show three times a year. Otherwise, youll find the most luck by shopping online. The Cotton ShedCourtesy of The Cotton ShedCourtesy of The Cotton ShedThe Cotton Shed is a family-run business based in Southwest Indiana, and Knox lists them as a great source for vintage American decor and furnishings. While they mainly travel for shows, they do keep an active Instagram account where you can purchase items they post through their direct messages. However, Knox says shopping their booth at Blue Hills at Round Top is the very best. • iPhone Fold suddenly makes a lot more sense after this new reveal
    9to5mac.com
Were still over a year away from Apples first foldable iPhone launching. But per one analysts new report, prior rumors have apparently had a key detail of the foldable wrong. Thanks to the latest reveal, the new iPhone Fold makes a lot more sense than before.Long-rumored foldable iPhone is actually becoming realIn some ways, foldable iPhone rumors remind me of the long-gestating-then-cancelled Apple Car project. For years, leakers have wrongly claimed Apple would be launching a foldable iPhone soon. But its only in the past year that those rumblings have started to carry some weight.Multiple credible sources, such as Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, Ming-Chi Kuo, and The Information, have said Apples first foldable iPhone is actually happening. And Apple is reportedly targeting a fall 2026 launch. As of last summer, however, reporting pointed to a top-down fold design.Like the flip phones of ancient times, this would allow the iPhone to be super compact when not in use, then unfold to offer a taller display. But the latest reporting has taken a big turn.iPhone will reportedly have book-style design, not top-down foldMing Chi-Kuo today posted an overview of what he expects from the 2026 foldable iPhone.Amid a variety of fascinating details, Kuo writes:The foldable iPhone will have a book-style design, featuring an approximately 7.8-inch crease-free inner display and an approximately 5.5-inch outer display. This book-style design is a departure from whats been previously thought. Kuos strength, however, is his supply chain sources. And those are the exact sorts of people who would know details like this.My early reaction, aside from surprise, has been two-fold: Ive experienced relief and excitement. Why? Because a book-style fold makes a lot more sense to me than what we expected before. One of my all-time favorite Apple devices is the iPad mini. I havent used one much in recent years, since all my work is done on the 13-inch iPad Pro. I dont want the mental overhead of managing a second iPad on top of an iPad Pro and iPhone. But a foldable iPhone with the specs Kuo mentions could be like a perfect two-in-one device. It would offer the convenience of an iPhones portability while also boasting an unfolded screen that comes awfully close to the 7.9 inch size of the old iPad minis I always loved.A device like this clearly wouldnt be Apple creating a foldable just for the sake of following a trend. A book-style foldable iPhone would offer a truly new kind of utility not present in Apples current lineup. The top-down folding iPhone didnt make much sense to me, but this new reveal has me eager to learn more about 2026s foldable debut. Are you interested in the iPhone Fold? • There's Some Serious Drama on the Moon
    futurism.com
Houston-based space company Intuitive Machines' Athena lunar lander approached its final landing spot on the Moon early Thursday morning, where it was meant to touch down autonomously near Mons Mouton, a flat-topped mountain roughly 100 miles from the south pole, at around 12:30 pm EST.But several hours later, its exact fate remains unknown. While mission control confirmed it had reached the Moon and was generating at least some solar power, pretty much everything else was sounding about as ambiguous as possible. Then, Intuitive Machines CEO Steve Altemus made a somber announcement at a press conference."We don't believe we're in the correct attitude on the surface of the Moon yet again," he said. "I don't have all the data yet to say exactly what the attitude of the vehicle is. We're collecting photos now and downlinking those. And we're going to get a picture of [NASA's] Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter camera from above and we'll confirm that over the coming days."Altemus was referring to Athena's predecessor, a spacecraft called Odyssey, which ran into serious trouble during its landing attempt last year, falling over after tripping on a rock.As a result, the lander had to be shut down after it failed to generate sufficient solar power.Japan's Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) suffered a similar fate after landing on its nose in January 2024.And it's not looking great for Athena, either. Earlier this afternoon, Altemus revealed that the company was working to save power, as CNN reports, since it wasn't generating enough on its own."Were looking at things now to determine exactly where we stand," he told employees at a watch party."The main priority right now is to get a picture of our orientation and location on the surface so that we know precisely how to move forward with the mission," Altemus added. "Where is the vehicle? Whats it look like? Where can we point the antennas? What can we do with the radios? What can we do with the science panels? I dont know yet."But there may be a silver lining. Athena was meant to deploy a suitcase-sized rover developed by another space startup, called Lunar Outpost."If its on its side again which again, hopefully doesnt happen we can deploy if its on its side, kind of leaning down," Lunar Outpost CEO Justin Cyrus told CNN. "We (can) try to drive off and just see what happens again."It's an especially busy time for lunar traffic. Over the weekend, Texas-based startup Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost successfully touched down on the lunar surface without incident. Japanese space company ispace's Hakuto-R Mission 2 is also en route, and is expected to attempt a landing on the far side of the Moon later this spring.Intuitive Machines will be hosting a news conference at 4 pm EST. We'll update this space when we hear more.Updated with comment from Intuitive Machines CEO Steve Altemus.More on lunar landers: American Spacecraft Touches Down on Moon, Sends Back PhotosShare This Article

  • The Crypto Industry Got Everything It Wanted, and Now It's in Crisis
    futurism.com
Life has never been better for the cryptocurrency industry. In its 16 short years of existence, the sector's eclipsed $3 trillion in value, wormed its way into state and federal legislation, and courted the favor of the president of the world's dominant economy. It's everything a tech grifter could want, and more. So how are crypto bros using their newfound power?Mostly to complain, it turns out.Like the MAGA pundits who still can't get over Michelle Obama, the crypto industry is full of dogs who have finally caught their car. And similar to Trump's broad-tent coalition of techno-libertarians and ultra-nationalists, the crypto industry is a fractured mess of competing interests and petty infighting. There are the ever-present grifters and speculators who see crypto only as a get-rich-quick scheme. They often butt heads with the cryptolibertarians, the true believers who hope the blockchain will usher in a golden age of capitalism. Then there are the "techtrepeneurs" the institution builders whose platforms the whole thing depends on. Though all lionize crypto in the quest for profit, their practical and ideological differences keep them at each other's throats."They all hate each other," crypto investor Nic Carter toldPolitico of the crypto industry. "But they hate outsiders more."Carter was speaking as basic crypto legislation struggles to gain serious traction in the US Senate. At the top of every crypto bro's mind is the so-called "GENIUS act," a bill meant to define and regulate the government's definition of "stablecoins,"which are digital currencies tied to real-life ones, like the US dollar. So far, industry leaders and lawmakers alike have failed to come to any consensus that would indicate a shared vision of the crypto future. Central to the debate is which faction will reap the benefits from the GENIUS act, seen as the first step in legitimizing crypto in the eyes of the law.As currently written, the bill would stop international stablecoinusers from accessing US treasury securities, a major cash cow for stablecoin issuers, and the CEOs whose bottom lines depend on international crypto trade."I'm getting a strong feeling that this toxic stablecoin legislation is negatively impacting Bitcoin price and hurting confidence in crypto," posted Chris Pavlovski, the founder of Rumble on X-formerly-Twitter. "Who's pushing this garbage?""Very troubling," responded Paolo Ardoino, the founder of Tether, the most widely traded stablecoin. "While our competitor's business model should be to build a better product and even bigger distribution network, their real intent is 'kill Tether,'" he pined, referencing crypto executives like Circle's Caroline Hill and Coinbase's Grant Rabenn, who have both lobbied congress to crack down on stablecoins used by international criminals."I personally believe that no company should be allowed to reference the US dollar without having democratic values inside of the company, inside of the US-backed stablecoin," Hill told a panel of lawmakers last year, complaining that Tether enables money laundering and terrorism throughout the globe.Though theyhave a vested interest in taking down Tether, they raise a good point. The growth of crypto has been a godsend forblood sucking hucksters throughout the world not all of them criminals. While clamping down on Tether would only enable a competitor to step into its place, this seedy side of crypto can't be overstated especially if Commerce Secretary and crypto shark Howard Lutnick expects to have any hope of building Trump's promised strategic crypto reserve.Things are also rocky on that front, to say the least. In place of a regular "crypto council" chaired by industry leaders a plan that fell apart due to infighting a broad tent of moguls and tech execs will instead meet at the first White House crypto summit tomorrow. While the promises grow grander by the minute, it'll be interesting to see if attendees can come to an actual consensus, or if the industry remains a decentralized mess.If it does, there's a threat looming over it: that Trump previously an outspoken crypto critic turned industry ally runs out of his infamously thin patience. If the industry can't succeed despite all the power in the world, he just might cut them loose.Share This Article

The Record initially reported the news, with other media outlets quickly picking it up. AP News reported that an anonymous US official confirmed the pause.Such an action would mark a major pivot in US cybersecurity strategy. Russia is considered a top cyber threat. But the Pentagon denied these reports. In a post on X, DOD Rapid Response said: TO BE CLEAR: @SecDef has neither canceled nor delayed any cyber operations directed against malicious Russian targets and there has been no stand-down order whatsoever from that priority. What can we make of this conflicting information? If we do see this kind of cessation of offensive cyber operations against Russia, what could the consequences be?Russia and Cyber PolicyQuestions about the US approach to Russian cyber threats come amidst attempts to broker a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine. For now, the Pentagon denies any pause in operations. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) chimed in to deny any change to its tracking of Russian cyber threats. The current reporting situation as it stands at the moment is that sources close to the US secretary of defense are denying all reports, says Craig Watt, threat Intelligence consultant at cybersecurity companyQuorum Cyber.Related:US Cyber Command is not the only federal agency involved in cybersecurity activities. CISA tracks and reports on cybersecurity risks. The National Security Agency also (NSA) conducts offensive operations, Jared Smith, distinguished engineer atSecurityScorecard, a cybersecurity ratings company, points out.But if a pause of US Cyber Command activity were to move forward, it could have a significant impact. If we remove this deterrent, that causes cascading effects, says Smith. CISA might lose critical intelligence that they get from these offensive operations to know what to defend against.A pause in activity could also give Russian cyber threat groups a leg up. Any planning that would halt would then allow the Russian government to potentially patch security vulnerabilities, for example. That would then leave the US Cyber Command to be in a weakened position after the planning halt was over, says Watt.NATO AlliesAny changes to US cybersecurity policy could ripple beyond its borders. A shift in how the US approaches its cyber policy in relation to Russia could have a potential impact on its NATO allies, who have made cyber pledges.Related:NATO countries in particular could interpret any potential situation involving the US Cyber Command as a strategy to get the Republican party to convince the Russian government to accept the peace deal, says Watt.Any pause of US Cyber Command activity, if it does occur, could potentially weaken NATO allies own abilities. They depend a lot on our infrastructure, says Smith. I could see there being an impact on NATO's ability, the other party states [ability] to conduct their offensive operations without the support of our USCYBERCOM.Potential Impact on Public and Private Sector OrganizationsPublic sector organizations and private sector companies are frequent targets of cyber threats. One of the functions of the US Cyber Command is to take down or dismantle networks, infrastructure, and any capabilities that are offered by Russian criminal networks, says Watt. Theoretically, any temporary relief of disruption of those capabilities of the criminal organizations [would] likely allow them to develop their attacks and almost certainly embolden their efforts against Western companies moving forward.Leaders in the public and private spheres will need to remain vigilant. Russian cyber threats will continue to be a concern, whether US Cyber Command stays the course as the Pentagon is stating or not.Related:Watt recommends intelligence sharing between public and private sector and also keeping up-to-date with industry standard recommendations for defensive strategies going forward.About the AuthorCarrie PallardyContributing ReporterCarrie Pallardy is a freelance writer and editor living in Chicago.
