Devil May Cry season 1 reviewPeak Dante.Image credit: Netflix Review by Graeme Virtue Contributor Published on April 3, 2025 Netflix's long-gestating animated adaptation of Capcom's venerable hack-em-up gives Dante his blockbuster action hero moment.Next year Devil May Cry will catch up with its lead character's hair by celebrating its silver anniversary. The hellacious Capcom action series launched in 2001 and has nimbly zigged, zagged and pirouetted over the course of six core installments. Viewed as a gunslinging, sword-swinging continuum, the through line of the franchise seems to be this: if a demon is worth slaying, it's worth doing it with needlessly flashy style.Devil May Cry TV series 1 reviewAnimation: Studio MirProduced by: Capcom, NetflixAvailability: Out 3rd April on NetflixThat signature spirit of cocksure ultraviolence to goose a score-chasing Style Gauge is preserved in Netflix's fizzy new series, which arrives this week after first being announced back in 2018. It has been overseen by Adi Shankar, a specialist in the streamer's games-to-animation pipeline having worked on the admired Castlevania and daft Far Cry 3 sci-fi spin-off Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix. With Limp Bizkit's meathead anthem Rollin' soundtracking the credits sequence and knowing needle drops from the likes of Linkin Park, Rage Against the Machine and Crazy Town, the personality of this adaptation - set in a modern-ish NYC where the world is being sporadically invaded by diabolical hellspawn - is very turn-of-the-millennium nu-metal. But thankfully it is not one of those protracted origin stories where the super-powered protagonist only pulls on their iconic costume in the final scenes. Here's a Devil May Cry season 1 trailer.Watch on YouTubeAt first glance, this incarnation of swaggering demon hunter Dante (voiced with impish glee by Johnny Yong Bosch) seems fully formed: the dual handguns, longsword, K-pop idol haircut and swirling red leather trenchcoat from the franchise's imperial phase are all present and correct. Perhaps surprisingly, there is also a whiff of Ninja Theory's 2013 reboot DmC: Devil May Cry in Dante's callow slacker-dom and apparent allergy to introspection. As a child he may have witnessed his mother and twin brother get horrifically murdered by demons but Dante wears his angst pretty lightly. He also takes his enhanced fighting skills and uncanny abilities - notably Wolverine-style accelerated healing - in his sashaying stride. As he quips, twirls and sick burns his way through supernatural skirmishes, you get the sense that he has been dispatching minor minions for so long he just started adding in all the combat curlicues to keep himself amused. ("Dammit, he's cool," admits a hulking elemental golem as the effortlessly acrobatic Dante prepares to smash their face in with a motorcycle.) Image credit: NetflixDante's life of carefree demon-busting is upended by the machinations of theatrical baddie White Rabbit (Hoon Lee), a monocle-sporting, monologue-spouting mastermind who has made it their floppy-eared mission to destroy the mystical barrier separating Earth and a sulphuric realm we think of as Hell. For that, he needs one of Dante's heirlooms. With rising public panic over incursions by "terrorist demons", the US government - steered by a highly suspect vice-president (voiced by the late Kevin Conroy) - mobilises DARKCOM, a semi-privatised anti-demon army. The tip of the DARKCOM spear tasked with neutralising Dante is a characterful squad of elite operators led by Mary (Scout Taylor-Compton), a driven tactician with distinctive green and red irises and a pair of nifty rocket boots. There is a sparky push-and-pull between Mary and Dante, her rigid by-the-book chalk contrasted with her target's one-liner cheesiness. She assumes his matador moves and emotional shallowness must be a himbo facade to hide his true soulful self. In one of the show's best jokes, she's dead wrong (at least at first; Dante, Mary and White Rabbit all get some unexpected dimensionality as the tale unfolds). Image credit: NetflixOver the course of its eight episodes Devil May Cry constantly channels the sort of OTT action movies you suspect Dante watches in his messy crash pad between freelance gigs: a highway chase with demons stomping on traffic feels very Matrix Reloaded, while Mary gets a side mission in a run-down apartment block that echoes The Raid or Dredd. Heads are brutally lopped, guts are generously spilled and despite the freewheeling vibe the collateral damage slowly but surely rises. The animation by Korean veterans Studio Mir (who had a hand in the recent X-Men '97 cartoon) has a pleasingly elastic snap and constantly ground-shattering heft. They have also mastered the art of foreshortened perspective so various characters can strike a badass pose while the barrel of their chosen weapon looms intimidatingly large in the frame. If there was an on-screen Style Gauge, the artists would be racking up the points. So far, so moreish action-fest. But just when you've synchronised with its headlong pace and constant moshpit swirl of action, Devil May Cry abruptly demonstrates it has another gear: a poised, essentially dialogue-free flashback episode that gives Studio Mir space to flex in completely different artistic directions. That impressive detour en route to an energised but fairly boilerplate apocalyptic finale is what suggests there could be more mileage in this spirited take on the mythos. An advanced screener of Season 1 of Devil May Cry was made available for this review by Netflix.

  • Baldurs Gate 3 on Nintendo Switch 2 is more than possible, claims ex-Nintendo marketing lead

Rest assured, all imagery and advice is unique and original. Check out how we test and review games hereNear-full details of the Nintendo Switch 2 have been officially revealed following a brand-new direct. While Nintendo has yet to reveal the exact technical specs of the consoles RAM and SoC setup, a host of new games, specs, prices and more have been revealed for the new machine. The company has also revealed why a host of Switch 1 games wont run on Switch 2.With games like Cyberpunk 2077 coming to the console on launch day, Nintendo Switch 2 is a massive technical leap over the 2017 handheld (which was already running 2013-era hardware). In a recent podcast, just before the Direct, former Nintendo marketing leads Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang explained that the new handheld should be capable of running games such as Baldurs Gate 3.Baldurs Gate 3 is possible on Nintendo Switch 2While Larian Studios has not revealed any official plans to bring its amazing RPG to Nintendos new handheld, Ellis and Yang claim the new console should be more than powerful enough to play the amazing game. The two ex-marketing leads explain that the console is more than capable of playing anything that can on a Steam Deck, using BG3 as an example.A lot of these big studios got a lot of experience and positive feedback through putting their game on the Steam Deck and translating it to a piece of hardware thats maybe not as powerful as the high-end PC, Ellis explained. They saw, no wait, theres a lot of people that want to play a version thats maybe a little bit dialed down because they want that extra form factor.Im talking about Baldurs Gate 3. Im talking about Elden Ring. Im talking about Cyberpunk. The list goes on we dont yet know the complete under-the-hood power of the Switch 2, but its not crazy to say, well, if it can run on a Steam Deck it probably can run on a Switch 2, right?'Larian Studios also has a history of creating miracle ports of its intensive RPGs. For example, the intensive-for-its-time Divinity Original Sin 2 received an amazing port to iOS and the original Nintendo Switch. With key optimisations made to the studios in-house engine over the past year, a Switch 2 port of BG3 should be more than possible.Judging from the quality of gameplay footage weve seen in the recent Nintendo Switch 2 Direct, the new Nintendo handheld should also provide a substantially better experience in Baldurs Gate 3 than a device like the Steam Deck. As someone who has played both Hogwarts Legacy and Cyberpunk 2077 on Steam Deck, the footage weve seen on them running on Switch 2 is considerably higher quality than Valves trusty machine.Personally, I didnt have a great experience playing Baldurs Gate 3 on the Steam Deck, although its a fine way to play if its the only option you have. However, if a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game does release, I will be all over that in a heartbeat considering Im able to actually get my hands on one. While Larian is officially leaving Baldurs Gate 3 behind to create its next RPG, it wouldnt be out of the realm of possibility for the studio to give the game one last hurrah on the new Nintendo handheld. Please, Larian, please.Baldurs Gate 3Platform(s):macOS, PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S, Xbox Series S/X, Xbox Series XGenre(s):Adventure, RPG, Strategy10VideoGamerSubscribe to our newsletters!By subscribing, you agree to our Privacy Policy and may receive occasional deal communications; you can unsubscribe anytime.Share

  • In Hollow Knight: Silksong's case, the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct cake was somehow not a lie

GLaDOS For NewsIn Hollow Knight: Silksong's case, the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct cake was somehow not a lieIt's possibly the weirdest way this apparent cheeky foreshadowing could have played out, so of course it's happened to Silksong.Image credit: Team Cherry/BonAppetit/VG247 News by Mark Warren Senior Staff Writer Published on April 3, 2025 You ween't dreaming. Hollow Knight: Silksong really did show up at yesterday's Nintendo Switch 2 Direct! It was a very brief cameo, but by skong, people said, we'll take it.So, we now know it's coming to Switch 2 at some point in 2025, but as of recently the chances of actually getting any info about Team Cherry's highly-desired game on April 2 seemed like they were totally random. That is, unless you bought into a theory based around cake that surfaced back in January, and continued to believe even when the devs themselves looked to have poured water on the speculation fire.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Yep, in a very Silksong twist, the fan theory that sprung up around some Team Cherry dev comments on a recipe for Brooklyn Blackout Cake listed on the website of food outlet Bon Appetit has actually turned out to be on the money cameo date-wise.As a quick recap, folks had spotted comments seemingly from Team Cherry art director Ari Gibson and game designer William Pellen - programmer Jack Vine also appears to have gotten in on the act - on this random cake recipe that happened to have been posted on April 2, 2024. You can probably see what kind of speculation this led to, but if you can't, yesterday's Switch 2 Direct took place on April 2, 2025.After that naturally caused a hype overload among info-hungry skongers, Silksong marketing and publishing manager Matthew 'Leth' Griffin appeared to have ruled out these cheeky comments actually being a tease of a Switch 2 Direct cameo or release date announcement, with a tweet insisting "the cake is a lie". Image credit: VG247It wasn't though, as April 2 came and boom, there was Silksong in the Direct. Cue Reddit posts declaring "THE CAKE WAS REAL!!!!", as those who kept on believing take their victory lap. Also, a fresh comment posted 13 hours ago on the cake recipe from an account with the handle 'A_TRUE_SKONGER' reads: "The cake turned out very well! Thank you for the amazing recipe!" You love to see it. What does this mean in terms which wacky theories you should buy into when the skongers start itching for a release date more specfic than just the year 2025? We've got no skonging idea.Did you never doubt that the Hollow Knight: Silksong cake theory would actually be right about something deliciously skongy coming out of the oven on April 2? • Y Combinator neobank Djamo raises $17M with 1M users across Francophone Africa
    techcrunch.com
Djamo is one of several digital banking startups targeting Africas underbanked. But unlike many that focus on large markets like Nigeria, Egypt, or South Africa, Djamo has carved out a niche in Francophone West Africa, specifically the Ivory Coast and, more recently, Senegal. It now serves over one million customers across both countries. The Y Combinator-backed fintech just raised $17 million to expand its product suite for these retail customers and the thousands of small businesses it has onboarded in the last two years. The equity round, the largest ever for an Ivorian startup, surpasses Djamos $14 million Series A in 2022 and reflects continued investor confidence in its mission to make banking accessible and affordable.Co-founder and CEO Hassan Bourgi declined to share the new valuation but said it has doubled since the last raise.Bourgi founded Djamo with chief product and technical officer Rgis Bamba in 2020 to close the financial access gap in French-speaking African countries, where few adults have bank accounts. Traditional banks in the region often cater to the affluent, leaving most of the population reliant on mobile money, a cheaper method that includes using phone numbers to make financial transactions.Mobile money has been instrumental in expanding financial access across Africa. As of 2022, 28% of adults in Sub-Saharan Africa had a mobile money account, per the World Bank, and the region holds more than half of the worlds total. But that progress has also created a ceiling. Most mobile money platforms offer basic services: cash-in, cash-out, P2P transfers, and bill payments. While useful, they dont unlock more advanced financial tools like credit, investments, or long-term savings.Djamo is positioning itself between mobile money and traditional banking. The startup offers the accessibility of mobile money with the financial depth of a bank account, a similar playbook that Softbank-backed OPay and Transsion-owned PalmPay have used to scale to tens of millions of customers in Nigeria. Its target is a growing segment of users, mostly younger customers, whove outgrown mobile money wallets but still find traditional banks expensive, outdated, or inaccessible, the founders say. These users are evolving, said Bourgi. But they dont want to go where their parents went, into institutions with predatory pricing and arent adapted to the new generation of customers. And this is what we are building, trying to become the go-to bank for this huge cohort of customers that is evolving now to more complex, wealth-building financing opportunities.Consumer finance app Djamo eyes Francophone Africa expansion, backed by new $14M roundExpanding product suite to suit demandSince our last coverage, Djamo has expanded beyond cards and peer-to-peer transfers. The Ivorian fintech now offers savings vaults, investment products thanks to the regions first fintech-issued brokerage license and salary-linked bank accounts, which Bourgi sees as important to boosting customer engagement.Like many neobanks, Djamo attracts banked users who treat it as a secondary account for smoother bill payments and mobile money integration. But its the unbanked, more difficult to activate, who show greater long-term potential. These users, who make up over 55% of Djamos base, often treat the app as their primary financial service.Bourgi says nine in ten users who rely on Djamo as their main account come from this segment. To reach more of them, Djamo has adopted a hybrid approach, combining its app with offline agents who meet customers in person to facilitate transactions, similar to the mobile money model now more broadly adopted by fintechs across the continent.Currently, only 510% of Djamo users receive salaries through the app. The next phase for us, Bourgi said, is figuring out how to move from 10% to 50% of our users getting their salaries paid directly into Djamo.Meanwhile, Djamo is also ramping up services for small businessesabout 10,000 of them, many of whom started as retail users. According to CTO Bamba, the startup now provides bulk payments, payment links, and QR code tools to help merchants accept and manage payments directly within the app.The fintech generates revenue from merchant fees on online card purchases and a premium tier plan, which 25% of users pay for. Bamba adds that the company is exploring additional revenue streams, including lending and earning interest on customer deposits. It is in the process of securing licenses that will allow it to offer interest-bearing savings accounts and credit products.Djamos founders say the company has grown revenue 5x since 2022 and processed more than $4.5 billion in transactions since launch.Africas newest fintech unicorns are winning by keeping their feet on the groundWith its recent expansion into Senegal, Djamo has entered a market dominated by Wave, one of Africas largest fintechs known for low-cost mobile money transfers. But rather than compete directly, Djamo positions itself as a complementary service, offering a digital banking experience where users can store funds and access more advanced tools like savings, investments, and credit. Now a 250-person team, Djamo is betting that its new round of funding, led by pan-African, gender-focused VC Janngo Capital, will help it scale those services across French-speaking Africa. We are thrilled to lead the largest VC round in Ivory Coast and double down on Djamo, a mission-driven fintech transforming access to financial services across Francophone West Africa, said Fatoumata B, founder and executive chair of Janngo Capital. In a region where fewer than 25% of adults have access to formal financial services, and where women are twice as likely to be excluded, this is a vital mission. With women making up a third of its users, Djamo is not only closing the gender gap but unlocking economic opportunity at scale.Other investors participating in the round include SANAD Fund for MSMEs (managed by Finance in Motion), Partech, Oikocredit, Enza Capital, and Y Combinator.

  • Michael Cioni and the New Landscape for Post & VFX
    www.fxguide.com
At the recent Hollywood Professional Association (HPA) Tech Retreat, Michael Cioni delivered a bold and provocative talk about the existential challenges facing Hollywood in the age of the creator economy. Framing his insights through the lens of cinematography and camera innovation, he made the case that traditional Hollywood can no longer rely on legacy systems, prestige, or scale to maintain its dominance. Platforms like YouTube and TikTok, paired with cheap, accessible production tools, have leveled the playing field. Now, creators anywherewith little more than a smartphone and an ideaare commanding global audiences that rival major studios. But while that talk focused on the front end of productioncameras, workflows, and onset innovationtheres another half of the story thats just as critical to the industrys future: post-production and VFX.In this follow-up conversation, Cioni turns his attention to what happens after the camera stops rolling. With his deep roots in post, from founding the pioneering post house LightIron, to leading innovation at Panavision, Frame.io, and Adobe, he brings a unique perspective to how technology is reshaping the back end of filmmaking. From cloud workflows and real-time collaboration to AI-powered editing and metadata-driven pipelines, Cioni argues that Hollywoods survival depends not just on changes to capturebut on radically rethinking how we finish and deliver content. In this fxpodcast, Michael brings both clarity and urgency to the conversation, drawing on decades of experience at the intersection of creativity and technology. In this conversation he discuss why post-production may be the key frontier where Hollywood either adapts or fades. He also discusses one new key solution for distributed workflow : Strada. This new technology provides an alturnative to Cloud storage in a way that is both fast and provides real flexibility.Strada Agents will be on display at the 2025 NAB Show in Las Vegas where the Strada team will demonstrate this technology breakthrough at Booth SL4807 in the South Hall.

  • Pawtucket-Central Falls Station // 1916
    buildingsofnewengland.com
The Pawtucket-Central Falls Railroad Station is a crumbling relic of a time once dominated by rail travel. This architectural landmark spans the border of the cities of Pawtucket andCentral Falls, along with the tracks of the former New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad and is one of the more unique buildings in Rhode Island. The station opened in 1916 to replace separate stations in the two cities from plans by F.W. Mellor, architect for the New Haven Railroad withNorcross Brothersof Worcester facilitating the construction over a structural steel base spanning the tracks. As many as 140 trains per day once passed under this station, but in 1959, it closed. The building was purchased by a private owner and plans failed to materialize for decades, leaving us with a crumbling masterpiece in architecture and engineering. In 2007, the lot was partially developed with the addition of a suburban, soulless CVS store and parking lot, which today, directly abuts the station. In 2023, a new Pawtucket/Central Falls station opened nearby, which has brought new calls to demolish this building, with people actively seeking grants to fund the estimated $10 Million dollar demolition.
