• Google Play Store DeletionDo Not Keep App On Your Phone
    www.forbes.com
New deletion warningNurPhoto via Getty ImagesGoogle has its finger on the delete button and thats a good thing. Twice in just a few days, security researchers have called out the speed with which Googles team removes threats from its Play Store. Yes, they should not have been there in the first place, but at least theyre now gone. But remember, you need to delete apps on your phone as well.A week ago, I reported on an extensive and sophisticated ad fraud scheme with more than 56 million downloads for 180 malicious apps. The research from IAS outed a dangerous new campaign mimicking legitimate apps in various popular categories document readers, flashlights, horoscopes. The team dubbed the attack Vapor, given its ability to 'evaporate any real functionality from apps, leaving just the intrusive ads.Users really do need to kill the habit of downloading these vacuous apps from little known developers. Googles Play Store purge last year, its raised thresholds and new app quality warnings will all help. But ultimately it needs a change in user behavior. Now Zscalers Threatlabz has outed another vacuous app doing significant harm and no good. A popular application in the Google Play Store, it says, with over 220,000 downloads that was actually a downloader for the Anatsa (aka TeaBot) Android banking trojan. The app was disguised as a file manager and document reader.I covered Anatsa almost exactly a year ago, when ThreatFabric warned the dropper was specifically targeting Samsung. The malicious AccessibilityService was tailored to interact with the UI elements of Samsung devices This suggests that the threat actors initially developed and tested their code exclusively for Samsung devices. At the time, the researchers warned there is potential for future adaptations to target other manufacturers, with other droppers that did not contain such manufacturer-specific code, posing a threat to all devices regardless of the vendor. That paints a good picture as to how calculating these attacks can be. And Anatsa is particularly nasty. As Zimperium explains, TeaBot is an Android banking trojan targeting the largest number of mobile financial institutions with more standard features. Once on a victims device, the trojan checks which applications are installed, and once a targeted banking app is discovered, it downloads a payload specifically for that app. TeaBot typically spreads through malicious apps or phishing campaigns.Suffice to say, its disappointing this is still tricking its way onto Play Store. Check for the app and delete it now if youre one of those 200,000 impacted users. And please be mindful of the apps you install, especially in these catnip categories. Also ensure Play Protect is enabled on your phone. Each time Google removes an app, it updates its defenses to ensure the specific threat cant be deployed again. Clearly those developing malware adapt their code to slip through the net, and thats what drives this endless game of cat and mouse with Google.

  • Metas censored Facebook for China sounds like a privacy nightmare
    www.digitaltrends.com
The Chinese internet and social media ecosystem is a heavily censored pool, one that aggressively bans and removes any content that is deemed unaligned to the government policies. One of the reasons why Western social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram could never make an inroad in the market is due to that extensive censorship and local data regulation laws.Meta, however, was reportedly eager to enter the Chinese market and with such eagerness that it was willing to share user data with the Chinese government and create a complex censorship filter, as well. The revelations come as part of a complaint filed by a Meta whistleblower, which contained internal documents and communication viewed by The Washington Post.Recommended VideosFiled before the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) by former Director of Public Policy at Facebook, Sarah Wynn-Williams, the 78-page complaint that the social media juggernaut created a China-favoring censorship system in China in hopes of launching Facebook in the country. Please enable Javascript to view this contentBrett Johnson / UnsplashAccording to The Post, the Mark Zuckerberg-led company also planned to install a chief editor who would decide what content to remove and could shut down the entire site during times of social unrest. The company is claimed to have created a dedicated team for its planned China operations as part of an internal project codenamed Aldrin. But more than just creating a censorship system, Meta also was reportedly willing to stifle dissent against the government. Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg also agreed to crack down on the account of a high-profile Chinese dissident living in the United States following pressure from a high-ranking Chinese official the company hoped would help them enter China, says the report citing the complaint.Furthermore, the company was even willing to loosen its privacy rules and grant the Chinese government access to data covering China as well as Hong Kong-based users. The plans kicked into motion in 2014, but were ultimately abandoned in 2019 when diplomatic relations between the US and China were strained.Meta wont be the only player with such ambitions. Back in 2018, Google was reportedly working on a heavily censored version of Search under the codename Project Dragonfly, but the plans were ultimately put on cold ice. As of 2025, AI is the new tech hunting ground, and the spectre of Chinese censorship is clearly visible on products such as the DeepSeek open-source AI model.Editors Recommendations

  • This laptop concept features a rollable screen that expands horizontally
    www.digitaltrends.com
Compal Electronics has introduced the Infinite Laptop, a concept device featuring a display that expands horizontally from 14-inches to 18-inches. Unlike most expandable display concepts, which extend vertically, Compals design increases screen width, offering a wider aspect ratio that could benefit multitasking, content creation, and entertainment. The mechanism extends from both sides, ensuring structural balance and durability when fully deployed. The laptop also features LED arrays on the lid, which can display notifications such as emails or system alerts. While not essential, this addition provides quick, glanceable updates without opening the device.Compal ElectronicsCompal is not the first to experiment with expandable laptop screens. Lenovo has introduced similar concepts, including the ThinkBook Plus Rollable and the recently showcased ThinkBook Flip, both of which explore different methods of increasing screen real estate while maintaining portability. Lenovos designs have focused on adding secondary or folding displays, whereas Compals Infinite Laptop aims for a seamless, side-expanding approach.Compal ElectronicsNotably, Compal has already won an IF Design Award for their innovation, suggesting that consumers can expect the concept to soon turn into reality. As an Original Design Manufacturer (ODM), Compal primarily develops prototypes rather than selling products under its own brand. The Infinite Laptop, like many of Compals past concepts, may serve as a reference design for major brands like Dell, HP, or Lenovo, who could refine and bring it to market. The company hasnt shared any technical details, but it seems pretty obvious that the extending display will make use of a rollable OLED panel.Recommended VideosWhile it is uncertain whether this particular design will see mass production, expandable displays are becoming an area of interest in the laptop industry. As manufacturers explore new ways to enhance productivity without compromising portability, concepts like the Infinite Laptop could shape the future of laptop design, particularly for users who need larger workspaces on demand without carrying multiple devices.Editors Recommendations

Emmett Shear was Twitch's CEO from 2011 to 2023.He was also OpenAI's interim CEO for three days in November 2023 when Sam Altman was fired.Shear shared the career advice he used to give to his interns at Twitch in a thread on X.Emmett Shear, the former CEO of streaming platform Twitch, said he had a piece of career advice that he gave every batch of interns at the company. In a thread on X on Saturday, Shear said that he'd give each intern batch a presentation on Twitch's origins, followed by a Q&A session. He said one question he was always asked during Q&A was: "Where should I work and what job should I get, or should I start a company?" The answer varies from person to person, Shear said. He outlined his advice and the thought process behind it in his X thread. People pursue careers for different reasons, such as money, prestige, power, and advancement opportunities, Shear wrote. But there were downsides to each of these reasons, he added.Money is a top reason, Shear wrote, but has "diminishing returns."Prestige, meanwhile, is "mostly a trap, for the same reason designer clothing brands are bad deals," Shear said. While a prestigious job "might make some less discerning people think better of you," it will not "actually make you better or better off," he said.Shear added that jobs promising power only offer you "borrowed power," especially if one has just begun their career."So if they're pitching you on power it's usually a trick of some kind. They're trying to convince you to accept less compensation in other ways by offering a mirage," Shear added.Shear said some people may be attracted to "tracked jobs" that offer advancement opportunities, like becoming partners at a law firm. Such jobs may work for people who enjoy competing with their peers. On the other hand, people could pick careers based on the work itself, Shear said. Work can be "intrinsically rewarding" when one learns and grows at their job and that growth makes workers "more valuable in the future," Shear said.Ultimately, choosing one's career path comes down to knowing yourself, Shear said."But in general it seems clear ppl should satisfice for cash, optimize for learning/growth, and ignore everything else," Shear wrote."If you love economy-sized pain and feel like you have no other option, consider starting something. But don't say I didn't warn you about the suck," he added.Shear did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.Shear served as Twitch's CEO from 2011 to 2023 and is a prolific user of X. In addition to dispensing advice on careers and running start-ups, Shear has commented on topics ranging from his experience interning at Microsoft to whether a CEO's job can be automated. When OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman was fired in November 2023, Shear was named interim CEO of the ChatGPT maker. His tenure lasted less than 72 hours. Altman was reinstated as CEO after several days of chaos at OpenAI."I am deeply pleased by this result, after ~72 very intense hours of work. Coming into OpenAI, I wasn't sure what the right path would be. This was the pathway that maximized safety alongside doing right by all stakeholders involved," Shear wrote in an X post in November 2023. "I'm glad to have been a part of the solution."

Starting this fall, schools in Beijing must provide at least eight hours of AI instruction.AI education will be mandatory for students from elementary school through high school. The move comes as China powers ahead in the AI race.China's capital, Beijing, is making AI education compulsory for students including elementary schoolers.Starting this fall, schools in the city must provide at least eight hours of AI instruction per academic year, the Beijing Municipal Education Commission said in a statement on Friday. Schools can teach AI as a stand-alone course or integrate it into existing courses like science and information technology.Under the new plan, elementary schoolers, typically ages six to twelve, would take hands-on courses to kick-start their understanding of AI. Those in middle school would learn how to apply AI in schoolwork and daily life, while high schoolersIn China, compulsory education consists of six years of elementary school, three years of middle school, and three years of high school. The commission said the initiative is meant to create a "teacher-student-machine" learning model and integrate AI ethics.Beijing isn't alone in pushing for AI education in schools. Last year, California passed a law requiring its education board to consider AI literacy in school curricula. Reuters reported in September that Italy would begin testing AI-powered tools in 15 classrooms as part of a broader effort to enhance students' digital skills.China pushes on in the AI raceBeijing's decision to make AI education mandatory comes as China powers ahead in the AI race, with its homegrown startups gaining global attention.Earlier this year, AI startup DeepSeek made headlines after unveiling a low-cost reasoning model that shook up the AI industry and the US stock market. The company said its model rivals top competitors, like ChatGPT's o1, at a fraction of the cost.Last week, Alibaba's stock surged 8% over two days after the company launched its latest open-sourced AI model, which it said used less data than its rival DeepSeek.Other Chinese AI stocks, including Tencent, have also seen gains amid excitement for newly announced technology, while top US-based AI stocks, like Nvidia, have faced losses.

The intervention is located on Rua Joo da Rosa, within building no. 1, a structure originally part of a group of five buildings constructed in the early 20th century to house fish canning factories. These factories were strategically placed on the outskirts of the urban core, in a spacious area with convenient access to the railway line, catering to the growing demands of the canning industry, particularly during the two World Wars. Over time, as industrial activity intensified, worker housing emerged in the vicinity, gradually transforming the surrounding area into a residential neighborhood. Following the decline of the canning industry in the 1970s, four of the original buildings were demolished and replaced with residential structures.Save this picture!Save this picture! At the site of the remaining factory, we were tasked with designing a residence. In light of the original building's robust construction and the significance of preserving its historical memory, we chose to retain the entire perimeter and volumetric envelope, integrating the domestic program within the existing industrial framework. On the northern side, the faade was carefully preserved, maintaining its characteristic stone-framed openings. New window frames were installed, and a yellow pigment was introduced to highlight the transformation of the building's function.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Inside, a new architectural volume was developed, drawing on the gabled form of the original industrial structure. Spatial interventions included strategic subtractions to form two distinct courtyards that enhance the dwelling's functionality and spatial quality. The entry courtyard acts as a transitional space between the public sidewalk and the private domain, serving as an antechamber that mediates the relationship between exterior and interior while promoting cross ventilation and natural lighting. The service area, including the maid's quarters and kitchen, is situated on the left side of the property for convenience, and it is designed to connect with both the old and new houses. Today, we are going to implement a skill tree UI widget. Here we will be referencing the skill tree system in horizon forbidden west game. We will define the skills data in a data table and based on the data in data table, skill tree will be dynamically generated in the game. Data table will contain all the data about a particular skill such as name, icon, dependencies, level,.. etc. Later on, this skill tree will be integrated with the actual gameplay we are working on. But it is not necessary for you to have watched previous episodes of this series to understand how the skill tree UI is implemented.
