The Artemis II test flight will send astronauts Christina Koch, Victor Glover, Reid Wiseman, and Jeremy Hansen on the same route, orbiting the moon before returning to Earth in a mission expected to last about 10 days. The voyage will help to confirm the foundational systems and hardware needed for human deep space exploration, which could eventually involve crewed missions to Mars. The immediate goal, however, is to return humans to the lunar surface in the Artemis III mission that NASA is currently targeting for 2027.The Artemis II astronauts have been in training ever since they were announced for the mission in April 2023. NASA has been sharing occasional updates about their preparations, which have included work on safely exiting from the Orion spacecraft should an emergency situation occur immediately after splashdown at the end of the mission.Gl0ver and Wiseman also recently appeared in a NASA video explaining how theyll be putting the Orion spacecraft through its paces during what should be an incredible lunar adventure.Editors Recommendations

  • Ray Dalio says he had a 'frank' discussion with the GOP about US debt and the 'mechanics behind how countries go broke'

Ray Dalio said the US budget deficit needs to be cut to about 3% of GDP so that debt servicing costs will not "severely squeeze out the government's ability to spend." Ray Dalio met with House Budget Chair Jodey Arrington and House Republicans on Tuesday.Dalio told lawmakers to cut the budget deficit to about 3% of GDP.Dalio has repeatedly warned of the economic dangers that come with soaring deficits.Ray Dalio, the founder of hedge fund Bridgewater Associates, said he had a discussion with House Budget Chair Jodey Arrington and other House Republicans about the national debt on Tuesday."I appreciate our ability to have a frank apolitical discussion about the mechanics behind how countries go broke as it applies to the circumstances at hand," Dalio said in a statement about the meeting on Tuesday.Arrington thanked Dalio for meeting with them, adding that Dalio had "sounded the alarm to Members of Congress on the urgent need to address our unsustainable and exponentially growing borrowing and spending."Dalio said in his statement that there was a "pretty broad recognition" among attendees that the budget deficit needs to be cut to around 3% of the country's GDP. Dalio added that this cut will ensure that debt servicing costs do not "squeeze out the government's ability to spend.""I look forward to staying in touch about these issues and having similar discussions with others so that there are realistic assessments of the issues and what might be done to deal with them," Dalio said.Dalio has previously sounded warnings about the economic dangers of soaring debt levels.Last month, Dalio said in an interview at the World Governments Summit in Dubai that America could suffer the financial equivalent of a "heart attack" if it didn't reduce its deficit spending."Waiting too long is like ignoring plaque buildup until a heart attack occurs," Dalio said in February. The federal government collected $4.92 trillion in revenue in the 2024 fiscal year but spent about $6.75 trillion. That created a deficit of $1.83 trillion a $138 billion increase in debt from the previous fiscal year.Dalio said in an interview on Bloomberg's "Odd Lots" podcast, which aired earlier this month that the US could face a debt crisis in the next three years if it didn't act fast."If you don't do that, then you own it, OK? You have to take responsibility for the consequences," Dalio told Bloomberg."When the economy and this heart attack of sorts comes along, then you're going to find yourself that the voters are not going to be very happy. So you own it," he continued.A representative for Dalio did not respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

  • CoreWeave is on the cusp of a huge IPO — but it could face an expensive hardware problem

Bruno de Carvalho/SOPA Images/LightRocket via Getty Images 2025-03-26T06:27:35Z SaveSaved Read in app This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Become an Insider and start reading now.Have an account? Rapid AI advancements may reduce the useful life of CoreWeave's Hopper-based Nvidia GPUs.CoreWeave has a lot of Hopper-based GPUs, which are becoming outdated due to the Blackwell rollout.Amazon recently cut the estimated useful life of its servers, citing AI advancements.I recently wrote about Nvidia's latest AI chip-and-server package and how this new advancement may dent the value of the previous product.Nvidia's new offering likely caused Amazon to reduce the useful life of its AI servers, which took a big chunk out of earnings.Other Big Tech companies, such as Microsoft, Google, and Meta, may have to take similar tough medicine, according to analysts. This issue might also impact Nvidia-backed CoreWeave, a startup that's planning one of the biggest tech IPOs in years.CoreWeave is a so-called neocloud, specializing in generative AI workloads that rely mostly on Nvidia GPUs and servers.Like its bigger rivals, CoreWeave has been buying oodles of Nvidia GPUs and renting them out over the internet. The startup had deployed more than 250,000 GPUs by the end of 2024, per its filing to go public. These are incredibly valuable assets. Tech companies and startups have been jostling for the right to buy Nvidia GPUs in recent years, so any company that has amassed a quarter of a million of these components has done very well. There's a problem, though. AI technology is advancing so rapidly that it can make existing gear obsolete, or at least less useful, more quickly. This is happening now as Nvidia rolls out its latest AI chip-and-server package, Blackwell. It's notably better than the previous version, Hopper, which came out in 2022.Veteran tech analyst Ross Sandler recently shared a chart showing that the cost of renting older Hopper-based GPUs has plummeted as the newer Blackwell GPUs become more available. A chart showing the cost of renting Nvidia H100 GPUs Ross Sandler/Barclays Capital The majority of CoreWeave's deployed GPUs are based on the older Hopper architecture, according to its latest IPO filing from March 20.Sometimes, in situations like this, companies have to adjust their financials to reflect the quickly changing product landscape. This is done by reducing the estimated useful life of the assets in question. Then, through depreciation, the value of assets is reduced over a short time period to reflect things like wear and tear and, ultimately, obsolescence. The faster the depreciation, the bigger the hit to earnings.Amazon's AI-powered depreciationAmazon, the world's largest cloud provider, just did this. On a recent conference call with analysts, the company "observed an increased pace of technology development, particularly in the area of artificial intelligence and machine learning."That caused Amazon Web Services to decrease the useful life of some of its servers and networking gear from six years to five years, beginning in January.Sandler, the Barclays analyst, thinks other tech companies may have to do the same, which could cut operating income by billions of dollars. Will CoreWeave have to do the same, just as it's trying to pull off one of the biggest tech IPOs in years?I asked a CoreWeave spokeswoman about this, but she declined to comment. This is not unusual, because companies in the midst of IPOs have to follow strict rules that limit what they can say publicly.CoreWeave's IPO risk factorCoreWeave talks about this issue in its latest IPO filing, writing that the company is always upgrading its platform, which includes replacing old equipment."This requires us to make certain estimates with respect to the useful life of the components of our infrastructure and to maximize the value of the components of our infrastructure, including our GPUs, to the fullest extent possible."The company warned those estimates could be inaccurate. CoreWeave said its calculations involve a host of assumptions that could change and infrastructure upgrades that might not go according to plan all of which could affect the company, now and later. This caution is normal because companies have to detail everything that could hit their bottom line, from pandemics to cybersecurity attacks. As recently as January 2023, CoreWeave was taking the opposite approach to this situation, according to its IPO filing. The company increased the estimated useful life of its computing gear from five years to six years. That change reduced expenses by $20 million and boosted earnings by 10 cents a share for the 2023 year.If the company now follows AWS and reduces the useful life of its gear, that might dent earnings. Again, CoreWeave's spokeswoman declined to comment, citing IPO rules. An important caveat: Just because one giant cloud provider made an adjustment like this, it doesn't mean others will have to do the same. CoreWeave might design its AI data centers differently, somehow making Nvidia GPU systems last longer or become less obsolete less quickly, for instance. It'salso worth noting that other big cloud companies, including Google, Meta, and Microsoft, have increased the estimated useful life of their data center equipment in recent years.Google and Microsoft's current estimates are six years, like CoreWeave's, while Meta's is 5.5 years. However, Sandler, the Barclays analyst, thinks some of these big companies will follow AWS and shorten these estimates.

  • Ben Affleck Realizes Now His Batman Was, Like, Way Too Dark
    gizmodo.com
For some actors, landing a marquee superhero role is a career-capping honor. For othersincluding most of Hollywoods Batmen over the years, including Michael Keaton, Christian Bale, and Robert Pattinsonits an interesting and entertaining, but not defining, part of their filmography. For a few, or maybe just one performer in particular, its something to be looked back upon with despair and loathing. That performer being, of course, Ben Affleck. Afflecks unhappiness during his Batfleck period was well-documented and became prolific meme fodder. He first took on the mantle for 2016s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and also played the character in both versions of Justice League. His last time as Batman came with a cameo in 2023s The Flash. And with DCs leadership now in new hands, and at least one new Batman now established in Robert Pattinson, it seems Affleck is free forever from any future returns. In a new interview with GQ, it sounds like hes found creative fulfillment in both producing and directing more than acting lately, though he does have The Accountant 2 opening soon. One reason seems to be his less-than-happy state of mind while he was on the Justice League set. There are a number of reasons why that was a really excruciating experience. And they dont all have to do with the simple dynamic of, say, being in a superhero movie or whatever, he told the magazine. I am not interested in going down that particular genre again, not because of that bad experience, but just: Ive lost interest in what was of interest about it to me. But I certainly wouldnt want to replicate an experience like that. A lot of it was misalignment of agendas, understandings, expectations. And also by the way, I wasnt bringing anything particularly wonderful to that equation at the time, either. I had my own failings, significant failings, in that process and at that time. Also, he realized along the way that things had perhaps gotten overly dark for Batman and the rest of the DC Extended Universe. It started to skew too old for a big part of the audience. Like even my own son at the time was too scared to watch the movie. And so when I saw that I was like, Oh shit, we have a problem,' he recalled. Then I think thats when you had a filmmaker that wanted to continue down that road and a studio that wanted to recapture all the younger audience at cross purposes. Then you have two entities, two people really wanting to do something different and that is a really bad recipe. It wasnt time completely wasted, however. I had a really good time. I loved doing the Batman movie. I lovedBatman v Superman. And I liked my brief stints onThe Flashthat I did and when I got to work with Viola Davis onSuicide Squad for a day or two, Affleck said. In terms of creatively, I really think that I like the idea and the ambition that I had for it, which was of the sort of older, broken, damaged Bruce Wayne. And it was something we really went for in the first movie. Want more io9 news? High-Performance Sealing in Extreme Conditions at FiftyNine, Strandkai HamburgSponsored ContentSave this picture!@Frener&ReiferIn the Port of Hamburg, the "FiftyNine" rises as a 16-story residential tower that combines elegance and technical sophistication to withstand the demanding weather conditions of the harbor. Here, 60 floor-to-ceiling air-lux sliding windows have been installed with impressive dimensions of up to 5400 x 3085 mm. Thanks to the innovative, air-assisted sealing system, they withstand heavy driving rain, intense wind loads, and high noise pollution.Innovative Residential Design in the Heart of HafenCity HafenCity is one of the most sought-after residential areas in Germany. Spanning approximately 157 hectares, it is one of the largest urban development projects in Europe. The exposed waterfront location, directly on Strandkai and near the Elbphilharmonie, presents architects with unique challenges: limited space, strong weather exposure, and high sound insulation requirements. At the same time, the affluent clientele demands the highest levels of comfort and exclusivity.Designed by Hadi Teherani, the residential tower FiftyNine rises 59 meters above the harbor. Its 76 condominiums, ranging from studios to multi-story penthouses, are distributed over 16 floors and a penthouse level. The stacked floors, with rhythmically offset corners and wood-clad balconies, resemble ship decks. Spacious loggias offer stunning views of the harbor and the city. For the building envelope, Hadi Teherani Architects collaborated with Frener & Reifer. The 2970 m post-and-beam glass facade, along with the additional opaque thermal facade, must withstand extreme weather conditions, especially on the upper floors. At the same time, they meet the highest architectural and functional standards: barrier-free access, 100% sealing, and effective noise protection.Save this picture!Maximum Sealing Despite Extreme Wind LoadsSliding windows in high-rise buildings are exposed to enormous stresses. As building height increases, so do wind loads and the requirements for driving rain resistance. Conventional sealing systems, such as brush seals or rubber lips, wear out quickly under these conditions due to constant pressure and suction forces. The air-lux sliding windows were specifically developed for such challenges. Their patented pneumatic sealing system flexibly adapts to the movements of the facade and remains 100% sealed throughout its entire lifecycle. Blower-door tests conducted on-site confirmed the exceptional sealing performance. Even flush thresholds pose no obstacle. Wind loads can cause sliding and fixed elements to bend by up to 20 mm. While conventional systems often fail under such conditions, the air-lux solution remains consistently reliable. With over 7000 systems installed worldwide, it has proven to be durable.Save this picture!Sound Insulation and Wind Load ResistanceEffective noise protection is essential in urban environments. Even the smallest leaks significantly impair sound insulation. Thanks to its patented continuous air seal, air-lux sliding windows achieve top ratings in wind load certification: Class C4/B4 at a maximum of 2400 Pa (EN 12210). No other sliding window delivers comparable performance. While conventional systems can be compromised by building settlements as small as 2-5 mm, the air-lux system maintains its sealing performance even under greater tolerances. This significantly reduces the risk of functional issues, difficult-to-move elements, or even glass breakage.Save this picture! With FiftyNine at Strandkai, an architectural landmark has been created that seamlessly combines luxurious living with technical excellence. The air-lux sliding windows play a crucial role in enhancing the quality of life by providing lasting protection against wind, water, and noise. • Elephants avoid wasting energy during their epic journeys
    www.popsci.com
Elephants crossing Ewaso Ng'iro in Samburu, Kenya. CREDIT: Fritz VollrathFor African elephants, currently the largest land animals walking the Earth, finding food efficiently is critical to survival. These endangered pachyderms must eat upwards of 330 pounds of low-calorie vegetation per day to sustain themselves. Yet how they find the best ways to get their greens remains elusive. Data from more than 150 elephants found that they plan their journeys based on both resources availability and energy costs. The findings are detailed in a study published March 26 in the Journal of Animal Ecology and show how every step matters for these gentle giants. These new results have important implications for assessing and planning conservation and restoration measures, such as dispersal corridors, by explicitly accounting for the energy costs of moving, Emilio Berti, a study co-author and ecologist from the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv) and Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena said in a statement. Get the Popular Science newsletter Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. By signing up you agree to our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.Every step you takeThe International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the African forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) as Critically Endangered and the African savanna elephant (Loxodonta africana) as Endangered. Increased human activity has further fragmented their habitats, so understanding how they move throughout their landscape is crucial for designing better conservation strategies. They can travel between 31 and 121 miles in a single day, yet the key drivers behind elephant movements across this often harsh terrain have been less clear. In this new study, scientists from the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom, iDiv, and Friedrich Schiller University Jena in Germany used GPS tracking data from 157 African elephants in northern Kenya. The data was collected by conservation organization Save the Elephants from 1998 to 2020.The data indicated that the elephants strongly prefer landscape with lower movement costs. About 94 percent of the elephants in the study avoided rough terrain and steep slopes. According to the team, this suggests that the animals are aware of their surroundings and are making cost-benefit decisions regarding the most energy-efficient paths to take.An African Elephant with a GPS tracker. CREDIT: Jane Wynyard (Save The Elephants) The elephants also actively select areas that have higher vegetation productivity. Ninety-three percent indicated a preference for going towards more resource-rich environments.Similarly, water sources play a key role in where they choose to go. However, individual elephants can respond to water differently. Some will stay nearby, while others roam further away. This indicates that their movement choices are much more complex than simply traveling over to the nearest body of water. As far as speed, elephants moving at a slow speed show an even stronger avoidance of the difficult, more energetically-costly terrain. About 74 percent of the individual elephants avoided these rough or steep areas when moving slowly. This number jumped to 87 percent when they moved at intermediate speeds and 93 percent when moving fast. The elephants appear to be carefully balancing both effort and energy efficiency on long journeys.According to the team, this behavior is comparable to birds that appear to deliberately use favorable thermal uplifts to reduce the energetic costs of flying.Enter ENERSCAPEIn order to analyze the tracking data, the team used a modelling method called ENERSCAPE. The program estimates the energy costs of movement based on the animals body mass and the slope of the terrain. By integrating these estimates with satellite data on the vegetation productivity and water availability in the area, the team built detailed energy landscapes that can help better explain elephants decisions regarding where to move.A statistical approach called step-selection functions was also used to assess how these particular elephants selected which paths to take. This technique compares the locations that the elephants actually visited with other nearby areas they could have selected, but ultimately, did not. By doing so, the team pinpointed which environmental factors likely play a role in elephants movement decisions and habitat selection.Save energy whenever possibleThese new findings could help conservationists design protected areas and migration corridors to reduce conflict with humans. Additionally, the team suggests that conservation strategies should account for these individual differences in habitat preferences, particularly regarding water access.Understanding these results could also help predict how elephant movements may respond to climate change. Increased temperatures and changes to rain patterns affects both the energy costs of moving, and the availability of food and water. In future studies, the team aims to refine energy landscape models by adding seasonal changes, human disturbances, and the impact of climate change on elephant movements into their models. While more detailed research is needed to fully understand how an elephant uses its habitat, this study identifies a central decision-making factor for travelling elephants, study co-author and University of Oxford evolutionary biologist Fritz Vollrath said in a statement. Save energy whenever possible.

Several Major Publishers To Delay Game Releases To Avoid GTA 6, Says A ReportWe don't need a fortune teller to tell one thing that's for sure going to happen in the future: GTA 6 is going to be a massive hit to create an earthquake in the industry when it arrives in the fall of this year. And EA is not alone in considering delaying their upcoming title, the next Battlefield, due to the unknown release date of Rockstar's highly-anticipated title.A recent report from The Game Business has brought up this topic, with several major video game publishers reportedly considering delaying their own game launches to avoid, you know, showing up around the same timeframe as GTA 6 does. This timeframe has been called "the blast zone," a boss from a studio who is the developer behind one of the top 10 live-service games told TGB. It refers to the three to four weeks before and after its release like a "huge meteor" which publishers want to avoid. The boss of one of the world's biggest game publishers said, "Rockstar games always suck a lot of money and, more importantly, time out of the market. We don't want to be anywhere near that. We are working up multiple different plans for our titles." Among the fierce competition in the industry for more attention from players, GTA 6 just makes what is already difficult even worse. A senior exec added, "Even without GTA, it's immensely difficult to find free time for new games to shine. Time is the real scarcity for us, not money. Its tough out there."While fall covers a few months, it certainly includes October and November. According to a European boss of a AAA publisher, it would be unwise to release games at the end of October or the beginning of November. "If it arrives in late October, that means you either have to launch early which a lot of people seem to be doing with the recent glut of summer release dates. Or go later, putting you up against the Black Friday sales."Reading here, you might have a question in mind are the developers and publishers overreacting? Is it really going to be that bad, or are they just being too nervous? Well, let the data talk. As shared by TGB, when GTA 5 launched in September 2013, it set a record as the biggest entertainment launch ever. In the US, it sucked 50% of all game revenue that month, even though it was released in the middle. In the UK, it took up 89% of all games sold and 94% of revenue in its debut week. Just as another developer said: "There"s no point swimming against the current. We just need to prepare to win players back once the excitement has started to die down." This makes all these concerns and considerations reasonable.Of course, with all these worries on the table, the publishers aren't going to simply let it be. As said, they've come up with various plans to cater to different situations. Yet, although Rockstar says GTA 6's release is on track, things are not 100% sure yet. The same European boss couldn't help but let out their anxiety: "If we move out to 2025, what if Rockstar do, too? Will we have time to push our game up? Or will we have to delay further? It's stressful."Do you think it's understandable for publishers to set schedules according to the big title's release time? Share your thoughts with us.
