  • Worlds First ECG Smart Ring Gives You a Free Personal AI Coach Without Monthly Fees like Google or Oura
    www.yankodesign.com
Smart rings are having a moment, and for good reason. Wearables used to be all about the wristbulky smartwatches that buzzed with notifications and demanded daily charging. But health tracking is evolving, shifting to something smaller, subtler, and more intelligent. Companies like Oura, Samsung, Ultrahuman, and RingConn have all entered the smart ring space, but Circular Ring 2 is doing things differently by measuring your data, but not bogging you down with metrics. With a medical-grade EDC (the first on a smart ring), and a free personalized AI coach, the Circular Ring 2 gathers medical and fitness data and uses it to guide you with AI-powered insights, relying on a human-like advice-based approach instead of throwing large numbers and charts at you the way most fitness trackers and wearables do all with zero subscription fees.Your doctor doesnt tell you your blood pressure level and ask you to figure stuff out, right? Instead, they use that data to come up with a diagnosis. The diagnosis then leads to a doctors prescription, which is meaningful advice tailor-made to your condition, based on your data. The Circular Ring 2 brings the same approach to health wearables relying on an AI coach that pushes you on the right track.Designer: CircularClick Here to Buy Now: $239 $550 ($311 off). Hurry, only 6/2455 left! Raised over $1.2 million.Unlike a smartwatch, which relies on data from the wrist, a smart ring gathers information from the finger, where blood flow is stronger and signals are clearer. This allows the Circular Ring 2 to deliver precise, medical-grade readings on heart rate, HRV, sleep quality, SpO, temperature, stress levelswithout any of the bulk or distractions of a screen. With 140+ biometrics tracked, it does more than just collect numbers. It connects the dots. The Circular Ring 2 dives deep into your bodys signals, monitoring over 13 key health metrics with medical-grade precision. It tracks heart rate, heart rate variability (HRV), sleep quality, blood oxygen (SpO), skin temperature, respiratory rate, and stress levelsall from the most accurate location possible: your finger. The ring also includes womens health tracking, energy level assessments, recovery analysis, and movement tracking, ensuring that every aspect of your wellness is covered. The ring continuously measures biometrics every 2 minutes, delivering 5 times the data points of standard fitness trackers. Whether its detecting early signs of illness, optimizing athletic recovery, or improving sleep, the Circular Ring 2 works behind the scenes to help you understand your body in real-time.Powering this experience is Kira, an AI-driven health coach that doesnt just spit out stats but actually interprets them. Rather than flooding you with raw data, Kira provides actionable insights tailored to your unique patterns. If your stress levels spike, it wont just throw a metric at youyoull instead get suggestions for breathing exercises or routine adjustments. Sleep feeling off? Kira will identify patterns and help you fix them. The real value isnt just in knowing whats happening in your body but in understanding why and what to do next.No subscriptions, No hidden feesThe best part is that the AI assistant works without any add-on cost. Unlike Googles Pixel Watch, which requires an additional subscription to Fitbit Premium for the AI health features, or Oura and Whoop, which require a monthly fee just to unlock meaningful health insights, the Circular Ring 2 doesnt follow a freemium model. In fact, it takes the opposite approach: one purchase, lifetime access. Every feature, from stress analysis to AI-driven recommendations, is included without any ongoing cost. Thats a bold move in an industry that loves putting its best features behind a paywall. The app is your go-to destination for all your metrics and insights. Circular even developed meaningful health widgets that can live permanently on your home screen (so you get quick access to data rather than needing to open the app), with seamless integration to Apple HealthKit & Google Health Connect. Your data is anonymized and handled with strict privacy protocols that are compliant with GDPR and EU regulations, which means no third party gets any access to your health data. Youre the only person with access to your health data, and you can even share the data with a partner within the app. People with elderly parents can monitor their vitals remotely (and securely), getting real-time readings for peace of mind. For a fitness ring, the Circular 2 has an industry-matching battery capacity of a week. Thats a far higher number than most smartwatches (my Apple Watch Series 10 needs charging every single day even with the always-on display off), but its fairly standard for smart rings. After all, theres no screen to drain the battery which is what honestly makes it MUCH more appealing than watches. The included charging case extends that even further, meaning you can go almost a month without needing to plug it into a wall. The rings come in US sizes from 5 to 13, but rather than shipping you a plastic sizing kit before sending you the ring, Circulars developed a brilliant digital sizing tool that lets you measure from your phone in seconds. No waiting, no extra packaging, just a fast and precise way to ensure a perfect fit. The ring itself is crafted from lightweight titanium, in a sleek premium design available in Obsidian Black, Gold, Silver, and Rose Gold, and is fully waterproof. Whether youre working out, swimming, or just going about your day, it feels effortless to wear.If youre considering a smart ring, the pricing is compelling, and the timing couldnt be more perfect. Backers on Kickstarter can grab the Circular Ring 2 at a Super Early Bird price of $239, a significant discount from its future retail price. Compared to the Oura Gen 3, which costs more upfront and requires a monthly subscription, this ring is a serious contender for those looking to track their health without recurring fees. Smart rings are slowly but surely becoming the next frontier in health tech, with their accurate sensing tech and their substantially long battery lives. The Circular Ring 2 adds a layer of AI-driven insights on top, making them perfect for anyone looking to be nudged in the right direction rather than be bogged down by overwhelming numbers and graphs. If smart rings are the future, this might be one of the best glimpses of whats coming next.Click Here to Buy Now: $239 $550 ($311 off). Hurry, only 6/2455 left! • M4 Mac mini may have been one of Apples greatest gifts to aspiring creatives
    9to5mac.com
Apple announced the redesigned Mac mini with M4 chip last October. Its by no means a new product at this point, and its coming up on 6 months old. However, I think it may be one of Apples greatest gifts to up and coming creators, developers, and all sorts of creative professionals. Its no secret that Apple Silicon has enabled Apple to ship far more performant chipsets in lower end machines. Before the transition to Apple Silicon, a MacBook Air being able to edit 4K video sufficiently was nothing but a dream. Wanted to compile an Xcode project on your lap with an Intel MacBook Air? Good luck.Apple Silicon, in a way, made Macs much more affordable. You no longer needed a 16 MacBook Pro, for example, to get a high-end chipset in a laptop. On top of that, certain Macs straight up became less expensive. The 2018 Mac mini used to start at $799, and it lowered to just $699 with the M1 model. With the M2 model, it became $599.I know a lot of people who used to buy high end 15 and 16 MacBook Pros in the Intel days, who were now able to get away with a MacBook Air with a couple RAM and SSD upgrades. Its a great thing. The new Mac mini takes high end performance at an affordable price-point to a new extreme. It equips 16GB of RAM by standard, which was previously a $200 upgrade. The M4 chip is also incredibly performant and all of this is available in a package that you can purchase for just $499 if youre a student, $599 otherwise. In short, this computer is an incredible gift to any aspiring developers or creative professionals. Ive been using the base model Mac mini as my main desktop since December, and the fact that it delivers all that it does at its price point is nothing short of a miracle. Back when I bought my first Mac in 2019, if you wanted something for $499, you wouldnt get more than a dual core processor, and you certainly wouldnt be getting it brand new. The barrier-to-entry to get into the Mac ecosystem is as low as its ever been. Thats something worth appreciating. One more thing: M4 Mac mini is currently on sale for $499 on Amazon, allowing anyone to pick one up at what would normally be student-only pricing. • Scientists Find Strong Link Between Drinking Sugary Soda and Getting Cancer
    futurism.com
Image by Getty / FuturismCancerIn a new study, scientists have found an alarming link between sugary soda and oral cancer.AsUnited Press Internationalreports, new research out of the University of Washingtonfound that women who drink at least one full-sugar soft drink per day appear to be about five times more likely to get oral cavity cancer (OCC) than their counterparts who avoid such beverages.Typically thought of as a cancer primarily affecting older men who smoke and drink, instances of OCC have, asUPInotes, been rising steadily among women including those who don't smoke or drink, or do so sparingly. The five-year survival rate for OCC, which causes painful sores on either the lips or the gums and can spread down the throat if left untreated, is only 64.3 percent. In a new paper published in the journal JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery, the University of Washington researchers looked at long-term healthcare data for more than 162,000 healthcare workers from the Nurses' Health Study and identified 124 cases of OCC among them. Crunching the numbers, the researchers found that people who drink at least one sugary soda beverage per day were at a 4.87 times greater risk of developing OCC than their counterparts who had less than one such drink per month. For those who don't smoke or drink or do so lightly the numbers were even more stark: those who consumed one or more sugary soda per day were 5.46 more likely to develop OCC than people who drink less than one per month. The paper only establishes correlation, not causation, but the results are pretty striking. Brittany Barber, an assistant professor of otolaryngology head and neck surgery who led the research with her colleagues at UW, toldUPI that rising rates of this type of cancer among women are "alarming."Until now, sugary soft drinks have not been studied as one of the culprits behind that rate rise among nonsmokers especially after rates of OCC related to smoking have seen a steady decline thanks to successful anti-smoking campaigns and legislature. In 2020, the report notes, there were 355,000 new cases of OCC and 177,000 deaths globally. Despite being far "less common than breast or colon cancer," as Barber notes, that's still a pretty grim ratio of deaths to diagnoses.Rather than implying that the sugar from sodas themselves is causing people to get OCC, the researchers hypothesize that "diets with higher added sugar may contribute to chronic inflammation." Previous studies have connected excessive consumption of sugary drinks with gum disease which, in turn, has been linked to oral cancer. There will obviously need to be more research to pin down this apparent connection but in the meantime, cutting out full-sugar sodas, or soft drinks completely, may be your best bet for avoiding mouth cancer.Share This Article

  • How Careless People is becoming a bigger problem for Meta
    www.theverge.com
Meta has aggressively pushed to discredit and silence Sarah Wynn-Williams, the author of Careless People, her memoir about working at the company as a policy director. Now, shes fighting back. Attorneys for Wynn-Williams this week filed an emergency motion seeking to dismiss the gag order that Meta won via an arbitrator. A copy of her motion, which Ive seen, argues that the nondisparagement agreement she signed when she left the company isnt enforceable, while Meta has used it as the legal basis for banning her from talking about the book. Naturally, the Streisand effect is on full display. Careless People debuted at the top of The New York Times Best Seller list. Its now also of interest to multiple governments. Members of the United States Congress, the Parliament of the United Kingdom, and the Parliament of the European Union have requested to speak with Ms. Wynn-Williams on the issues of public concern raised in her memoir, her motion to lift the gag order reads. These include Metas coordination with the Chinese Communist Party, its exploitation of emotionally vulnerable teenage girls, and its conduct in this very arbitration.Facebooks decade-old effort to operate in China was heavily reported on at the time. Remember when Mark Zuckerberg was learning to speak Mandarin and jogging through Tiananmen Square? Whatever the reason for Wynn-Williams resurfacing the saga now, her timing is certainly apt.Zuckerberg is in the process of reorienting his company to be politically aligned with the Trump administration and making regular visits to the White House to discuss American technology leadership. If I wanted to throw a wrench in those conversations, especially when DeepSeek has reframed the debate about how the US should approach the AI arms race with China, Id resurface that Zuckerberg was willing to censor on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party. (In what Im sure is another coincidence of timing, Meta will be defending itself against the US government wanting to break it up next month.)If I had to guess, well be hearing more from Wynn-Williams now that lawmakers have taken an interest in her story. Even though she has been barred from promoting her book, members of Congress could subpoena her, which would give legal cover to let her speak freely again. Meta spokesman Andy Stone tells me that the company has no intention of interfering with anyones rights under the law. There are parallels to Wynn-Williams and Frances Haugen, Metas last well-known, ex-employee agitator. Both women filed SEC whistleblower complaints (which can result in monetary awards) before taking their stories to the media. And both positioned themselves as sober-minded, skeptical outsiders who unsuccessfully tried to make positive change from within. Unlike Haugen, however, Wynn-Williams doesnt provide receipts. Most of the criticism of Careless People from Meta insiders focuses on details in the book they claim were distorted or completely fabricated. While her book contains kernels of truth, it is riddled with factual inaccuracies, exaggerations, and omissions, including things she writes about myself and my teams work on elections (though we are never directly named.), writes Katie Harbath, an early Facebook policy leader who has her own book coming soon. And when the facts are wrong, the broader conversation about Facebooks role in the world gets lost.Others have chimed in to refute Wynn-Williams retelling of events. Dex Hunter-Torricke, Facebooks former head of executive communications, contests how she describes a game of Settlers of Catan with Mark Zuckerberg during a work trip in Indonesia. And Facebooks former CMO, Gary Briggs, says that Wynn-Williams made up details about a karaoke session he was present for on Zuckerbergs private jet. Most of the pushback from ex-colleagues focuses on the way Wynn-Williams writes about ex-COO Sheryl Sandberg and policy chief Joel Kaplan. She alleges that both made inappropriate comments to her and that Kaplan went so far as to grind on her while dancing. (Meta says Kaplan was cleared in an internal investigation before Wynn-Williams was fired.) Careless People is at its best when it focuses on Wynn-Williams inner monologue and experience of discovering the quirks of working in Silicon Valley. However, her repeated shock that the company makes decisions in the interest of its business over everything else starts to feel old after a while. Weve seen this story before, and we know how it ends.I was surprised to see that Facebook cofounder Dustin Moskovitz, who has historically shied away from openly criticizing the company that made him a billionaire, endorses the book. Brooke Oberwetter, a former Facebook policy manager whose time at the company overlapped with the period Wynn-Williams writes about, also recommends it. I cant fact check the whole book (and neither can anyone else), but I can say that the meetings and events I was a part of that are recounted in the book (and things that were relayed to me by others contemporaneously) are accurately represented, she writes on LinkedIn. Maybe more importantly, the vibe she captured is spot on. It was just all so juvenile.Ultimately, Careless People is a test for how you feel about Meta. For many, it only reaffirms the belief that the companys leaders are ruthless, immoral capitalists. For others, its a hit job that bends reality to enforce a familiar narrative. I wish it challenged both sides.ElsewhereGoogle takes another shot at Wiz: Googles plan to buy Wiz is a good reminder that Google is really a collection of companies. Here, the acquirer is Google Cloud, which hasnt been able to close the market share gap with AWS and Azure. Maybe Wizs security offerings will help, especially as AI models get deployed across the corporate world. Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurians note to employees about the $32 billion acquisition (which represents a third of Googles cash balance) acknowledges that the growing adoption of AI has accelerated the threats both to and from AI models. Based on Googles track record of integrating expensive acquisitions, its main threat will probably be navigating the internal politics if the deal gets approved by regulators.More headlines: Elon Musk told Tesla employees to hold on to their stock in a surprise all-hands meeting Oracle is re-pitching Project Texas in DC to save TikTok Nvidia announced its next AI chips Samsung knows its in a do-or-die situation... • Italy demands Google poison DNS under strict Piracy Shield law
    arstechnica.com
That's a spicy DNS Italy demands Google poison DNS under strict Piracy Shield law A lawsuit claims Google has not blocked football streams as required in Italy. Ryan Whitwam Mar 21, 2025 3:52 pm | 47 Credit: Aurich Lawson Credit: Aurich Lawson Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreItaly is using its Piracy Shield law to go after Google, with a court ordering the Internet giant to immediately begin poisoning its public DNS servers. This is just the latest phase of a campaign that has also targeted Italian ISPs and other international firms like Cloudflare. The goal is aimed at preventing illegal football streams, but the effort has already caused collateral damage. Regardless, Italy's communication regulator praises the ruling and hopes to continue sticking it to international tech firms. The Court of Milan issued this ruling in response to a complaint that Google failed to block pirate websites after they were identified by the national communication regulator, known as AGCOM. The court found that the sites in question were involved in the illegal streaming of Series A football matches, which has been a focus of anti-piracy crusaders in Italy for years. Since Google offers a public DNS service, it is subject to the site-blocking law.Piracy Shield is often labeled as draconian by opponents because blocking content via DNS is messy. It blocks the entire domain, which has led to confusion when users rely on popular platforms to distribute pirated content. Just last year, Italian ISPs briefly blocked the entire Google Drive domain because someone, somewhere used it to share copyrighted material. This is often called DNS poisoning or spoofing in the context of online attacks, and the outcome is the same if it's being done under legal authority: a DNS record is altered to prevent someone typing a domain name from being routed to the correct IP address.Spotted by TorrentFreak, AGCOM Commissioner Massimiliano Capitanio took to LinkedIn to celebrate the ruling, as well as the existence of the Italian Piracy Shield. "The Judge confirmed the value of AGCOM's investigations, once again giving legitimacy to a system for the protection of copyright that is unique in the world," said Capitanio.Capitanio went on to complain that Google has routinely ignored AGCOM's listing of pirate sites, which are supposed to be blocked in 30 minutes or less under the law. He noted the violation was so clear-cut that the order was issued without giving Google a chance to respond, known as inaudita altera parte in Italian courts. This decision follows a similar case against Internet backbone firm Cloudflare. In January, the Court of Milan found that Cloudflare's CDN, DNS server, and WARP VPN were facilitating piracy. The court threatened Cloudflare with fines of up to 10,000 euros per day if it did not begin blocking the sites.Google could face similar sanctions, but AGCOM has had difficulty getting international tech behemoths to acknowledge their legal obligations in the country. By the late 1800s, "dope" was used to describe someone under the influence of drugs, and "dopey" came to mean dazed, sluggish, or slow-witted, like someone affected by drugs. Over time, it also took on a more playful or mild sense, meaning foolish or silly.Let me know how you fared with your Wordle today on Twitter, Instagram or Facebook. • Northern Lights: Quick Pro Tips For Smartphones As Strong Aurora Predicted
    www.forbes.com
The aurora from the Aurora Sky Station, Abisko National park, Sweden, on March 22, 2025, using an ... More iPhone 16 Pro Max.Jamie CarterJust a few years ago, it was impossible to take usable imagery of the Northern Lights with a smartphone. However, thanks to advances in low-light performance, thats all changed, with the latest models (and even those a few years old) able to take spectacular photos and impressive videos of colorful aurora. You just have to know what youre doing.Smartphones are now amazing aurora cameras, said Tom Kerss, author of "The Northern Lights: The Definitive Guide to Auroras and chief aurora hunter for Hurtigruten Astronomy Cruises, in an interview. I used to believe our phones would never take a good aurora photo, he said, but I cant believe how much detail theyre able to pick up now.Theyre now so good, in fact, that professional aurora-hunters use a smartphone photo to check that what they are seeing in the sky is, in fact, aurora. Thats because aurora tends to look rather mono to the naked eye. On the other hand, a camera takes in more light simply because its shutter can be left open for a few seconds or more and therefore detects more color.Heres everything you need to know to take photos and video of the Northern Lights with a smartphone:Northern Lights: How To Take Videos With A SmartphoneIt used to be something only very expensive high ISO cameras could do, but since iPhone 13 its been possible to take impressive video of the Northern Lights. However, you need to do this: shoot in HD at 30 frames per second. Most of us shoot at 4k and 60 frames per second, which is fine for daylight but a lot dimmer at night. Just dont move the phone too quickly, or it will get very smudgy, said Kerss, explaining the side effect of the drop in frame rate at HD 30. Slower movements will look better. The aurora from the Aurora Sky Station, Abisko National park, Sweden, on March 22, 2025, using an ... More iPhone 16 Pro Max.Jamie CarterNorthern Lights: How To Take Photos With A SmartphoneThe key to the improvements in smartphone cameras is their sensitivity to light at night. For photos on an iPhone, turn the flash off, use the highest resolution or quality you can get, and use Night mode, said Kerss. On the iPhone, Night Mode is the yellow bubble in the top-left corner, which appears at night. It will typically read three seconds. If you set the phone to capture in RAW or in the highest resolution or quality possible, then just hold still for three seconds, an iPhone will reliably take very nice pictures of the Northern Lights, said Kerss. This applies from the iPhone 13 onwards, which, according to Kerss, is as good as any manual camera.Android users have two useful tools: night mode for automatic low-light shots, and Pro mode for full manual control. In Pro mode, you can adjust shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. A wide aperture (such as f/2.8 or lower) lets in more light while boosting ISO to 6400 or higher, which helps reveal faint aurora.Northern Lights: Using A Tripod And Manual CamerasIf you put an iPhone in a universal holder and mount that on a tripod, it senses its new-found stability. If you have a tripod, you can get longer than three-second exposures you can go up to 30 seconds, said Kerrs, adding that tripods are useful for very slight, slow-moving, so-called forest fire aurora in the distance. If you can see aurora moving quickly in front of you or above you, as quick an exposure as possible is recommended. If you use manual camera apps or a manual mirrorless or DSLR camera use a high ISO (such as ISO 3200 or ISO 6400, or even higher on newer cameras) to allow more light in. Higher ISO lets in more light but at the expense of noise, but the latter can be fixed later using software like DXO PureRAW.While its tempting to focus on getting the perfect shot, dont forget to enjoy the experience seeing the Northern Lights dance in the night sky is a rare and wonderful experience. Luckily, getting a souvenir photo or video has never been easier.Wishing you clear skies and wide eyes.
