Game developers get pretty short shrift on screen, mostly by not being represented at all. Filmmakers generally love to make movies about driven, uncompromising artists just like themselves, but for some reason probably either snobbery, fear, or lack of understanding they dont often choose people who make video games as subjects.On the rare occasions that they do, the devs usually fall into one of three categories: inane losers, like the stoner testers in Grandmas Boy; sinister tech bros orchestrating some society-destroying corporate nightmare, like Michael C. Hall in Gamer or Ben Mendelsohn in Ready Player One; or kinky geniuses unwittingly opening a portal to a psychosexual hellscape in arthouse fare like Existenz or Demonlover.Imagine my shock, then, when I unexpectedly stumbled across a game developer character in a movie from a quarter-century ago who is poised, grounded, cool in an understated way, admired by his peers, and also a normal adult human. I am speaking of Mr. Ota, a Japanese game creator who appears in, of all things, the classic, three-hour Taiwanese family drama Yi Yi.Yi Yi, which is a wonderful movie, is an expansive story about modern life in Taipei, centered on a computer engineer called NJ (Wu Nien-jen). After NJs mother-in-law suffers a stroke, the film variously follows his depressive wife, introverted teenage daughter, inquisitive young son, and idiot brother-in-law through some melancholy yet life-affirming ups and downs. Meanwhile, NJ suffers a midlife crisis in both his professional and romantic lives. He bumps into an old flame, stirring unexpected feelings, while at work hes tasked with chasing down a contract with Ota, a famous game designer who causes him to question his purpose in life.Ota, played by Issey Ogata, is introduced pitching NJ and his business partners in a contemplative mood. He asks why games have to be about shooting and killing, and proposes they could create something different together, something beautiful. Hes a little pretentious, like Hideo Kojima, but, in his sensible sweaters and wire-frame spectacles, hes also kind of wholesome, like Shigeru Miyamoto.NJ and Ota speak to each other in halting English. Otas soulful, philosophical musings, which sound so seductive in Ogatas soothingly deep voice, stir suppressed artistic longings in NJ. The two hit it off and go out on the town in Taipei, where Ota brings the house down at a karaoke bar with his piano-playing skills. Later, NJ visits Ota in Tokyo, where Ota reveals that he wanted to be a magician as a child, and shows off some close-up magic. (What a perfect game-dev backstory.) Hes a total dude.Hes also, admittedly, idealized. Yi Yi was written and directed by Edward Yang, a pioneer of Taiwanese New Wave cinema in the 1980s. Yang, who died in 2007, always loved film but trained as an electrical engineer. He was working in computers in Seattle when a screening of Werner Herzogs Aguirre, the Wrath of God rekindled his passion, and he decided to become a filmmaker. NJ seems like a version of Yang who never made that choice; Otas role in the drama is to symbolize the road not taken. (He even gently encourages NJ to reconnect with his old flame.) Yang consequently invests him with an aspirational level of philosophical cool and artistic purity which might come off as contrived, if Ogatas performance wasnt so disarming and deeply felt.But still a game developer as a model of artistic purity! In a movie!! A movie that was an international arthouse hit 25 years ago!!! I went to see a rep screening of Yi Yi without any knowledge of the Ota character, and was bowled over by him. I have no idea if Yang liked video games; his computing background suggests he at least had a working awareness of them, but the movie avoids going into any details. But the point is that a great artist like Yang saw no reason not to see himself an idealized version of himself, even reflected in a game creator. Thats beautiful. And so is Yi Yi.Yi Yi is now streaming on the Criterion Channel.

Im both a lifelong superhero fan and a born and bred New Yorker, which means that as this weeks Daredevil: Born Again rolled out its version of Wilson The Kingpin Fisks rise to the office of mayor of New York City, I wasnt thinking about what this would mean for Matt Murdock. Instead, I was doing mental math on how Wilson Fisks candidacy fit into New York Citys electoral processes.See, in New York, we do ranked choice voting, which might imply there were other candidates more extreme than Fisk on both ends of the spectrum. And if Staten Island voted heavily for him, as one line of dialogue suggests, he probably ran as a conservative Independent or a Republican. And if hes the 112th mayor of New York in a special election, that would imply that Eric Adams successor leaves office in an unexpected way.All I can say is: At least Marvel is letting us have someone between Adams and Fisk. I dont know if youve heard, but New York City has its own embattled mayor at the moment. Adams faces five federal charges spanning conspiracy, wire fraud, bribery, and solicitation of contribution by a foreign national or he will unless he complies with our current presidents policy goals. Recent polling shows a majority of the city thinks he should resign and less than 20% think he is trustworthy.These are the national headlines Adams is making, which can obscure many of his weirder, relatively more minor statements, actions, and scandals, much in the way that a popular TV adaptation of a comic book character can obscure many of their lesser-known stories and characteristics. Switching to permanent standard time would cost us $500,000 a year.Golf played a big role in daylight savings timeGolf has deep roots in the history of daylight saving time, which begins for most states at 2 a.m. Sunday when clocks spring forward by one hour. Many fans of Apples tablets have been eagerly awaiting these updates, especially since before this week, the companys entry-level iPad had not had a refresh since October of 2022.But if youve been waiting until this weeks reveals, hoping for a clear picture of Apples iPad offerings in order to select the one best for your needs, well, Ive got bad news: the iPad lineup remains as confusing as ever. Heres why.Not all models support Apple IntelligenceApple makes four different types of iPads: the iPad Pro, the iPad Air, the iPad, and the iPad mini. Yet despite each model getting an update within the last yearone of them still lacks the hardware to run Apples much-hyped Apple Intelligence AI platform, which debuted in October 2024. That would be the new iPadyes, the eleventh-generation tablet that Apple announced just this week. In 2025.In a baffling move, Apple decided to equip the new iPad with just 6GB of memory and the A16 chipthe CPU Apple first introduced all the way back in 2022 in the iPhone 14 Pro series and later included in the iPhone 15 series. None of these devices can run Apple Intelligence because the AI platform requires at least 8GB of memory.Its shocking that Apple decided to limit its new 2025 iPad to just 6GB of memory and the A16 instead of giving it the more advanced A17 Pro chip and 8GB of memory that can run Apple Intelligence and that the smaller iPad mini, introduced in 2024, has packed inside.Why would Apple do this? Ive reached out to the company for comment and have yet to hear back, but the most likely reason is that Apple wants to push customers into its higher-priced iPad models, like the iPad mini ($499) and iPad Air ($549), instead of having them buy the entry-level iPad ($349). Consumers are starting to go crazy for AI, and, in my opinion, Apple knows that by excluding Apple Intelligence from the entry-level iPad, many of them will instead opt to shell out another $150 to $200 more on an iPad that supports it.You cant fault a company for wanting to make more money. But the lack of Apple Intelligence support on the new iPad is going to confuse a lot of people. Some may buy it thinking it comes with Apple Intelligence since, you know, every other iPad does. This device is kind of already obsoleteat least if you ever want to use Apple Intelligence.The thinnest and lightest model..is not the one you would thinkThe lack of Apple Intelligence on Apples newest iPad isnt the only thing likely to confuse consumers. Many people are drawn to tablets because they are thin and light and thus easier to lug around than a laptop.Historically, Apples thinnest and lightest devices have all fallen under a unique moniker: Air. Theres the MacBook Airthe thinnest laptop Apple sells. Theres the (very likely) upcoming iPhone Air, which will be the thinnest iPhone ever, and of course, there is the iPad Air, which is the thinnestwait, no.You would think the iPad Air would be the thinnest iPad Apple makes, but thats not true. If you want the thinnest iPad, you actually need to buy the iPad Pro (which is 5.1 mm or 5.3mm thin, depending on screen size) and not the iPad Air (which is 6.1mm thin). But what if you want the lightest iPad? Surely, thats the iPad Air, right?No. Thats the 11-inch iPad Pro, which weighs in at 0.98 pounds. The 11-inch iPad Air is 1.01 pounds (and if you think its fair to compare apples to oranges, the iPad mini with its 8.3-inch screen comes in at just 0.65 pounds, beating the iPad Air by a long shot). Do you see how confusing this could be to the average consumer? And dont even get me started on Apple Pencil compatibility (the Apple Pencil Pro works with the smaller iPad mini from 2024, but not the larger, newer iPad Apple introduced this week).Which iPad should you get?Ive long hoped that Apple would fix its confusing iPad lineup. They didnt do it last year, or the year before, and with the new iPads this week, it looks like they arent going to do it in 2025 either.
