  • Gears of War: E-Day | Developer Interview | Unreal Engine

Watch this video to find out how UE5 helped The Coalition recapture the desperate “destroyed beauty” aesthetic of the original ‘Gears of War’ games for its latest installment of the franchise—while evolving gameplay, animation, and more.

Eagerly anticipated for a return to its dark, gritty survival-horror roots, ‘Gears of War: E-Day’ takes players back to Emergence Day, 14 years before the original game is set.

Featuring an absorbing narrative with classic cover-based combat enhanced by modern movement mechanics, destructible environments, and semi-open city block exploration with optional side objectives, the game is also notable as the first in the series that has been developed using Unreal Engine 5.

We caught up with Kate Rayner, Studio Technical Director at The Coalition, to explore how the team used UE5 to evolve the gameplay, environments, cinematics, animation, and beyond: https://epic.gm/dev-interviews-gears-e-day
