Case StudyHow Vinik Sports Group Electrifies Tampa Bay Fan ExperiencesVinik Sports Group is redefining the sports entertainment landscape. Their commitment to pushing the boundaries of creativity and technology is evident in every aspect of their work, from stunning 3D animations to innovative data visualizations. by Greyscalegorilla Vinik Sports Group, the powerhouse sports conglomerate behind the Tampa Bay Lightning, Amelie Arena, the Yuengling Center and others, is renowned for its innovative and visually stunning game night experiences. Their in-house team of talented motion designers leverages powerful tools like Greyscalegorilla Plus for Teams to bring their creative visions to life. The teams innovative use of technology, particularly 3D design and motion graphics, has captivated audiences and garnered industry recognition. Engaging Fans from the Start The Amelie Arena entrance features a new striking 3D exterior display, which has already become a Tampa Bay landmark.By leveraging 3D technology and advanced lighting techniques, the team creates visually striking experiences that captivate fans and elevate the overall game-day atmosphere. The 3D exterior display not only enhances the arenas aesthetic appeal but also serves as a dynamic platform for showcasing team animations, sponsorship packages, and promotes upcoming events. We want fans to have a full experience the moment they step onto our plaza. Were creating memories for our fans. Theyre in our world. Hunter Perkins Technical Production Manager, Vinik Sports Group / Tampa Bay Lightning Its hard not to be amazed by the lifelike helicopter seemingly flying out of the building, a truly awe-inspiring sight that sets the stage for an unforgettable experience. To create the eye-catching 3D experiences, the team relies heavily onGreyscalegorilla to elevate the quality of their work. Leveraging pre-built assets, like textures and materials, saves countless hours of work. Delve into how Vinik Sports Group utilizes Greyscalegorilla to elevate their game night presentations, from jaw-dropping 3D animations to captivating real-time graphics. How do you create an engaging fan experience? We prioritize 3D for high-impact moments that will be showcased on television or large screens. For example, we might create a 3D animation for a key player introduction or a special moment during the game. For shorter, less prominent graphics, we often opt for 2D solutions, such as PNG renders with added effects in post-production. During the game were getting statistics constantly how fast a shot was, how fast players are moving, how many shots there have been so theres lots of tie-in to that as far as game presentation goes, and bringing that data in and finding interesting ways to present it to fans so they have access to a little bit more information. For example, during pre-game skates, we display computer graphics featuring player statistics. We might show a players headshot alongside their season goal total. How does Greyscalegorilla fit into your teams workflow? Our in-house team is project based, and we incorporate Greyscalegorilla in anything we can, honestly. Its very easy to use. We create the in-house broadcast package for the Tampa Bay Lightning title intros, promotional templates, lower-thirds, replay wipes and any other extra requests for social, web, or something that airs on TV. We rely on Greyscalegorilla to help us speed-up our process. We are a very fast-paced environment for example, the next five days, we have three games. So sometimes we dont have a month to create a project. Sometimes its one or two weeks. Sometimes its a day. Can you share a specific example of how Greyscalegorilla has helped you? When we were in the Stanley Cup championships, I remember lighting, texturing, and rendering the Stanley Cup logo and animating it up and down for one of our boards. I found out later that fans were taking photos in front of it, and, really, that is why were doing this. We are creating memories for our fans. And Greyscalegorilla makes that job easier. We are creating memories for our fans. And Greyscalegorilla makes that job easier. Darlene Sanchez Motion Graphics Creative Manager, Vinik Sports Group / Tampa Bay Lightning What are your favorite Greyscalegorilla tools and assets? I love the textures honestly. The frost surface imperfection textures are what compelled our org to acquire a Teams account, after I watched a tutorial on making realistic-looking frost utilizing Greyscalegorilla. I was able to use the textures immediately, adding frost to a floating puck that was flying across the screen. Another example, I have a hockey helmet for our third jersey look, its a matte black, and I thought it would be cool to have the visor frosted up. So, I just opened up Greyscalegorilla and started plugging in frost textures. Now, every time we have a game and were utilizing 3D helmets, whether for us or our opponents, we can repurpose the effect. So, obviously the textures are a huge help. We also use a lot of metal materials inside of Greyscalegorilla Plus. And I love the Area Light Maps that we can just plug in to add that extra spice. Thats definitely one of my favorites. How do you balance creating a consistent brand look across all your graphics while also ensuring each game has a unique feel? In the summer, we spend some time creating our campaign package that we templatize, with different elements for each game, and put on display for the fans. Thats what our signage helps with. Take, for example, when were making bespoke assets for specific games. Like theme nights. 50% of our games are technically theme nights, and for all of those, there are bespoke assets created. 50% of our games are theme nights which require new visuals. Darlene Sanchez Motion Graphics Creative Manager, Vinik Sports Group / Tampa Bay Lightning Every year we add another theme night. Hockey Fights Cancer night. First Responders night. Military Appreciation night. Halloween is a huge one. Its increasing every year, so were making more and more bespoke assets and deliverables to display on screens throughout the arena and on the big external sign outside the arena and in marketing materials. So, these themed elements, we add them into the previously mentioned campaign package. We essentially rebuild everything according to the theme. Lower thirds. Replay wipes. Title intros. Promotional elements. Any high-rez screenshots we can provide to our marketing team and its graphic designers to create a cohesive look. Again, Greyscalegorilla makes that job easier. It helps speed up our process so much. Tell us about your Best Theme Night award. Winning Best Theme Night at the Idea Conference was a huge honor. Every NHL, NBA, and NFL team comes together after voting throughout the year for whos got the best promotional video. Its almost like, you know, the Oscars for sports. We submitted the work we did for Gasparilla Night, which took place during Gasparilla Pirate Festival. Its a popular annual event, special to Tampa, with parades and parties and the like, and, really, its just an excuse for people to dress up as pirates and have fun. Over the last three seasons, we had a couple of games that lined up with the festivities. So, we had to find ways to convince fans to still come to the arena after partying all day. So, we created a pirate-themed 3D package that we submitted alongside everything else we do as game presentation, like video features and live activations. And then we actually won! Ultimately, its work like this that has cemented our reputation as being among the top two NHL organizations as far as our game presentation entertainment. Were second only to Las Vegas, but we always say its because they have all the money to buy all the toys, But well take it, because, while we have a smaller budget, we do a lot with what we have. So, to be up here with them is a big deal for us. Greyscalegorilla Teams is Trusted by the Best in the Game Leave a Comment:Cancel This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. Case StudyVegas Creates the Coolest NHL Experience with GreyscalegorillaThe Golden Knights use Greyscalegorilla Plus for Teams to create thrilling in-arena content that stands out from the spectacle of Las Vegas. by Greyscalegorilla Key Takeaways Greyscalegorilla helps the Vegas Golden Knights Entertainment team create thrilling in-arena content quickly without sacrificing quality. The Greyscalegorilla Teams workflow is vital to the rapid turnaround required to create engaging noise prompts to invigorate fans. Deliverable approval happens faster thanks to high-quality Greyscalegorilla assets and plugins that always work. The Vegas Golden Knights hockey franchise regularly plays for sell-out crowds of 18,000+ in the T-Mobile Arena on the Vegas strip. Founded in 2017, the team quickly established itself as an NHL powerhouse, reaching the Stanley Cup finals in its first season and winning the Stanley Cup championship in 2023. The teams Entertainment, Experience and Production department is tasked with delivering exciting in-arena content that stands out from the surrounding spectacle of Las Vegas. The departments three motion graphics artists offer a real-world example of how a Greyscalegorilla Teams account can streamline the fast-paced workflow required to create supercharged fan engagement. That was one of the first things I did when I got here we need to get this. We need licenses for Greyscalegorilla. Dan Senior Sr. Motion Graphics Manager, Vegas Golden Knights CREATING HIGH QUALITY CONTENT AT TOP SPEED Dan Senior is Sr. Manager of Motion Graphics for the Vegas Golden Knights. When he started with the organization, one of the first things he did was bring Greyscalegorilla into the org, having used the site throughout his career. Really, I just showed my manager look at the amount of resources available to us here, and look at the quality of them, Senior says. All of the textures, HDRIs, and things like that. And just the ease of use in the Cinema 4D environment, to be able to iterate quickly, produce, and version out ideas very quickly. Seniors team is tasked with creating eye-catching in-arena content and high-energy in-game moments like elaborate on-ice projections and on-screen noise prompts designed to get the crowd on its feet. Generally, the attitude is bigger is better, Senior says. You know, the more things exploding on ice projections, the better. We have to constantly push ourselves in what we can achieve in the space of time that we have, and Greyscalegorilla assets offer the high fidelity and speed we need to flip these grand, high-resolution ice projections quickly. Im almost certain most NHL teams dont do ice projections, Senior says. But theyre very much a big showy element of what we do here in Las Vegas, and they require tools you can rely on. Assets that are going to look good in any situation and work to a very professional standard. When youre planning all of that out, where do you go to find the assets you need? When it comes to Greyscalegorilla, I know I dont have to worry. Noise prompts are a really good way to make sure the crowd is involved and interactive. The Signal plugin has been a godsend for making noise prompts. Jalen Jones Sr. Motion Graphics Designer, Vegas Golden Knights MOTION GRAPHICS FOR MAXIMUM ENGAGEMENT Senior Motion Graphics Designer Jalen Jones has been with the Vegas Golden Knights Entertainment Team since October, 2018. On top of theme-night, play-by-play, and specific sponsor-centric graphics, one of his tasks is creating content designed to engage and energize fans during games. We take the entertainment part of in-game entertainment very seriously. Our crowd is rowdy; anything that tells them to make noise, theyre pretty much going to make noise, Jones says. Jones is often tasked with creating multiple animated noise prompts that display on T-Mobile Arenas massive screens during matches. To get them done and shipped for approval quickly, Jones depends on Signal, Greyscalegorillas proprietary Cinema 4D animation plugin. Im using pretty much everything. All the Materials. All the Textures. A lot of the HDRI stuff. Light Kit Pro. Just the Library in general, Jones says. But Signal is my go-to for making noise prompts, because Im able to animate assets without having to worry about doing keyframes myself. With Signal, once you figure out a certain look or animation that you want, you can take it from one project into another. And that saves a lot of time just when it comes to putting a project together. Saving time and steps is important in an industry defined by constant fan engagement, long seasons, and ever-evolving stakes. Jones and his Golden Knight teammates turn to Greyscalegorilla to keep them ahead of the game. Really, it just helps everything, whether Im doing a little background animation or noise-prompt text jumping or a helmet nodding to the beat, its super helpful. Thats how the workflow goes using Greyscalegorilla. Greyscalegorilla Teams is Trusted by the Best in the Game Leave a Comment:Cancel This site uses Akismet to reduce spam. • Recreate the Apple Hello 3D Text + Free Scene File
    greyscalegorilla.com
Well, hello! I was recently inspired by the latest Apple ad (you can see the full ad down below) and as soon as I saw the the opening animation, I knew I had to try to make it myself. Shoutout to all the artists who worked on this project! I knew the basics, hop into Cinema 4D with the spline pen tool and spell out hello but then what? Well I dont know how exactly they did it, but I knew I could find a way on my own. Creating the 3D text I started by tracing the hello reference text trying using as few spline points as possible. Then I jumped into an overhead mode to start separating the curves front to back so they werent touching, kind of the same technique youd use if you were working on writing out in neon letters. Next we need to break the script into pieces to create the L effect. Im certain they had a more elegant solution and more time, but Im going to cheat as much as I can here just to quickly get a similar look and feel. My hack was to clone the L shape and then animate it, relying on my camera meant any craziness in the back of the letters wouldnt be too visible. All the breaks in the letter are actually hidden by the transition, so it doesnt have to be perfect. Breaking 3D text into different parts and animating So we have our parts. The He are together as one element, and then the last lo are together as their own element. So the magic is all in the middle L. Here you can use a cloner and create a count of 5 that will expand out. Now you can certainly do this with keyframes, but Im going to use the Signal plugin to drive all of this. You can just set your in and out points, and then I used a linear ease effect so the L would duplicate really fast and then just slowly ease in to place. Whats super great is now I can just duplicate my Signal settings and apply them to the he and just make tiny tweaks to make it match. The lo doesnt have to do anything, so the he and l will do all the work moving. Now the next trick is to also make the camera move to it re-centers the animation. Guess what, its just Signal again. Now you can try different ease settings, I found that exponential out what the right fit for this project. Creating the rainbow color effect This was this trickiest part to figure out on the fly. What I settled on was creating a Redshift material and then using a few nodes to make a rainbow ramp. In a ramp node, you can go to the ramp and create a color effect. I added a different color for each l and then just adjusted the gradient ramp based on where the final l location was. Then how do we project that onto our hello text? Well the easiest solution was to use this as a flat projection. In your Material Tag editor, go to projection and change it from UV Mapping (which is usually the default) and change it to flat. Finally you just adjust your material scale and move it forward in front of your text. Then its just aligning the colors on your text. Lighting your 3D text For finishing touches its all about the lighting. First Im going to drop in and HDRI, and for this exact project I used the Church Entrance HDRI you can find in the Studio app. Again, I will use Signal and just add a slight rotation to the HDRI while it animates on. This HDRI is doing most of the work for lighting, but Im going to add a Rim Light to catch the text from the back. Its going to add a little bit of bounce light inside of the L. Then I put in a top light to drive some more reflection off the top of the letters. To get it looking even better, I added a couple bounce card. It keeps you from having to add more lights, and with a real photo studio trick you are just redirecting the existing lights and sending it back towards your text.
