• Nothing Phone 3A and 3A Pro Are Fun, Flashy and Affordable
    www.cnet.com
London-based tech firm Nothing has delighted us beforewith its light-up Android phones that provide some much-needed frivolity in a world full of plain, gray smartphones that take themselves too seriously. The Nothing Phone 3A and 3A Pro are cut from the same cloth as their predecessors, packing solid all-round specs, affordable price tags and an LED-infused design that stands out from the crowd. The Nothing Phone 3A is the base model in the new series, starting at $379 with 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. In the UK, you can pick up a pared-back model with 8GB RAM and 128GB of storage for only 329, or get the 12GB/256GB model for 379. The Phone 3A Pro has a more full-featured camera system than the base 3A, but shares the same processor, display and batteries. It costs $459 (449) for the 12GB/256GB model.I tested the Nothing Phone 3A Pro while on the ground in Barcelona for last week's Mobile World Congress. I'm quite keen on the phone's balance of price and performance and look forward to seeing how it stacks up against other affordable phones like the new Samsung Galaxy A series and the Google Pixel 8A-- as well as pricier budget phones like the iPhone 16E.Read more: MWC Barcelona 2025: What to Expect From Samsung, Xiaomi and MoreNothing Phone 3A's flashy design Flashy lights? Yes, please. Andrew Lanxon/CNETThe design is the first thing that stands out about these phones. The glass back reveals screws and data ribbons, giving it an industrial look that I find appealing. The LED lights -- which Nothing calls the Glyph -- are strewn around the camera units on both phones and light up to alert you to incoming notifications. They're a fun addition to Nothing's phones that you won't find anywhere else. Both phones have 6.7-inch displays that looked bright and vibrant during my hands-on time, easily countering Barcelona's gray, overcast weather. Those under the bright midday California sun may have a different experience. With an IP68 water resistance rating, taking calls in the pouring rain (again, not you, California) won't be a problem.Read more:Samsung Shows Off Quirky Pincer Phone, Folding Console and Flexi Briefcase ConceptsNothing Phone 3A and 3A Pro performance The display is vibrant and sharp. Andrew Lanxon/CNETPowering the 3A series is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 processor, which provided decent scores on our benchmark tests, especially considering the price of the phones. While not topping today's flagship phones, the 3A Pro's results are more in line with the Pixel 8A and Galaxy A35 5G, both of which are great phones. In everyday use, the phone has plenty of power for essential tasks, while games like Alto's Odyssey and Vampire Survivors ran smoothly.Read more: Oppo Find N5 Review: A Remarkably Thin and Surprisingly Practical Foldable PhoneNothing Phone 3A and AIBoth phones run Android 15 at their core, but Nothing has heavily customized the interface with a stark, monochrome aesthetic. It looks sleek, but I sometimes struggle to distinguish app icons when they're reduced to minimalist black-and-white buttons. Still, you might be into the mono look, and if not, you can customize the layout to your liking. Nothing promises a total of six years of software and security support, which is good, especially considering the price.Gemini Advanced, Gemini Live and Circle to Search are all available to use on the phones, and while Nothing hasn't thrown in much of its own AI stuff (for which I'm grateful), it has launched one tool that I quite like. Called the Essential Space, it's designed as a central hub for storing your thoughts, notes, screenshots and ideas throughout the day. The Essential Space will fill up with all your thoughts and ideas. Maybe. Andrew Lanxon/CNETSee some shoes you like? Open the camera and use the dedicated Essential Space button on the side of the phone to save a shot -- along with your voice note about them -- to your Space. Need to buy brie, vodka, party hats and snake food on the way home? A long button press will let you dictate your shopping list to add it to your Space to check later. It's a nice idea in theory, though right now it seems limited in its functionality. Essential Space is essentially a hub for screenshots and voice notes, but I see its potential. It's refreshing to find a feature that's both unique and genuinely useful. Nothing emphasizes that Essential Space is still in beta, with more features on the way -- so keep an eye on this space.Read more:We've Found 6 MWC 2025 Products You Can Actually Start Ordering Right NowNothing Phone 3A Pro cameraBoth phones pack 50-megapixel main cameras and while Nothing says the Pro model has upgraded autofocus and dynamic range, I haven't yet been able to compare them, so my thoughts here are based on my use of the Phone 3A Pro. Enlarge Image Taken with the main camera, this shot is vibrant and sharp. Andrew Lanxon/CNET Enlarge Image Despite the challenging high-contrast scene, the Phone 3A Pro does a decent job balancing bright highlights and shadowy areas. Andrew Lanxon/CNET Enlarge Image There are various filters, but I particularly like the black-and-white one. Andrew Lanxon/CNET Enlarge Image The ultrawide camera delivers a well-balanced exposure in this shot. Andrew Lanxon/CNETWhile the base 3A packs a 50 megapixel telephoto camera capable of 2x optical zoom, the 3A Pro's 50-megapixel periscope camera offers 3x optical zoom, with 6x "in-sensor" zoom, which effectively crops the sensor out to achieve a longer zoom. Enlarge Image Taken at 6x zoom, this shot remains nice and sharp Andrew Lanxon/CNETThe base Phone 3A has a 32-megapixel front-facing camera and the 3A Pro has a 50-megapixel sensor that's larger to help take sharper shots. Enlarge Image Testing the Pro's front-facing camera was the perfect excuse to get a large beer. The image itself is fine, especially considering the relatively low-light environment. Andrew Lanxon/CNETNothing Phone 3A, 3A Pro or a rival phone? The Nothing 3A (left) and Nothing 3A Pro (right). Andrew Lanxon/CNETI'm surprised by how little difference there is between the two models. With the same processor, display, and 5,000mAh battery (with 50W fast charging), the main distinctions are the added periscope zoom and the higher-resolution front-facing camera. Is photography important to you? If so, maybe spring for the pro. Otherwise, save yourself a few bucks and go for the base model. Both phones seem to offer a solid overall experience at a genuinely reasonable price. At $379, it's a great deal for a phone that can handle almost anything -- especially when Apple considers $599 "affordable" for the iPhone 16E. However, unless you need a new phone right away, it may be worth waiting to see how Samsung's newly announced Galaxy A26 and A36 stack up, or if Google's Pixel 9A is just around the corner. • The Tesla Protests Are Getting Bigger And Rowdier
    www.theverge.com
This weekend, protests escalated at Tesla showrooms across the nation. Hundreds of people gathered to boycott Elon Musk and his involvement in the Trump administration as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which is overseeing a massively disruptive effort to fire thousands of federal workers to slash government spending. Most of these protests are associated with the Tesla Takedown movement that first emerged in February. It encourages supporters to sell your Teslas, dump your stock, join the picket lines as part of efforts to stop Musk. But momentum has ramped up significantly in the past week, leading to bigger turnouts and some arrests.Though most of these protests have been peaceful, there have been separate reports of vandalism and arson directed at Tesla. Last week, Tesla charging stations in Boston were set ablaze, while dozens of vehicles were torched at a dealership in France. Gunshots shattered windows and damaged cars at a Tesla showroom in Oregon, and a Boston man was arrested for slapping stickers of Musk making a Nazi-like salute on Tesla vehicles. And Colorado authorities arrested a woman accused of tossing Molotov cocktails at Tesla cars parked at a dealership and allegedly spray-painting an expletive at the entrance. Heres a rundown of the biggest protests that happened this weekend.ManhattanFive protestors were arrested during a Tesla Takedown protest in Manhattan. Image: Getty ImagesMore than 350 protestors showed up outside the Tesla showroom in Manhattans West Village neighborhood on Saturday, chanting things like, Nobody voted for Elon Musk and Oligarchs out, democracy in, according to reports from Vanity Fair and The New York Times. Another protestor held up a sign saying, Send Musk to Mars Now!! This protest coincided with the International Womens Day march, making it even bigger.A heavy police presence was in the area, as shown in a TikTok with officers surrounding a Tesla Cybertruck parked on the side of the road. Five protestors were arrested for disorderly conduct, while another was apprehended for resisting arrest, obstruction, and violation of local law, New York Daily News reports. This follows the arrest of nine people during a Tesla Takedown protest in Manhattan the previous week.BostonDemonstrators performed in front of the Tesla dealership in Boston. Image: Boston Globe via Getty ImagesAround 300 demonstrators rallied outside a Tesla showroom on Bostons Boylston Street, as reported by local news station WCVB. The group also staged a flash mob in front of the dealership, according to The Boston Globe. We are not condoning property damage for sure, but Elon should keep in mind that if he wants to attack the basic rights, the basic well-being of regular people, he shouldnt be surprised when some people decide to be more direct about it, Shua Sanchez, a rally organizer, told WCVB.No arrests were made during the protest.ChicagoHundreds of protestors stood outside the Streeterville Tesla showroom on Saturday, which was joined by marchers from the Womens Day march, Block Club Chicago and the Chicago Tribune report. Protestors held similar signs, like Launch Musk to Mars and Democracy Dies with DOGE.Protestors outside a Tesla dealership in Chicago. Image: Anadolu via Getty ImagesMeanwhile, protestors at the Tesla showroom in Chicagos Orland Park clashed with supporters of the MAGA movement, according to the Chicago Tribune. There were no reports of arrests at either demonstration.Delray BeachThere were also dozens of Tesla Takedown protestors at Musks Delray Beach, Florida dealership, with demonstrators holding signs like Fight fascism, Democracy is not a business plan, and No one voted for Elon Musk!! CBS 12 reports. Were here today rallying against Elon and what hes done, one protestor, Jeff Finkelstein, told CBS 12. Ever since Trumps been in its been more about Musk than Trump and were just showing our frustration.PasadenaOn the West Coast, hundreds of protestors stood in front of Teslas Old Pasadena dealership in California. Rep. Judy Chu (D-CA) made an appearance during the event, where she criticized Musks DOGE initiative and President Donald Trump. Protestors gather outside Teslas Pasadena dealership. Image: AFP via Getty ImagesHe [Trump] said that firing American federal workers would be making America better, Chu said, according to Pasadena Now. No. Instead, he has fired thousands of workers from the National Weather Service, which we rely on to tell us if theres a dangerous weather event. This is the second weekend in a row that demonstrators gathered outside the Pasadena dealership.PortugalTesla protests are even popping up outside of the US, with dozens of people in Lisbon, Portugal, holding signs that said Boycott Tesla outside a Tesla dealership, Reuters reports. This demonstration occurred on Sunday, just before what could be the countrys third parliamentary election in three years.Demonstrators hold signs at Teslas dealership in Lisbon. Image: AFP via Getty ImagesAs noted by Reuters, the protestors raised concerns about Musks promotion of right-wing politics in Europe. One protestor told the outlet that Musk may not be able to have enough influence in the next election in Portugal but with the amount of money he has, step by step, he can do that. How has this affected Tesla?Even before the protests started, Teslas sales dropped year over year for the first time. Some drivers have also decided to trade in or sell their Teslas to avoid embarrassment, with one owner telling The New York Times she was called a Nazi. Teslas stock price has also plummeted more than 50 percent from its record high in December, Forbes reports, while Musks net worth sunk from $464 billion in December to $330 billion. In response to the protests, Musk accused billionaires George Soros, Reid Hoffman, and others of funding the protests through the Democratic fundraising platform ActBlue. However, as noted by Forbes, ActBlue does not fund groups, but instead is a platform through which donors can give money to campaigns or organizations.See More:

  • Infinite Uptime bags $35M to help factories optimize equipment usage
    techcrunch.com
Infinite Uptime, an Indian startup that offers predictive maintenance solutions for factories, has raised $35 million in a Series C funding round to expand its footprint in the U.S. and other markets. The manufacturing industry has lagged many industries in its adoption of tech, and much of the worlds heavy industry still depends on machines, many of which are aging and consume lots of energy. That said, modern tech is slowly but surely making its way into factories, particularly for maintenance and repairs the space Infinite Uptime is targeting. The company says it provides predictive maintenance and repair recommendations using proprietary sensors, software analytics, and AI-based diagnostics. It also has a smart dashboard that provides live monitoring capabilities. We give manufacturers pinpointed recommendations and intervention points, exactly what needs to be done in the plant, what parameters need to be looked at, which asset needs to be corrected, Infinite Uptimes founder Raunak Bhinge told TechCrunch. The startup says its piezoelectric sensors can offer diagnostics in high temperatures as well as complex acidic environments such as phosphoric acid, nitric acid and sulphuric acid plants. It has secured about five patents in this space, Bhinge said.To be clear, this isnt an entirely new opportunity in the market large manufacturers like Rockwell, Siemens, and Honeywell have enabled factories with AI-based automation for some time. Similarly, some startups like Augury help factories detect problems with their machines using sensors and AI.But Bhinge feels Infinite Uptime is fairly unique in terms of the tech stack, explaining that the startups approach is not top-down, like its larger competitors which use programmable logic controllers (PLC) or programmable limit switches (PLS). He argued that even the battery-based microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) that some startups offer have limited use cases and effectively do not work for high-temperature applications.Infinite Uptime targets manufacturers in the steel, cement, metals, mining, fertilizers, chemicals, and paper industries. It also partners with OEMs to plug its AI layer into their new products.Cumulatively, Infinite Uptime says its solutions have helped customers see downtime savings of 74,274 hours as well as 5% to 10% improvement in productivity, energy efficiency, safety, and compliance. The startup currently serves 800 plants in nearly 30 countries, and with the new funding, it aims to expand its presence in the U.S further. The Series C was led by Avataar Ventures, and saw participation from StepStone Group and LGVP, along with existing investors Tiger Global and GSR Ventures. The round brings the companys total capital raised to about $65 million since its inception in 2015, per Crunchbase.Bhinge said the startups revenue has increased by 2 times every year for the past three years, and it is operationally cash-flow positive. The company is looking to put the fresh cash towards product development, and intends to evaluate M&A opportunities to scale further.Infinite Uptime, which has about 350 employees, also plans to invest more in R&D and data science to enhance its AI insights and further close the gap between build capacity and actual production and also improve production efficiency, Bhinge said. Were investing in how we can help manufacturers [] use less energy per ton of production from their existing build capacity, he said.

  • NeRFs, Gaussian Splatting, and the Future of VFX
    www.fxguide.com
Exploring the Potential of Neural Rendering in Visual EffectsNeural Radiance Fields (NeRFs) and Gaussian Splatting are starting to change the way visual effects artists capture, render, and integrate photorealistic scenes, especially environments. In this fxpodcast, Sam Hodge, a machine learning software engineer currently at the Australian Institute for Machine Learning (AIML), University of Adelaide, discusses these emerging techniques and their growing role in virtual production, previsualization, and postvisualization. From Photogrammetry to Neural Radiance FieldsNeRFs offer a major evolution from traditional photogrammetry and LiDAR scanning. While photogrammetry reconstructs static 3D models with baked-in lighting, NeRFs allow for view-dependent rendering, meaning elements like specular highlights and transparency shift naturally based on the cameras perspective. This enables virtual cameras to move through a scene with realistic light transport, a key benefit for VFX workflows. The scene Sam discusses and training in NeRF StudioNeRFs in Production: Strengths and ChallengesNeRFs capture complex materials and lighting conditions with an unprecedented level of realism. However, rendering them remains computationally intensive, with each frame requiring billions of calculations per pixel. This challenge makes real-time applications difficult. To address this limitation, Gaussian Splatting (GS) has emerged as a faster alternative, trading some accuracy for major speed gains. Both NeRFs and GS are not quite ready for high end tentpole final pixel VFX pipelines, but with enormous amounts of research being published on both, it is not unreasonable to expect this to change soon. Certainly they do have a role in the wider range of AI and ML tools that are appearing and fore projects aiming for non-theatrical exhibition.Gaussian Splatting: A Faster AlternativeGaussian Splatting reconstructs 3D environments faster than NeRFs while maintaining photorealistic quality. Instead of relying on polygonal meshes, it uses elliptical points that blend together to create smooth, volumetric visuals. While it does not achieve the same level of fine detail as NeRFs, they can run in real-time, making it ideal for virtual production, game engines, and immersive AR/VR experiences.Dynamic Scenes and 4D Gaussian SplattingNeRFs traditionally struggle with moving objects, but 4D Gaussian Splatting processes time-based data, allowing for the volumetric reconstruction of dynamic performances. This makes it possible to capture live-action events, such as a tennis match or a stage performance, and view them from infinite angles. As a result, 4D Gaussian Splatting opens new possibilities for immersive media, volumetric filmmaking, and interactive experiences.Integrating Neural Rendering into VFX PipelinesVFX professionals continue exploring ways to integrate these technologies into existing pipelines. NeRFs and Gaussian Splatting do not inherently produce polygonal meshes. In the case of NeRFs they live inside a neural network, for GS, they can be thought of as a point cloud. While not immediately providing polygon solutions, they so prove valuable opportunities for: Previsualization and postvisualization, creating photorealistic environments and testing camera movements. Virtual production, providing interactive, high-fidelity backdrops on LED volumes. Location scouting, enabling filmmakers to explore digital representations of real-world locations. Performance capture and digital human references, offering new ways to train AI-driven facial and motion models.A New Era for Machine Learning in VFXThis weeks fxpodcast discussion also highlights how machine learning is reshaping the industry, particularly in generating high-quality synthetic training data. By using NeRFs and Gaussian Splatting to capture real-world actors, environments, and materials, artists can train AI models without relying on scraped internet content. This approach ensures ethical and controlled data acquisition while improving AI-based workflows.A Tool, Not a FadNeRFs and Gaussian Splatting are not passing trends. As these technologies continue to evolve, they offer real advantages for environment creation, camera planning, and immersive media. While the industry is still refining their applications, they already prove their value in production. For a deeper look at these cutting-edge technologies, listen to the full fxpodcast with Sam Hodge.https://www.fxguide.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/03/Apple_NeRF.mp4Here are the data files that Sam and Mike discuss in the podcast:https://r2.fxguide.com/articles/2025-02/prague_video_filtered.ziphttps://r2.fxguide.com/articles/2025-02/PragueInstallerImage.dmg.zipnote: you can also load the project into NeRF Studio as we have above.

  • Chromebooks to get Pixel battery health feature in ChromeOS update
    www.digitaltrends.com
Chromebooks will soon get a battery-preserving feature that has already proved popular on Google Pixel smartphones that run the latest Android 15 software. The feature will limit device charging to 80%. This update will help Chromebook batteries last longer overall. The feature is set to be a part of the ChromeOS 134 update, which is scheduled for next month.Recommended VideosNew ChromeOS policy for battery longevityIn ChromeOS 134, we will introduce a new battery charge limit policy that will offer more optimization options, which will help extend the lifespan of Chromebooks. Administrators will still be able to set a maximum charge limit, with 100% as the default, to minimize battery degradation and improve long-term reliability. This new policy will benefit both administrators managing fleets of devices, such as in educational settings, and individual users seeking to maximize their Chromebooks longevity. This policy will automatically apply and will require no user interaction. Google Chrome The ChromeOS subreddit spotted Googles details about the feature in its Chrome Enterprise and Education release notes for the current ChromeOS 133. While the update would be deployed by administrators, users who want to charge to 100% can proceed with charging their devices normally.Similarly, standard ChromeOS users will likely be expected to set the feature manually, similar to how it works on Android 15, Android Central noted.More details about the coming ChromeOS 134 upgrade are sure to surface in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, other murmurs about the subsequent Chrome OS 135 are already circulating. The coming still software may include AI-powered wallpapers and video call backgrounds for Chromebook Plus models, according to Android Authority. The prior ChromeOS 133 update, which was released earlier this month, included several interesting tweaks to the Chromebook ecosystem, including the bounce keys accessibility settings, super-resolution high-quality audio for Bluetooth mics, additional language support for Screencast, and updates to the ChromeOS welcome tour.Editors Recommendations
