    A new poll finds that less than half of U.S. parents feel comfortable leaving their teenager alone in a hotel room while they grab breakfast. Fewer than a third would let their teen walk alone to a coffee shop. And only 1 in 5 would be okay with their teen wandering solo around an amusement park.
    Those results, released June 16, are troubling, says Sarah Clark, a public health expert and codirector of the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital National Poll on Children’s Health, which conducted the survey. Teenagers, she says, need the freedom to develop the confidence that they can navigate the world on their own.

You go in and you have some totally wacky AI therapist who promises you that they're a real person, and the next thing you know, they're inviting you to have sex—It's creepy, it's weird, but they'll be OK,” he says. However, bots like these have already proven capable of endangering vulnerable young people and emboldening those with dangerous impulses. Michał wanted more than screen time; he wanted honest conversations, spontaneous collaboration and a chance to grow alongside others in the field.
    What began as a modest gathering quickly grew into something much bigger. That original meetup evolved into what is now the World Visualization Festival, an international event that welcomes artists from across Europe and beyond.
    “I didn’t expect our small gathering to grow into a global festival,” Michał says. “But I knew I wanted a connection. I believed that through sharing ideas and experiences, we could all grow professionally, creatively, and personally. And that we’d enjoy the journey more.”
    The response was overwhelming. Each year, more artists from across Poland and Europe join the event in Wrocław, located in south-western Poland.     Why building trust matters more than building components.There’s a scene in Field of Dreams that regularly comes to mind. Ray Kinsellais standing at the edge of his cornfield ballpark, full of doubt about his ball field project. In fact, it’s been purpose-built for them.Design Systems are politicalI never would have imagined how political design systems would be. They seem logical and straightforward. It’s everything you need to build interfaces and consistent experiences. So, I thought the quality of the work would speak for itself. But once your system meets the real world, things get complicated. Real fast.Everyone already has established working patterns and people aren’t usually inclined to change. Plus, designers have their opinions. Engineers have priorities. Product managers have launch dates. And everyone already has a “good-enough solution”. So, now your carefully crafted design system feels more like a threat or liability than the life-changing birthday present you thought it’d be.You thought you were offering something amazing. They hear restriction. They see more steps. And they’re annoyed — at you — for meddling in their perfectly stable world.Why? Well, people love their tools. And, I mean LOVE them. They deeply cherish them. I think of the carpenter who’s used the same, trusty 20oz wood-handled hammer for 40 years. It’s weathered difficult projects and has dents and stains from 1,000s of projects. How do you convince someone to leave that hammer behind and pick up a new, unproven hammer for their work? It usually happens in community…in relationships.So, it turns out, building the system was the easy part. Getting people to care about it? That’s the real work. And that’s where building relationships comes in.The real work: building relationshipsTrue adoption doesn’t happen through documentation or a flashy campaign.So you can’t rely on a “build it and they will come” mentality. It means you need to make time to understand the people you’re building for and with. Because if it isn’t theirs, it won’t matter how good it is. Every group has different motivations, pain points, and goals. If you want them on board, you have to speak to them, about them, and how your system will help them.Designers need to see how the system supports creativity, not stifles it. Demonstrate how it will help them be more effective in their work.Engineers care about stability, performance, and clean code. Show them the efficiency that it brings to their development pipelines.PMs are focused on delivery. Make the system reduce friction and risk.Executives want the business case to be clear. Show them how your system enables faster velocity, better consistency, and reduced maintenance cost.Establishing how individual goals come together as shared goals is critical.Sounds selfish, right? Not really. They’re paid to do their job, and if you want your design system to be successful, it has to make them successful. So if you can’t answer a need to any of your partners or stakeholders, go back and figure out how to create that kind of value…or start with the people where the value already is.It’s the relationships that shift the dynamic. Suddenly it’s not “my design system vs. their priorities”…it’s shared ownership…our collective win.You can’t enforce your way to powerful adoptionYour first instinct might be to skip the relationships and rely on the “because I said so” method. So you add mandates. Governance councils. Approval gates. But none of them really work. You’ll have people subvert the system, or hold so fearfully tight to it that it hurts the product experience in the end.People don’t adopt systems because they have to. They adopt them because they believe in them. And belief is earned, not enforced. Your job is to find the intrinsic motivation that will cause them to jump on board and be a raving fan spreading the good news of your system. And that can’t be a marketing slogan or tagline; it has to be built into the design system.The goal isn’t to control usage…it’s to cultivate trust, leading to usage. It’s better to have ten enthusiastic partners than a hundred reluctant rule-followers. Because those ten partners? They’ll advocate for you. They’ll give real feedback. They’ll make the system better.It sounds uncomfortable, but it’s best to trade policing behavior for building partnerships. That’s the moment your system will truly grow. Because trust is a currency that earns interest.Trust is the real foundationDesign systems rely on a strong foundation: principles, guidelines, tokens, styles, components, and more.   • How to Convince Management Colleagues That AI Isn't a Passing Fad

These individuals tend to be convinced that while AI may be a useful tool in certain situations, it's not going to change business in any truly meaningful way. Call them skeptics or call them realists, but such individuals really do exist, and it's the enterprise's CIOs and other IT leaders who need to gently guide them into reality. AI adoption tends to fall into three mindsets: early adopters who recognize its benefits, skeptics who fear its risks, and a large middle group -- those who are curious, but uncertain, observes Dave McQuarrie, HP's chief commercial officer in an online interview. "The key to closing the AI adoption gap lies in engaging this middle group, equipping them with knowledge, and guiding them through practical implementation." Effective Approaches The most important move is simply getting started. Establish a group of advocates in your company to serve as your early AI adopters, McQuarrie says. "Pick two or three processes to completely automate rather than casting a wide net, and use these as case studies to learn from," he advises. "By beginning with a subset of users, leaders can develop a solid foundation as they roll out the tool more widely across their business." Related:Start small, gather data, and present your use case, demonstrating how AI can support you and your colleagues to do your jobs better and faster, recommends Nicola Cain, CEO and principal consultant at Handley Gill Limited, a UK-based legal, regulatory and compliance consultancy. "This could be by analyzing customer interactions to demonstrate how the introduction of a chatbot to give customers prompt answers to easily addressed questions ... or showing how vast volumes of network log data could be analyzed by AI to identify potentially malign incidents that warrant further investigation," she says in an email interview. Changing Mindsets Question the skeptical leader about their biggest business bottleneck, suggests Jeff Mains, CEO of business consulting firm Champion Leadership Group. "Whether it’s slow decision-making, inconsistent customer experiences, or operational inefficiencies, there's a strategic AI-driven solution for nearly every major business challenge," he explains in an online interview. "The key is showing leaders how AI directly solves their most pressing problems today." When dealing with a reluctant executive, start by identifying an AI use case, Cain says. "AI functionality already performs strongly in areas like forecasting, recognition, event detection, personalization, interaction support, recommendations, and goal-driven optimization," she states. "Good business areas to identify a potential use case could therefore be in finance, customer service, marketing, cyber security, or stock control." Related:Strengthening Your Case Executives respond to proof, not promises, Mains says. "Instead of leading with research reports, I’ve found that real, industry-specific case studies are far more impactful," he observes. "If a direct competitor has successfully integrated AI into sales, marketing, or operations, use that example, because it creates urgency." Instead of just citing AI-driven efficiency gains, Mains recommends framing AI as a way to free-up leadership to focus on high-level strategy rather than day-to-day operations. Instead of trying to pitch AI in broad terms, Mains advises aligning the technology to the company's stated goals. "If the company is struggling with customer retention, talk about how AI can improve personalization," he suggests. "If operational inefficiencies are a problem, highlight AI-driven automation." The moment AI is framed as a business enabler rather than a technology trend, the conversation shifts from resistance to curiosity. Related:When All Else Fails If leadership refuses to embrace AI, it’s important to document the cost of inaction, Mains says. "Keep track of inefficiencies, missed opportunities, and competitor advancements," he recommends. Sometimes, leadership only shifts when management’s view of the risks of staying stagnant outweigh the risks of change. "If a company refuses to innovate despite clear benefits, that’s a red flag for long-term growth." Final Thoughts For enterprises that have so far done little or nothing in the way of AI deployment, the technology may appear optional, McQuarrie observes. Yet soon, operating without AI will become as unthinkable as running a business without the internet. Enterprise leaders who delay AI adoption risk falling behind the competition. "The best approach is to embrace a mindset of humility and curiosity -- actively seek out knowledge, ask questions, and learn from peers who are already seeing AI’s impact," he says. "To stay competitive in this rapidly evolving landscape, leaders should start now." The best companies aren't just using AI to improve; they're using the technology to redefine how they do business, Mains says. Leaders who recognize AI as a business accelerator will be the ones leading their industries in the next decade. "Those who hesitate? Call them skeptics or call them realists, but such individuals really do exist, and it's the enterprise's CIOs and other IT leaders who need to gently guide them into reality. AI adoption tends to fall into three mindsets: early adopters who recognize its benefits, skeptics who fear its risks, and a large middle group -- those who are curious, but uncertain, observes Dave McQuarrie, HP's chief commercial officer in an online interview. "The key to closing the AI adoption gap lies in engaging this middle group, equipping them with knowledge, and guiding them through practical implementation." Effective Approaches The most important move is simply getting started. Establish a group of advocates in your company to serve as your early AI adopters, McQuarrie says. "Pick two or three processes to completely automate rather than casting a wide net, and use these as case studies to learn from," he advises. "Whether it’s slow decision-making, inconsistent customer experiences, or operational inefficiencies, there's a strategic AI-driven solution for nearly every major business challenge," he explains in an online interview. "The key is showing leaders how AI directly solves their most pressing problems today." When dealing with a reluctant executive, start by identifying an AI use case, Cain says. "AI functionality already performs strongly in areas like forecasting, recognition, event detection, personalization, interaction support, recommendations, and goal-driven optimization," she states. "If the company is struggling with customer retention, talk about how AI can improve personalization," he suggests. "If operational inefficiencies are a problem, highlight AI-driven automation." The moment AI is framed as a business enabler rather than a technology trend, the conversation shifts from resistance to curiosity. Related:When All Else Fails If leadership refuses to embrace AI, it’s important to document the cost of inaction, Mains says. "Keep track of inefficiencies, missed opportunities, and competitor advancements," he recommends. Sometimes, leadership only shifts when management’s view of the risks of staying stagnant outweigh the risks of change. "If a company refuses to innovate despite clear benefits, that’s a red flag for long-term growth." Final Thoughts For enterprises that have so far done little or nothing in the way of AI deployment, the technology may appear optional, McQuarrie observes. Yet soon, operating without AI will become as unthinkable as running a business without the internet. Enterprise leaders who delay AI adoption risk falling behind the competition. "The best approach is to embrace a mindset of humility and curiosity -- actively seek out knowledge, ask questions, and learn from peers who are already seeing AI’s impact," he says. "To stay competitive in this rapidly evolving landscape, leaders should start now." The best companies aren't just using AI to improve; they're using the technology to redefine how they do business, Mains says. Leaders who recognize AI as a business accelerator will be the ones leading their industries in the next decade. "Those who hesitate?     While Gen V’s second season won’t premiere until September, Amazon took to CCXP Mexico to give fans a look at the new season — and a little of how The Boys season 4 impacted the college-set spinoff. Here’s the official synopsis:

    As the rest of America adjusts to Homelander’s iron fist, back at Godolkin University, the mysterious new Dean preaches a curriculum that promises to make students more powerful than ever. Cate and Sam are celebrated heroes, while Marie, Jordan, and Emma reluctantly return to college, burdened by months of trauma and loss. But parties and classes are hard to care about with war brewing between Humans and Supes, both on and off campus. The gang learns of a secret program that goes back to the founding of Godolkin University that may have larger implications than they realize. And, somehow, Marie is a part of it.

  • AI could consume more power than Bitcoin by the end of 2025

    AI could soon surpass Bitcoin mining in energy consumption, according to a new analysis that concludes artificial intelligence could use close to half of all the electricity consumed by data centers globally by the end of 2025.The estimates come from Alex de Vries-Gao, a PhD candidate at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Institute for Environmental Studies who has tracked cryptocurrencies’ electricity consumption and environmental impact in previous research and on his website Digiconomist. He published his latest commentary on AI’s growing electricity demand last week in the journal Joule. AI already accounts for up to a fifth of the electricity that data centers use, according to de Vries-Gao. It’s a tricky number to pin down without big tech companies sharing data specifically on how much energy their AI models consume. De Vries-Gao had to make projections based on the supply chain for specialized computer chips used for AI. He and other researchers trying to understand AI’s energy consumption have found, however, that its appetite is growing despite efficiency gains — and at a fast enough clip to warrant more scrutiny.“Oh boy, here we go.”With alternative cryptocurrencies to Bitcoin — namely Ethereum — moving to less energy-intensive technologies, de Vries-Gao says he figured he was about to hang up his hat. And then “ChatGPT happened,” he tells The Verge. “I was like, Oh boy, here we go. This is another usually energy-intensive technology, especially in extremely competitive markets.” There are a couple key parallels he sees. First is a mindset of “bigger is better.” “We see these big techconstantly boosting the size of their models, trying to have the very best model out there, but in the meanwhile, of course, also boosting the resource demands of those models,” he says. That chase has led to a boom in new data centers for AI, particularly in the US, where there are more data centers than in any other country. Energy companies plan to build out new gas-fired power plants and nuclear reactors to meet growing electricity demand from AI. Sudden spikes in electricity demand can stress power grids and derail efforts to switch to cleaner sources of energy, problems similarly posed by new crypto mines that are essentially like data centers used to validate blockchain transactions. The other parallel de Vries-Gao sees with his previous work on crypto mining is how hard it can be to suss out how much energy these technologies are actually using and their environmental impact. To be sure, many major tech companies developing AI tools have set climate goals and include their greenhouse gas emissions in annual sustainability reports. That’s how we know that both Google’s and Microsoft’s carbon footprints have grown in recent years as they focus on AI. But companies usually don’t break down the data to show what’s attributable to AI specifically.To figure this out, de Vries-Gao used what he calls a “triangulation” technique. He turned to publicly available device details, analyst estimates, and companies’ earnings calls to estimate hardware production for AI and how much energy that hardware will likely use. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, which fabricates AI chips for other companies including Nvidia and AMD, saw its production capacity for packaged chips used for AI more than double between 2023 and 2024. After calculating how much specialized AI equipment can be produced, de Vries-Gao compared that to information about how much electricity these devices consume. Last year, they likely burned through as much electricity as de Vries-Gao’s home country of the Netherlands, he found. He expects that number to grow closer to a country as large as the UK by the end of 2025, with power demand for AI reaching 23GW. Last week, a separate report from consulting firm ICF forecast a 25 percent rise in electricity demand in the US by the end of the decade thanks in large part to AI, traditional data centers, and Bitcoin mining. It’s still really hard to make blanket predictions about AI’s energy consumption and the resulting environmental impact — a point laid out clearly in a deeply reported article published in MIT Technology Review last week with support from the Tarbell Center for AI Journalism. A person using AI tools to promote a fundraiser might create nearly twice as much carbon pollution if their queries were answered by data centers in West Virginia than in California, as an example. Energy intensity and emissions depend on a range of factors including the types of queries made, the size of the models answering those queries, and the share of renewables and fossil fuels on the local power grid feeding the data center. It’s a mystery that could be solved if tech companies were more transparentIt’s a mystery that could be solved if tech companies were more transparent about AI in their sustainability reporting. “The crazy amount of steps that you have to go through to be able to put any number at all on this, I think this is really absurd,” de Vries-Gao says. “It shouldn’t be this ridiculously hard. But sadly, it is.”Looking further into the future, there’s even more uncertainty when it comes to whether energy efficiency gains will eventually flatten out electricity demand. DeepSeek made a splash earlier this year when it said that its AI model could use a fraction of the electricity that Meta’s Llama 3.1 model does — raising questions about whether tech companies really need to be such energy hogs in order to make advances in AI. The question is whether they’ll prioritize building more efficient models and abandon the “bigger is better” approach of simply throwing more data and computing power at their AI ambitions. When Ethereum transitioned to a far more energy efficient strategy for validating transactions than Bitcoin mining, its electricity consumption suddenly dropped by 99.988 percent. Environmental advocates have pressured other blockchain networks to follow suit. But others — namely Bitcoin miners — are reluctant to abandon investments they’ve already made in existing hardware. There’s also the risk of Jevons paradox with AI, that more efficient models will still gobble up increasing amounts of electricity because people just start to use the technology more.     AI could consume more power than Bitcoin by the end of 2025
    AI could soon surpass Bitcoin mining in energy consumption, according to a new analysis that concludes artificial intelligence could use close to half of all the electricity consumed by data centers globally by the end of 2025.The estimates come from Alex de Vries-Gao, a PhD candidate at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam Institute for Environmental Studies who has tracked cryptocurrencies’ electricity consumption and environmental impact in previous research and on his website Digiconomist. He published his latest commentary on AI’s growing electricity demand last week in the journal Joule. AI already accounts for up to a fifth of the electricity that data centers use, according to de Vries-Gao. It’s a tricky number to pin down without big tech companies sharing data specifically on how much energy their AI models consume. De Vries-Gao had to make projections based on the supply chain for specialized computer chips used for AI. He and other researchers trying to understand AI’s energy consumption have found, however, that its appetite is growing despite efficiency gains — and at a fast enough clip to warrant more scrutiny.“Oh boy, here we go.”With alternative cryptocurrencies to Bitcoin — namely Ethereum — moving to less energy-intensive technologies, de Vries-Gao says he figured he was about to hang up his hat. And then “ChatGPT happened,” he tells The Verge. “I was like, Oh boy, here we go. Sudden spikes in electricity demand can stress power grids and derail efforts to switch to cleaner sources of energy, problems similarly posed by new crypto mines that are essentially like data centers used to validate blockchain transactions. The other parallel de Vries-Gao sees with his previous work on crypto mining is how hard it can be to suss out how much energy these technologies are actually using and their environmental impact. To be sure, many major tech companies developing AI tools have set climate goals and include their greenhouse gas emissions in annual sustainability reports. That’s how we know that both Google’s and Microsoft’s carbon footprints have grown in recent years as they focus on AI. But companies usually don’t break down the data to show what’s attributable to AI specifically.To figure this out, de Vries-Gao used what he calls a “triangulation” technique. He turned to publicly available device details, analyst estimates, and companies’ earnings calls to estimate hardware production for AI and how much energy that hardware will likely use. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), which fabricates AI chips for other companies including Nvidia and AMD, saw its production capacity for packaged chips used for AI more than double between 2023 and 2024. After calculating how much specialized AI equipment can be produced, de Vries-Gao compared that to information about how much electricity these devices consume. Last year, they likely burned through as much electricity as de Vries-Gao’s home country of the Netherlands, he found. He expects that number to grow closer to a country as large as the UK by the end of 2025, with power demand for AI reaching 23GW. Last week, a separate report from consulting firm ICF forecast a 25 percent rise in electricity demand in the US by the end of the decade thanks in large part to AI, traditional data centers, and Bitcoin mining.
