Nintendo Was Likely Caught Off-Guard by Backlash to Switch 2 Game Pricing Former PR
While Nintendo revealed a host of details about the Switch 2 during its recent Direct, the company was quiet about how much the console and its games would cost. Instead, the price would be later discovered through updates made to the official Switch 2 website. Notable about the pricing was the fact that, with Mario Kart World costing $79.99, it will be the first AAA game at that price without being a premium edition.According to former PR employees for the company, Kit Ellis and Krysta Yang, the company might be quite surprised at the outcry it has gotten during its Treehouse streams. For context, during the streams where Nintendo showcased the gameplay for titles like Mario Kart World, the live chat was flooded with messages asking the company to lower the price of the console and its games.Yang and Ellis believe that Nintendo is probably surprised by the reaction. In a recent video, the duo spoke about the consoles announcement. However, the fact that Nintendo didnt reveal pricing during the Direct itself was described by Ellis as showing disrespect to the consumer. Yang said that its a little bit degrading, almost, to the intelligence of the consumer. The duo also spoke about members of Nintendos PR departments likely discussing the matter in a War Room that it usually has for livestreamed events like the recent Treehouse streams. One of the things that we were joking about is this thing called the war room that Nintendo usually has at these types of events and for these big sort of moments, said Yang. We were joking around and saying things like Oh gosh, this is the worst place possibly to be, but there actually is a purpose to the war room, is that their job is to look at what is happening out there, what are people saying, what are people thinking, what is the reaction? And come up with any solutions to any issues. Theyre basically not doing their jobs at all right now.Yang also believes that Nintendo was likely caught off guard by the reaction to its games pricing. She went on to talk about how Nintendo hasnt had to do any crisis communication for quite some time now owing to the success of the Switch, and as such, its current teams might not have the experience required to handle this kind of situation.I do think that they are a bit surprised by how severe this reaction is, said Yang. The problem is, now they are kind of like, bad at doing this now, because they havent had a need to do a lot of crisis communication for eight years. The Nintendo Switch 2 is currently priced at $449.99. There is also a bundle announced that includes a copy of Mario Kart World, priced at $499.99. This would make the bundle the cheapest way to actually get the game, since on its own, it is priced at $79.99 for a digital copy, and $89.99 for a physical copy.

Cool FindsMetal Detectorists Unearth Ancient Dagger Decorated With Tiny Stars, Crescent Moons and Geometric PatternsFound at a beach in northern Poland, the nearly ten-inch-long artifact could be up to 2,500 years old. It had been lodged inside a lump of clay Jacek Ukowski and Katarzyna Herdzik, the metal detectorists who discovered the dagger Museum of the History of Kamie LandAfter a recent storm, two metal detectorists went searching for treasure at a beach in northern Poland. They discovered a piece of history lodged in a lump of clay: a small ornamental dagger decorated with stars, crescent moons and geometric patterns. The metal detectorists, Jacek Ukowski and Katarzyna Herdzik, notified experts at the nearbyMuseum of the History of Kamie Land. According to astatement, the museums director, archaeologist Grzegorz Kurka, met the duo at the beach to examine the artifact. Created during the Hallstatt period, the dagger may be up to 2,500 years old. Museum of the History of Kamie LandThe dagger is a metallurgical masterpiece that could be up to 2,500 years old, per the statement. Its likely connected to the Hallstatt culture, which existed in western Europe between roughly the eighth and fifth centuries B.C.E. Experts think the weapons may have been crafted in southern Europe and imported to the Baltic coast.Ukowski and Herdzik are members of a group of metal detectorists called theSt. Cordula Association for the Saving of Monuments. The dagger isnt Ukowskis first big discovery. Last year, he found a brokenpapal bulla popes engraved lead sealthat may have been linked to Clement VI.But as he tells the Polish Press Agency (PAP), the nearly ten-inch-long dagger is his most precious discovery yet.The storm had loosened the piece of clay from a nearby cliff face. The cliff was eroded, and the block must have collapsed, he adds. I entered the place with a metal detector because it started ringing there. Experts say the intricate design suggests a high level of craftsmanship. Museum of the History of Kamie LandThe weapons thin handle is decorated with sculpted rings. It extends into a blade about the width of a thumb, which narrows to a sharp point. The top of the blade is stamped with tiny crescent moons and stars, while geometric patterns run the rest of its length. The decorative stars may symbolize constellations, indicating a ritual significance in connection with a solar cult, per the statement. Alternatively, it could have been used by a wealthy warrior.A true work of art, Kurka tells PAP. I have not seen such a dagger in my experience with findings in Polish territories.Kurka thinks that the intricate craftsmanship indicates a high level of metallurgical skill, as Bartosz Kolodziejczyk of the Polish news website Interia reports. The dagger is now in the hands of museum staffers. Experts will soon conduct a metallurgical analysis, which will shed light on the daggers metallic composition and the techniques used to create it. Researchers will also attempt to detect patterns of wear on the dagger, which could provide insights into how it was used.Per the statement, the dagger is a valuable piece of the history ofPomeraniathe historical European region that encompasses Kamie.Once researchers finish studying the artifact, it will go on display in a Polish museum, according to Popular Mechanics Tim Newcomb.Get the latest stories in your inbox every weekday.

Apple considers expanding iPhone assembly in Brazil to get around US tariffs
President Trump announced this week a series of tariffs imposed on the import of products from other countries, which will end up hitting many US companies like Apple since most of its products come from China. Now it seems that Apple is considering expanding the assembly of iPhones in Brazil to get around the US tariffs.Apple to assemble more iPhones in BrazilSources familiar with the matter told Brazilian magazine Exame that Apple has been considering expanding the capacity of its facilities in Brazil as a way of paying lower import duties on iPhones.Apple has been assembling products in Brazil since 2011. The company built a facility in So Paulo in partnership with Taiwanese company Foxconn. However, due to its small capacity, only a few products are assembled in Brazil, such as entry-level iPhones, to supply the local market. According to the report, Apple wants to assemble even more iPhone models in Brazil in the near future. The possibility of expanding manufacturing in Brazil began to be studied last year, with upgrades to machinery and industrial processes, says the report.Anatel, the Brazilian telecom regulator, recently granted Apple and Foxconn Brazil the necessary certification to assemble the iPhone 16 in Brazil. The iPhone 13, iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 were already assembled in the country. The report suggests that Apple also wants to assemble iPhone 16 Pro models for the first time in Brazil. If Apple succeeds, iPhones assembled in Brazil will not only meet local demand, but will also be exported to the US. For Apple, this will result in considerably lower taxes. The US government will tax products imported from China by 34%. India, which also assembles iPhones exported to the rest of the world, has been slapped with a 26% tariff. For Brazil, Trumps tariffs are only 10%. The president claims that the tariffs are reciprocal to what each country already charges on products imported from the US.Apples shares have already plunged by more than 10% since the new tariffs were announced. The company has lost $300 billion in market value so far. The same has happened to other US companies such as Nvidia. The announcement has already pushed Nintendo to hold off on launching the Switch 2 in the US, citing uncertainties over tariffs.Gadgets I recommend:Add 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. Gamers Panic as Tariffs Poised to Spike Prices for Gaudy RGB PC Components
President Donald Trump's baffling escalation of his trade war has bodychecked international markets, and is expected to leave countless industries and consumers with major bruises.Americans will bear the brunt of Trump's soaring tariffs. After all, they're basically a tax on goods from other countries, additional costs that are typically passed straight down to consumers. The electronics sector is already taking a beating, with gamers facing skyrocketing prices as supply lines fall into chaos. As Tom's Hardware reports, boutique PC builders heavily rely on parts imported almost exclusively from Asia, which means that buying that shiny gaming PC setup of your dreams could soon become an unaffordable luxury."Tariffs have a direct impact on our cost structure... which we have to pass down to our customers," PC builder Maingear CEO Wallace Santos told Tom's. "Some of our suppliers are stopping their production lines to move out of China, causing scarcity, which ultimately causes FOMO, which causes even more scarcity."Santos expects prices for Maingear PCs to rise by anywhere from 20 to 25 percent in the US in the wake of the illogical trade war.Countries where most PC components are manufactured have been hit hard, with China, Taiwan, South Korea, and Vietnam facing steep tariff rates of anywhere from 26 (South Korea) to 54 percent (China)."Some of our GPU suppliers had to stop their Chinese lines to move to Taiwan or Vietnam, causing additional shortages," Santos told Tom's Hardware.Gamers a contested electoral demographic are unsurprisingly fuming."Dude these tariffs are going to fuck gaming raw, I'm sorry," one user tweeted."If you think that retailers arent gonna jack up the prices of the units already in the US too, I got a bridge to sell ya," one Reddit user seethedinthe PlayStation 5 subreddit."I'm scared of how much the PS6 will cost," another user fretted.Other users expressed fears that the already expensive Nintendo Switch 2 console, which was announced earlier this week, could soon become even pricier. Some argued the Japanese gaming company had pushed the price up in anticipation of tariffs. As The Verge reports, even the board game industry is trembling, with Steve Jackson Games CEO Meredith Placko calling the tariffs a "seismic shift" for the industry, indicating that "prices are going up.""This one-two punch is likely to put many of our members out of business or force them to downsize and lay off employees to survive," the Game Manufacturers Association, which represents the tabletop and card gaming industry, said in a statement quoted by Polygon. The gaming industry as a whole is about to face major price hikes. Aubrey Quinn, senior vice president of Entertainment Software Association, the US trade group that reps all major gaming companies, told Game File that "Any one product that a consumer would buy is likely to be subject to many of the tariffs announced, all compounded on top of one another."And the situation is bound to get even worse as China has called Trump's bluff, announcing an (actually) reciprocal tariff of 34 percent on US imports on Friday. It's yet another major escalation that could worsen trade tensions and lead to even more price hikes to the detriment of gamers everywhere.More on tariffs: Trump Tariffs Show Signs of Being Written by AIShare This Article
