• I was told to be quiet during the credits of a movie am I wrong?
    www.polygon.com
Have you ever been shushed during the credits of a movie? I have. So lets talk about movie theater etiquette.Earlier this year, I went to the Academy Museum in Los Angeles for a screening of Denis Villeneuves Arrival. (Great movie!) But even before it even started there werent any commercials, since this was a museum; we were just sitting in a theater with all the lights still on the guy in front of me turned around and passive-aggressively said, Wow, I can hear everything youre saying!Cut to the end of the movie. The credits rolled, everyone clapped, and then people in the theater started talking about what they just saw. Did you like it? The spaceship kinda looked like a big rock, didnt it? How about that twist? You know, the usual. My friend started talking to me as well.Thats when Passive-Aggressive Moviegoers partner turned around. Can you be quieter? My friend stopped talking completely because she felt awkward. I came to her defense. You can keep talking. Its OK, its the credits. Passive-Aggressive Moviegoer wouldnt have it. He stood up and began berating my friend. There was a full wagging of his finger as he said something like, You come to the theater to be quiet! Be silent! Be silent! Give it respect! Yadda yadda yadda.Look, I hate people talking during movies. I respect cinema. My friends and I were dead silent during the film (pre-credits, at least). I dont even like it if a friend tries to quip to me during a movie. I will simply look at them, give a half-assed smile, and then ignore them.So is talking during the credits OK or not? Look, if this were the premiere of Arrival, I wouldnt have been yapping during the credits. But if youre reading this, Passive-Aggressive Moviegoer at that Arrival screening: No, YOU shut up. You dont own the space. We werent yelling, or speaking louder than anyone else in the theater; we were just sitting near you. And if you really wanna watch credits in dead silence, watch the movie at home, dude.

  • Design Students Explore the Future of Seating With Workform
    design-milk.com
Stockholm-basedBeckmansCollege of Design presents Workform, a design collaboration between final-year Product Design students and three Swedish furniture companies, Edsbyn, SAVO and Svensson & Linnr. Throughout the year, students collaborate with professional companies to produce a piece of furniture, navigating real-world experiences like production timelines and manufacturing concerns. All based along a theme, this year it was sitting inclusive, flexible, active, resting, and pausing. Pulse, Hub, JUUNI, and Heed all debuted at Stockholm Design Week, adding invaluable insight from the next generation of designers.Pulse Design by Anna Nyman, Axel Peters, and Matarena Sjberg in collaboration with Svensson & LinnrThe Pulse chair offers three seat heights, allowing for children, adults, and older folks to sit in public with ease. Usually left out of the conversation of public design, kids and the elderly deserve consideration as well. This is an opportunity to promote conversation and community between groups that might not traditionally interact. As public art is steadily unprioritized, Pulse responds like a lifeline, a heartbeat breathing life into spaces previously unconsidered.Hub Design by Alva Jonasdotter, Love Persson, and Sara Lagerin in collaboration with EdsbynHub provides a warm, home-like feeling, in any space they happen to live. Utilizing the same base in two heights, this system employs multiple different cushion designs, adding to the multifunctional options for any interior. Easily adaptable, Hub creates a cohesive feeling, transitioning from office to home with ease.JUUNI Design by August Bllgren, Emelie Svensson, and Ellen Nilsson in collaboration with SAVOJUUNI allows us to perch, with a slight incline and footrest perfect for those half-resting, half-active moments. In two smart colorways, a pop of rusty orange delineates the relatively elegant legs, in keeping with its refined, minimal profile. Activating the core by nature of the seat, this chair reminds us to stay focused, perfect for a school or office.Heed Design by Siri Lvn, Karin Forsberg, and Victoria Johansson in collaboration with SAVOHeed is a piece of furniture that offers both active and passive seating positions, working between ergonomic considerations and energy levels both elegant and functional. Designed to encourage breaks throughout the day, the chair works for workplace or home office situations. With a special focus on producing with local materials and working with students on all aspects of the design process, Workform helps create lasting relationships and experiences that will prepare students for life after graduation. Industry experience is invaluable in how you can help in multiple aspects of the design process, ensuring easier employment opportunities in the future. As sectors diversify, certain aspects of traditional design education must respond in turn, offering a more comprehensive view of the future of furniture. To learn more about the Workform exhibition, visit beckmans.se.Photography by Emilian Jenrich.

  • Whipsaw Is Setting the Stage for Quantum Computer Design
    design-milk.com
Quantum computing could well be the future but while were still a long way off from having quantum computers in our homes, were likely much closer to them being actually useful in data centers. Those machines may be hidden from public view, but theres no reason they cant be design-forward and to that end, design firm Whipsaw has partnered with quantum computing company IonQ to build scalable and modular machines that can seamlessly fit into data centers. The result of the collaboration is the Forte Enterprise Quantum Computer, which is aimed at setting a visual language for the quantum computers of the future. It combines form and function, while making quantum computing a little more approachable. For the uninitiated, quantum computers flip the concept of computing in general on its head. Traditional computers process information in bits, which can be either a 0 or a 1. Quantum computers use tiny particles called qubits, which can exist as both a 0 or a 1 at the same time, essentially allowing quantum computers to process information much faster. The tech is still early in development, and its entirely possible that well never have quantum computers in homes, given the fact that qubits need to exist in extreme conditions, like near-absolute-zero temperatures. But, they could be hugely beneficial for scientific study, AI processing, and more. Quantum computers are already being used, but mostly in research settings, and theyre not really powerful enough yet to help out with the large-scale calculations that researchers hope theyll one day perform. The IonQ Forte Enterprise Quantum Computer is specifically built for scale, allowing customers to connect units together. It has flush handles, and is designed in a way that lets users arrange units in rows perfect for data centers. The unit is undeniably modern, offering a large, silver enclosure with etched multi-layer doors that Whipsaw says is designed to symbolize the qubits journey across its waveform. This design transforms an abstract technological concept into a tangible and approachable identity, defining what quantum computing should look like in the modern era, shares Whipsaw.Well have to see how long it takes for quantum computing to be commonplace in data centers, but hopefully when that happens, theyll look as great as the IonQ Forte Enterprise Quantum Computer. For now, these new units are being used at IonQs data centers in Washington, D.C. and Seattle. For more information, visit whipsaw.com.Photography courtesy of Whipsaw.

  • This Solar-Powered, Subscription-Free Eufy Security Camera Is $100 Right Now
    lifehacker.com
We may earn a commission from links on this page. Deal pricing and availability subject to change after time of publication. If youre looking for an outdoor security camera that doesnt need constant battery swaps or a monthly subscription, the Eufy SoloCam S40 might be worth consideringespecially now that it's $99.99 (down from its usual $199). This battery-powered camera comes with a built-in solar panel, which, according to Eufy, only needs two hours of direct sunlight daily to stay charged. Thats the kind of low-maintenance setup we want, but as with all solar-powered devices, real-world performance depends on actual sunlight exposure, so if you live somewhere gloomy or have lots of shade, you might run into trouble. Setup is straightforward, with built-in wifi allowing it to connect directly to your router without requiring a base station (but that also means youll need a strong signal wherever you install it). Eufy Security SoloCam S40 $99.99 at Walmart $199.99 Save $100.00 Get Deal Get Deal $99.99 at Walmart $199.99 Save $100.00 Security features are solid. The 90dB siren can be activated remotely if an intruder is spotted, and the two-way audio lets you communicate with visitorsor warn off unwanted ones. AI-powered motion detection helps cut down false alerts by recognizing whether movement is from a person or something else, and custom activity zones allow you to filter notifications to specific areas. Unlike many competing security cameras, the SoloCam S40 doesnt require a subscription to access past recordings. Instead, it comes with 8GB of built-in storage. However, HomeKit isnt supported, which might be a dealbreaker if youre deep into Apples ecosystem. On the plus side, Alexa and Google Assistant integration means you can view the live feed on a smart display or include the camera in automation routines. The IP67-rated build of the SoloCam S40 means it can handle rain and dust, while its 130-degree field of view provides decent coverage. When motion is detected, youll get instant alerts on your smartphone and access to a 2K video feed through the Eufy Security app. The app also lets you tweak motion settings and review recordings, among other controls. Day or night, footage is recorded in color, thanks to its 600-lumen floodlight, though this light can only be set to trigger on motion detection or be manually turned on via the appit wont stay on for general illumination (something to consider if you were hoping to use it as a permanent fixture for illuminating a driveway or entryway).

  • The Devil May Cry Netflix series has a real trailer, and now Papa Roach is stuck in my head
    www.engadget.com
There are many reasons Devil May Cry fans will enjoy the upcoming show adaptation's new trailer. But, I must warn you, after watching it Papa Roach's "Last Resort" will be stuck in your head for days. The early 2000s song plays alongside a two-minute trailer that showcases Dante and, notably, his twin brother Vergil. There are many great takeaways from this peek at the show, but one of the most amusing might be when Lady rips of Dante's shirt and he responds, "Ripped and irresistible dream boat, I know. You still can't just tear a guy's clothes off." It's that kind of lighthearted banter mixed with the action sequences that make us so excited for the Devil May Cry series.A television series version of Capcom's Devil May Cry game has been in the works for years now. We first got a teaser back in 2023, but we only learned in January that it will premiere on Netflix on April 3. The animated series from Korean company Studio Mir is actually Devil May Cry's second go as a show in 2007, a 12-episode anime based on the game ran in Japan. Not familiar with the video game? Here's Netflix's synopsis for the Devil May Cry TV show: "Sinister forces are at play at the portal between the human and demon realms. In the middle of it all is Dante, an orphaned demon hunter for hire, unaware that the fate of both worlds hangs around his neck."This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/entertainment/tv-movies/the-devil-may-cry-netflix-series-has-a-real-trailer-and-now-papa-roach-is-stuck-in-my-head-131853378.html?src=rss

  • Netflix's first gaming boss has left the company
    www.engadget.com
Mike Verdu has left Netflix, according to Game File with Stephen Totilo. Netflix brought the former Oculus and EA exec onboard to launch and lead its gaming efforts in 2021. Under Verdu's leadership, the company released a bunch of new and ported titles, as well as establishing an internal game development operation. In mid-2024, however, Netflix changed its gaming strategy and hired Alain Tascan, the executive vice president for game development at Epic Games, to lead its gaming efforts. Verdu still served as the VP for games until November 2024, after which he was named as the Vice President of generative AI for games. On LinkedIn, Verdu wrote that his role was about "driving a 'once in a generation' inflection point for game development and player experiences using generative AI." He added that he was "focused on a creator-first vision for AI, one that puts creative talent at the center, with AI being a catalyst and an accelerant." Verdu has yet to update his LinkedIn profile with a new role. As Totilo said in his newsletter, Netflix's gaming efforts have undergone some big changes since Tascan took over.In 2022, Netflix hired former Overwatch boss Chacko Sonny to lead an internal AAA studio known as Team Blue. It then brought on Halo exec Joseph Staten, as well as God of War art director Rafael Grassett to work on a multi-platform AAA game for an all-new IP. But in October 2024, Netflix shut down Team Blue. The company had also lost Leanne Loombe, who headed up its second and third-party gaming development and publishing efforts. Loombe recently became the head of games at Annapurna Interactive following a mass exodus, wherein all 25 members of the studio's team collectively resigned. And in early February, Netflix canceled its release plans for six games that were previously heading to iOS and Android, including Thirsty Suitors and Tales of the Shire: A Lord of the Rings Game. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/gaming/netflixs-first-gaming-boss-has-left-the-company-124555235.html?src=rss
