  • Google Confirms Gmail Upgrade3 Billion Users Must Now Decide
    www.forbes.com
Gmail is suddenly changingNurPhoto via Getty ImagesTheres a new battle taking place on your computers and your phones that will shape how you use technology for years to come. Google is leading the chargealbeit its not alone, and Gmail will likely change more than any other platform. That means serious decisions for its 3 billion users, who are well advised to think before clicking yes. Were talking AI and the breakneck speed with which new tools are being stitched into the platforms and services we all use daily. Apple may have been hit with an unintended slowdown, but not Google and Microsoft. Theres no stopping them.Take your Chrome search history as an example. Its surprisingly personal what you search on the web and how you term those searches. But AI will be let loose on that history, if you let it, using this to get to know you better so it can help you more. But this isnt an executive assistant, its a technology platform owned by the worlds most valuable marketing machine. Buyer beware, as they say.Or how about Microsofts new (and seemingly automated) opt-in to having its own Copilot AI let loose on OneDrive. Do you want Microsoft Copilot sniffing your OneDrive files? PC World asks. Too late. Allowing AI to sniff your cloud files may seem a little creepy, but Microsoft says it will only work with your authorization.Gmails latest AI trick.GoogleAnd so we come to Gmail, and Googles confirmation on Thursday that Gmail is rolling out a smarter search feature powered by AI to show you the most relevant results, faster. No doubt this is useful. Factoring in how you engage with emails and senders to better serve up results, to resolve the pain in email search. If youve ever struggled with finding information in your overflowing inbox, Google says, youre not alone. But again this is AI set loose on your personal information. I asked Google about the privacy implications and was assured that our priority is respecting our users privacy while giving them choice and control over their data. To that end, this particular tool is one of the 'smart features that users can control in their personalization settings. You can read more about those settings here.Theres no suggestion that your data is being syphoned off to train models or enhance marketing profiles, but it is being analyzed. Users must now need to decide on their own red lines. For me, theres a big difference between auditable on-device AI analysis versus whats done in the cloud. Ive argued before that Gmail and email more widely need to catch up with the on-device processing being applied to other platforms, and heres another good reason why thats becoming so critical. This new tool is dubbed most relevant search and is rolling out across personal Google accounts. Google says it can be accessed on the web and in the official Gmail app for Android and iOS. You can toggle back and forth between legacy recent and AI relevant results. Business users will get this as well, but not for some time.

  • Samsungs Android 15 UpdateBad News For Millions Of Galaxy S24 Owners
    www.forbes.com
Another surprising twist for Galaxy ownersFuture Publishing via Getty ImagesJust as it seemed Samsungs One UI 7 / Android 15 delays had finally come to an end, is there a nasty new surprise for millions of Galaxy S24 users? Perhaps. And if so it comes at an awkward time, given the even more serious issue facing those same users.Samsung has confirmed that its latest flagships will start receiving One UI 7 from April 7, and in the U.S. the published date for Galaxy S24 owners was April 10. But now as SammyFans reports, Samsung U.S. has dropped a One UI 7 bombshell, deleting the page confirming that April 10 date and its social media references as well.Meanwhile, the news site says, Samsung didnt touch any newsroom posts on global and other regional newsrooms. Weve seen such incidents with the One UI 6s rollout in 2023 when the Beta Program was halted due to unforeseen reasons in the U.S.SamMobile warns the same, that Samsung appears to have quietly backtracked on some of its One UI 7 release date claims, hinting at a possible delay in some markets Today, Samsung no longer seems as sure of itself as it was a couple of days ago.And this might not just be a U.S. issue. In parallel with retracting the original post from the U.S. Newsroom portal, SamMobile says, Samsung issued a new One UI 7 release announcement through its Australia Newsroom portal (and possibly others). Exact dates have gone. Samsung says its official rollout will start from April 7, but footnotes a warning that availability may vary by market. This is bad news, says PhoneArena. Were still a few weeks away from the official release of the update, so anything could happen, but things arent looking so good for Samsung at the moment. There is no confirmation, and this could all be nothing. Even a 24 or 48 hour delay might see media posts change. U.S. and other users should not worry unless and until theres updated news coming out of Samsung. For now assume mid to late April. That said, there is another issue behind the scenes here: a U.S. update mandate from its governments cyber defense agency. The fix was released by Google earlier in the month following active attacks against Samsung and other Android phones, but while it made it into Pixels release its not yet listed in Samsungs. The deadline is March 25. There is a chance this fix is being prioritized and might push back other updates. Its a lot of smoke, says Android Police, and where theres smoke, theres usually fire. There is a single saving grace for dejected Galaxy S24 owners, though, and its those other blog posts. Other various region announcements continue to appear live and unedited on the site It all points to a U.S.-centric delay away from April 10th.

  • A longevity scientist who says he's reversed his age by 15 years shares the diet he follows — and 3 foods he avoids
    www.businessinsider.com
2025-03-22T04:52:01Z Read in app Dr. Eric Verdin follows a Mediterranean-style diet and avoids ultra-processed foods. Buck Research Institute/Getty Images This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now.Have an account? Dr. Eric Verdin, 63, studies the biology of aging and how to get and stay healthy. He believes lifestyle factors such as diet play the biggest role in how long we live.He follows a Mediterranean-style diet and rarely drinks alcohol.A healthy aging doctor and researcher who claims to have reversed his biological age by up to 15 years said he follows a Mediterranean-style diet but avoids things like alcohol.Dr. Eric Verdin, the CEO and president of the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, studies how we can extend our "healthspan," or quality of life, by maintaining faculties that tend to decline with age, such as cognition, and preventing chronic diseases like cancer and type 2 diabetes. For the last decade, Verdin has used wearable devices, such as smartwatches, as well as quarterly blood tests, to track his own health and makes tweaks according to the results. Currently, he's working on eating an earlier dinner to extend his intermittent fasting window.According to tests that measure biomarkers such as inflammation, blood pressure, and cholesterol, while his chronological age is 68, Verdin's biological age is between 48 and 53. There is no consensus on the definition of biological age or how to measure it, so it differs according to the tests he refers to.In general, Verdin believes lifestyle factors, including diet, exercise, sleep, stress management, and social connections, play a larger role in determining how long we will live in good health than genes.Verdin shared the diet he swears by for longevity, and the three foods he limits as much as possible.Swears by: eating a Mediterranean-style diet Verdin said that there's strong evidence to suggest eating a good balance of complex carbohydrates such as sweet potatoes fats, and proteins is essential for health. He follows the principles of the Mediterranean diet, which is based on the traditional eating habits of people in countries such as Greece, Italy, and Turkey, and has been ranked the healthiest way to eat by the US News & World Report for eight years running."When you look at populations that are on this type of diet, they really are the healthy ones," Verdin said. The eating plan emphasizes fruits and vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, and lean sources of protein such as fish.Avoids: ultra-processed foodsVerdin follows the food writer Michael Pollan's advice of never eating anything you could order from a window or your grandmother wouldn't recognize as food or what would be considered ultra-professed foods. There isn't an agreed definition of ultra-processed foods, but they're typically considered to be made using ingredients and processes that you wouldn't have in a home kitchen. They tend to be highly marketed, low in fiber, and contain large amounts of fat, sugar, and salt: a combination which makes them "hyper-palatable," which studies suggest leads to overeating.Scientists are still trying to understand how they affect our health, but eating a diet high in UPFs was linked to 32 health problems, including obesity, cancer, and depression in a recent study. Burgers made of reconsituted meat can be classed as ultra-processed. Aleksandr Zubkov/Getty Images Avoids: fruit juiceWhile Verdin advocates eating plenty of fruit, he doesn't recommend drinking it, as juice tends to be high in sugar.Juicing removes the fiber from fruit. So you can drink several pieces of fruit in seconds, which you wouldn't be able to do if you ate them. When we consume sugary foods or beverages, our blood sugar spikes and the pancreas needs to release more insulin to balance it. With repeated spikes, after a period of time the pancreas may not be able to keep up with production needed, which can lead to insulin resistance, prediabetes, and type 2 diabetes.Fiber, which is great for gut health, also delays the absorption of the sugar therefore preventing blood sugar spikes, he said."When you eat an orange, the sugar comes in at a much slower rate. So your body is actually able to cope with it," Verdin said.Avoids: alcoholVerdin used to have a glass of wine with his wife most evenings, but after trying Dry January during the COVID pandemic, he realized that he had more energy and slept better without it. "So I never went back," he said. He'll still have the odd glass of wine on a special occasion but he rarely drinks these days.In January 2023, the World Health Organization said that "no level of alcohol consumption is safe when it comes to human health," and the US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy published an advisory bringing awareness to alcohol's links to cancerin January. The advisory said alcohol consumption was the third leading preventable cause of cancer in the US, after tobacco and obesity and recommended advocated for warning labels on alcoholic drinks.

On a limited 84-square-meter plot in Tokyo's central district, kooo Architects focused on the "gaps" within the urban fabric to design Hotel Rakuragu a 9-story hotel with open views despite its compact site. Terrace: The area is surrounded by typical mixed-use buildings in downtown Tokyo, lacking scenic vistas or uniform design regulations for neighboring structures in height, width, or materials. Unlike typical Tokyo hotels that omit balconies to maximize room space, kooo Architects observed the surrounding buildings and oriented each floor's openings toward urban gaps, creating balconies in varying directions. Each room features a unique balcony design, allowing guests to experience diverse views from different floors. This approach resulted in a building that appears as a white cuboid carved with irregular voids, forming a rhythmic faade.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The plan grid (X1-X4) was vertically connected to optimize cost efficiency. By modifying the single-span structure at the X4-X5 axis, three distinct balcony styles were achieved, balancing functional needs with architectural expression. The terrace integrates passive design principles, enabling natural ventilation and light through Low-E glass. This balances openness with thermal comfort, mitigating summer heat and improving winter heating efficiencya critical consideration during the COVID-19 pandemic design phase. Structure: The building's iconic form uses a steel rigid-frame structure with diagonal braces instead of conventional column-and-beam systems. This allows flexible column placement and minimizes visual obstructions on balconies. The facade has a rhythmic design, with balconies on both the left and right sides of each floor. Some balconies are triangular, while others span the entire bay. To achieve this design, we used a rigid frame structure with diagonal braces instead of the traditional column-and-beam structure. This approach allowed us to arrange the columns more flexibly, creating the desired space.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The signature feature is a balcony that offers a view of the city. The structure also provides guests with unique perspectives of Tokyo, which are not typically available in other city hotels. Columns and beams are compact (beam depth: 300 mm; column diameter: 150200 mm), hidden within walls to maximize natural light penetration. Curved walls in guest rooms blend indoor and outdoor spaces, enhancing spatial continuity. Interior: Seamless spaces with curved walls and diatomaceous earth wallpaper create a soft, diffused light environment. The microporous texture of the wallpaper and wall curvature enhance both visual and psychological comfort. Bathrooms are strategically placed away from openings to ensure privacy (critical in Chuo Ward's office-dense area). The washbasin is relocated outside the bathroom, reducing spatial confinement while maintaining functionality. Rather than pursuing overtly striking aesthetics, Kooo Architects focused on the " Terrace " concept to shape the hotel's identity. Variations in balcony designs directly correspond to room types, achieving a balanced mix. This project exemplifies Japan's ingenuity in transforming spatial constraints into value, offering a stay experience that authentically reflects Tokyo's urban density.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officePublished on March 22, 2025Cite: "Hotel Rakuragu / kooo architects" 22 Mar 2025.
