  • A Step-by-Step Guide to Building a Semantic Search Engine with Sentence Transformers, FAISS, and all-MiniLM-L6-v2
    www.marktechpost.com
Semantic search goes beyond traditional keyword matching by understanding the contextual meaning of search queries. Instead of simply matching exact words, semantic search systems capture the intent and contextual definition of the query and return relevant results even when they dont contain the same keywords. In this tutorial, well implement a semantic search system using Sentence Transformers, a powerful library built on top of Hugging Faces Transformers that provides pre-trained models specifically optimized for generating sentence embeddings. These embeddings are numerical representations of text that capture semantic meaning, allowing us to find similar content through vector similarity. Well create a practical application: a semantic search engine for a collection of scientific abstracts that can answer research queries with relevant papers, even when the terminology differs between the query and relevant documents.First, lets install the necessary libraries in our Colab notebook:!pip install sentence-transformers faiss-cpu numpy pandas matplotlib datasetsNow, lets import the libraries well need:import numpy as npimport pandas as pdimport matplotlib.pyplot as pltfrom sentence_transformers import SentenceTransformerimport faissfrom typing import List, Dict, Tupleimport timeimport reimport torchFor our demonstration, well use a collection of scientific paper abstracts. Lets create a small dataset of abstracts from various fields:abstracts = [ { "id": 1, "title": "Deep Learning for Natural Language Processing", "abstract": "This paper explores recent advances in deep learning models for natural language processing tasks. We review transformer architectures including BERT, GPT, and T5, and analyze their performance on various benchmarks including question answering, sentiment analysis, and text classification." }, { "id": 2, "title": "Climate Change Impact on Marine Ecosystems", "abstract": "Rising ocean temperatures and acidification are severely impacting coral reefs and marine biodiversity. This study presents data collected over a 10-year period, demonstrating accelerated decline in reef ecosystems and proposing conservation strategies to mitigate further damage." }, { "id": 3, "title": "Advancements in mRNA Vaccine Technology", "abstract": "The development of mRNA vaccines represents a breakthrough in immunization technology. This review discusses the mechanism of action, stability improvements, and clinical efficacy of mRNA platforms, with special attention to their rapid deployment during the COVID-19 pandemic." }, { "id": 4, "title": "Quantum Computing Algorithms for Optimization Problems", "abstract": "Quantum computing offers potential speedups for solving complex optimization problems. This paper presents quantum algorithms for combinatorial optimization and compares their theoretical performance with classical methods on problems including traveling salesman and maximum cut." }, { "id": 5, "title": "Sustainable Urban Planning Frameworks", "abstract": "This research proposes frameworks for sustainable urban development that integrate renewable energy systems, efficient public transportation networks, and green infrastructure. Case studies from five cities demonstrate reductions in carbon emissions and improvements in quality of life metrics." }, { "id": 6, "title": "Neural Networks for Computer Vision", "abstract": "Convolutional neural networks have revolutionized computer vision tasks. This paper examines recent architectural innovations including residual connections, attention mechanisms, and vision transformers, evaluating their performance on image classification, object detection, and segmentation benchmarks." }, { "id": 7, "title": "Blockchain Applications in Supply Chain Management", "abstract": "Blockchain technology enables transparent and secure tracking of goods throughout supply chains. This study analyzes implementations across food, pharmaceutical, and retail industries, quantifying improvements in traceability, reduction in counterfeit products, and enhanced consumer trust." }, { "id": 8, "title": "Genetic Factors in Autoimmune Disorders", "abstract": "This research identifies key genetic markers associated with increased susceptibility to autoimmune conditions. Through genome-wide association studies of 15,000 patients, we identified novel variants that influence immune system regulation and may serve as targets for personalized therapeutic approaches." }, { "id": 9, "title": "Reinforcement Learning for Robotic Control Systems", "abstract": "Deep reinforcement learning enables robots to learn complex manipulation tasks through trial and error. This paper presents a framework that combines model-based planning with policy gradient methods to achieve sample-efficient learning of dexterous manipulation skills." }, { "id": 10, "title": "Microplastic Pollution in Freshwater Systems", "abstract": "This study quantifies microplastic contamination across 30 freshwater lakes and rivers, identifying primary sources and transport mechanisms. Results indicate correlation between population density and contamination levels, with implications for water treatment policies and plastic waste management." }]papers_df = pd.DataFrame(abstracts)print(f"Dataset loaded with {len(papers_df)} scientific papers")papers_df[["id", "title"]]Now well load a pre-trained Sentence Transformer model from Hugging Face. Well use the all-MiniLM-L6-v2 model, which provides a good balance between performance and speed:model_name = 'all-MiniLM-L6-v2'model = SentenceTransformer(model_name)print(f"Loaded model: {model_name}")Next, well convert our text abstracts into dense vector embeddings:documents = papers_df['abstract'].tolist()document_embeddings = model.encode(documents, show_progress_bar=True)print(f"Generated {len(document_embeddings)} embeddings with dimension {document_embeddings.shape[1]}")FAISS (Facebook AI Similarity Search) is a library for efficient similarity search. Well use it to index our document embeddings:dimension = document_embeddings.shape[1] index = faiss.IndexFlatL2(dimension)index.add(np.array(document_embeddings).astype('float32'))print(f"Created FAISS index with {index.ntotal} vectors")Now lets implement a function that takes a query, converts it to an embedding, and retrieves the most similar documents:def semantic_search(query: str, top_k: int = 3) -> List[Dict]: """ Search for documents similar to query Args: query: Text to search for top_k: Number of results to return Returns: List of dictionaries containing document info and similarity score """ query_embedding = model.encode([query]) distances, indices = index.search(np.array(query_embedding).astype('float32'), top_k) results = [] for i, idx in enumerate(indices[0]): results.append({ 'id': papers_df.iloc[idx]['id'], 'title': papers_df.iloc[idx]['title'], 'abstract': papers_df.iloc[idx]['abstract'], 'similarity_score': 1 - distances[0][i] / 2 }) return resultsLets test our semantic search with various queries that demonstrate its ability to understand meaning beyond exact keywords:test_queries = [ "How do transformers work in natural language processing?", "What are the effects of global warming on ocean life?", "Tell me about COVID vaccine development", "Latest algorithms in quantum computing", "How can cities reduce their carbon footprint?"]for query in test_queries: print("\n" + "="*80) print(f"Query: {query}") print("="*80) results = semantic_search(query, top_k=3) for i, result in enumerate(results): print(f"\nResult #{i+1} (Score: {result['similarity_score']:.4f}):") print(f"Title: {result['title']}") print(f"Abstract snippet: {result['abstract'][:150]}...")Lets visualize the document embeddings to see how they cluster by topic:from sklearn.decomposition import PCApca = PCA(n_components=2)reduced_embeddings = pca.fit_transform(document_embeddings)plt.figure(figsize=(12, 8))plt.scatter(reduced_embeddings[:, 0], reduced_embeddings[:, 1], s=100, alpha=0.7)for i, (x, y) in enumerate(reduced_embeddings): plt.annotate(papers_df.iloc[i]['title'][:20] + "...", (x, y), fontsize=9, alpha=0.8)plt.title('Document Embeddings Visualization (PCA)')plt.xlabel('Component 1')plt.ylabel('Component 2')plt.grid(True, linestyle='--', alpha=0.7)plt.tight_layout()plt.show()Lets create a more interactive search interface:from IPython.display import display, HTML, clear_outputimport ipywidgets as widgetsdef run_search(query_text): clear_output(wait=True) display(HTML(f"<h3>Query: {query_text}</h3>")) start_time = time.time() results = semantic_search(query_text, top_k=5) search_time = time.time() - start_time display(HTML(f"<p>Found {len(results)} results in {search_time:.4f} seconds</p>")) for i, result in enumerate(results): html = f""" <div style="margin-bottom: 20px; padding: 15px; border: 1px solid #ddd; border-radius: 5px;"> <h4>{i+1}. {result['title']} <span style="color: #007bff;">(Score: {result['similarity_score']:.4f})</span></h4> <p>{result['abstract']}</p> </div> """ display(HTML(html))search_box = widgets.Text( value='', placeholder='Type your search query here...', description='Search:', layout=widgets.Layout(width='70%'))search_button = widgets.Button( description='Search', button_style='primary', tooltip='Click to search')def on_button_clicked(b): run_search(search_box.value)search_button.on_click(on_button_clicked)display(widgets.HBox([search_box, search_button]))In this tutorial, weve built a complete semantic search system using Sentence Transformers. This system can understand the meaning behind user queries and return relevant documents even when there isnt exact keyword matching. Weve seen how embedding-based search provides more intelligent results than traditional methods. Here is the Colab Notebook. • Ongoing Cyber Attacks Exploit Critical Vulnerabilities in Cisco Smart Licensing Utility
    thehackernews.com
Mar 21, 2025Ravie LakshmananCyber Attack / VulnerabilityTwo now-patched security flaws impacting Cisco Smart Licensing Utility are seeing active exploitation attempts, according to SANS Internet Storm Center. The two critical-rated vulnerabilities in question are listed below - CVE-2024-20439 (CVSS score: 9.8) - The presence of an undocumented static user credential for an administrative account that an attacker could exploit to log in to an affected systemCVE-2024-20440 (CVSS score: 9.8) - A vulnerability arising due to an excessively verbose debug log file that an attacker could exploit to access such files by means of a crafted HTTP request and obtain credentials that can be used to access the APISuccessful exploitation of the flaws could enable an attacker to log in to the affected system with administrative privileges, and obtain log files that contain sensitive data, including credentials that can be used to access the API.That said, the vulnerabilities are only exploitable in scenarios where the utility is actively running. The shortcomings, which impact versions 2.0.0, 2.1.0, and 2.2.0, have since been patched by Cisco in September 2024. Version 2.3.0 of Cisco Smart License Utility is not susceptible to the two bugs.As of March 2025, threat actors have been observed attempting to actively exploit the two vulnerabilities, SANS Technology Institute's Dean of Research Johannes B. Ullrich said, adding the unidentified threat actors are also weaponizing other flaws, including what appears to be an information disclosure flaw (CVE-2024-0305, CVSS score: 5.3) in Guangzhou Yingke Electronic Technology Ncast. It's currently not known what the end goal of the campaign is, or who is behind it. In light of active abuse, it's imperative that users apply the necessary patches for optimal protection.Found this article interesting? • Random: Sega Surprises Sonic The Hedgehog Fans With Official Timeline
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: SEGASonic the Hedgehog has been around for a long time now and if you're having trouble keeping track of all the highlights in his career, don't worry - Sega's got you covered with its official timeline. This is all part of the Sonic Channel's relaunch in Japan, which has now been going strong for 20 years. The video game series' website now includes an official timeline documenting Sonic's adventures from the "prehistory" of the series to "200 years later". It kicks off with Sonic World Adventure (aka Sonic Unleashed) and ends with the 2006 release Sonic the Hedgehog.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube799kWatch on YouTube Sonic fans have already noticed multiple details including the fact the Dreamcast party title Sonic Shuffle is "canon". It takes place in the "modern Sonic era" right after Sonic Adventure and before Sonic Adventure 2. Even games like Sonic 4 and Mania have also been acknowledged.SONIC SHUFFLE IS CANON??? Nick Dooficus (@doofivirus.bsky.social) 2025-03-20T17:13:28.647ZThis timeline doesn't feature every Sonic game, but it seems to highlight a lot of notable points in Sonic history and lore. It even features some other spin-off games like Sonic's racing entries including Free Riders. Once again, you can check out the whole thing on Sonic's Japanese website.Even if this timeline can be used as a guideline going forward, as already noted, there are still a lot of gaps along the way, and many games (as well as new titles) obviously haven't been included - so there are still plenty of things for fans to work out and other aspects that are still open to interpretation.Images: SEGAImage: SEGAThis same website has also apparently been updated with much more including a "finalised" canon list of officially recognised Sonic characters from the modern and classic eras, and how characters are connected to Sonic and the main gang.Image: SEGA Take a guess who wonNintendo confirmsWhat do you think of this official Sonic history? • Why Critical Thinking Is Your Best Weapon Against The Coming Deepfake Tsunami
    www.forbes.com
Deepfake technology is evolving faster than detection tools can keep pace, creating unprecedented ... More business risks, including fraud and disinformation.Adobe StockFake (sometimes called synthetic) content has exploded in the past few years, with Amazon research suggesting that up to 60 percent of the content on the internet is AI-generated.Not all of this is "deepfake," which specifically means content designed to look really misleadingly. In recent years weve seen deepfakes used to manipulate elections, commit fraud and theft, and create pornographic images of people without their consent. These problems are only likely to get worse as AI tools become more powerful and accessible. Grok 3, created by Elon Musks xAI, for example, is now free for all X (Twitter) users and can be used to make convincing deepfakes of real people. There are lots of tools available that can protect against deception or abuse perpetrated by deepfake. AI-based detection tools can detect, with varying levels of success, whether content has been digitally generated or manipulated. Multi-factor authentication and other digital identity verification tools can also protect against social engineering attacks. But deepfake technology is evolving and improving so quickly that this isnt enough, which is why education, critical thinking and awareness are equally, if not more important if you want to take steps to protect yourself.Critical Thinking And AwarenessTechnology can help protect us against deepfakes, but it doesn't provide all the answers, and it isnt 100 percent reliable. This is why I believe that the best defense against being harmed by AI-generated disinformation is the human skills of contextual awareness and critical thinking.Businesses need to be training employees today to be able to assess content and information critically. And as individuals, we should understand how and why those with bad intentions will try to influence our thoughts and choices - including our democratic choices.Deepfakes create unique challenges that require some specific skills to navigate:Fact-checking and verification are two obvious ones today, its more vital than ever to check our sources and determine where information is really coming from. Facebook has developed some features that warn users when information might be deceptive, such as when it comes from sources that seem to try and hide their identity. However, it has also been criticized for removing its fact-checking functions, which could be seen as a backward step.Contextual awareness can often be as simple as asking, "Does this make sense?"Being aware of the context and situation probably helped many people in 2022 realize that this video of Volodymyr Zelensky surrendering to Russia was not genuine. The employee of the engineering firm Arup, who was duped into transferring $25 million to scammers using a deepfake of his boss's voice, might have been better prepared if they had been more aware of the unusual nature of the request.Critical thinking skills help us ask who information is coming from and why they want us to have it. Disinformation content will often play on emotion in an extreme way to cause fear, anger or excitement. Luckily, we can be trained to spot when we're being manipulated in this way.So, three things we should learn to consider about any piece of content we consume are:Is it trying to influence me?Is it likely to have happened? Can I trust the person telling me?Hammering home the importance of this approach to critically thinking about content is vital to protecting us from the impact of deepfakes.Adapting To A Post-Truth WorldDeepfake technology is only going to become more sophisticated. We are likely to reach a point where even the best detection tools wont always spot fake video, images or audio. The human defensive mechanisms Ive covered here critical thinking, awareness and reasoning are likely to remain viable defenses for longer. Will regulation protect us? Governments in some countries, such as China and the EU, have already introduced regulations regarding deepfakes. Unfortunately, though, criminals dont always follow the law.So organizations need to react to this now to ensure everyone understands the procedures and policies around verifying and critically assessing information before acting on it.For individuals, awareness of the dangers of AI misinformation, whether its trying to influence who we vote for, or who we give money to, should become second nature. This should help to keep us on the right path in a future where we may not be sure whether we can trust what we see with our own eyes.

Sebastian Fundora vs. Chordale BookerCredit: Premier Boxing ChampionsEvery time I see WBC and WBO super welterweight champion Sebastian Fundora (21-1-1, 13 KO), despite how talented and exciting he is in the ring, the one thing I cant get over is how he not only makes 154 pounds at 6-foot-6 but shines as a unified champion.Fundora is back in action on Saturday when he takes on Chordale Booker in his first title defense since winning the titles via split decision over Tim Tszyu.Heres how you can watch the fight.Sebastian Fundora vs. Chordale Booker How to WatchDate & Location:Saturday, March 22, 2025 Michelob ULTRA Arena, Mandalay Bay, Las VegasStart Time:8:00 p.m. ETWhere to Watch:Amazon Prime Video (Live Stream)Main Card:Sebastian Fundora vs. Chordale Booker (Main Event)Undercard Fights:Jesus Ramos Jr. vs. Guido Emmanuel Schramm (10-round super welterweight)Elijah Garcia vs. Terrell Gausha (10-round middleweight)Freudis Rojas vs. Maurice Lee (8-round welterweight)Alberto Mora Garcia vs. Viktor Slavinskyi (8-round super featherweight)Jursly Vargas vs. Uhlices Avelino-Reyes (6-round lightweight)Alexis De la Cerda Landin vs. Sharone Carter (6-round super bantamweight)Joseph Brown vs. Ezequiel Duran (6-round super welterweight)Roberto Guerrero vs. Sean Armas (4-round lightweight)Quincey Williams vs. TBA (6-round super welterweight)Brayan Gonzalez vs. Justin Marquez (4-round super bantamweight)Ticket InfoIf youre in the area and interested in attending in person, tickets are available through Mandalay Bay. Prices start at $75.The UndercardThe undercard is way under in this case.Jesus Ramos Jr. and Elijah Garcia are two promising young fighters in the same weight region. Neither is facing a wild test in Guido Emmanuel Schramm and Terrell Gausha, but there is a chance Ramos Jr. could be a future opponent for Fundora. The Main Event MatchupThe fight with Booker wasnt exactly what Fundora had in mind after he pulled the upset over Tszyu as a late replacement for the injured Keith Thurman. Fundora was seemingly moving toward a fight with Errol Spence Jr. that would have been a pay-per-view clash. There have been talks of a fight with rising Puerto Rican sensation Xander Zayas, but that may be a fight that takes place down the line. For now, Fundora will clash with Booker. The challenger comes into the fight with a 23-1 record with 11 KOs. Bookers only pro loss was a first-round KO defeat against Austin Ammo Williams in April 2022. Since the loss, Booker has won six fights in a row.The fight with Fundora represents his next serious step up in competition. For Fundora, a winif hes impressiveprovides another showcase for the 27-year-old who is still in search of the megafight that will catapult him into superstardom. There are a plethora of fights available for Fundora at super welterweight and possibly even at middleweight if he continues to win. Thurman, who just had a successful comeback last week with a third-round KO win over Brock Jarvis, is an option. The same can be said for Tszyu, Spence Jr., Zayas, and others. At Fundoras height, he should be able to fight as high as 168 pounds as he gets older. For now, his focus will probably be on unifying the titles at 154 pounds. He could face the man who stopped Tszyu, IBF champion Bakhram Murtazaliev. Well see what happens on Saturday, as Im sure the talk of Fundoras next challenge will begin immediately if he wins.Be on the lookout for the post-fight coverage after the main event.
