The garden strawberry (Fragaria ananassa) is a widely grown hybrid plant cultivated worldwide for its fruit. The genus Fragaria, the strawberries, is in the rose family, Rosaceae. The fruit is appreciated for its aroma, bright red colour, juicy texture, and sweetness. It is eaten either fresh or in prepared foods such as jam, ice cream, and chocolates. Artificial strawberry flavourings and aromas are widely used in commercial products. Botanically, the strawberry is not a berry, but an aggregate accessory fruit. Each apparent 'seed' on the outside of the strawberry is actually an achene, a botanical fruit with a seed inside it. The garden strawberry was first bred in Brittany, France, in the 1750s via a cross of F. virginiana from eastern North America and F. chiloensis, which was brought from Chile by Amde-Franois Frzier in 1714. Cultivars of F. ananassa have replaced the woodland strawberry F. vesca in commercial production. In 2023, world production of strawberries exceeded ten million tons, led by China with 40% of the total. These focus-stacked photographs show two garden strawberries, one whole and one halved.Photograph credit: Ivar LeidusRecently featured: Big Sky, MontanaWinter mothThe Hitch-HikerArchiveMore featured pictures

  • Fin-R1: A Specialized Large Language Model for Financial Reasoning and Decision-Making
    www.marktechpost.com
LLMs are advancing rapidly across multiple domains, yet their effectiveness in tackling complex financial problems remains an area of active investigation. The iterative development of LLMs has significantly driven the evolution of artificial intelligence toward artificial general intelligence (AGI). OpenAIs o1 series and similar models like QwQ and Marco-o1 have improved complex reasoning capabilities by extending chain-of-thought reasoning through an iterative exploration-reflection approach. In finance, models such as XuanYuan-FinX1-Preview and Fino1 have showcased the potential of LLMs in cognitive reasoning tasks. Meanwhile, DeepSeekR1 adopts a different strategy, relying solely on RL with multi-stage training to enhance reasoning and inference abilities. By combining thousands of unsupervised RL training steps with a small cold-start dataset, DeepSeekR1 demonstrates strong emergent reasoning performance and readability, highlighting the effectiveness of RL-based methodologies in improving large-scale language models.Despite these advancements, general-purpose LLMs struggle to adapt to specialized financial reasoning tasks. Financial decision-making requires interdisciplinary knowledge, including legal regulations, economic indicators, and mathematical modeling, while also demanding logical, step-by-step reasoning. Several challenges arise when deploying LLMs in financial applications. First, fragmented financial data complicates knowledge integration, leading to inconsistencies that hinder comprehensive understanding. Second, the black-box nature of LLMs makes their reasoning process difficult to interpret, conflicting with regulatory requirements for transparency and accountability. Finally, LLMs often struggle with generalization across financial scenarios, producing unreliable outputs in high-risk applications. These limitations pose significant barriers to their adoption in real-world financial systems, where accuracy and traceability are critical.Researchers from Shanghai University of Finance & Economics, Fudan University, and FinStep have developed Fin-R1, a specialized LLM for financial reasoning. With a compact 7-billion-parameter architecture, Fin-R1 reduces deployment costs while addressing key economic challenges: fragmented data, lack of reasoning control, and weak generalization. It is trained on Fin-R1-Data, a high-quality dataset containing 60,091 CoT sourced from authoritative financial data. A two-stage training approachSupervised Fine-Tuning (SFT) followed by RLFin-R1 enhances accuracy and interpretability. It performs well in financial benchmarks, excelling in financial compliance and robo-advisory applications. The study presents a two-stage framework for constructing Fin-R1. The data generation phase involves creating a high-quality financial reasoning dataset, Fin-R1-Data, through data distillation with DeepSeek-R1 and filtering using an LLM-as-judge approach. In the model training phase, Fin-R1 is fine-tuned on Qwen2.5-7B-Instruct using SFT and Group Relative Policy Optimization (GRPO) to enhance reasoning and output consistency. The dataset combines open-source and proprietary financial data, refined through rigorous filtering. Training integrates supervised learning and reinforcement learning, incorporating structured prompts and reward mechanisms to improve financial reasoning accuracy and standardization. The reasoning abilities of Fin-R1 in financial scenarios were evaluated through a comparative analysis against several state-of-the-art models, including DeepSeek-R1, Fin-R1-SFT, and various Qwen and Llama-based architectures. Despite its compact 7B parameter size, Fin-R1 achieved a notable average score of 75.2, ranking second overall. It outperformed all models of similar scale and exceeded DeepSeek-R1-Distill-Llama-70B by 8.7 points. Fin-R1 ranked highest in FinQA and ConvFinQA with scores of 76.0 and 85.0, respectively, demonstrating strong financial reasoning and cross-task generalization, particularly in benchmarks like Ant_Finance, TFNS, and Finance-Instruct-500K.In conclusion, Fin-R1 is a large financial reasoning language model designed to tackle key challenges in financial AI, including fragmented data, inconsistent reasoning logic, and limited business generalization. It delivers state-of-the-art performance by utilizing a two-stage training processSFT and RLon the high-quality Fin-R1-Data dataset. With a compact 7B parameter scale, it achieves scores of 85.0 in ConvFinQA and 76.0 in FinQA, outperforming larger models. Future work aims to enhance financial multimodal capabilities, strengthen regulatory compliance, and expand real-world applications, driving innovation in fintech while ensuring efficient and intelligent financial decision-making.Check outTwitterand dont forget to join our85k+ ML SubReddit. www.ign.com
The Google Pixel lineup of smartphones is one of the best and most popular out there alongside the Apple iPhone and Samsung Galaxy lineups. Over the years, Google has cemented the Pixel as one of the best Android smartphones around, but it can be challenging to recall each and every model since the first one dropped back in 2016. Below, we've compiled every Google Pixel smartphone and its release date. If you've ever been keen to explore how Google upgraded its flagship phone lineup over the years, there has never been a better time! How Many Google Pixel Generations Have There Been?In total, there have been 17 different Google Pixel generations. This list does not include separate listings for Pro or XL models, but we have included separate Pixel models like the a and Fold series.Every Google Pixel Generation in Order of ReleaseGoogle Pixel - October 20, 2016Google Pixel was the first phone in the Pixel line, launching in October 2016. At the time, this was one of the first smartphones to take advantage of USB-C, with the device also packing in a 12.3 megapixel camera. Both a Pixel and Pixel XL were offered, with the latter featuring a larger display.Google Pixel 2 - October 17, 2017Google Pixel 2 was relased just one year after the original Pixel in October 2017. Google also made some significant improvements to the camera system, including support for optical image stabilization. Above all else, the Pixel 2 was also notorious for removing the headphone jack, while at least addressing some Bluetooth issues from the first model.Google Pixel 3 - October 18, 2018The Google Pixel 3 made many noticable changes for users. First, the bezels surrounding the display were drastically slimmed down compared to both Google Pixel and Google Pixel 2. As a result, the resolution of the screen was also made higher, with an increase of 12.5% and a shift to a 5.5" display. Pixel 3 also introduced wireless charging, allowing users to charge the device without the need for a USB-C cable.Google Pixel 3a - May 7, 20192019 marked the first time that Google offered mid-range smartphones to the market, with the Google Pixel 3a acting as a cheaper companion to the flagship Google Pixel 3. Although the Pixel 3a released after the Pixel 3, this model ommitted a few things here and there, but it at least kept the flagship's back camera system intact. You can read our review of the Pixel 3a for what we thought about it when it first came out.Google Pixel 4 - October 15, 2019Google Pixel 4 was a quiet upgrade that focused much more on internals. The Fold featured many of the beloved Google Pixel 7 Pro camera features, and the unique design allowed for numerous camera angles by using half the phone as a stand.Google Pixel 8 - October 12, 2023Google Pixel 8 was a decent upgrade from the Pixel 7 line, with some major features being a peak brightness of 2000 nits and a refresh rate of 120Hz. This phone launched on October 12, 2023, just a few months after Google debuted the wildly unique Google Pixel Fold.Google Pixel 8Running on a G3 Tensor chip, youll enjoy solid cameras, smart AI functions, and a bright, beautiful OLED display for an affordable price.See it at AmazonGoogle Pixel 8a - May 14, 2024Google Pixel 8a was launched on May 14, 2024. This model dropped the Gorilla Glass Victus, opting for Gorilla Glass 3 on the display. While both have an OLED display and sport similar performance, the real difference lies in the cameras on back. The Pixel 8 has a 50MP main camera while the Pixel 8a has a 64MP camera. This led to higher pixel count but less depth due to the supporting cameras and sensors on the Pixel 8.Google Pixel 9 - August 22, 2024Google Pixel 9 was launched in August 2024. This broke from a years-long tradition of launching new Pixel flagship models in October, but it seems likely that this new release strategy could be here to stay. Pixel 9 brought Satellite SOS features, a completely new design, and a triple rear camera. The Pro series even brought it up to 16GB of RAM, which is a huge leap forward for Pixel as a whole.Google Pixel 9 ProAn elegant design, exceptional cameras, a quality display, and extensive software support make the Pixel 9 Pro a champ among smartphones. Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold - September 4, 2024The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold is the latest phone in the Pixel line, featuring a foldable display that builds off the 2023 Pixel Fold. The display is now taller and thinner, allowing for a bigger screen on the device. OLED displays can be found on both the front and interior screens, with the outer display sitting at 6.3 inches and the inner screen at 8 inches. With three rear facing cameras and 16GB of RAM, the Pixel 9 Fold Pro is Google's premier phone at the moment.Preorder the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold 256GBSee it at AmazonWhen Is the Google Pixel 10 Coming Out?It is expected that Google will release the Google Pixel 10 lineup, including the Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL, sometime in Fall 2025. While in the past Google has traditionally stuck to October for these releases, the Pixel 9 was released in August 2024, so it is plausible that Google will launch the Pixel 10 lineup in August 2025 as well.Noah Hunter is a freelance writer and reviewer with a passion for games and technology. • Minecraft's 'Vibrant Visuals' Upgrade the Start of a New 'Graphical Journey'
    www.ign.com
Freshly revealed at Minecraft Live, a major new graphical update is on the way to Minecraft, titled "Vibrant Visuals."This upcoming upgrade will initially be released for compatible Minecraft: Bedrock Edition devices, but there are plans to bring Vibrant Visuals to Minecraft: Java Edition in the future. It includes improved visual elements such as directional lighting, volumetric fog, pixelated shadows, and noticeably shimmering water. Purely a visual enhancement, Vibrant Visuals makes no changes to Minecrafts gameplay. For example, "visual shadows will not impact light levels in a game-mechanics sense, or affect where hostile mobs spawn."Minecraft Vibrant Visuals Comparison ScreenshotsPlayers will be able to toggle between the new and previously existing visuals of Minecraft with the simple press of a button, meaning a classic look can be maintained by those who desire it.So the first release is actually in a few months time for the beta platforms, Agnes Larsson, Minecraft Vanillas game director, said. There's a lot of testing going on now to try to get it to as many platforms as possible, but it's important that it's high quality and good performance. So yeah, this truly is the start of the journey. That journey towards Minecrafts new look was further detailed by Maddie Psenka, senior product manager on Vibrant Visuals:I think it's been a journey for a while. Something that we've wanted to do for the game. There has been past projects that we've had around graphics and wanting to do this kind of update, but I think this time we really wanted to take the space to build the foundations for this new mode. Not getting too ahead of things, making sure things were cross-platform and were really strong so we could build on top of that and release that with the community. We really wanted to give players what they wanted. We know this kind of visual update is something that they've been asking for a bit.We weren't going as fast as we could on PC to make things look really great and call it done, Psenka continued. We wanted to make sure it worked on mobile, worked on console. There's a lot of complexities of course, as you can imagine when jumping across platforms and the different backends there. But it's something that we really took our time with to put something forward that we really are proud of.PlayThis is just the start of a new graphical journey for Minecraft, one that will improve and evolve over the next several years as the team at Mojang balance that classic Minecraft aesthetic with wanting to make it look more like a "modern game.""As Minecraft continues to evolve, I think we'll find new things to add to the graphics over the years, right? Jasper Boerstra, Minecrafts art director, said.I mean, we're always active development and we're here to stay for a long time. Minecraft is always going on. It's more relevant than ever. So yeah, I think these graphic updates, whenever something comes up or we get new ideas or there's player feedback and forth, we might look into even more features.Vibrant Visuals is a free update coming to Minecraft in the near future, as Mojang continues to refuse to heavily monetize the best-selling game of all time further. This philosophy of improving and expanding the original game also goes hand-in-hand with the studios desire to not make a Minecraft 2, or take advantage of generative AI technology. It may be 15 years old now, but theres truly no sign of Minecraft slowing down.Check out everything announced at Minecraft Live 2025 for more on what's coming to the game.Simon Cardy is a Senior Editorial Producer who can mainly be found skulking around open world games, indulging in Korean cinema, or despairing at the state of Tottenham Hotspur and the New York Jets.
