Throwing your shield at demons is the bread and butter of Doom: The Dark Ages. However, Wolf Statues are also valuable targets to aim your shield at. In each chapter of Doom: The Dark Ages, there are many secrets to discover. Maps may hide little toys in underground tunnels or Nightmare skins in platforms that seem impossible to reach. Finding all of them is not mandatory, but some rewards — like Gold, Rubies and, Wraithsones — are fundamental if you plan on upgrading your weapons. Wolf Statues can offer you these materials as rewards — but only if you can find them! Below, we’ll show you where to find all Wolf Statues we’ve found so far in Doom: The Dark Ages, plus the rewards you get from them. Where to find Wolf Statues in Doom: The Dark Ages Wolf Statues are guardians of unique treasures, and each of them are linked to other Wolf Statues, which are hidden around each level and will break if you throw your shield at them. The barrier protecting the item only disappears after all the statues in a given level are destroyed. You can know how many statues you must find by counting how many are around the barrier. To identify the ones you must break, just look for wolf statues that are glowing red. As you eliminate Wolf Statues around the map, the translucent statues around the barrier turn into stone. So far, we’ve found Wolf Statues in two levels in Doom: The Dark Ages: The Siege – Part 1 (Chapter 6) Ancestral Forge (Chapter 9) The Siege – Part 1 (Chapter 6)    There are three Wolf Statues in Chapter 6 guarding a Ruby, and while this map might be a little bit byzantine, finding all three statues is not too much trouble. To find the statues, turn right from the main gate. Go ahead for a while, destroy a massive tank and then look to your left. You will see, a little higher from where you are, the three translucent wolves around the Ruby. Now, the ones you need to break are considerably close. The first one is right beside the area where the Ruby is. You need to first kill all the enemies — which involves defeating a Vagary — in the area to disable the force field around it. The second statue is hidden inside a small cave next to the ruby as well. You can easily see the statue from where the Ruby is. The final statue is in the opposite direction from the Ruby. When facing the statue holding the Ruby, turn around and you will see the Wolf Statue.  Ancestral Forge (Chapter 9) While you try to make the Ancestral Forge work again, you can look for the three Wolf Statues hidden in Chapter 9. You will receive a Wraithstone once you find all of them, the only material that unlocks a weapon’s final upgrade. The Wraithstone and the three Wolf Statues are located on the left side of the map. You can find the first Wolf Statue by turning right to where the altar is. Before you even start looking for the second statue, you should get the Purple Key. To find it, you want to leave the main gate, turn right and head toward the red zone in this direction. You need to first defeat the leader in this zone, but once you’re done, you can look for the entrance to the corridor to the left side of the arena that will take you to the key. Break it with your shield and you can get the Purple Key. Go back to where you started in this chapter and you will find a Purple Gate. Open it with the key to find the second Wolf Statue.  Now, you can find the third and last statue by going to the opposite side of the map from where the Wraithstone is. You will find it in an area between the two remaining red zones. It is protected by some enemies, but killing them disables the barrier around it. But upon taking office, the Trump administration attempted to revoke that status for approximately 350,000 Venezuelans. A federal judge froze the administration’s effort in March while lawsuits proceeded.What’s the latest? The Supreme Court overturned the lower court’s freeze, ruling that deportations could begin — even while the cases are still in front of the courts.What’s next? The administration is now free to begin deporting Venezuelans who had been covered by the status, though the court’s order still allows individual immigrants to challenge their deportations or the loss of work permits. Trump also aims to revoke Temporary Protected Status for hundreds of thousands of other immigrants later this year.What does this mean for the immigrants? Venezuela is still in the midst of a humanitarian crisis, and deportations would mean a return to a country where work is scarce but suffering is not: More than 20 million people lack adequate access to food and medical care, according to Human Rights Watch.What does this mean for the balance of power? Federal judges have repeatedly checked Trump’s power by freezing his actions while they work their way through the judicial system. However, there are some issues. Here’s our review of McAfee Total Protection 2025. The software, which requires macOS 11 (Big Sur) or later to install and run, is available at several subscription points, the Essential plan retailing for $39.99/£39.99 for the first year and protecting up to five devices, renewing at a higher price of $159.99/£159.99 a year. McAfee doesn’t offer a free trial, and asks for your credit or debit card information, but cites a 30-day money-back guarantee instead.  Similar to its previous versions, McAfee Total Protection comes out swinging, complete with an easy download and installation process that prompts you to grant it full access to your Mac’s hard drive as well as low-level access to its fmpd, VShieldScanner, VShieldScanManager, and GenUtility system components. Once this is complete, the application’s tools are available via an icon in the macOS Menu Bar that can be quickly accessed on the fly.  Foundry There’s a fair amount worth liking with McAfee Total Protection 2025, and its bread and butter remains antiviral and antimalware protection, which the application handles admirably. There was almost nothing that could be put by the application’s Real-Time Protection feature, which also scans mounted external drives on the fly, and while malware can be pushed through and installed provided you disregard enough warnings, this feature dovetails well with macOS’s GateKeeper feature and does a good job of warning you as to suspect software. A Custom Scan feature allows for easy targeting and scanning of specific folders and local volumes, and a good level of customization allows you to dictate the standard behavior (such as quarantine, deletion, etc) of suspect files. Foundry The Secure VPN client functions as a good, if somewhat bare-bones VPN that allows you to choose a location, activate it, and either enable or disable the VPN feature given whatever network you may be on. The client itself functions well, even if its overall feature and customization options may be a bit slim for hardcore VPN road warriors.  Still, there’s work to be done. Perhaps the most worrying bug is the fact that my MacBook Pro’s performance became laggy after initially installing McAfee Total Protection 2025, and the lag didn’t cease until after I’d rebooted my Mac. From there, clicking on the Total Protection 2025 Menu Bar icon led to sporadic lag as well as a complete system freeze and crash that had to be rebooted from. The lag remained sporadic, but it seems to highlight a lack of attention to detail, such as antiviral scans stating they’ve removed suspect files, but failing to state what the file names were or where they were located without returning to the home screen and then pulling up the History window from there, which seems to add about four extra steps when a quick link off the scan result page would have done perfectly.  McAfee’s billing department seems happy to lead you towards annual payments. The ID Protection feature, which may be well-intended, comes across as an oddity wherein you have to fully commit to it, entering your credit card, bank account, tax ID, passport, national IDs, health IDs, email addresses, usernames, phone numbers, and date of birth to chase down and follow up on. This feels as if it’s something that’s coasting on its past laurels as opposed to creating something useful, and while there wasn’t much that got by it in terms of viruses and malware, competing applications are offering the entire functionality of Total Protection 2025 and doing it better. Sludge Vohaul! Sierra made the games of my childhood. Are they still fun to play? Get ready for some nostalgia. Nate Anderson – May 17, 2025 7:00 am | 14 Story text Size Small Standard Large Width * Standard Wide Links Standard Orange * Subscribers only   Learn more My Ars colleagues were kicking back at the Orbital HQ water cooler the other day, and—as gracefully aging gamers are wont to do—they began to reminisce about classic Sierra On-Line adventure games. I was a huge fan of these games in my youth, so I settled in for some hot buttered nostalgia. Would we remember the limited-palette joys of early King's Quest, Space Quest, or Quest for Glory titles? Would we branch out beyond games with "Quest" in their titles, seeking rarer fare like Freddy Pharkas: Frontier Pharmacist? What about the gothic stylings of The Colonel's Bequest or the voodoo-curious Gabriel Knight? Nope. The talk was of acorns. [Bleeping] acorns, in fact! The scene in question came from King's Quest III, where our hero Gwydion must acquire some exceptionally desiccated acorns to advance the plot. It sounds simple enough. As one walkthrough puts it, "Go east one screen and north one screen to the acorn tree. Try picking up acorns until you get some dry ones. Try various spots underneath the tree." Easy! And clear! Except it wasn't either one because the game rather notoriously won't always give you the acorns, even when you enter the right command. This led many gamers to believe they were in the wrong spot, when in reality, they just had to keep entering the "get acorns" command while moving pixel by pixel around the tree until the game finally supplied them. One of our staffers admitted to having purchased the King's Quest III hint book solely because of this "puzzle." (The hint book, which is now online, says that players should "move around" the particular oak tree in question because "you can only find the right kind of acorns in one spot.") This wasn't quite the "fun" I had remembered from these games, but as I cast my mind back, I dimly began to recall similar situations. Space Quest II: Vohaul's Revenge had been my first Sierra title, and after my brother and I spent weeks on the game only to get stuck and die repeatedly in some pitch-dark tunnels, we implored my dad to call Sierra's 1-900 pay hint line. He thought about it. I could see it pained him because he had never before (and never since!) called a 1-900 number in his life. In this case, the call cost a piratical 75 cents for the first minute and 50 cents for each additional minute. But after listening to us whine for several days straight, my dad decided that his sanity was worth the fee, and he called. Much like with the acorn example above, we had known what to do—we had just not done it to the game's rather exacting and sometimes obscure standards. The key was to use a glowing gem as a light source, which my brother and I had long understood. The problem was the text parser, which demanded that we "put gem in mouth" to use its light in the tunnels. There was no other place to put the gem, no other way to hold or attach it. (We tried them all.) No other attempts to use the light of this shining crystal, no matter how clear, well-intentioned, or succinctly expressed, would work. You put the gem in your mouth, or you died in the darkness. Returning from my reveries to the conversation at hand, I caught Ars Senior Editor Lee Hutchinson's cynical remark that these kinds of puzzles were "the only way to make 2–3 hours of 'game' last for months." This seemed rather shocking, almost offensive. How could one say such a thing about the games that colored my memories of childhood? So I decided to replay Space Quest II for the first time in 35 years in an attempt to defend my own past. Big mistake. We're not on Endor anymore, Dorothy. Play it again, Sam In my memory, the Space Quest series was filled with sharply written humor, clever puzzles, and enchanting art. But when I fired up the original version of the game, I found that only one of these was true. The art, despite its blockiness and limited colors, remained charming. As for the gameplay, the puzzles were not so much "clever" as "infuriating," "obvious," or (more often) "rather obscure." Finding the glowing gem discussed above requires you to swim into one small spot of a multi-screen river, with no indication in advance that anything of importance is in that exact location. Trying to "call" a hunter who has captured you does nothing… until you do it a second time. And the less said about trying to throw a puzzle at a Labian Terror Beast, typing out various word permutations while death bears down upon you, the better. The whole game was also filled with far more no-warning insta-deaths than I had remembered. On the opening screen, for instance, after your janitorial space-broom floats off into the cosmic ether, you can walk your character right off the edge of the orbital space station he is cleaning. The game doesn't stop you; indeed, it kills you and then mocks you for "an obvious lack of common sense." It then calls you a "wing nut" with an "inability to sustain life." Game over. The game's third screen, which features nothing more to do than simply walking around, will also kill you in at least two different ways. Walk into the room still wearing your spacesuit and your boss will come over and chew you out. Game over. If you manage to avoid that fate by changing into your indoor uniform first, it's comically easy to tap the wrong arrow key and fall off the room's completely guardrail-free elevator platform. Game over. Do NOT touch any part of this root monster. Get used to it because the game will kill you in so, so many ways: touching any single pixel of a root monster whose branches form a difficult maze; walking into a giant mushroom; stepping over an invisible pit in the ground; getting shot by a guard who zips in on a hovercraft; drowning in an underwater tunnel; getting swiped at by some kind of giant ape; not putting the glowing gem in your mouth; falling into acid; and many more. I used the word "insta-death" above, but the game is not even content with this. At one key point late in the game, a giant Aliens-style alien stalks the hallways, and if she finds you, she "kisses" you. But then she leaves! You are safe after all! Of course, if you have seen the films, you will recognize that you are not safe, but the game lets you go on for a bit before the alien's baby inevitably bursts from your chest, killing you. Game over. This is why the official hint book suggests that you "save your game a lot, especially when it seems that you're entering a dangerous area. That way, if you die, you don't have to retrace your steps much." Presumably, this was once considered entertaining. When it comes to the humor, most of it is broad. (When you are told to "say the word," you have to say "the word.") Sometimes it is condescending. ("You quickly glance around the room to see if anyone saw you blow it.") Or it might just be potty jokes. (Plungers, jock straps, toilet paper, alien bathrooms, and fouling one's trousers all make appearances.) My total gameplay time: a few hours. "By Grabthar's hammer!" I thought. "Lee was right!" When I admitted this to him, Lee told me that he had actually spent time learning to speedrun the Space Quest games during the pandemic. "According to my notes, a clean run of SQ2 in 'fast' mode—assuming good typing skills—takes about 20 minutes straight-up," he said. Yikes. What a fiendish plot! And yet The past was a different time. Computer memory was small, graphics capabilities were low, and computer games had emerged from the "let them live just long enough to encourage spending another quarter" arcade model. Mouse adoption took a while; text parsers made sense even though they created plenty of frustration. So yes—some of these games were a few hours of gameplay stretched out with insta-death, obscure puzzles, and the sheer amount of time it took just to walk across the game's various screens. (Seriously, "walking around" took a ridiculous amount of the game's playtime, especially when a puzzle made you backtrack three screens, type some command, and then return.) Let's get off this rock. Judged by current standards, the Sierra games are no longer what I would play for fun. All the same, I loved them. They introduced me to the joy of exploring virtual worlds and to the power of evocative artwork. I went into space, into fairy tales, and into the past, and I did so while finding the games' humor humorous and their plotlines compelling. ("An army of life insurance salesmen?" I thought at the time. "Hilarious and brilliant!") If the games can feel a bit arbitrary or vexing today, my child-self's love of repetition was able to treat them as engaging challenges rather than "unfair" design. Replaying Space Quest II, encountering the half-remembered jokes and visual designs, brought back these memories. The novelist Thomas Wolfe knew that you can't go home again, and it was probably inevitable that the game would feel dated to me now. But playing it again did take me back to that time before the Internet, when not even hint lines, insta-death, and EGA graphics could dampen the wonder of the new worlds computers were capable of showing us. Literal bathroom humor. Space Quest II, along with several other Sierra titles, is freely and legally available online at sarien.net—though I found many, many glitches in the implementation. For a designer obsessed with detail, it’s a fantasy to find a friend, much less a client, with the enthusiasm and stamina to sustain an 80-email thread about one fabric trim. But this was the level of unrushed, joyful consideration that ELLE Decor A-List designer Nicholas Obeid shared with homeowner Deirdre Brodie while working on her historic townhouse in Albany, New York. After completing a gut renovation on the 1875 home, which abuts the city’s 90-acre Washington Park, Brodie and her husband Dan Odabashian tapped Obeid to create some enchanting cohesion among the home’s three floors, and to delight in the details—and emails—alongside her.William Jess LairdSage-green walls create a relaxed mood in the dining room, where a vintage burlwood table is surrounded by French Art Deco chairs with upholstery in Zak + Fox fabrics. Antique rug from Upstate Rug Supply.It was important to Brodie, an Albany native who has lived within the same square mile for two decades, to establish a forever home for her and her husband that was at once welcoming and exciting and that turned the spotlight on local artisanship. Together, designer and client saw the home’s three 19-foot-wide stories as the chapters of a book: a vibrant first floor for hosting and community; a serene second floor for the primary suite, outfitted in soothing brown tones; and a top floor with two guest rooms to suit different design moods. (Brodie says invited couples sometimes happily opt to split up to better relish their preferred quarters.)The stairwell, with original steps dating back to the late 19th century, serves as the book’s binding. A mural composed of large-scale Greek keys, applied by hand using custom-engineered rollers by local artist Nina Stanley, ties the landings together. “It’s a representation of how we wanted the floors to communicate to each other,” says Obeid, who pulled from classical elements in the architecture to create a unifying iconography that draws on Greek and Egyptian motifs, as well as motifs by the Art Deco rug designer Ivan da Silva Bruhns. “The pattern is very classic, but seen in a fresh way,” he says.William Jess LairdIn the stair hall the custom mural features classical motifs and was hand-painted by Nina Stanley.Obeid drew on the strict yet expressive forms of his own furniture line to inform the artful geometries that repeat throughout the interior. “At two feet or 20 feet, every view is totally interesting,” Brodie says. Prized rugs, artworks, and two antique Fortuny chandeliers served as creative fodder for Obeid, who prioritized working with pieces purchased by Brodie’s mother at estate sales and on Facebook Marketplace, transforming them into new family heirlooms. “He was so generous in honoring that,” Brodie says. “My mother’s sense of how beautiful hospitality could be is what made me excited to have the opportunity to do this house.”Other bits of sentimental flotsam and jetsam were taken in decorative stride, like a box of vintage orange Brunschwig & Fils wallpaper that Brodie rescued from an architectural parts warehouse. When she brought the dusty box of “crazy orange” (her term—his was “bananas”) wallpaper to Obeid, she recalls him saying, “This is not exactly my comfort zone, but that’s why I want to do it.” The saturated hue appears in a guest room, tempered with tasseled green curtains in a custom Rule of Three hand-marbled -malachite-like silk.Obeid anchored the space with a chaise longue covered in a striped velvet by Misia, rescued and revived from a cat-ravaged past in storage. But the focal point of the room is a set of seven bespoke decorative plates by the artist Shane Gabier, designed to echo the wallpaper in tones of olive green, butter yellow, and an ultra-classic Parisian blue checkerboard.
