• Micro Center nerd store fills the Fry’s vacuum with its return to Silicon Valley

Silicon Valley nerds have been lonelier since Fry’s Electronics shut down in February 2021 in the midst of the pandemic. The electronics store chain was an embodiment of the valley’s tech roots.
But Micro Center, an electronics retailer from Ohio, has opened its 29th store in Santa Clara, California. And so the nerd kingdom has returned. I see this as a big deal, following up on the opening of the Nintendo store — the second in the country after New York — in San Francisco earlier this month. After years of bad economic news, it’s nice to see signs that the Bay Area is coming back.
No. To answer your question, nerds cannot live at the Micro Center store.
But this isn’t just any store. It’s a symbol — a sign that shows tech still has a physical presence in Silicon Valley, in addition to places like the Buck’s Restaurant, the Denny’s where Nvidia started, the Intel Museum, the Computer History Museum, the California Academy of Sciences and the Tech Museum of Innovation. Other historic hangouts for techies like Walker’s Wagon Wheel, Atari’s headquarters, Lion & Compass — even Circuit City — have long since closed. But hey, we’ve got the Micro Center store, and the Apple spaceship is not that far away.
The grand opening week has been going well and I got a tour of the superstore from Dan Ackerman, a veteran tech journalist who is editor-in-chief at Micro Center News. As I walked into the place, Ackerman was finishing a chat with iFixit, a tech repair publication which has its own space for podcasts inside the store. That was unexpected, as I’ve never seen a store embrace social media in such a way.
Can you stump the geniuses at the Knowledge Bar at Micro Center?
Nearby was the Knowledge Bar, where you can get all your tech questions answered — much like the Genius Bars in Apple Stores. And there were repair tables out in the open.
There are a lot of things for tech enthusiasts can like about Micro Center. First, it’s not as sprawling as Fry’s, which had zany themes like ancient Egypt and a weird mix of electronics goods as well as household appliances, cosmetics, magazines and tons of snack foods.. Fry’s was a store that stereotyped nerds and Silicon Valley, which also had its own HBO television show that carried on the stereotypes.
Nvidia’s latest RTX 50 Series GPUs were in stock at Micro Center.
The Micro Center store, by contrast, is smaller at 40,000 square feet and stocked with many more practical nerd items. For the grand opening, this store had the very practical product of more than 4,000 graphics processing unitsin stock from Nvidiaand AMD, Ackerman told me. Some of those graphics cards cost as much as Not to be outdone. AMD has a row of GPUs at Micro Center too.
“There were people waiting to get to the GPUs,” Ackerman said.
On display was a gold-plated graphics card that was being auctioned off for charity. It was signed by Jensen Huang, Nvidia CEO.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang signed this GPU being auctioned for charity at Micro Center.
“I joke that whoever wins the bid should get a Jensen leather jacket as well,” said Ackerman.
And this Micro Center store has a good locationthat is just a six-minute drive from Apple’s worldwide headquarters anda one-minute walk from the Korean Hair Salon.
Micro Center had a previous store in Silicon Valley, near Intel’s headquarters in Santa Clara. But that store close in 2012 because the company couldn’t negotiate better terms with the landlord. For its return to the Bay Area, Micro Center bided its time and came back at a time when many other retail chains were failing. It proves that the once proud region — the birthplace of electronics — still merits its own electronics store.
You can buy dyes for liquid-cooled tubes at Micro Center.
Sure, we have Target, Best Buy and Walmart selling lots of electronics gear. But there’s nothing like the Akihabara electronics district in Japan, which is full of multi-story electronics stores and gaming arcades.
But this store is loaded with today’s modern top gear, like AI PCs, Ubiquity home networking gear, and dyes for multi-colored water-cooling systems. Vendors like Razer and Logitech had their own sections. Ackerman was pleased to show me the USB-C to USB-A adapter in stock, among many obscure items. And he showed me the inventory machine that could rotate its stock of 3D-printing filaments and give you the exact SKU that you scanned with a bar code.
Tech hobbyists can find their love at Micro Center.
“That’s super fun. I call it Mr. Filaments,” Ackerman said of the inventory robot.
There’s a section for hobbyists who like single-board computing and DIY projects. There’s a set of video, audio and digital content creation tools for content creators. All told, there are more than 20,000 products and over 100 tech experts who can help. It even has the numbered cashier locations where you can check out — the same kind of checkout stands that Fry’s had.

Customers can receive authorized computer service for brands like Apple, Dell, and HP, benefiting from same-day diagnostics and repairs, thanks to over 3,000 parts on hand through partnerships with leading OEMs. I only wish it had a help desk for Comcast.
Micro Center has gear to entertain geeks.
Micro Center started in 1979 in Columbus, Ohio. It’s a surprise there aren’t more nerd stores, given how ubiquitous tech is around the world these days.
But Ackerman said, “These guys are really doing it right, picking and choosing, finding the right cities, finding the right locations. That’s why Charlotte is great. Miami is a big tech hub, especially for health tech. And we’re literally five minutes away from Apple headquarters and plenty of other places. People from HP and Nvidia and other companies are coming in today to hang out.”
“Even though this store is big, the CEOis really into curation, making sure it’s the right mix of stuff. He’s making sure it doesn’t go too far afield. So you’re not going to come in here and find, you know, hair dryers or lawncare equipment,” Ackerman said. “You’re going to find computer and home entertainment stuff, and DIY gear. There are components, just like in a Radio Shack, that hobbyists care about.”
Dan Ackerman knows how to install a TV on your wall.
As for the Micro Center News, Ackerman told me he has around 10 regular contributors and 20 more freelancers writing gadget reviews and other stories about tech gear. It is a kind of refuge for that vanishing breed of professional tech journalists. No wonder I was so nostalgic visiting Micro Center.

Nacon, new custodians of the WRC series, has gotten into the sim racing game with a new direct drive racing wheel and accessories under RevoSim branding it announced last year.
The wheel base, rim, load cell brake and accelerator form the RS Pure bundle, which looks to compete with the likes of the Fanatec Gran Turismo DD Pro, Moza R9 V3 and Thrustmaster T598 at a upper-mid price point of £699. We went hands-on with the bundle at a recent press event in Paris and found it had some merit, though the direct drivespace has become increasingly competitive over the years with the likes of Logitech and Turtle Beach joining the fray over the last couple of years.
As well as the obligatory starter bundle of wheel rim, wheel base and pedals, there are a number of accessories, including a hybrid shifter that supports both sequential and h-pattern options, a clutch pedal add-on and a load cell handbrake for navigating tighter turns.
The wheel base itself has 9Nm of torque, which is a touch more than the Turtle Beach VelocityOne Race's 7.2Nm, although slightly behind the Logitech Pro Racing Wheel's 11nm of force. In addition, the rim itself is on a quick release, so it can easily be swapped out with the other options in the range - though third-party rims aren't supported as is sometimes the case.

Here is a closer look at the pedal set.

The pedal set is in steel and brushed aluminium for a solid construction, coming equipped with a 100kg load cell sensor for precise input. You can also choose how heavy, or light, you wish the brake to be with colour-coded elastomers supplied with the kit.
I tested out the RS in a few different configurations at the Paris event, starting with a desk setup and a round rally-style rim in WRC Generations. That outing revealed some small issues with the pedals' ability to grip onto carpet, as I found they had a tendency to slide under harsh braking as I clung onto dear life at the mercy of a Group B Peugeot 205 T16.
The force feedback was strong and informative, picking out the nuances of a rally stage with its hidden dips and crests, while pedal inputs were strong, although there was perhaps a little too much weight to the force feedback for my liking. I felt unable to flick the car into corners on a Monte Carlo rally stage as I wished to, although if the feedback wasn't necessarily set to be so high, this would have come easier. For the most part, though, I enjoyed my time with it, and the unit felt responsive with accurate feedback and a pleasant feel in-hand.
I also used the bundle in a sim-racing cockpit, this time in F1 24 taking a few laps around spa. The heavier load cell brake pedal typical of F1 racing took some getting used to, requiring a lot more force to push the brake down all the way than I anticipated. However, I can certainly see the appeal of having such a heavy feel, so you can dial in advanced techniques such as trail braking. My lap times around Spa weren't necessarily the best on the day, but I could still feel the edges of kerbs and the car's movement to a good degree. There isn't a more Formula-style rim available just yet, but I hope that Nacon plans to add it for folks who want to go full-on with the immersion. It can make a bit of difference.

And this is the main basis of the 'starter kit' as it were.

General build quality from my initial impressions also seems excellent for the price point Nacon is targeting, with an all-metal wheel base alongside a metal wheel and plush synthetic leather rim. The main rims also have a good selection of buttons, and you can even control presets, force feedback and input mapping in an associated smartphone app.
Compatibility is purely for Windows at the moment, although I heard rumblings at the event that Nacon was talking to Xbox and PlayStation for console compatibility. Nothing seems to have come from that yet, so I wouldn't bank on it being available any time soon - and it may come via new hardware rather than a software update.
For what's on offer here, the £699 price tag for the complete bundle including rim, base and pedals is reasonably compelling - though we'll wait for our full review to deliver a final verdict on a wider range of racing scenarios, software support and the wider ecosystem.

  • Logitech gears up for MX Master 4 launch

Logitech hasn’t officially launched the successor to the MX Master 3S, a.k.a. my favorite mouse ever, but it might be close.
The company recently submitted documentation for Bluetooth certification in Brazil, just as anteaser appeared on its official Instagram.

As reported by Brazilian tech site Tecnoblog, the MX Master 4, listed under model number MR0118, has just passed certification by Anatel, Brazil’s telecom regulator and local equivalent of the FCC.
The approval was granted on May 9, and was required due to the device’s Bluetooth connectivity. As such, it falls under the regulator’s “restricted radiation transceivers” category.
    Whoops!
The certification documents didn’t include product images, but Logitech may have taken care of that themselves: a promotional image briefly popped up on the company’s feed and, naturally, it immediately ended up on Reddit before being taken down following a legal request. Which is why we’re only linking to it, as we’re not exactly eager to get acquainted with their lawyers.
Based on the leaked image, the changes seem subtle but noticeable. The side scroll wheel appears to have been nudged slightly forward and upward, while the primary click buttons now take up more space, instead of ceding ground to the Magspeed wheel base.
While the MX line is best known for high-end productivity use, especially among creatives and coders, its customization, gesture controls and multi-device pairing make it equally appealing for more casual use and even some light gaming.
Logitech hasn’t made any public announcements yet, but with certification out of the way and marketing assets already in place, it’s safe to assume the MX Master 4 launch is imminent. And I’m so here for it.

The Asus ROG Ally handheld gaming PC is real, not an April Fools’ joke

No fooling — but no specs or price, either.

    www.theverge.com

The ROG Ally has a seven-inch 16:9 display with 1920 x 1080 resolution, 500 nits of brightness, and a 120HZ refresh rate, compared to the Steam Deck specs, which are listed as a seven-inch 16:10 display at 1280 x 800 resolution, 400 nits of brightness, and a 60Hz refresh rate.

I want more of these, but they need to think about adding alternative control interfaces built into the system. Maybenot a whole touch pad but maybe a nipple and some back buttons. Plus it is is ROG, you know it will cost 2 souls and a leg

Seems like it'll be pricey as hell but I do like that it has a 16:9 display, Windows with good looking dashboard for all your launchers, and how quiet it is. I just want that eGPU connector, or something similar to it, on the next Steam Deck.

Dave2D says it's apparently very appealing price point.

However my biggest question is the release date because we keep seeing these handhelds with no release dates and being kept shown at performance expos all the time. Sick and tired of that nonsense.

Dave doesn't know the price point. He's just assuming because they said it would be available at Best Buy and that they don't do low volume products so ASUS expects it to sell well, which means it likely has an appealing price point. I don't know though...

Windows, ick. I've used Armoury Crate enough on my PC to know that the software side of things, at least what's pre-installed on the device, is going to be ass.

I don't get why everyone seems to hate the Deck having an 800p screen. That's turned out to be a lifesaver for me in some games with weird resolutions that can't scale to 720p or 1080p well, like Rainworld.

However, in our experience, they've relied on an AMD 6800U chipset instead of a custom design and generally lack the right combination of horsepower and efficiency that we want to see from handheld gaming machines.

I swear the Verge reporter doesn't understand how crippled is the Steam Deck CPU for having 4 cores only when CPU matters a ton more in low resolutions.

AMD doesn't do custom unless you are going to buy millions, but then again, it's the iVerge.

And you are right, it's hard to get more than 60fps in recent titles even on 6800U with 45W TDP

I prefer asymmetrical sticks on my controllers, but on handhelds where the sides are vertical straight up and down, they should not be offset due to where your thumbs land. The switch cramps my hand having to contort my thumb and rotate my hand to hit the sticks. It is better with and ergonomic attachment but it is not the most convenient.

ROG XG Mobile eGPU? That's interesting, seeing as Oculink on the Win Max 2 allows you to have only a 10% performance penalty vs a full desktop for external using PCIe Gen4 x4.

This will make it interesting. Unfortunately Destiny 2 sucks ass on anything less than 10" >.<

If the 120Hz display is VRR , that's a gamechanger. Framerates lower than 60 will benefit immensely. The Deck needs this too.

It's like all these companies that are big enough to somewhat compete saw the Deck success and then made hand held. Logitech launches a cloud one, Razer launches a ARM one a year after the Deck and now Asus seems to think they have to one up the Deck everywhereand will result in pricing themselves out of the market.

These feel like a bunch of specs thrown at a wall - a screen like that will chew up battery in no time, and the hardware won't be there to back it up.

This is what I really appreciated about the Steam Deck - it seemed thought out and that all the hardware was designed for a certain performance level.

It's good to see more products in this space, but I'm just never going to buy a PC handheld that doesn't have touchpads. It's frustrating that only Valve is making a handheld that can actually play the games I want to play.

Will come down to price of course. There's countless Windows handhelds around these days - many objectively better than the Deck, but none that can match it's price point.

On that note, yes the 1080p screen is appealing for a handheld. I have a Deck, but I expressly use my Ayn Odin Lite for things like Game Pass, GFN, or even watching anime, because it can push double the pixels with ease. Then again, it's Android so it has battery for days.

bad ergonomics - shallow grip, menu buttons out of reach. Single USB port!
rocker dpad - why copy the 360s terrible dpad
dual fans plus higher refresh/resolution/brightness screen - huge battery drain
Windows instead of SteamOS - no suspend + license fee

Looks interesting, and I'm always happy to see new entrants into this space, as it gives people more options. Specifically, if they are selling this in B&M retail stores, it'll open the market to people who aren't comfortable ordering a Steam Deck, or getting a Chinese/HK manufactured device of unknown quality. The resolution and refresh rates sound "ambitious", but if it's anything like the GPD I have, you'll be able to knock the refresh rate down to 40hz, and do the usual FSR resolution scaling to save on performance. I'd be surprised if a demanding game lasted more than 2 hours on a single charge though - that just seems to be the norm with the current tech, but its enough for a commute, or a long train journey if you are happy playing 2D stuff.

As for it using windows, ehhh, It's the easiest way forward right now. Yes it takes a while to boot or come out of standby compared to SteamOS, and the UI kinda sucks on a small screen, but it has zero compatibility issues and allows every current launcher straight out of the box, so you get every advantage of a full PC with only a couple minor downsides.

My only negative with what I've seen so far, is the size. It's only a shave smaller than the Steam Deck, which is already a chunky bugger. I'd have liked it to be more like the GPD Win 4. Oh well.

Adaptive refresh rate solves that issue and you can cap it if you don't like the energy cost. At least on mobiles, and assumedly for this device as well since you can do the same on Deck.

This is what I really appreciated about the Steam Deck - it seemed thought out and that all the hardware was designed for a certain performance level.  Jon of the Wired Member Oct 25, 2017 397 It's good to see more products in this space, but I'm just never going to buy a PC handheld that doesn't have touchpads. It's frustrating that only Valve is making a handheld that can actually play the games I want to play.   Kline AVALANCHE Member Sep 15, 2022 524 Will come down to price of course. Remeran Member Nov 27, 2018 4,129 Oh windows based, that mean native gamepass gaming? Oh well.  DjDeathCool Member Oct 28, 2017 2,869 Bismarck, ND neoak said: It's about battery life man. Never said it wasn't nice. Click to expand... Click to shrink... On that note, yes the 1080p screen is appealing for a handheld. I have a Deck, but I expressly use my Ayn Odin Lite for things like Game Pass, GFN, or even watching anime, because it can push double the pixels with ease. Then again, it's Android so it has battery for days.  Remeran Member Nov 27, 2018 4,129 Oh windows based, that mean native gamepass gaming? Specifically, if they are selling this in B&M retail stores, it'll open the market to people who aren't comfortable ordering a Steam Deck (for whatever reason), or getting a Chinese/HK manufactured device of unknown quality. (I have a GPD device and think its awesome) The resolution and refresh rates sound "ambitious", but if it's anything like the GPD I have, you'll be able to knock the refresh rate down to 40hz, and do the usual FSR resolution scaling to save on performance. Oh well.  DjDeathCool Member Oct 28, 2017 2,869 Bismarck, ND neoak said: It's about battery life man. Never said it wasn't nice. Click to expand... Click to shrink... Adaptive refresh rate solves that issue and you can cap it if you don't like the energy cost. At least on mobiles, and assumedly for this device as well since you can do the same on Deck.

You’ll get crisp, colorful 1080p video and surprisingly sharp night vision, which is great for checking on your porch or driveway after dark. It even sends alerts for people, animals, or vehicles. As our expert John R. Delaney puts it in our 2021 Nest Cam review, “If you’re in the market for a security camera that installs in minutes and offers a good selection of features—particularly if you already use other Nest Devices and/or Google Assistant—put the Nest Cam on your short list." It earned an “Excellent,” as does today's near $50 discount.Robot Vacuum DealsThe iRobot Roomba Combo j7+ is a versatile robot vacuum and mop that effectively cleans various surfaces without wetting carpets, thanks to its retractable mop. It excels at both vacuuming and mopping, with features like AI-powered obstacle avoidance and a pet waste-avoidance guarantee. Ideal for homes with mixed flooring, it offers convenient app controls, auto-emptying, and voice command integration. In our Roomba Combo j7+ review, our expert Angela Moscaritolo said in 2023, "If you have a mix of hard flooring and carpets at home, the Roomba Combo j7+ is worth it." With the $236 discount, it's a steal!Monitor DealsThe 43-inch Samsung Odyssey Neo G7 monitor feels like you dropped a living-room TV on your desk, only for shooters instead of sitcoms. As Zackery Cuevas notes, “Indeed, for the most part, it’s an impressive screen with vibrant mini LED backlighting.” The picture smacks you with mini-LED punch, deep contrast, and a 144 Hz refresh that keeps Valorant razor-smooth while AMD FreeSync stomps tearing. Input lag is practically invisible at around 4 ms. Cloud-leaning Gaming Hub is a cool bonus for quick Xbox Pass sessions. Therefore, it earned a “Good” rating in our 2023 Odyssey Neo G7 review. But a $225 discount qualifies this as a great deal!Game Console DealsAs our lead analyst, Will Greenwald, said in 2023, “The refined PS5 remains a top-tier console.” This PlayStation 5 Disc Console Slim fits right into your living room, especially if you're short on space. It has a big 1TB drive to store more of your favorite titles, with the popular Astro Bot game already included. Whether you’re diving into the latest blockbusters or streaming classic shows, you'll find everything runs smoothly. The streamlined design makes it a conversation piece, too. It’s also simpler to place horizontally than before. That’s why it got an “Excellent” rating in our PS5 Slim review, and it’s even an Editors’ Choice winner, so you know you’re getting a standout system that handles your entertainment needs without any hassle, now for $110 less.Photo Printer DealsIf you’re itching to take photos from your phone and stick them on the fridge, the Instax Link Wide makes it ridiculously easy, especially with this $50 price cut. Pair over Bluetooth, drop a shot into the app, add a collage frame or goofy sticker, and in half a minute, a wide-format print pops out. The printed colors punch hard, and the gloss finish screams retro cool. As our lead analyst Jim Fisher says, “If you're tired of just looking at photos on your phone's screen, or just yearn for the days of Polaroid snapshots, this instant film printer might be the right remedy.” Consumables aren’t cheap, but for scrapbooks, party favors, or instant desk décor, this printer is straight-up joy, earning an Excellent rating in our 2021 Instax Link Wide review. We’re finding Memorial Day Deals everywhere, from retailers like Amazon to top brands like Apple, HP, and Dell.. And don’t forget to check out all of the Memorial Day Deals Under $100 and Under $50. But, if you’re looking for something more specific, we’ve rounded up the following holiday deals for you:

  • Controller noise - care or no?

Some controllers are loud. The current gen XBOX controller is LOUD. Aggressively. The PS5, not so much. Some third party ones are pretty loud, too, like 8bitdo's buttons.

But does it bother you or take you out of the experience? Or do you find it oddly satisfying?

I actually quite enjoy hearing the clacking noises watching speedruns but not that big a fan hearing it while I'm playing.

I've really never even paid attention to it. But now that you've brought it my attention, it's going to be the only thing I can think of when I'm using a controller.

    Thanks OP.

I've never noticed except that the rumble on the wireless Xbox controller is in fact extremely loud; it startles me sometimes.

I haven't really thought about it before, but I've spent my life playing PC games on Cherry MX Blues and fighting games on my arcade stick so I really have been using the loudest possible input methods this whole time.

The combination of the d-pad and the rumble motors on the Series controllers can wake the dead.

The clickiness of sticks or buttons doesn't bother me but rumble is something I disable as soon as I get hands on a controller almost immediately since the feature was introduced. Absolutely hate it.

The only controller that has ever really bothered me has been exclusive to all three dualsenses I have owned, and it's this disconcertingly loud and aggressive clicking/rattling that comes from the rumble in certain games.

I used to not think about it. But after using the Dual Sense primarily for the last couple years, I can't help but notice how loud my 8bitdo is.

The switch pro controller sounds like it's filled with bees when it rumbles. It's really annoying because you can barely even feel the LRA's in the switch pro controller, they really needed larger ones.

I prefer ps controllers, but got an xbox series controller for compatibility on PC. I haven't used it in years and instead just find workarounds for my dualsense if needed. The loudness is too much, it can be heard through mics and I'm concerned back when I had roommates they could hear it too.

I was shocked when watching old recordings and the clicking was that loud.

I hate noisy controllers. The Xbox Series ones drove me nuts. The dpad and all the buttons were too noisy.

My friend's Xbox series controller sounds like he is slapping a typewriter when we're party chatting. I wish I was exaggerating but I'm not. Other than that I'm not really bothered by controller noise.

Recently moved to maining the Dual Sense on PC after years of Xbox controllers just because of this. I grew tired of those loud and stiff buttons.

Dual Sense is inferior in some ways but at least those face buttons are a pleasure to press. Hopefully the Xbox Sebile controller really copies all the best things of the Dual Sense for the ultimate controller.

I really like how quiet the DualSense is. I have an Xbox controller only for PC games that don't have native DS support/prompts and I hate how noisy it is in comparison. It feels cheap.

I use a cherry blue mx keyboard, I'm fine with loud peripherals lol.

The only thing bothers me with noise is if something is amiss. Like if theres random squeaking from things or clicking that shouldn't be there. Those bother me.
