Each Cup consists of four races and there are seven cups that we know of, giving us an estimated total of 28 different tracks. That said, a world map (above) published on the Nintendo website reveals 29 circuit icons. Might one Cup consist of five races? Is one circuit reserved only for Knockout Mode? We'll have to wait and see.Are there any returning tracks in Mario Kart World? There are a couple of returning track names in Mario Kart World (Wario Stadium, Sky-High Sundae, etc.), though we have to imagine that they have been redesigned to account for the game's new features like 24 racers. What's the best Mario Kart World Track?Well, it's too early to comment on that! Editor Gavin had great fun on one that he says was "a bit like Toad's Turnpike with loads of traffic on a bridge."He also says he nearly won, though, so maybe check back later when we've had a chance to verify that this wasn't part of some Switch 2 fever dream brought on by excitement and dehydration. We will be updating this guide as we see more from Mario Kart World. DeepSeek: Everything you need to know about the AI chatbot app
DeepSeek has gone viral.Chinese AI lab DeepSeek broke into the mainstream consciousness this week afterits chatbot app rose to the top of the Apple App Store charts (and Google Play, as well). DeepSeeks AI models, which were trained using compute-efficient techniques, have led Wall Street analystsand technologists to question whether the U.S. can maintain its lead in the AI race and whether the demand for AI chips will sustain. But where did DeepSeek come from, and how did it rise to international fame so quickly?DeepSeeks trader originsDeepSeek is backed by High-Flyer Capital Management, a Chinese quantitative hedge fund that uses AI to inform its trading decisions.AI enthusiast Liang Wenfeng co-founded High-Flyer in 2015. Wenfeng, who reportedly began dabbling in trading while a student at Zhejiang University, launched High-Flyer Capital Management as a hedge fund in 2019 focused on developing and deploying AI algorithms. In 2023, High-Flyer started DeepSeek as a lab dedicated to researching AI tools separate from its financial business. With High-Flyer as one of its investors, the lab spun off into its own company, also called DeepSeek. From day one, DeepSeek built its own data center clusters for model training. But like other AI companies in China, DeepSeek has been affected by U.S. export bans on hardware. To train one of its more recent models, the company was forced to use Nvidia H800 chips, a less-powerful version of a chip, the H100, available to U.S. companies.DeepSeeks technical team is said to skew young. The company reportedly aggressively recruits doctorate AI researchers from top Chinese universities. DeepSeek also hires people without any computer science background to help its tech better understand a wide range of subjects, per The New York Times.DeepSeeks strong modelsDeepSeek unveiled its first set of models DeepSeek Coder, DeepSeek LLM, and DeepSeek Chat in November 2023. But it wasnt until last spring, when the startup released its next-gen DeepSeek-V2 family of models, that the AI industry started to take notice.DeepSeek-V2, a general-purpose text- and image-analyzing system, performed well in various AI benchmarks and was far cheaper to run than comparable models at the time. It forced DeepSeeks domestic competition, including ByteDance and Alibaba, to cut the usage prices for some of their models, and make others completely free.DeepSeek-V3, launched in December 2024, only added to DeepSeeks notoriety.According to DeepSeeks internal benchmark testing, DeepSeek V3 outperforms both downloadable, openly available models like MetasLlama and closed models that can only be accessed through an API, like OpenAIs GPT-4o. Equally impressive is DeepSeeks R1 reasoning model. Released in January, DeepSeek claims R1 performs as well as OpenAIso1model on key benchmarks.Being a reasoning model, R1 effectively fact-checks itself, whichhelps it to avoid some of thepitfallsthat normally trip up models. Reasoning models take a little longer usually seconds to minutes longer to arrive at solutions compared to a typical non-reasoning model. The upside is that they tend to be more reliable in domains such as physics, science, and math. There is a downside to R1, DeepSeek V3, and DeepSeeks other models, however. Being Chinese-developed AI, theyre subject tobenchmarkingby Chinas internet regulator to ensure that its responses embody core socialist values. In DeepSeeks chatbot app, for example, R1 wont answer questions about Tiananmen Square or Taiwans autonomy. In March, DeepSeek surpassed 16.5 million visits. [F]or March, DeepSeek is in second place, despite seeing traffic drop 25% from where it was in February, based on daily visits, David Carr, editor at Similarweb, told TechCrunch. It still pales in comparison to ChatGPT, which surged past 500 million weekly active users in March.A disruptive approachIf DeepSeek has a business model, its not clear what that model is, exactly. The company prices its products and services well below market value and gives others away for free. Its also not taking investor money, despite a ton of VC interest. The way DeepSeek tells it, efficiency breakthroughs have enabled it to maintain extreme cost competitiveness. Some experts dispute the figures the company has supplied, however.Whatever the case may be, developers have taken to DeepSeeks models, which arent open source as the phrase is commonly understood but are available under permissive licenses that allow for commercial use. According to Clem Delangue, the CEO of Hugging Face, one of the platforms hosting DeepSeeks models, developers on Hugging Face have created over 500 derivative models of R1 that have racked up 2.5 million downloads combined.DeepSeeks success against larger and more established rivals has been described as upending AI and over-hyped. The companys success was at least in part responsible for causing Nvidias stock price to drop by 18% in January, and for eliciting a public response from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. In March, U.S. Commerce department bureaus told staffers that DeepSeek will be banned on their government devices, according to Reuters.Microsoft announced that DeepSeek is available on its Azure AI Foundry service, Microsofts platform that brings together AI services for enterprises under a single banner. When asked about DeepSeeks impact on Metas AI spending during its first-quarter earnings call, CEO Mark Zuckerberg said spending on AI infrastructure will continue to be a strategic advantage for Meta. In March, OpenAI called DeepSeek state-subsidized and state-controlled, and recommends that the U.S. government consider banning models from DeepSeek.During Nvidias fourth-quarter earnings call, CEO Jensen Huang emphasized DeepSeeks excellent innovation, saying that it and other reasoning models are great for Nvidia because they need so much more compute. At the same time, some companies are banning DeepSeek, and so are entire countries and governments, including South Korea. New York state also banned DeepSeek from being used on government devices. As for what DeepSeeks future might hold, its not clear. Improved models are a given. But the U.S. government appears to be growing wary of what it perceives as harmful foreign influence. In March, The Wall Street Journal reported that the U.S. will likely ban DeepSeek on government devices. This story was originally published January 28, 2025, and will be updated regularly.

Apex installs UKs first ENESKApostprocess system for metal AM post-processing
Apex Additive Technologies, a Wales-based company specializing in end-to-end metal additive manufacturing, has installed the first ENESKApostprocess system in the United Kingdom. The system, developed by German manufacturer joke Technology and distributed in the UK by Moleroda Finishing Systems, is designed to reduce health and safety risks during AM post-processing by containing and extracting hazardous dust particles at the source.ENESKApostprocess features a 0.75m sealed cabin that accommodates both small and large metal 3D printed parts. The system uses an ATEX-rated filter to extract airborne particulates during operations such as grinding or polishing. The glove box design prevents operator exposure by locking the access door until air quality inside exceeds ambient standards. Operators are able to use high-rpm air tools and micromotors within the enclosure, eliminating the need for additional personal protective equipment while maintaining ergonomic access and repeatability. The Apex Additive Technologies team at their Digital Manufacturing Centre of Excellence in Wales. Photo via Moleroda Finishing Systems.Post-processing at high surface speeds can be extremely hazardous due to the generation of fine metallic dusts, which pose significant risks to both health and workplace cleanliness, said Youssef Beshay, Founder and CEO of Apex Additive Technologies. These particulates also present a high risk from a DSEAR perspective, demanding stringent control measures. Our ENESKApostprocess addresses all these concerns in one system: fine dusts are contained and immediately extracted through an ATEX-rated filter, ensuring no operator exposure whatsoever, thanks to the glove box design.Apex, which operates from its Digital Manufacturing Centre of Excellence in Wales, collaborated with Moleroda to identify a solution that addressed operator safety while maintaining high-quality output. Since installation, the ENESKApostprocess has been used for support removal, powder elimination, build-plate separation, and fine surface smoothingessential steps in the post-processing of metal 3D printed parts. We are proud to be the first in the UK to install this cutting-edge technology, Beshay added. We expect many AM companies will soon follow suit, given the unparalleled health and safety benefits it provides. The ENESKApostprocess system now in use at Apex. Photo via Moleroda Finishing Systems.Industrial use cases highlight evolving demands in AM post-processingUK-based aerospace firm Airframe Designs recently expanded its additive manufacturing capabilities by acquiring a second Fortus 450mc FDM 3D printer. The industrial-scale printer, supplied by Tri-Tech 3D, has been used in the National Aerospace Technology Exploitation Programme (NATEP) to fabricate airworthy components using water-soluble supports. The equipment has enabled the company to meet accuracy tolerances of 0.5 mm and deliver complex 25-part assemblies in as little as four working days. With its ability to process certified materials for tooling and end-use aerospace parts, the Fortus 450mc has allowed the firm to scale production while maintaining repeatability and reliability.Multi-material printing has also seen recent developments with the installation of an MMJ ProX 3D printer at Fraunhofer IKTS by AMAREA Technology. The MMJ ProX enables the combination of up to six different materials in a single print job using droplet-based thermoplastic deposition. The system allows for precise tuning of properties such as hardness, conductivity, and chemical resistance, while its rapid cooling and material reusability support dimensional stability and process efficiency. With droplet sizes ranging from 0.5 to 50.0 nanoliters and layer thicknesses between 70 and 300 m, the MMJ ProX has been positioned for applications across aerospace, energy, electronics, and medical sectors.Ready to discover who won the 20243D Printing Industry Awards?Subscribe to the 3D Printing Industry newsletter to stay updated with the latest news and insights.Featured image shows the Apex Additive Technologies team. What Are Stablecoins?
During the 2024 elections, the crypto industry spent an unprecedented amount of money on campaign donations in the hopes of encouraging Congress to pass pro-crypto legislation. Those efforts seem to have largely succeeded, with pro-crypto legislators filling the halls of Congress. The first crypto-related area theyve decided to tackle? Stablecoin regulation.Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies designed to hold the value of a U.S. dollar. Proponents argue that stablecoins help the U.S. preserve the global importance of the dollar, while allowing people worldwide to transact more freely, cheaply, and securely. Stablecoin usage is growing enormously: its total market cap is around $235 billion, up from $152 billion just a year ago. In March, President Trump said that he hoped to sign stablecoin legislation by August. Congress has responded accordingly: In the past month, both the House and Senate have advanced stablecoin bills out of committee.Heres a brief overview of stablecoins, the proposed legislation, and potential risks. What are stablecoins and who supports them?Stablecoins are somewhat like bank deposits. Typically, a consumer who wants a stablecoin gives a dollar to an issuing company, who mints a stablecoin on a blockchain. The user can then send that stablecoin around the world as a form of payment to anyone who accepts it. Crypto traders like stablecoins because they do not fluctuate in price nearly as much as assets like Bitcoin or Ethereum, making trading more predictable. And many non-traders across the world appreciate stablecoins because they hold their value better than currencies in countries with high inflation, like Argentina and Turkey. In the U.S., stablecoin supporters come from across the political spectrum. On the right, political leaders like House Majority Whip Tom Emmer argue that stablecoins help maintain the dollars status as the worlds reserve currency. A massive number of Eurodollarsunsecured, unofficial dollars that are issued by foreign banks as opposed to the Federal Reserveremain in circulation across the world. Stablecoins could fill this significant demandand offer a safer, more transactable alternative. And because stablecoin issuers often secure their stablecoins by buying U.S. Treasuries, an increase in stablecoin demand could help ease the burden of the U.S.s ballooning debt, proponents argue. On the left, some Democrats believe that stablecoins provide paths to financial inclusion and toward dismantling biased banking systems. New York Representative Ritchie Torres told TIME in September that he believed stablecoins could help constituents in his heavily-immigrant district send money home to the Caribbean and Latin America quickly, while avoiding check-cashing fees or predatory loan sharks. The ability to move a tokenized dollar at the speed of the blockchain has the potential to create a better, cheaper, and faster payment system for the lowest-income communities, he said. Torres was one of six Democrats who voted in favor of the STABLE Act, which passed out of the House Financial Services Committee on April 2.What are the main stablecoins, and how is Trump now involved? The stablecoin market is currently dominated by two players: USDT (issued by Tether) and USDC (issued by Circle). Tether is extremely popular outside the U.S. but has been accused by regulators of making misleading statements about its reserves. Howard Lutnick, Trumps new Commerce Secretary, previously had financial ties to the company. The bills being considered by Congress would open the door for many other types of companies to issue their own stablecoins. Notably, the Trump familys crypto company World Liberty Financial recently announced its own stablecoin. This is just the latest of Trumps crypto ventures, which have included a federal Bitcoin reserve and a meme coin.World Libertys stablecoin announcement drew swift criticism over concerns that Trump would yet again have a direct financial stake in an industry he is supposed to regulate. California Democrat Maxine Waters, who has been working on stablecoin legislation for years, now says she staunchly opposes any bill that would allow Trump to own a stablecoin. French Hill, a Republican from Arkansas and the House Financial Services Committee Chair, said this week that Trumps crypto initiatives made drafting legislation more complicated. What kind of legislation is being considered? Both the House and Senate have passed stablecoin billsThe STABLE and GENIUS Acts, respectivelyout of their respective committees. The bills lay out guidelines for how stablecoins will be regulated, and the amount and types of reserves stablecoin issuers must have on hand. The House and Senate will now have the opportunity to reconcile the two bills in the hopes of getting a unified bill onto President Trumps desk by the summer. If legislation passes, many financial institutions would likely seek to create their own stablecoin. Bank of America, for instance, said it would launch a stablecoin once lawmakers make it legal to do so. PayPal and Stripe have also announced stablecoin initiatives. What are the main critiques of stablecoin legislation? The appetite in Washington for a stablecoin bill is high among legislators on both sides of the aisle. But some lawmakers have raised concerns. Elizabeth Warren, one of the most vocal crypto skeptics in Congress, has argued that the legitimization of stablecoins comes with systemic risks, especially because they could be susceptible to bank runs. In 2022, the stablecoin UST caused a massive crypto crash when it lost its dollar peg and hurtled to zero. UST, however, was an algorithmic stablecoin, a type of currency that the STABLE Act bans from getting federal approval for two years. The bill lacks basic safeguards necessary to ensure that stablecoins dont blow up our entire financial system, Warren said at a hearing for the GENIUS Act in March. Under this bill, stablecoin issuers can invest in risky assets, including the very assets that were bailed out in 2008.Some critics also worry that the stablecoin bills, as they are currently written, allow for Big Tech companies like Meta and X to issue their own currencies, further consolidating corporate power. If people think there's a Big Tech surveillance state now, imagine what there would be when they have access to every piece of financial information about you, says Arthur Wilmarth, a professor emeritus at George Washington University Law School. There's very little, if anything, in the bills that would give you protection.

  • Microsoft's $350 Windows 365 Link cloud client is now available
In context: The "thin client" concept is almost as old as computing itself, dating back to the first terminals used to access mainframe computers in early multi-user systems. Today, thin clients are primarily used in the enterprise market to simplify the management of employees and off-site operations and Microsoft clearly wants a piece of that. Microsoft announced the Windows 365 Link in November and is now beginning to offer the new device to customers in select markets. Link is the first custom system the company has built specifically to access cloud computing resources within the Windows 365 ecosystem, though third-party manufacturers have been offering similar systems for quite some time. From a hardware perspective, the Windows 365 Link is a compact, purpose-built device designed to do just one thing: connect users to Microsoft's cloud infrastructure. It cannot perform any productive tasks without first accessing a Microsoft cloud account. However, Redmond noted that its local processing capabilities are sufficient to handle high-performance video playback during remote meetings.More than 100 organizations helped Microsoft test the Link through a dedicated preview program, and the company says it has refined the remote computing experience based on that feedback. Setting up the thin client takes only a few minutes with minimal configuration, according to Microsoft. IT professionals can manage the device via the Microsoft Intune platform, while end users can easily access their Windows 365 Cloud PC accounts from remote locations. The Windows 365 Link has no local storage capabilities, meaning employees cannot save files on the device or launch programs outside their cloud environment. According to Microsoft, the client is secure by design, featuring technologies such as Secure Boot, Trusted Platform Module, BitLocker, and Hypervisor Code Integrity all of which are permanently enabled and cannot be turned off.Windows 365 Link is now available for purchase in the US, United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, and New Zealand, with a suggested retail price of $350 in the US. However, the device is not aimed at traditional consumers. Microsoft recommends that interested buyers contact their Microsoft account representative or purchase through select resellers like Insight Enterprises and SHI International. // Related StoriesWhile the Windows 365 Link marks Microsoft's first venture into the thin client hardware market, several OEMs already offer similar "dumb" clients optimized for accessing Windows cloud environments on Azure or other platforms. Moreover, Windows 365 Cloud PC subscriptions can be accessed via a web browser or the Windows App, so enterprise organizations don't need to rush to deploy thousands of Link devices just yet.

A $2,300 iPhone? The recent tariffs make that a possibility
Apples iPhone might see a serious price hike in response to the recent tariffs, according to a report from Rosenblatt Securities. Analysts suggest the tariffs could result in a price increase of anywhere from 30% to 40%, if Apple chooses to pass the increased costs on to consumers. Neil Shah, an analyst from Counterpoint Research, suggests Apple would need to increase prices by 30% on average, while Rosenblatt analysts say the number is closer to 43%. To illustrate what that might look like, take a look at the current $799 price point for the iPhone 16. If its price increases by 43%, it would come out to around $1,142. On the other hand, the iPhone 16 Pro Max currently priced at $1,599 for its base model could jump to just under $2,300 ($2,286.57, to be exact.) Recommended VideosApple faces a difficult choice. Increasing the price of its phones to cover the cost of tariffs would result in fewer sales, as it would become more of a luxury item that those with limited budgets couldnt afford. A report from earlier this year showed that more people are buying used iPhones than new, and an increase in price would only further that trend. Andy Boxall / Digital TrendsEven the current cheapest iPhone, the iPhone 16e, would see a tremendous hike. It starts at $599, but would jump to more than $850 per unit. Amid the controversy surrounding Apples failure to fulfill its promises of a smarter, improved Siri, iPhone sales have floundered.RelatedChina responded to the tariffs by announcing reciprocal tariffs of 34%. Considering that many iPhones are still manufactured in China, alongside necessary components, this will result in even further price hikes. The end result of the tariffs isnt clear, but it seems obvious that the price of electronics and other consumer goods will increase by a not-inconsequential amount. Editors Recommendations
