Trump signed an executive order seeking to limit Public Service Loan Forgiveness eligibility. The Education Department said on Monday that the program "is not changing today."The order asked the department to ensure the definition of "public service" aligns with the administration's views.President Donald Trump's Department of Education is assuring student-loan borrowers that changes to a key forgiveness program aren't here yet. After Trump signed an executive order on Friday aimed at the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, the Federal Student Aid office posted on X that borrowers enrolled in the program won't be facing any changes at this point."The U.S. Department of Education is reviewing the recent executive order regarding the Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program," FSA wrote. "The PSLF Program is not changing today, and borrowers do not need to take any action."Trump's executive order said that organizations engaging in "activities that advance illegal immigration, terrorism, child abuse, discrimination, and public disruptions" would not be eligible for the program. While it's unclear which specific organizations Trump is seeking to target that do not align with his administration's political views, the executive order directed the education and treasury secretaries to redefine what constitutes "public service" and ensure that participating PSLF employers align with the administration.PSLF was created in 2007 to forgive student debt for government and nonprofit workers, like teachers and police officers, after 10 years of qualifying payments. Trump cannot make major changes to the program without Congress's approval. Some borrower advocates said that any attempt to change the program solely by executive order would result in legal challenges."Threatening to punish hardworking Americans for their employers' perceived political views is about as flagrant a violation of the First Amendment as you can imagine," Aaron Ament, the president of the borrower protection group Student Defense, said. "If the Trump Administration follows through on this threat, they can plan to see us in court."Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, similarly said in a statement that the federation "won't stop fighting, in court and in Congress, until every single public service worker gets the help the law affords them."Education Secretary Linda McMahon said during her confirmation hearing that she would honor PSLF and that "if we want stronger or more programs for loan forgiveness, then I think Congress should pass those programs, and then we would implement it."This is Trump's latest blow to federal workers. Over the past weeks, his administration has worked with Elon Musk and the White House's DOGE office, aimed at reducing government waste, to slash the federal workforce. The administration has fired thousands of federal workers across agencies and cut billions of dollars in federal programs, including the Department of Education's research arm. Some Republican lawmakers lauded Trump's executive order. Rep. Tim Walberg, chair of the House education committee, said in a statement that Republicans "have long had concerns about the open-ended nature of PSLF."The executive order "is in line with House Republican's goal of delivering the reforms to PSLF that are sorely needed," Walberg said. Are you enrolled in the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program? The CEO of United Airlines took to LinkedIn to suggest ways to improve air traffic control. He called for more funding for staffing, technology, and facilities. His post followed tensions between Elon Musk and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.United Airlines' CEO has suggested three ways to fix the air traffic control system and cut delays for passengers. In a 750-word LinkedIn post on Monday, Scott Kirby said that improving the Federal Aviation Administration is "the most important change the government can make for the American traveling public."He added that air traffic control restrictions were responsible for 68% of delays at United, the world's biggest airline.Kirby said air travel could be "dramatically" improved by investing in staffing, technology, and facilities. He pointed to statistics that more than three-quarters of critical air traffic control facilities are understaffed and called on the FAA to increase capacity at its academy plus expand the option of training at private colleges and universities.Air traffic control safety has been in the spotlight in recent months, following a string of major incidents, most notably a crash between a US Air Force helicopter and an American Airlines plane in Washington, DC in January, which killed more than 60 people.Kirby's post came three days after The New York Times reported on an argument between Elon Musk and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy about ATC staffing.Musk denied Duffy's claim that the Department of Government Efficiency had asked him to fire air traffic controllers, the Times reported. In Monday's post, Kirby praised Duffy's plan to "supercharge" hiring air traffic controllers by accelerating the process and boosting pay.Modern tech and long-term thinkingThe United chief executive also suggested that ATC systems need to be upgraded with new technology. He referenced a 2024 report that said some systems can't be maintained because their parts are no longer manufactured or key technicians have retired."Canada started using electronic flight strips 25 years ago, while we have been unsuccessfully trying to replace our antiquated paper strips at towers since 1983," Kirby wrote.Lastly, he said that the FAA spends over 90% of its facilities and equipment budget on repairs calling for that proportion to instead be spent on upgrades and modernization.Kirby said it "makes no sense" that FAA funding is designated year-to-year. He wants its facilities-and-equipment account to instead be designated as mandatory spending to provide long-term stability."To be clear, our ATC system is safe," he concluded. "But now is the time to give the greatest country in the world what its citizens deserve the best air traffic control system in the world."

  • The Supreme Court just handed down some ominous news for LBGTQ youth
    www.vox.com
The Supreme Court announced on Monday that it will hear Chiles v. Salazar, a challenge to a Colorado law preventing most mental health professionals from offering conversion therapy a discredited method of counseling that attempts to turn LGBTQ patients cisgender and heterosexual (or at least make patients act that way) to people under age 18.The Colorado law at issue in Chiles prohibits licensed therapists from engaging in any practice or treatment that attempts or purports to change an individuals sexual orientation or gender identity, and it includes an exemption for counselors engaged in the practice of religious ministry.According to a 2023 dissent by Justice Samuel Alito, 20 states plus the District of Columbia have laws restricting conversion therapy. As a federal appeals court that upheld Washington States law targeting this practice explained, every major medical, psychiatric, psychological, and professional mental health organization opposes the use of conversion therapy. The American Psychological Association, for example, says that conversion therapy puts individuals at a significant risk of harm and is not effective in changing a persons gender identity or sexual orientation. The Chiles case raises difficult questions under the First Amendment (if you want to read a deeper dive into these questions, I explore them here). In short, however, the central question is whether a restriction on what people can talk about with their therapist violates constitutional free speech protections. The First Amendment, as many states with conversion therapy laws have argued, historically has not been understood to protect malpractice or similar misconduct by licensed professionals, even if that misconduct only involves speech. A lawyer cannot tell their client nothing will happen to you if you go rob a bank without risking professional sanction. Nor can a physician cite the First Amendment to avoid a murder trial if they tell a patient to go drink a jug of arsenic.Much of the case will likely rest on the Courts decision in NIFLA v. Becerra (2018), which provides ammunition to both sides of the Chiles case. NIFLA held that speech is not unprotected merely because it is uttered by professionals, so thats certainly helpful language for proponents of conversion therapy. But NIFLA also said that [s]tates may regulate professional conduct, even though that conduct incidentally involves speech, and it added that regulations of professional malpractice fall within the traditional purview of state regulation of professional conduct. Its always a little dangerous to predict how the Supreme Court may decide a particular case, but this Supreme Court has a 6-3 Republican majority, and it has not been a strong defender of LGBTQ youth. Last December, the Court heard oral arguments in a case asking if states may ban many medical treatments for transgender people under the age of 18, and the Courts Republicans appeared eager to uphold these bans.Should the Court strike down Colorados law, it will need to wrestle with how to do so without eviscerating every states ability to sanction malpractice. If a state cannot prevent licensed therapists from engaging in controversial practices that are rejected by all of the relevant professional organizations, why can it sanction doctors who promote quack treatments for Covid-19? Or who spread false information about vaccines to their patients?Colorados best shot at defending its law, in other words, is likely to point to the intolerable consequences of stripping states of their ability to sanction malpractice, at least when that malpractice results from a conversation between a patient and a client. But it is far from clear whether this Supreme Court will care about those consequences.See More:

Solid Snake is back in Death Stranding 2 but not as you remember himAdam StarkeyPublished March 10, 2025 4:30pmUpdated March 10, 2025 4:30pm Solid Neil doesnt quite have the same ring to it (Sony Interactive Entertainment)Death Stranding 2: On The Beach has a new trailer featuring a legally distinct Solid Snake and confirmation of the games release date.Aside from Ghost Of Ytei, the only other major PlayStation 5 exclusive confirmed for this year is Hideo Kojimas Death Stranding 2: On The Beach.Weve seen several predictably perplexing trailers for the sequel already, but a new one arrived during a panel at SXSW on Sunday, which confirmed the game will be released on June 26, 2025.The lengthy 10-minute trailer features sweeping vistas, bizarre creatures and a stronger emphasis on gunplay, but one new character has captured everyones attention because he looks identical to Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid. If youre unaware, Kojima is known for creating the Metal Gear franchise for Konami, but he departed the company in not-so amicable fashion in 2015. His studio, Kojima Productions, went independent and partnered with Sony to work on 2019s Death Stranding.Despite being Kojimas baby, the Metal Gear IP is still owned by Konami, with a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater set to be released in August. Kojima clearly hasnt moved on entirely though, as hes already known to be working on a spiritual sequel of sorts for PlayStation 5.Before that, hes added a new character called Neil into Death Stranding 2, who, towards the end of the trailer, rocks a bandana and has a very clear resemblance to Snake from the Metal Gear franchise. Legally distinct Snake may not be so good (Sony Interactive Entertainment)While you might think any gruff man with brown hair and a headband could resemble Snake in some capacity, this nod is clearly intentional due to the choice of actor, Luca Marinelli. Back in July 2020 on Instagram, Kojima named the Italian actor as someone who would be the spitting image of Solid Snake if he donned a bandana. In another interesting twist, it appears as if Neil is some sort of antagonist in Death Stranding 2, who represents a distinctly American philosophy at least, based on the voiceover. Solid Snakes design was largely modelled after American action movie heroes so it all lines up.There appears to be other Metal Gear nods in the trailer too, with a giant mech that looks very similar to REX from the original Metal Gear Solid.I love how unapologetic Kojima is for including Solid Snake even without having the rights at all, absolute legend, reads one comment on YouTube.More TrendingThey cant copyright a guy wearing a bandana, added another. As for the rest of the cast, Norman Reedus is back as Sam Bridges, alongside La Seydoux and Troy Baker as Fragile and Higgs, respectively. New additions include Elle Fanning, Shioli Kutsuna, and the likeness of Mad Max director George Miller.Beyond the game itself, Kojima announced a worldwide concert tour to celebrate the music of Death Stranding. This orchestral tour starts on November 8, 2025 at the Sydney Opera House in Australia, before it hits London on November 16 at the Eventim Apollo, and other major cities. • Lego celebrate Mario Day with an amazing new Mario Kart set
    metro.co.uk
Mamma mia! Thats a awesome Lego model (Lego)As far as Nintendo is concerned its a quiet Mario Day this year but Lego has a new set out that may even give a hint as to Mario Kart 9s release date.Like every big franchise worth its salt there is a Mario Day, just as there is a Pokmon Day, Star Wars Day, Alien Day, Mass Effect Day and no doubt many others we are blissfully unaware of.Today is Mario Day because its MAR 10, which started off as more of a grassroots celebration before Nintendo made it official. They dont usually do much on the day though, and normally just leave it for other companies to announce new merch. This years festivities are particularly muted, no doubt because of the imminent release of the Nintendo Switch 2 with no more information expected until April 2. Nevertheless, Mario Day has provided one new Mario-related product to look forward to, in the form of this incredible new Lego Mario Kart set.Lego has been making Super Mario themed sets for almost five years now, but the majority are aimed primarily at kids, encouraging them to build their own Mario courses and interacting with them via a range of Bluetooth-imbued minifigures.Theyre very good but as well as those Lego has also produced more complex sets aimed at adult fans, including a brick-built NES console, an animated Super Mario World homage, a Piranha Plant (one of the cheaper sets), and a giant articulated Bowser.Theres usually two or three of these released every year and this new one is well, you can see exactly what it is, because its a remarkably clever recreation of Mario sitting in his rather mundanely named standard kart.https://www.instagram.com/p/DHBUNfTpjRk/Unliked the Bluetooth minifigure Mario Kart sets aimed at kids, this one is made up of 1,972 pieces and stands 22cm tall. The Mario figure has a poseable head and arms and sits atop a brick-built stand.Everyone knows Lego isnt cheap but the 139.99 price tag on this one seems slightly less than you might expect, given how good it looks. The set is already available for pre-order but wont be released until May 15. Lego is often announced months before it comes out, especially with big adult-orientated sets like this, but it seems perfectly reasonable to wonder how close thats going to be to the Nintendo Switch 2 launch.A new Mario Kart is the only game so far announced for the new console and rumours suggest it will be released somewhere around June but no source has suggested a specific date yet, so it could easily be May or July too. That moustache is looking very proud (Lego)Its certainly hard to put the sets theme down to a coincidence, which suggests that Lego probably has a good idea of Nintendos plans so itll be interesting to see if they have another topical set for adults later in the year.Theyve already hinted at a brick-built Game Boy, so if there are more sets they wont necessarily be Mario-related. Especially as Lego has already produced family friendly Animal Crossing sets and a Legend Of Zelda model aimed at adults.More TrendingFor now, theres very little else of interest going on during Mario Day. Lego has a general promotion for all their sets, which gives you double Insider Points if you buy them before the end of tomorrow, and Nintendo itself also has a minor sale on at the moment. The time-limited sale focuses on Mario related games, with the excellent Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Luigis Mansion 3, amongst others, down to 33.29.Theres also a new Super Mario Bros. alarm theme for the Alarmo clock (which you no longer need to be a Nintendo Switch Online member to buy) and a musical Mario montage on Nintendo Music (which does need a subscription).Given the proximity of the April Nintendo Direct it was probably wrong to expect anything more, but hopefully that will be worth the wait. This is going to end up on a lot of birthday and Christmas lists (Lego)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. To submit Inbox letters and Readers Features more easily, without the need to send an email, just use ourSubmit Stuff page here. For more stories like this, check our Gaming page.ArrowMORE: Wanderstop review the ultimate cosy gameGameCentralSign up for exclusive analysis, latest releases, and bonus community content. This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply. • Lawmakers Demand Answers From Rubio Over the $400 Million Armored Tesla Contract
    gizmodo.com
By Matthew Gault Published March 10, 2025 | Comments (2) | Tesla co-founder and CEO Elon Musk stands in front of the shattered windows of the newly unveiled all-electric battery-powered Teslas Cybertruck Photo: Frederic J. Brown Politicians are pressing Secretary of State Marco Rubio to answer questions about a government contract for armored Teslas that never existed. Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-NY) and Congressman Gregory Meeks (D-NY) both sent letters to Rubio last week with a detailed list of questions they want the Secretary to answer. The letters concern a Biden-era State Department contract for armored Teslas that, if fulfilled, would have enriched the Elon Musk-owned company to the tune of $400 million. The decision to consider purchasing Tesla vehicles for this purpose highlights the obvious conflicts of interest inherent in Mr. Musks dual roles as the Chief Executive Officer of Tesla, Inc. and the practical head of the Department of Government Efficiency, Blumenthalss letter said. Blumenthal is a member of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs and the chairman of its Investigations subcommittee. His letter is dated March 3 and hes demanding answers from Rubio by today. Meeks is a ranking member of the Houses Committee on Foreign Affairs. He sent his letter on March 7 and is demanding his answers no later than March 14. We write to you to request answers and documentation to respond to a series of media reports that the Department of State and Elon Musk intended to engage in unlawful procurement activities that would constitute a serious violation of federal procurement laws, and in doing so planned to unlawfully enrich Mr. Musk, Meeks said in his letter. The saga of the armored Teslas began last month when Drop Site News uncovered a line item in a procurement forecast that called for spending $400 million on armoring Teslas. This document is not a budget, its a forecast put together by State that talks about money they might spend in the future. When D.C. decides to spend money, it can take a long time. First, it puts out a Request for Information (RFI), a signal to contractors about what it wants. Then, it looks through the RFIs and, after a lengthy decision-making process, decides whether to spend the money. Theres a 2024 RFI about armoring electric vehicles here. When I talked to the State Department about this story, they told me that the use of the word Tesla had been a clerical error and said that it was a Biden-era initiative that wasnt moving forward. Theyd put out the RFI, they said, and only got one response back.Someone at State also went back to the original procurement document and changed the word Tesla to electric vehicle. In the journalism business, we call this a stealth edit, and it tends to make you look guilty. The armored Teslas saga continued to blow up. At the end of February, NPR reported that it had documents that undercut States denials. NPR didnt share these documents or directly quote them. According to its reporting, Bidens State Department planned to spend about $483,000 in 2025 buying light-duty EVs. $483,000 is not $400 million. It is considerably less than that. NPR also didnt say that the electric vehicles referenced in the documents would be Teslas. Blumenthals letter to Rubio assumes that State is buying Teslas, though, and that its going all in on Cybertrucks. This concern was exacerbated by the fact that the vehicle in question was a Tesla Cybertruck, a failed experiment of a car which has been subject to numerous recalls since its announcement, and would not reasonably be considered for this purpose absent a heavy thumb on the scale, Blumenthal said.NPRs story featured several experts who have conflicting opinions about the viability of up-armored Cybertrucks as State Department vehicles. Some say its the perfect vehicle, others say it would be terrible. But, as best I can tell, no contract for the purchase of Cybertrucks exists or has ever existed. NPR doesnt claim that the State Department plans to spend money on Cybertrucks, just that it could. I spent the morning crawling through the public database of government contracts. The State Department has spent the last few years buying electric vehicles. Some of them are Teslas. The total cost of the Teslas marked as light duty by State in 2024 is around $500,000. Most of the individual contracts are for Model Ys and will be used in South East Asia.Blumenthals letter spends a lot of time decrying States use of Cybertrucks, something that was probably never planned. Meeks, however, spends more time on what I think is the real scandal here: stealth editing the forecast document. Screenshots published by NPR in its February 24 reporting showed that in the two weeks since Drop Site first published news of the procurement of Armored Tesla vehicles, the Department had quietly edited the procurement forecast documents to remove any specific mention of Tesla but did not immediately remove the project itself, Meeks said. This suggests the Department may have intended to move forward with the project but obscure any involvement by Mr. Musk or Tesla. At the time, State told me that writing Tesla in that space was a clerical error. It insisted it should have been a generic entry that read electric vehicle manufacturer. On one hand, changing it makes them look guilty. On the other hand, the very real graft and corruption perpetrated by Musk and other Trump associates is out in the open. They are hardly trying to hide it.Verizon once had a contract to upgrade the communications systems of the Federal Aviation Administration worth around $2 billion. Musk suggested it wasnt up to the task and said that SpaceX, a company he owns, should do it instead. Thats happening. Musk and his companies were facing several investigations and pending regulations related to Neuralink, X, and SpaceX. Using DOGE, hes decimated the agencies in charge of many of those investigations. Musk has celebrated these perceived wins publicly. He posts about them on X. Trump praised Starlink during an interview with Sean Hannity. Theres going to be a lot of corruption in the next four years, and a lot of it simply wont be hidden. If State ends up buying Teslas, Musk will post about how awesome its going to be for the government to drive his cars. Trump will announce the deal with fanfare and praise. Hed come out and say he got a really good deal from Elon on electric vehicles. It wont be hidden. Itll be right in front of our faces.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like Allison Stanger, Middlebury, The Conversation Published March 9, 2025 By AJ Dellinger Published March 8, 2025 By Matt Novak Published March 8, 2025 By AJ Dellinger Published March 8, 2025 By Matthew Gault Published March 7, 2025 By Matthew Gault Published March 7, 2025

  • A Surprising Factor Helped Supercharge Floridas Catastrophic 2023 Hurricane Idalia
    gizmodo.com
By Isaac Schultz Published March 10, 2025 | Comments (0) | A map showing the salinity of the sea surface (the greener, the more saline) and the path of Hurricane Idalia, color-coded to show its category. Image: Lauren Dauphin, using sea surface salinity data courtesy of JPL and the SMAP Science Team and the Multiscale Ultrahigh Resolution (MUR) project A previously overlooked factor may have contributed to the debilitating strength of Hurricane Idalia, which cost the United States billions of dollars when it struck in August 2023. According to a team of researchers that studied the climatic conditions around the storm, the typical cocktail of weather conditions that feed a hurricane doesnt add up in Idalias case. The teams research analyzing the storms evolution was published last month in Environmental Research Letters. The team found that the usual suspectswarm sea surface temperatures, ocean heat beneath the surface, and low vertical wind shear all played a role in Idalias intensification. But the team found that a freshwater plumeincluding river discharge into the Gulfcreated a density gradient between the surface water and deeper, cooler water, allowing Idalia to continue to draw strength from the warmth of the Gulfs surface. Wind wants to mix the water, bringing cold water up to the surface and warm water down to the depths, said marine scientistChuanmin Hu, one of the studys authors, in a NASA Earth Observatory release. But the density gradient between surface fresh water and deeper salty water makes this difficult. Plumes from rivers have historically contributed to the intensification of hurricanes; according to the release, more than two-thirds of storms between 1960 and 2000 that hit Category 5 strength at some point in their cycles passed over the historical region of freshwater plumes. If you have a persistent river plume in the right location at the right time, Hu said, you may have a perfect storm. Hurricane Idalia carved through Floridas Big Bend before charting a northeasterly course across the American Southeast. The storm quickly swelled from a Category 1 to Category 4 storm, subsiding only slightly into a Category 3 hurricane when it made landfall on August 30, 2023, with maximum sustained winds of nearly 125 miles (205 kilometers) per hour.A map showing the salinity of the sea surface (the greener, the more saline) and the path of Hurricane Idalia, color-coded to show its category. Image: Lauren Dauphin, using sea surface salinity data courtesy of JPL and the SMAP Science Team and the Multiscale Ultrahigh Resolution (MUR) project The hurricane raised concerns about gas contamination, cut off power for hundreds of thousands of people, and even dropped a tree on the Tallahassee home of Governor Ron DeSantis. The storm shaped up to be the costliest of 2023, tallying a whopping $3.6 billion in damages. The storm departed over the Atlantic on August 31 after cutting across Georgia and the South Carolina coast. The analysis of contextual factors in Idalias formation could help researchers better understand the conditions that foster extreme storms in the future. Consider Hurricane Milton, which shattered records in October 2024 when it intensified from a Category 1 storm to a Category 5 storm in just 7 hours, after feeding on very warm waters in the western Gulf. Category 5 storms are the highest intensity on theSaffir-Simpson hurricane wind scale; to be a Category 5 storm, a system must achieve wind speeds greater than 157 miles per hour (253 kilometers per hour). When Milton touched down in central Florida as a Category 3 storm, it spawned at least three dozen tornadoes across the Sunshine State. As ocean temperatures continue to break records for warmth, we should expect more extreme and rapidly evolving hurricanes. Hopefully, similar research to the Idalia study will lead to improved forecast models,so that authorities can be prepared for these storms landfall. Hurricane season will resume on June 30 and run through November 30.Daily NewsletterYou May Also Like By Matt Novak Published March 3, 2025 By Isaac Schultz Published February 28, 2025 By Isaac Schultz Published February 19, 2025 By Margherita Bassi Published February 12, 2025 By Isaac Schultz Published February 11, 2025 By Passant Rabie Published January 21, 2025
