• CoreWeave's Stock Now Spiking After Disastrous IPO
    futurism.com
AI hyperscaler CoreWeave's initial public offering was meant to serve as a litmus test for the industry. The firm went public on the stock market lastIt's hard to read the tea leaves over such a short period, but at first, it looked like the company and industry,if CoreWeave is a bellwether was in for rough times ahead. After opening at $39, slightly below its IPO price of $40, shares slid almost ten percent in just its second day of trading on Monday. But on its third day today, the stock seemingly shook off the gloom and spiked over 20 percent before settling around 18 percent by midday. It's a significant change of course, bucking the narrative that the first tech IPO since 2021 was a catastrophe.Still, reality bites. The AI cloud provider was hoping to go public at $47 per share, but downsized the offeringover the days leading up to the IPO, raising concerns over a "disastrous" AI bubble. As of midday Tuesday, CoreWeave's shares are hovering around the $44 mark.CoreWeave's offering was the biggest tech IPO in four years, with inflation and rising interest rates disincentivizing investors from betting on riskier offerings until now, as CNBC reported earlier this week.As such, it's attracting outsize attention as the industry faces major losses. AI companies are still pouring hundreds of billions of dollars into the buildout of data center infrastructure to support increasingly power-hungry AI models. A possible return on investment years down the line seems as tenuous as ever, with tech CEOs warning of slumping demand while the supply side surges ahead.Trump's escalating tariff war has also put a major damper on investor enthusiasm due to surging economic uncertainty. However, CoreWeave's rally today shows a much-needed glimmer of hope for the AI industry.CoreWeave is tied up with a number of major players in the AI space, including Microsoft, OpenAI, and Nvidia. But whether it will be able to keep the current momentum going and survive for long on the public stock market remains to be seen.Especially following Chinese AI startup DeepSeek's emergence earlier this year, investors are growing wary of the enormous capital expenses. The firm's highly efficient model, which was trained at a fraction of the cost of its competitors at OpenAI and Google, punched a $1 trillion hole in the tech sector last month, with spooked investors wondering whether they had grossly overpaid for conventional models.Could CoreWeave's latest rally be indicative of renewed optimism or is it symptomatic of a highly volatile stock that could still fall victim to Trump's highly unpredictable and self-defeating economic policymaking and growing market uncertainty?Chances are the firm's share price could still be in for a rollercoaster ride in the days ahead as investors try to make sense of what an entirely AI-centered industry being publicly traded on the stock market actually looks like.More on CoreWeave: AI's "Biggest Test" Is Turning Into a Catastrophe as CoreWeave FloundersShare This Article

  • Elon Musk Gets Booed Right to His Face
    futurism.com
Amid his latest alleged election meddling initiative, unelected government wrecker Elon Musk was visibly and audibly heckled by a group of detractors.During a pre-election day rally in Green Bay which was nominally held in support of GOP Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate Brad Schimel, though most of the billionaire's rhetoric was focused on himself Musk tried to rattle off some lines about the "tremendous amount of waste and fraud" at the Federal Reserve.People in the crowd, however, were not having it. Some began booing loud enough for them to be caught on the South African-born businessman's mic, causing him first to trip on his words and then, cringingly, claim fellow billionaire George Soros was paying the haters."It was inevitable at least a few Soros operatives would be in the audience," the 53-year-old shitposter proclaimed, referencing the popular and arguably antisemitic conspiracy theories suggesting that the nonagenerian philanthropist is somehow controlling the world. "Give my regards to George. Say 'hi' to George for me."Not long after, people began pointing out that what Musk was suggesting that Soros and his ilk were paying people to protest is what the Tesla and SpaceX owner wasactually doing in Wisconsin by paying $1 million to a lucky petition signer during the state's court elections."Every accusation," tweeted political personality Mehdi Hassan, "is a confession.""Is Elon Musk attacking George Soros," another X user posted, "while he's literally buying an election in Wisconsin... the exact thing that Republicans baselessly claim that George Soros does?"The hypocrisy is, obviously, off the charts. Nevertheless, it's telling that Musk responded to his protesters the same kind that are taking their ire out on Teslas and tanking the EV company's stock by accusing them of being paid operatives. The entire gambit might be funny if the obsessive natalist weren't trying to imprison his detractors, but unfortunately that makes the whole thing deadly serious."It is time to arrest those funding the attacks," Musk posted hours before the Wisconsin rally. "Arresting their puppets and paid foot-soldiers wont stop the violence."Theschadenfreude of seeing the world's most annoying man get flustered over hecklers is priceless but there's no telling how long it will last, especially if Musk gets his way with those he (and the Justice Department) considers "terrorists."More on Musk: Mother of Elon's Child So Disgusted With Him That She Sells Her TeslaShare This Article

  • Over 1,500 PostgreSQL Servers Compromised in Fileless Cryptocurrency Mining Campaign
    thehackernews.com
Apr 01, 2025Ravie LakshmananCryptojacking / Cloud SecurityExposed PostgreSQL instances are the target of an ongoing campaign designed to gain unauthorized access and deploy cryptocurrency miners.Cloud security firm Wiz said the activity is a variant of an intrusion set that was first flagged by Aqua Security in August 2024 that involved the use of a malware strain dubbed PG_MEM. The campaign has been attributed to a threat actor Wiz tracks as JINX-0126."The threat actor has since evolved, implementing defense evasion techniques such as deploying binaries with a unique hash per target and executing the miner payload filelessly likely to evade detection by [cloud workload protection platform] solutions that rely solely on file hash reputation," researchers Avigayil Mechtinger, Yaara Shriki, and Gili Tikochinski said.Wiz has also revealed that the campaign has likely claimed over 1,500 victims to date, indicating that publicly-exposed PostgreSQL instances with weak or predictable credentials are prevalent enough to become an attack target for opportunistic threat actors. The most distinctive aspect of the campaign is the abuse of the COPY ... FROM PROGRAM SQL command to execute arbitrary shell commands on the host. The access afforded by the successful exploitation of weakly configured PostgreSQL services is used to conduct preliminary reconnaissance and drop a Base64-encoded payload, which, in reality, is a shell script that kills competing cryptocurrency miners and drops a binary named PG_CORE.Also downloaded to the server is an obfuscated Golang binary codenamed postmaster that mimics the legitimate PostgreSQL multi-user database server. It's designed to set up persistence on the host using a cron job, create a new role with elevated privileges, and write another binary called cpu_hu to disk.cpu_hu, for its part, downloads the latest version of the XMRig miner from GitHub and launches it filelessly via a known Linux fileless technique referred to as memfd. "The threat actor is assigning a unique mining worker to each victim," Wiz said, adding it identified three different wallets linked to the threat actor. "Each wallet had approximately 550 workers. Combined, this suggests that the campaign could have leveraged over 1,500 compromised machines."Found this article interesting? • I Ate McDonalds Minecraft Hot Sauce
    screencrush.com
Generally onenever wants to describe anything they put into their mouth as a hellish experience. But in this case, thats actually what McDonalds is going for.Thats because their latest movie tie-in food is Nether Flame Sauce, inspired by the Nether dimension of Minecraft and, by extension,A Minecraft Movie starring Jack Black. And what, you might ask, is Nether Flame Sauce? Well, according to the description onMcDonalds websiteit is a limited-edition hot sauce inspired by the Nether with crushed red pepper and flaming cayenne, balanced with hints of garlic and sweetness.Photo By AuthorPhoto By Authorloading...The label, complete with blocky Minecraft lettering, is red. The plastic cup is red instead of the standard white. And, yes, the sauce itself is quite red.Photo By AuthorPhoto By Authorloading...READ MORE: A Popular McDonalds Item Is Returning toTheir MenuMcDonalds also has Minecraft Happy Meals and adult collectibles but if youre familiar with this website, you know that I concern myself solely with the ingestion of cinematic-related victuals. If a movie has a tie-in food, I must eat it in the name of journalism (and masochism). So this morning I headed over to my local McDonalds, ordered a 20-piece Chicken McNuggets, and returned with my voxel-related prize: A serving of Nether Flame Sauce. You can watch mytastetestbelow:While I generally prefer the decidedly not-spicy (and, frankly, notat all sour) McDonaldsSweet N Sour sauce on my nuggets, I am partial to spicy things in general. And I will say: Iwas surprised by how much I enjoyed the flavor of this hot sauce. Itis spicy, withoutbeing too overwhelming. Even now, several minutes after I finished my Nether Flame Sauce, my mouth is still pleasantly tingly with the lingering heat.I cant say I detected much of the promised hints of garlic and sweetness, but I can also say I didnt necessarily miss them. In fact, ifNether Fire Sauce wasnt just a limited-time menu item themedto a Jason Momoa movie, I would absolutely get it again, and maybe even alternate it with Sweet N Sour in my nugget sauce rotation. For a condiment inspired by an infernal dimension, that feels like a solid win to me.Get our free mobile appA Brief History of Movie Tie-In FoodHow movies fell in love with chain restaurants (and vice versa)...Categories: Longform, Movie News

  • Trump Administration Cancels NIH Scientific Integrity Policy
    www.scientificamerican.com
April 1, 20253 min readTrump Administration Cancels NIH Scientific Integrity PolicyThe National Institutes of Health said it pulled the policy because of language on diversity and inclusion, in line with directives from the Trump administrationBy Ariel Wittenberg & E&E News Mark Wilson/NewsmakersCLIMATEWIRE | The National Institutes of Health has rescinded a scientific integrity policy intended to protect research and communications from political interference, citing the policy's commitment to diversity and inclusion. The policy was rescinded Friday evening to ensure alignment with the administrations priorities, according to a notice posted by NIH. The notice says NIH, which is the largest source of funding for medical research in the world, will now follow the Department of Health and Human Services' broader scientific integrity policy.NIH, the notice says, remains committed to upholding the principles of scientific integrity. On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today. The NIH policy, which was last updated during the final months of the Biden administration, included a commitment that diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility (DEIA) are integral components of the entire scientific process."Attention to DEIA can improve the success of the scientific workforce, foster innovation in the conduct and use of science, and provide for more equitable participation in science by diverse communities," the policy said.No such diversity language is included in the HHS policy NIH is now meant to follow.HHS spokesperson Andrew Nixon said the policy was pulled due to the diversity language. The NIH policy, he said, had been weaponized by the Biden administration to inject harmful DEI and gender ideology into research.Rescinding the policy, he said, will allow NIH to restore science to its golden standard and protect the integrity of science through the HHS policy. The move has alarmed scientists and public health experts who argue that the Trump administration has already politicized science by eliminating HHS offices focused on health equity and climate change, canceling research grants on racial health disparities and other topics the administration does not like, and removing health data from the HHS website. When someone rolls back a policy, the natural question is if they are doing that because they know they would be violating it were it to remain in place, said Liz Borkowski, director of health policy management at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University. The agency's rescission of its scientific integrity policy came during NIH Director Jay Bhattacharyas second week on the job.Bhattacharya himself has conducted federally funded research into racial health disparities, including authoring a 2012 paper that found black patients had higher mortality rates following heart transplants than white patients. During his confirmation hearing, Bhattacharya told senators that he would not allow NIH to be influenced by President Donald Trumps executive orders to restrict funding and communications for initiatives that promote diversity, inclusion and equity. The health needs of minorities in this country are a vital priority for me, he told Sen. Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.). I dont see anything in the presidential orders that contradict that.Environmental and climate health researchers who receive funding from NIH are already fearful that the Trump administration could target their grants. Many NIH grants for climate-related research examine how the health effects of climate change, like heat-related illnesses, can have outsize impacts on communities of color and marginalized communities.Rescinding the NIH scientific integrity policy puts all science at risk, said Jennifer Jones, director for science and democracy at the Union of Concerned Scientists. In the last week alone, she said, HHS cut 10,000 staff members and forced out the Food and Drug Administrations top vaccine official. In his resignation letter, Dr. Peter Marks accused HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. of pushing misinformation about vaccine safety as measles continues to spread across the country. It has become clear that truth and transparency are not desired by the secretary, but rather he wishes subservient confirmation of his misinformation and lies, Marks wrote.Marks departure underscores the need for scientific integrity policies throughout each of HHSs agencies, Jones said, arguing that workers at NIH should be able to report accusations of political interference to integrity officials within their own agency. We need policies in place to protect the scientists who remain at the agency and who remain funded, and to protect us from this conspiracy-minded administration, she said.Reprinted from E&E News with permission from POLITICO, LLC. "You have to go through but you know there's something awful for you in the darkness."Continuing on, the director - whose previous work includes 2022's Barbarian, which our Matt describes as "wonderfully unpredictable" - added this is "a thrill that the Resident Evil games" have managed to perfect."My movie will be built in the spirit of those games and follows one central protagonist from point A to point B, as they descend deeper into hell," Cregger closed. As to who that central protagonist could be, The Hollywood Reporter states Euphoria's Austin Abrams (pictured below) is being eyed up for a role in the upcoming film, although nothing has been finalised.
