• Silent Hill f has been banned in Australia ahead of release
    www.digitaltrends.com
Australian authorities have said that Silent Hill fwill not be released in the country unless something changes, and it isnt clear what that something is. The Australian Classification Board (ACB) is similar to Americas Entertain Software Rating Board (ESRB) and has granted the game a rating of RC, which means Refused Classification. This followsSilent Hill f receiving the franchises first-ever 18+ rating in Japan. We still dont know a lot about the game, but one thing is clear: its a particularly brutal title, and probably not one for the faint of heart. The content of the game is so severe that Konami includes a warning on its Steam page:Recommended VideosThis game contains depictions of gender discrimination, child abuse, bullying, drug-induced hallucinations, torture, and graphic violence. Please enable Javascript to view this contentThis game is set in Japan in the 1960s and contains depictions based on the customs and culture of that time. These depictions do not reflect the opinions or values of the developers or any individuals involved. If you feel uncomfortable at any point while playing, please take a break from playing or speak to someone you trust.SILENT HILL f | Official Reveal Trailer (4K: EN/PEGI) | KONAMIThe ESRB rating provides a few more details. Aside from an M rating for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Partial Nudity, the rating summary also says, Cutscenes sometimes depict gore and intense acts of violence, including a character burned alive inside a cage and a character slicing off portions of a characters face during a ritual.Australia did not provide a reason for its rating. However, unless Konami makes changes to the game, it wont be released in the country at all.Whether you consider yourself a hardcore horror buff or someone new to the series, you might want to take a cautious approach to the latest entry in theSilent Hill franchise. It sounds like its going to be spine-chilling in the best ways, but any game that suggests taking a break and speaking to a trusted confidante is likely to try even the most veteran horror players.Editors Recommendations

  • I tested the future of AI image generation. Its astoundingly fast.
    www.digitaltrends.com
Table of ContentsTable of ContentsA massive breakthroughSolving the cost-computing crisisSome rough edgesOne of the core problems with AI is the notoriously high power and computing demand, especially for tasks such as media generation. On mobile phones, when it comes to running natively, only a handful of pricey devices with powerful silicon can run the feature suite. Even when implemented at scale on cloud, its a pricey affair.Nvidia may have quietly addressed that challenge in partnership with the folks over at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Tsinghua University. The team created a hybrid AI image generation tool called HART (hybrid autoregressive transformer) that essentially combines two of the most widely used AI image creation techniques. th result is a blazing fast tool with dramatically lower compute requirement.Recommended VideosJust to give you an idea of just how fast it is, I asked it to create an image of a parrot playing a bass guitar. It returned with the following picture in just about a second. I could barely even follow the progress bar. When I pushed the same prompt before Googles Imagen 3 model in Gemini, it took roughly 9-10 seconds on a 200 Mbps internet connection.MIT / HARTA massive breakthroughWhen AI images first started making waves, the diffusion technique was behind it all, powering products such as OpenAIs Dall-E image generator, Googles Imagen, and Stable Diffusion. This method can produce images with an extremely high level of detail. However, it is a multi-step approach to creating AI images, and as a result, it is slow and computationally expensive. The second approach that has recently gained popularity is auto-regressive models, which essentially work in the same fashion as chatbots and generate images using a pixel prediction technique. It is faster, but also a more error-prone method of creating images using AI.On-device demo for HART: Efficient Visual Generation with Hybrid Autoregressive TransformerThe team at MIT fused both methods into a single package called HART. It relies on an autoregression model to predict compressed image assets as a discrete token, while a small diffusion model handles the rest to compensate for the quality loss. The overall approach reduces the number of steps involved from over two dozen to eight steps. The experts behind HART claim that it can generate images that match or exceed the quality of state-of-the-art diffusion models, but do so about nine times faster. HART combines an autoregressive model with a 700 million parameter range and a small diffusion model that can handle 37 million parameters.MIT / HARTSolving the cost-computing crisisInterestingly, this hybrid tool was able to create images that matched the quality of top-shelf models with a 2 billion parameter capacity. Most importantly, HART was able to achieve that milestone at a nine times faster image generation rate, while requiring 31% less computation resources. As per the team, the low-compute approach allows HART to run locally on phones and laptops, which is a huge win. So far, the most popular mass-market products such as ChatGPT and Gemini require an internet connection for image generation as the computing happens in the cloud servers. In the test video, the team showcased it running natively on an MSI laptop with Intels Core series processor and an Nvidia GeForce RTX graphics card. Thats a combination you can find on a majority of gaming laptops out there, without spending a fortune, while at it.MIT / HARTHART is capable of producing 1:1 aspect ratio images at a respectable 1024 x 1024 pixels resolution. The level of detail in these images is impressive, and so is the stylistic variation and scenery accuracy. During their tests, the team noted that the hybrid AI tool was anywhere between three to six times faster and offered over seven times higher throughput. The future potential is exciting, especially when integrating HARTs image capabilities with language models. In the future, one could interact with a unified vision-language generative model, perhaps by asking it to show the intermediate steps required to assemble a piece of furniture, says the team at MIT. They are already exploring that idea, and even plan to test the HART approach at audio and video generation. You can try it out on MITs web dashboard. Some rough edges Before we dive into the quality debate, do keep in mind that HART is very much a research project that is still in its early stages. On the technical side, there are a few hassles highlighted by the team, such as overheads during the inference and training process.HART / Nadeem SarwarThe challenges can be fixed or overlooked, because they are minor in the bigger scheme of things here. Moreover, considering the sheer benefits HART delivers in terms of computing efficiency, speed, and latency, they might just persist without leading to any major performance issues. In my brief time prompt-testing HART, I was astonished by the pace of image generation. I barely ran into a scenario where the free web tool took more than two seconds to create an image. Even with prompts that span three paragraphs (roughly over 200 words in length), HART was able to create images that adhere tightly to the description.HART / Nadeem SarwarAside from descriptive accuracy, there was plenty of detail in the images. However, HART suffers from the typical failings of an AI image generator tool. It struggles with digits, basic depictions like eating food items, character consistency, and failing at perspective capture. Photorealism in human context is one area where I noticed glaring failures. On a few occasions, it simply got the concept of basic objects wrong, like confusing a ring with a necklace. But overall, those errors were far, few, and fundamentally expected. A healthy bunch of AI tools still cant get that right, despite being out there for a while now. Overall, I am particularly excited by the immense potential of HART. It would be interesting to see whether MIT and Nvidia create a product out of it, or simply adopt the hybrid AI image generation approach in an existing product. Either way, its a glimpse into a very promising future. Editors Recommendations

  • The 11 biggest differences between the 'Snow White' remake and the animated movie
    www.businessinsider.com
Marc Webb's "Snow White" remake largely follows the plot of the source material but makes key changes. In the new movie, Snow White isn't waiting for Prince Charming; she's dreaming of becoming a fair leader. The Evil Queen's death happens under completely different circumstances in the remake.Warning: Major spoilers ahead for the 2025 "Snow White" remake.Disney's "Snow White" got another modern-day spin, more than 80 years after the animated movie "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" hit theaters.Marc Webb's "Snow White," released on Friday, stars Rachel Zegler as the titular princess and Gal Gadot as her stepmother, the Evil Queen. While this is not the first and only "Snow White" retelling (see: "Snow White and the Huntsman" and "Mirror, Mirror"), it is the most paint-by-numbers remake of the 1937 film and the Brothers Grimm fairytale.Still, the new movie diverges from the source material in a few major ways. Here are the biggest changes.Snow White's name is a nod to the weather conditions when she was born.Rachel Zegler as Snow White in "Snow White." Disney In the animated movie, the titular character's name refers to her "skin white as snow." In the live-action remake, the movie opens by revealing that Snow White's name is an homage to the weather on the night of her birth. The princess was born on an evening when a blizzard swept through the land, leaving the kingdom in snow and ice.Her parents are a more crucial part of her origin story.Young Snow White and the king in "Snow White." Disney "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" does not mention Snow White's parents. Instead, the animated movie kicks off with a storybook passage explaining that Snow White's vain and wicked stepmother feared that someday the princess's beauty would surpass her own, so she dressed her in rags and forced her to work in the scullery. The 2025 movie starts with a similar storybook revealing that the kingdom was once ruled by Snow White's parents, the king and queen, and the land flourished under them.Snow White's parents taught her to lead with love and make it a point to remember people's names. They also baked apple pies and distributed them throughout the kingdom to share their wealth with the townspeople. After the queen falls ill and dies, the Evil Queen arrives, enchants the king, and marries him. It's only after they wed that she's revealed to be evil and power-hungry. The Evil Queen then warns the king of a threat beyond the kingdom and leaves to investigate it, but he never returns and the Evil Queen completely takes over. The huntsman gives the Evil Queen a box with an apple, not an animal heart. The Evil Queen orders the huntsman to kill Snow White, but he can't go through with it. Disney In the animated movie, the Evil Queen instructs the huntsman to kill Snow White in a secluded glade and bring her back her heart in a box as proof. He instead tells Snow White to flee into the woods and puts the heart of a pig in the box.In Webb's film, the huntsman lets Snow White escape and puts an apple in the box. Although this small change doesn't affect the plot, it avoids the unnecessary murder of an animal to trick the queen.Snow White has her own ambitions and isn't waiting around for her one true love.Zegler as Snow White. Disney One of the biggest critiques of the animated classic is that the heroine spends most of the movie daydreaming about her Prince Charming someday finding her. From the start of the 2025 movie, it's established that Snow White's destiny is to be a leader who's fearless, fair, brave, and true. "Someday My Prince Will Come" is replaced by a more empowering "I wish" song for Snow White, called "Waiting On A Wish."In the updated song, she sings about her hope to become her father's daughter and the kind leader she was raised to be.Her love interest, Jonathan, is a bandit, not a knight in shining armor.Andrew Burnap as Jonathan in "Snow White." Giles Keyte/Disney Prince Charming from the 1937 movie doesn't really have any discernible, distinguishing traits. He first encounters Snow White after hearing her singing beautifully and then wakes her from a sleeping death with love's first kiss after a lengthy search. In the modern-day reimagining, there's no Prince Charming on a white horse. Instead, he's replaced with Jonathan, the captain of a group of bandits.Snow White and Jonathan have a more balanced romance, one that starts with her rescuing him.Burnap as Jonathan and Zegler as Snow White in "Snow White." Giles Keyte/Disney Snow White and Jonathan first meet in the palace scullery, where she's been banished to clean. Snow White sees him stealing food for himself and the other bandits and is caught by the palace guards. As punishment, the Evil Queen chains him to the gate so he can freeze to death. Snow White saveshimby untying him and letting him run free. When Snow White later encounters Jonathan in the woods, she initially assumes he's just a selfish, common criminal, and he writes her off as an out-of-touch princess. But as they get to know each other, they realize there's more than meets the eye.Instead of running off for good when the guards detect them, Snow White tricks the enemies and returns to fight alongside the bandits, which surprises and impresses Jonathan.Meanwhile, Snow White's opinion of Jonathan changes and she develops romantic feelings for him after he selflessly takes an arrow for her and saves her life.Later, when Jonathan gets captured and thrown in the palace dungeon, he tells the huntsman that Snow White showed him how to have hope and courage.Snow White doesn't clean up the dwarfs' cottage when she arrives. The new version of Snow White doesn't need to cook or clean in order to stay at the cottage. Disney In the animated "Snow White," the princess cleans up the dwarfs' cottage to earn favor with the inhabitants, hoping they'll let her stay. After the dwarfs return from work and meet Snow White, she offers to keep the place clean and cook for them, as long as they let her stick around. The new movie avoids Snow White being relegated to the dwarfs' maid or chef. Upon arrival at the cottage, she falls asleep. When the dwarfs find her, they agree to let her stay with them to be out of harm's way. And during the musical number "Whistle While You Work," everyone gets involved in cleaning up the home. The Evil Queen killed Snow White's dad.Gal Gadot as the Evil Queen in "Snow White." Disney The king's unexplained disappearance is a big part of the remake. Snow White goes on a journey in search of him, with the help of the bandits, because she believes she can restore the old kingdom. When the Evil Queen, disguised as the hag, convinces Snow White to bite into the poisoned apple, she calls the old king a fool. At that moment, Snow White realizes that she's the Evil Queen in disguise and that her stepmother murdered her father.Dopey has his own character arc.Dopey in the 2025 live-action "Snow White" remake. Disney In the animated movie, the other dwarfs make fun of Dopey because he can't talk, or never tried to.In the 2025 film, a CGI Dopey is also silent and afraid to speak, but Snow White is kind is helps him find his voice. First, she teaches him to whistle, and he ends up being a natural.Later in the movie, when Snow White awakes from her sleeping death, she says that the kingdom is her destiny and that it's time to step into her role as a leader.Snow White warns the dwarfs that it'll be difficult because the Evil Queen will try to stop them. Then, to the surprise of everyone, Dopey says, "Let her try" and adds that they're not afraid anymore. At the end of the movie, it's revealed that he's actually the narrator.Snow White and the Evil Queen have a pivotal confrontation in which the princess spares her stepmother's life.Gadot as the Evil Queen and Zegler as Snow White in "Snow White." Giles Keyte/Disney There's no fight or standoff between Snow White and the Evil Queen in the original movie because by the time the princess wakes up, her stepmother has already fallen to her death. But in the remake, Snow White heads to the castle to take back the kingdom. In response, the Evil Queen tells Snow White that if she wants the throne, she has to kill her with a dagger she conjured.Predictably, Snow White refuses, so the Evil Queen gives the weapon to one of the palace guards and orders him to kill the princess.Recalling what her mom taught her about making it a point to remember peoples' names, Snow White stops the guard by calling him by his name, Paul. She also reminds him of how he used to be a farmer and share his grove of cherry trees with others. Then, Snow White calls out the names of the other guards, winning them over with her kindness and turning them against the Evil Queen.Snow White tells the Evil Queen to leave and never come back. But the villain tries to kill Snow White with the dagger. She's intercepted by the crossbow of the bandit named Quigg knocking the dagger out of her hand and turning it to dust. The Evil Queen's death is completely different than what happens in the animated movie.Gadot as the Evil Queen. Giles Keyte/Disney In the animated "Snow White," the dwarfs chase the Evil Queen (in her hag disguise) up a cliff. While trying to move a boulder toward the dwarfs to knock them over, a lightning bolt strikes the ledge, and the Evil Queen falls to her death, the boulder crashing down with her.Even though Snow White spares the Evil Queen's life in the remake, she still meets her demise. After running back to her room in the castle, the Evil Queen rushes to her Magic Mirror, who calls her vain and says that Snow White's beauty comes from deep within. Therefore, she'll always be superior to the Evil Queen. Angry, the Evil Queen smashes the mirror. In shattering the mirror, she also disintegrates into ashes that get pulled through the magic vortex, presumably into some kind of void.In the aftermath, Snow White becomes the new queen and restores the town to its former glory.

  • I was thrilled when my daughter was accepted to her dream school. I was crushed when weeks later I had to tell her we couldn't afford it.

2025-03-22T17:03:01Z Read in app Telling my daughter (not pictured) that she couldn't attend the school that I pushed her to apply to was one of the hardest conversations I've ever had. Georgijevic/Getty Images This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now.Have an account? I pushed my daughter to set her sites high and apply to a school that was out of her comfort zone. She was accepted to Tulane, but the financial aid package offered was smaller than we had expected.Telling her that she couldn't go to the dream school that I pushed her to apply to broke my heart.I sat anxiously across the table from my 17-year-old daughter, iPhone camera unsteadily in hand, leg shaking, ready to film as she opened the email on her laptop. At the time, I was just as nervous as she was, if not more. We spent more than three years working hard for this, with months spent essay-writing, and weeks of college visits all culminating in this moment. One quick click and then just like the TikTok I'd seen videos she jumped out of her chair and screams of excitement and happy dances ensued. She was accepted into Tulane University, her dream school. At the time, I had no idea that I would be the one to quash that dream just weeks later.Setting her sights highI've always believed in pushing my daughter past her comfort zone. So when it came time for college applications, I encouraged her to look beyond the familiar state schools that would keep her safely settled among her friend group and close to home, and instead consider places that would truly challenge and inspire her.Tulane University, nestled in the vibrant heart of New Orleans, was my suggestion. Initially hesitant about leaving the familiar comforts of our East Coast life, my daughter was quickly captivated once she visited the school. The campus buzzed with energy, the city pulsed with music and life and the school's rah-rah to academic rigor ratio seemed tailor-made for her. She came home donning a Tulane sweatshirt, excited about what the school had to offer, but still unsure about choosing a school so far away from friends and family. I reassured her that she would make new friends, and keep in touch with the old ones, and that the opportunity in front of her was priceless. The acceptance letter felt like a victory for both of us. It was a testament to my daughter's hard work and a vindication of my belief in her potential. Though more expensive than a state school, based on Tulane's net price calculator on their website (an estimate of what we would pay based on our financials and any merit aid she may be eligible for), the tuition seemed within our budget. My daughter's excitement was palpable as four years of adventure awaited her in the Big Easy. Sadly, the euphoria was short-lived.In the end, it all comes down to moneyThe financial aid package arrived a few weeks later, and the reality of the situation set in. The cost of attendance, even with the aid offered, was astronomical tens of thousands of dollars more than the calculator had assessed. It was a figure that simply wasn't feasible for our family. I sat in my office and cried. The conversation that followed was one of the hardest I've ever had. I had to tell my daughter, the girl whose dreams I had encouraged, that the school I pushed her to consider, and convinced her to apply to, was now off the table. As the tears welled up in her eyes and the color drained from her face I felt a physical pang in my chest. "I would have been fine going to a state school, but you'reI was sure that the original estimate would be on par with the financial aid offer. But this new number meant taking on a crippling amount in student loans I had only recently finished paying off my own student loans and it was a burden I didn't want to saddle my daughter with. I explained the financial realities and the importance of starting her adult life without a mountain of debt.I disappointed my child, but taught her an important lessonIt wasn't just about the money, though. It was about the crushing realization that, as a parent, I couldn't always provide everything my child wanted, even when she deserved it. I had pushed her to reach for the stars, and then pulled her right back down. The weeks that followed were filled with a quiet (and sometimes not-so-quiet) sadness. Thankfully, she was accepted to SUNY Binghamton, a top-rated state school, and in between bouts of crying, door-slamming, and an obvious longing for what could have been, she began to make the best out of the situation. Rather than go straight to school, she took a gap year to study in Israel, something she may not have been able to do had she gone to Tulane. As a parent, my job is to guide my daughter, to support her and to help her navigate the complexities of life. Sometimes, that means saying no, even when it breaks your heart.
