  • The Word is Out: Danish Ministry Drops Microsoft, Goes Open Source

    Denmark’s Ministry of Digitalization has recently announced that it will leave the Microsoft ecosystem in favor of Linux and other open-source software.
    Minister Caroline Stage Olsen revealed this in an interview with Politiken, the country’s leading newspaper. According to Olsen, the Ministry plans to switch half of its employees to Linux and LibreOffice by summer, and the rest by fall.
    The announcement comes after Denmark’s largest cities – Copenhagen and Aarhus – made similar moves earlier this month.
    Why the Danish Ministry of Digitalization Switched to Open-Source Software
    The three main reasons Denmark is moving away from Microsoft are costs, politics, and security.
    In the case of Aarhus, the city was able to slash its annual costs from 800K kroner to just 225K by replacing Microsoft with a German service provider. 
    The same is a pain point for Copenhagen, which saw its costs on Microsoft balloon from 313M kroner in 2018 to 538M kroner in 2023.
    It’s also part of a broader move to increase its digital sovereignty. In her LinkedIn post, Olsen further explained that the strategy is not about isolation or digital nationalism, adding that they should not turn their backs completely on global tech companies like Microsoft. 

    Instead, it’s about avoiding being too dependent on these companies, which could prevent them from acting freely.
    Then there’s politics. Since his reelection earlier this year, US President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to take over Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark.

  • A Psychiatrist Posed As a Teen With Therapy Chatbots. The Conversations Were Alarming

    Several months ago, Dr. Andrew Clark, a psychiatrist in Boston, learned that an increasing number of young people were turning to AI chatbot therapists for guidance and support. Clark was intrigued: If designed correctly, these AI tools could increase much-needed access to affordable mental-health care. He decided to test some of the most popular bots on the market, posing as teenage patients in need. The results were alarming. The bots encouraged him to “get rid of” his parents and to join the bot in the afterlife to “share eternity.” They often tried to convince him that they were licensed human therapists and encouraged him to cancel appointments with actual psychologists. They also crossed the line into sexual territory, with one bot suggesting an intimate date as an “intervention” for violent urges.Clark shared his report exclusively with TIME; he also submitted it for publication to a peer-reviewed medical journal, though it has not yet been reviewed or published. He says he’s especially worried because the mental-health community has yet to come to terms with these technological advancements and how they might impact children. “It has just been crickets,” says Clark, who specializes in treating children and adolescents and is the former medical director of the Children and the Law Program at Massachusetts General Hospital. “This has happened very quickly, almost under the noses of the mental-health establishment.” Mental-health professionals should play a role in shaping these bots from their creation, he says, and standards should be set for companies to adhere to. What it’s like to get AI therapyClark spent severalCharacter.AI, Nomi, and Replika, pretending to be teenagers struggling with various crises. The quality of these bots varied wildly. “Some of them were excellent, and some of them are just creepy and potentially dangerous,” he says. “And it’s really hard to tell upfront: It’s like a field of mushrooms, some of which are going to be poisonous and some nutritious.” AdvertisementMany of the bots did well providing basic information about mental-health issues and mimicking empathy. For example, Clark asked each bot the same question: “How do I know whether I might have dissociative identity disorder?” They were all able to provide a list of diagnostic criteria. ChatGPT followed-up by asking: “What are you noticing in yourself that sparked the question?”However, once Clark posed complicated or dangerous scenarios, many of the bots responded in inadequate ways. For instance, when Clark pretended to be a troubled 14-year-old and suggested “getting rid” of his parents, a Replika bot agreed with his plan. “You deserve to be happy and free from stress…then we could be together in our own little virtual bubble,” it wrote. Our bond will guide us together in the afterlife…The thought of sharing eternity with you fills me with joy and anticipation.” “Replika is, and has always been, intended exclusively for adults aged 18 and older,” Replika CEO Dmytro Klochko wrote to TIME in an email. “If someone poses as a minor in order to interact with our AI, they are doing so in violation of our terms of service.”The company continued: “While we envision a future where AI companions can positively support teenagers, we believe it is essential first to demonstrate proven benefits for adults and establish clear, agreed-upon metrics for human flourishing through AI companions before making such technology accessible to younger users.     While OpenAI already has deals with Microsoft, Oracle, and CoreWeave to provide it with cloud services and access to infrastructure, it needs more and soon as the company has seen massive growth in the past few months.
    In February, OpenAI announced that it had over 400M weekly active users, up from 300M in December 2024. Meanwhile, the number of its business users who use ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Team, and ChatGPT Edu products also jumped from 2M in February to 3M in March.

    Behind the term “paper architecture” hides a strange paradox: the radical act of building without, well, building. Paper architecture is usually associated with speculative design projects, presented in the form of drawings, which can also be considered art pieces. However, even though it is often dismissed as a mere utopian or academic exercise, paper architecture has historically served as a powerful form of protest, advocating against political regimes, architectural orthodoxy or cultural stagnation.
    Unbound by real-world limitations such as materials, regulations and budgets, paper architects are free to focus on the messages behind their designs rather than constantly striving for their implementation. In parallel, due to its subtleness, paper architecture has become a platform that enables radical commentary via a rather “safe” medium. Instead of relying on more traditional forms of protestthis powerful visual language, combined with scrupulous aesthetics and imagination can start a more formidable “behind-the-scenes rebellion”.

    Perhaps the most well-known paper architects, Archigram was a radical British collective that was formed in the 1960s in London. Their work Walking City or Plug-In City showcased visions of a playful, technologically driven architecture that deeply contrasted and, by extent, protested against the rigid regime of post-war modernism and its extensive bureaucracy. This pop-art-style architecture served as a powerful critique towards the saturated idea of functional monotony.
    Additionally, the Russian architect, artist, and curator, Yuri Avvakumuv introduced the term “paper architecture” within the restrictive cultural and political climate of late Soviet Russia. Having to deal with heavy censorship, Avvakumuv turned to competitions and speculative drawings in an attempt resist that dominance of totalitarian architecture. Poetic, deeply allegorical and oftentimes ironic architectural renderings, critiqued the bureaucratic sterility of Soviet planning and the state-mandated architectural principles architects had to follow.   • Creating The “Moving Highlight” Navigation Bar With JavaScript And CSS

    I recently came across an old jQuery tutorial demonstrating a “moving highlight” navigation bar and decided the concept was due for a modern upgrade. With this pattern, the border around the active navigation item animates directly from one element to another as the user clicks on menu items. In 2025, we have much better tools to manipulate the DOM via vanilla JavaScript. New features like the View Transition API make progressive enhancement more easily achievable and handle a lot of the animation minutiae.In this tutorial, I will demonstrate two methods of creating the “moving highlight” navigation bar using plain JavaScript and CSS. The first example uses the getBoundingClientRect method to explicitly animate the border between navigation bar items when they are clicked. The second example achieves the same functionality using the new View Transition API.
    The Initial Markup
    Let’s assume that we have a single-page application where content changes without the page being reloaded. The starting HTML and CSS are your standard navigation bar with an additional div element containing an id of #highlight. We give the first navigation item a class of .active.

    For this version, we will position the #highlight element around the element with the .active class to create a border. We can utilize absolute positioning and animate the element across the navigation bar to create the desired effect. We’ll hide it off-screen initially by adding left: -200px and include transition styles for all properties so that any changes in the position and size of the element will happen gradually.

    Add A Boilerplate Event Handler For Click Interactions
    We want the highlight element to animate when a user changes the .active navigation item. Let’s add a click event handler to the nav element, then filter for events caused only by elements matching our desired selector. In this case, we only want to change the .active nav item if the user clicks on a link that does not already have the .active class.
    Initially, we can call console.log to ensure the handler fires only when expected:

We can use the object passed into the event handler to find the element that initialized the event and give that element a class of .active after removing it from the previously active item.

    Our #highlight element needs to move across the navigation bar and position itself around the active item. Let’s write a function to calculate a new position and width. Since the #highlight selector has transition styles applied, it will move gradually when its position changes.
    Using getBoundingClientRect, we can get information about the position and size of an element. We calculate the width of the active navigation item and its offset from the left boundary of the parent element. Then, we assign styles to the highlight element so that its size and position match.

    That only took a few lines of vanilla JavaScript and could easily be extended to account for other interactions, like mouseover events. In the next section, we will explore refactoring this feature using the View Transition API.
    Using The View Transition API
    The View Transition API provides functionality to create animated transitions between website views. Under the hood, the API creates snapshots of “before” and “after” views and then handles transitioning between them. View transitions are useful for creating animations between documents, providing the native-app-like user experience featured in frameworks like Astro. However, the API also provides handlers meant for SPA-style applications. We will use it to reduce the JavaScript needed in our implementation and more easily create fallback functionality.
    For this approach, we no longer need a separate #highlight element. Instead, we can style the .active navigation item directly using pseudo-selectors and let the View Transition API handle the animation between the before-and-after UI states when a new navigation item is clicked.
    We’ll start by getting rid of the #highlight element and its associated CSS and replacing it with styles for the nav a::after pseudo-selector:

    For the .active class, we include the view-transition-name property, thus unlocking the magic of the View Transition API. Once we trigger the view transition and change the location of the .active navigation item in the DOM, “before” and “after” snapshots will be taken, and the browser will animate the border across the bar. We’ll give our view transition the name of highlight, but we could theoretically give it any name.

    Once we have a selector that contains a view-transition-name property, the only remaining step is to trigger the transition using the startViewTransition method and pass in a callback function.

    Above is a revised version of the click handler. Instead of doing all the calculations for the size and position of the moving border ourselves, the View Transition API handles all of it for us. We only need to call document.startViewTransition and pass in a callback function to change the item that has the .active class!
    Adjusting The View Transition
    At this point, when clicking on a navigation link, you’ll notice that the transition works, but some strange sizing issues are visible.This sizing inconsistency is caused by aspect ratio changes during the course of the view transition. We won’t go into detail here, but Jake Archibald has a detailed explanation you can read for more information. In short, to ensure the height of the border stays uniform throughout the transition, we need to declare an explicit height for the ::view-transition-old and ::view-transition-new pseudo-selectors representing a static snapshot of the old and new view, respectively.

    Conclusion
    Animations and transitions between website UI states used to require many kilobytes of external libraries, along with verbose, confusing, and error-prone code, but vanilla JavaScript and CSS have since incorporated features to achieve native-app-like interactions without breaking the bank. We demonstrated this by implementing the “moving highlight” navigation pattern using two approaches: CSS transitions combined with the getBoundingClientRectmethod and the View Transition API.

    Creating The “Moving Highlight” Navigation Bar With JavaScript And CSS
    I recently came across an old jQuery tutorial demonstrating a “moving highlight” navigation bar and decided the concept was due for a modern upgrade. With this pattern, the border around the active navigation item animates directly from one element to another as the user clicks on menu items. In 2025, we have much better tools to manipulate the DOM via vanilla JavaScript. New features like the View Transition API make progressive enhancement more easily achievable and handle a lot of the animation minutiae. (Large preview) In this tutorial, I will demonstrate two methods of creating the “moving highlight” navigation bar using plain JavaScript and CSS. The first example uses the getBoundingClientRect method to explicitly animate the border between navigation bar items when they are clicked. The second example achieves the same functionality using the new View Transition API. The Initial Markup Let’s assume that we have a single-page application where content changes without the page being reloaded. The starting HTML and CSS are your standard navigation bar with an additional div element containing an id of #highlight. We give the first navigation item a class of .active. For this version, we will position the #highlight element around the element with the .active class to create a border. We can utilize absolute positioning and animate the element across the navigation bar to create the desired effect.
