WWW.GADGETS360.COMDinosaurs Weren’t Doomed Before the Asteroid Hit, New Research SuggestsPhoto Credit: Wikimedia Commons Dinosaurs peaked 76 million years ago, then declined after the asteroid impact Highlights Dinosaurs were thriving before the asteroid hit Fossil and Climate data show no signs of decline Catastrophic impact caused abrupt mass extinction Advertisement Scientists say that dinosaurs weren't doomed when an asteroid hit Earth. Fossil unearthings before the asteroid collision, at the end of the Cretaceous epoch, show that dinosaurs were losing variety and numbers. At first, some scientists thought this alteration showed dinosaurs were headed toward extinction even before the fatal asteroid incident. Nevertheless, this concept has long been argumentative, with other researchers insisting that dinosaur diversity was doing just fine at the time of their loss of life.Challenging the Long-Held NarrativeAccording to a report by Live Science, the visible rarity of dinosaurs before their extinction may merely be due to a low fossil record. Emphasizsng four families—that is, the Ankylosauridae, Ceratopsidae, Hadrosauridae, and Tyrannosauridae—the studies of the scientists reveal records of approximately 8,000 fossils from North America dating to the Campanian age (83.6 million to 72.1 million years ago) and Maastrichtian age (72.1 million to 66 million years ago).Th range of dinosaurs peaked 76 million years ago and started to shrink after the asteroid collision wiped off the nonavian dinosaurs. This drift was more pronounced than in the 6 million years before the mass annihilation, with the number of fossils from all four families reducing in the geological record.Fossil Records and Statistical Models Paint a New PictureVegetation either covered or obscured geological outcrops from the Maastrichtian period in North America. Specifically, rock from this time that might contain dinosaur fossils was not easily accessible to the researchers who were searching for them. The study's encapsulation might also have worldwide branching due to North America being home to half of the familiar fossils from this age.A Catastrophic Exception, Not a Gradual EndThere is no evidence of environmental conditions or other aspects that would specifically elaborate the reason of this decline, the researchers landed. All of the dinosaur broods were far-flung, as per models come into being developed by the researchers — and consequently at low risk for extinction, barring a catastrophic event such as the asteroid effect. In the group of 8,000 fossil records evaluated, the team found that ceratopsians—a group that includes horned dinosaurs like Triceratops and its relatives — were the most common; most likely, they inhabited plain regions that were most conducive to preservation during the Maastrichtian era. GAMINGBOLT.COMDisney Illusion Island Starring Mickey and Friends is Coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on May 30News Disney Illusion Island Starring Mickey and Friends is Coming to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on May 30 A physical release for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S has also been planned for release on May 30 in North America and June 27 in Europe. Posted By Joelle Daniels | On 09th, Apr. 2025 Disney and developer Dlala Studios have officially confirmed that Disney Illusion Island Starring Mickey and Friends is coming to PC (via Steam, Microsoft Store and GOG), PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. While the digital release is slated for release on May 30, the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions will also be getting physical editions which come with an exclusive poster on May 30 in North America and June 27 in Europe. As part of the new multiplatform release, Disney Illusion Island Starring Mickey and Friends is also getting new content in the form of Scrooge offering the playable characters a new special ability called Dig! This ability can then be turned in for permanent upgrades for a new game mode dubbed Cave Adventuring Scavenger Hunt (C.A.S.H.). This new content will also be released on Nintendo Switch. Getting ready for its release on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, a new trailer for Disney Illusion Island Starring Mickey and Friends has been released. Check it out below. The trailer gives us quick glimpses at each of the four playable characters, before giving us a wider look at its gorgeous art style and levels and character designs. As the trailer indicates, along with the new content, Disney Illusion Island‘s multiplatform release will also bring with it sharper visuals thanks to the higher resolution output that is possible on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The multi-platform release was first hinted at earlier this week when PSDeals was able to scrape through PlayStation Store’s backend for details about the release. The game will include all of the gameplay features from the original Nintendo Switch release, including offline co-op multiplayer for between 2 and 4 players, along with the ability for players to help each other by using unique abilities. Disney Illusion Island was originally announced back in September 2022. It was eventually released on the Nintendo Switch, even getting a trailer leading up to its July 2023 release date. The trailer gave us a glimpse at some of the areas that players would be exploring in the game, as well as some of the special abilities of each of the four playable characters. In Disney Illusion Island, players take on the role of Mickey, Minnie, Goofy or Donald as they set forth to explore the titular island. The game has been structured like other metroidvania titles, complete with players needing to explore every nook and cranny in order to find upgrades and shortcuts that will help them progress further through its story. Back when it came out, the title got generally positive reviews. Its Metacritic aggregate sits at around 73, and in our own review for the game, we gave it a score of 8 out of 10. While we praised the game for great visuals and animations, as well as the general charm it exudes thanks to its witty writing, we did find some of its gameplay mechanics a on the shallower end, and the lack of combat offering up some awkward boss fights here and there. WWW.RESETERA.COMReturnal may have defeated me.jett Community Resettler Member Oct 25, 2017 46,031 This game has been mostly a frustrating struggle in making it through each of biomes, but I think I might have had enough with biome 5. Getting through biome 4 is not really fun, its enemy configurations are annoying to deal with even if I can get past them, but when I reach biome 5 I just get melted from every direction possible. Reaching the FUCK THIS point. I really like how the game plays and how the controls feel overall, but I gotta say I'm not sure how much fun the 20 hours I have put into it have been exactly. I wonder if they will make changes to Saros in regards to general mainstream accessibility. Runs are WAY too long and too similar to each other. Good gameplay, but the rest is terribly boring. harinezumi Member Oct 27, 2017 20,066 Buenos Aires, Argentina I felt very similarly and ended up never beating it. I still intend to return to it at some point but... yeah. sazz Member Aug 3, 2020 5,958 London, UK my personal experience was that after finally beating biome 3 the rest of the game was a cake walk Socivol Member Oct 25, 2017 7,258 I will play it coop with you and help you get through it just PM me. Returnal is tough but the gameplay is just so addicting. AzorAhai Member Oct 29, 2017 8,189 I beat it but I understand. Biome 5 is ruthless. You have seen most of the game anyway, so take a break and try again later or wait for Saros, which will probably more balanced/accessible. Edit : oh, Socivol offer is a great alternative! Duxxy3 Member Oct 27, 2017 24,423 USA I haven't played the game in just under two years. My run is still active and it's the furthest I've ever been. So I haven't won, but I technically haven't lost yet either. Lord Error Member Oct 27, 2017 5,128 If you got that far, I assure you, you can do it. I thought I didn't have what it takes to finish the game and have proven myself wrong spectacularly, to the point that I ended up being able to play it almost on autopilot. Just find some good gun upgrades for guns that you probably don't normally use, and it may transform the game for you. Now that you are where you are, you can retry biome 5 quickly anyway. Blindy Member Nov 16, 2017 4,071 Game goes downhill after Biome 4, especially when I played it on launch(on a technical standpoint alone but I know it got patched up). The gauntlet runs of Biome 5 are a bit much but Biome 6 was the worst thing from a technical perspective that I played in a while from Sony. Final boss glitch, and audio glitch due to a weapon. Shame because that Biome 4 boss is one of the best non-Soulsbourne boss fights this generation. Patitoloco Member Oct 27, 2017 27,470 It defeated me as well, I get it. WildArms Member Apr 30, 2022 2,676 I gave up after the first boss fight attempt and the first biome. I understand rogue likes now but.... F that, man. I do t have the patience for it. I also played it on launch and I heard they made it a lot easier since but still. The difficulty? The most type of difficult content I'll try is like... The hardest content available in a Monster Hunter game or beating a FromSoft game. Gestault Member Oct 26, 2017 14,540 I recommend sticking with it and just coming back later, but something I ALWAYS feel compelled to spell out is that the game has some bullshit RNG structure to when the game design decides you "should" lose. You can have an incredibly optimized build for any number of specific traits, and it'll set you up in a fight that might as well ignore your specs so that whole run ends up being a waste of time, you effectively have to lose. You can mitigate it as you unlock more relics, but that bullshit chance is always present, and I think it makes the game worse. Mr.Deadshot Member Oct 27, 2017 22,711 It's bullshit, I have no time and motivation to replay the game dozens of times to reach the end. Hades showed how a roguelite should be done. But I'd wish even more that Returnal was a normal third person story shooter because the core mechanics and artstyle of the game are really good. Elandyll Avenger Oct 25, 2017 9,443 The first 3 biomes were frustrating, with the biped aliens almost reaching my limit. Then, not sure how, I found some weapons and upgrades that worked, and ended up reframing my play time in journey rather than goal (the update allowing to resume play also helped a lot), and it clicked fully. Ended up platinuming the game and having the best time. I should go back and try the tower sometime. Jalen Member Dec 18, 2017 260 Biome 5 defeated me too. Really was enjoying it up to that point, but just was getting melted, similar to you. modsbox Member Oct 28, 2017 816 Take a look at the returnal subreddit for some tips. 5 is completely doable with the right strategy, but TL;DR-- - get an electropylon driver - remember that you're invincible when grappling - in the large open areas with the drones just run to the exit, don't try to kill everything. - there's no final boss so don't worry about saving large health for a boss fight Baobab Member Feb 4, 2021 1,274 Indeed it is not a balanced game. I think that hurt the game´s potential of success a lot. The guns can get stupid OP in short order. Some rocket launcher variants are basically super homing missile spam that can nuke even elite mobs in less than 10 seconds. You don't even have to really aim Audiblee Member Mar 14, 2025 507 I thought the difficulty peaked in biome 3. Everything after felt much easier, notably the final boss, who is a cakewalk. The game is not easy though, and a lot of it comes down to weapon and upgrade choices. hydrophilic attack Corrupted by Vengeance Member Oct 25, 2017 23,311 Sweden biome 5 is definitely the big difficulty spike. if you can push through it you will be able to beat the game if you beeline to the boss in the final biome, because while the final biome in and of itself is tough, its boss is very easy saros will likely be easier yes, or rather, it will have more obvious metaprogression, that's what "come back stronger" hinting at ALXJ REFANTAZIO SWEEP Uncle Works at Nintendo Member Feb 16, 2021 1,045 belieeeeeve try new weapons, be picky and restart runs, search every blue room and spend! that! currency! as everyone here talked, if you beat biome 3 the game gets easier. i believe in you :3 Remember Me Member Apr 3, 2018 323 Spain I didn't event get to biome 2. EvaUnit787 Member Aug 6, 2023 2,711 I wonder if you have gotten all the good weapon and other upgrades because by the time I got to Biome 5 it was not that hard and I could easily move ahead. I think my wall was biome 3 and the homing enemies, but the right combination of weapons can make it so damn easy Alienous Member Oct 25, 2017 9,866 In terms of advice I would say just focus on the dash. It's not so much a dodge as it is temporary invulnerability. So dashing into projectiles so you can get them behind you, for instance. Dashing left / right, or forward / back to keep a solid position. The game is the dashing - you might just need to be more proactive with how you use it. Jahranimo Community Resettler Member Oct 25, 2017 10,113 Biome 5 was the wall for me, but I'd say once you find your right weapon roll and you take your time with the bosses it's more manageable. yencid Member Oct 27, 2017 561 Honestly the game becomes a cakewalk once you realize what weapons and perks are OP in the game. Was 2 trophies away from plat but i think my game got bugged and the RNG never gave me the items i needed. Rodney McKay Member Oct 26, 2017 13,739 Most rogue-likes are like this for me, even super popular ones like Hades. Each level is just another leap you need to make in your pure technical skill to progress, on top of the usual randomness of your upgrades. So one run you might luck out and have a weapon you click with and all the upgrades make it a breeze up to a certain point. But then you die, and you don't get nearly as far because you just didn't have the same luck. I got to the final boss in Dead Cells once (before all the DLC) after having a great run but then I died and it just sapped all my motivation to keep playing the game. I know that's literally the genre, and I might just fundamentally not like that aspect of it. But I have a feeling that there might be a game someday that has all these elements and doesn't frustrate me. Maybe something in between the simplicity and passivity of a Vampire Survivor, and the extreme difficulty and high skill requirements of a Hades or Returnal. MadMod Member Dec 4, 2017 4,565 Just wanna let you know that I can beat the whole game start to finish within 45 mins now, it gets much easier haha. WWW.POLYGON.COMThe 25 best Nintendo Switch gamesLooking for the best games on Nintendo Switch? What follows is a living list of the 25 Switch games we recommend everyone play or watch — in case you’re new to the system or you’re just looking for something new to play.At 8 years old, and in the shadow of the launch of the Switch 2, the Switch is definitely in its twilight years. But its best games will be relevant for years to come, if only because the Switch 2 will be backward-compatible. These will be some of the key titles for the next-generation Nintendo handheld, too. Thanks to the Switch’s long life and massive success, its software library is vast and kind of intimidating. As well as first-party Nintendo classics, the Switch hosts a thriving indie game scene and much more besides. We’re here to guide you through it. You’ll find Mario and Zelda here, of course, plus many other Nintendo games, but we’ve included a few more left-field picks, too.The Switch also has a library of retro games available as part of a Nintendo Switch Online subscription, including many, many all-time Nintendo classics. We’ve listed our picks from this collection separately in our guide to the best retro games for Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers. Our latest update added Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. How we pick the best games on Nintendo SwitchThe Polygon staff plays a lot of video games, and everything in this list comes personally recommended by at least one of us. We determined what should be on our list of the best Switch games by looking at the quality of each title, but also with an eye for breadth and variety — so you should find something on the list you’ll enjoy, no matter what genres of game you like, how much time you have, or what vibe you are after.Animal Crossing: New Horizons$57$605% off$57You find yourself on a deserted island and a large raccoon presents you with a house mortgage. Welcome to Animal Crossing: New Horizons, one of the most bizarre — yet broadly appealing — games on the Nintendo Switch. The series has always been about living among animal villagers while completing simple tasks like fishing and bug catching. But New Horizons, with its gorgeous graphics and incredible customization options, has really stepped the franchise up dramatically. The entire island is now open to customization, letting you place everything from the placement of rivers to the design printed on vendor stalls that line your streets.New Horizons is also profoundly kid-friendly, allowing youngsters to create their own homes on a shared, family island. If you’re looking to connect with people outside of your family unit, there’s full online connectivity for up to eight players at once.Looking for a chill experience to wind down after a rough day? There’s really no better option than Animal Crossing: New Horizons. —Russ Frushtick$57 at GameStop$15“Roguelike deck-builder” must be near the top of the video gaming genre bingo rankings these days; card games where you draw and build decks to progress though a single-player scenario that resets if you fail are extremely fashionable with developers, even if few have reached the heights of Slay the Spire. In 2024, though, we have a new contender for the crown — Balatro.Balatro’s hook is very simple: it’s poker-themed. The aim of the game is to assemble poker hands from the cards in your deck to beat a score target. But developer LocalThunk piles on the modifiers, with variant cards that apply score multipliers under certain conditions, and Jokers and boss stages that toss gaming-altering rules into the mix. The presentation is woozily abstract, with a slightly sinister edge. The result is a totally compulsive game of luck, tactics, and puzzle-solving that’s almost impossible to put down. —Oli Welsh$15 at Nintendo$30 at Target (Special Edition)Dragon Quest Builders 2$50$50Mixing a venerable — in fact, the original — series of Japanese role-playing games with Minecraft sounds like a nightmarish, trend-chasing mashup straight out of a Square Enix executive’s fever dream. And maybe that is how it came about. But the fact is that Dragon Quest Builders 2 works far better than it has any right to.The sequel is the one to go for; in the first game, you can sense the developers’ surprise that this strange flavor combination was actually coming together, and Builders 2 is the game where the idea is fully fleshed out and all the kinks are smoothed away. It’s amazingly fun and compelling to embark on a cute RPG-lite adventure while hacking away at the blocky landscape and building your house to your personal specifications — in fact, there’s a dash of Animal Crossing in this fruity cocktail, too. A joyous, monster-smashing, resource-collecting, furniture-crafting loop. —OW$50 at NintendoDredge$25$25As an outdoorsy New Englander who owns a kayak, I take frequent advantage of access to ponds and lakes carved out by Ice Age glaciers, now filled with water that’s clear all the way to the bottom. Paddling and fishing in such places is the opposite of scary; it’s the most soothing hobby you could imagine. But alongside these experiences, I have also met with the horror of their opposite. I’m talking about brackish, brown ponds full of fish that are unsafe to touch, let alone eat. I’m talking about that infamous “dirty water” of the Charles River. And I am talking about the water in Dredge. If you have never paddled or fished in water like this, you may not understand how unnerving it can be, especially when you’re far from the shoreline and you see something — you’re not sure what — moving somewhere deep underneath you, but not quite deep enough. That said, Dredge is as much a “cozy game” as it is a horror game; much of your time playing it will be spent fishing, and some of what you catch will be quite ordinary at first. But as you continue in your exploration of these strange shorelines, eventually in search of beings that can only be caught in the blackest of night, when your sanity is on its very edges of remaining intact… you will understand, perhaps, why I prefer to sail in clear water. You just never know. —Maddy Myers$25 at Nintendo$30 at Amazon (Deluxe Edition)Fire Emblem: Three Houses$60$60The Fire Emblem franchise is a bizarre amalgam of many genres, from strategy to relationship simulator. The first Switch installment, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, maintains the strong strategy roots while fleshing out the events between battles. There’s now a fully explorable school where players can interact with their units, give them presents, and even take them to tea! The academy succeeds in making players feel emotionally attached to these characters, which makes losing them in combat even more brutal. The game’s three campaigns are massive, each taking around 50 hours to complete, with plenty of branching options and multiple endings. The sheer length of it makes it a perfect fit on Switch, where it’s easy to stop and start at a moment’s notice. If you’re looking for a strategy epic with the scope of Game of Thrones (but with more tea parties), Fire Emblem: Three Houses succeeds mightily. —RF$60 at Amazon$60 at NintendoHades$25$25Any list of the best Nintendo Switch games that doesn’t include even a mention of Supergiant Games’ “godlike” roguelike dungeon crawler hardly qualifies as a definitive list at all.Hades was Polygon’s 2020 game of the year and the Switch is (arguably) the best way to play it. The game follows Zagreus, the rebellious son of the god of the underworld, who attempts to escape his father’s realm to reach Mount Olympus in a quest to be reunited with his long lost mother. To do so however, he’ll have to overcome a gauntlet of his father’s most powerful servants and commanders before facing off with the old man himself.Hades is a compulsively playable roguelike, packed with satisfying moment-to-moment gameplay; a wealth of variability in terms of weapons, upgrades, and assorted powers; and numerous secrets and challenges that will test even the most experienced of gamers. That’s not even mentioning the game’s story, a branching narrative that perfectly paces itself as Zagreus undergoes his many, many trials to escape from the Underworld and uncover the mystery of his estranged family’s past. With the sequel just around the corner, now’s as good a time as any to acquaint yourself with one of the very best indie titles to grace the Switch. —Toussaint Egan$25 at Nintendo$25 at TargetHollow Knight$15$15It took a little while for Hollow Knight to finally arrive on Switch after a successful launch on PC, but that delay paid off. It may be the greatest Metroidvania ever made, and it has found a perfect home, especially when played in handheld mode. There’s a level of copy-and-paste roteness to games of this genre, but Hollow Knight manages to create a handcrafted world that is massive, eerie, and beautiful, all the while adding to the Metroidvania formula in a number of unexpected ways. And since it’s a 2D game, you can explore this world for lengthy play sessions without worrying that your Switch’s battery will die within an hour or two. —RF$15 at Nintendo$15 at TargetKirby and the Forgotten Land$57$605% off$57Kirby and the Forgotten Land achieved instant viral fame on its reveal because, in the trailer, Kirby swallows a car, an actual car, and sort of becomes it, via his new Mouthful Mode. It was a great way of illustrating the little pink blob’s power — inhale things and assume their attributes — but it also set up a slight perspective shift for the Kirby series. Instead of inhabiting his usual totally surreal, primary-colored, platform-game world, in this game Kirby would explore a place with at least a passing resemblance to the real world. To add to the enjoyably odd cognitive dissonance, it appeared to be a post-apocalyptic world, with malls and buildings all overgrown with vines like in The Last of Us.The trailer might have oversold this angle a bit, but being a Kirby-car is just as fun as it seems, and Forgotten Land is a gem — in fact, it’s probably the best Kirby game ever, as well as the first to take place in a fully 3D world. It’s a colorful, superbly designed, action-packed platformer with tons of abilities and secrets to discover, and it’s particularly good in two-player co-op. Plus, Mouthful Mode lets you be a giant set of stairs. How often do video games do that? —OW$60 at Best Buy$57 at GameStopThe Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom$30$6957% off$30You’d be hard-pressed to find a better game to have on your Nintendo Switch than The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The follow-up to the groundbreaking The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom is no less astounding. This time, players embark on an adventure as Link to find the missing Zelda after Hyrule is struck with a cataclysmic event known as the Upheaval. While it’s not necessary to play Breath of the Wild beforehand, Tears of the Kingdom expands upon the world of the previous game — literally. Players can explore the sky region peppered with floating islands, the varied terrain of the world’s surface, and the ominous underground world of the Depths. Almost like Legos, you’ll collect items and fit them together to build extraordinary, or if you want, completely ordinary machines and structures. Tears of the Kingdom is a technical marvel and will likely be an easy recommendation for me to give for years to come. If you’re new to adventure games or the scale of this adventure daunts you, don’t let that scare you. It’s well worth it to take the leap. —Ana Diaz$70 at Best Buy$30 at WalmartLuigi’s Mansion 3$40$6033% off$40Luigi’s capricious series has only seen three entries since 2001, but the latest on Switch is the strongest by far. Rather than a mansion, Luigi has to clear a haunted motel of ectoplasmic beasts in a quest to save Mario, Peach, and a handful of Toads.Mechanically, the game hasn’t changed much over the last 19 years. Luigi still slowly creeps from room to room looking for levers to pull and ghosts to suck up in his vacuum. But thanks to the increased power of the Switch, the rooms are now filled with all sorts of fun junk to suck up and swing around, which is enormously satisfying.Kid-friendly themes and co-op support throughout the campaign also make this a great pick if you’ve got a youngster in your life. Even kids as young as 5 should be able to handle the low-stakes role of Gooigi, Luigi’s bizarre, intangible alter ego. —RFMario Kart 8 Deluxe$60$60It’s obviously a point of contention, but I believe Mario Kart 8 is the greatest installment of the franchise thus far. Unfortunately, it came out on the Wii U, a console that barely anybody owned. Its arrival on Switch ensures that the most important aspect of Mario Kart is maintained: easy multiplayer. While there are plenty of single-player challenges to keep people busy, Mario Kart has always been a party game franchise, and the fact that every Switch is already packing two controllers is an instant boon.If you happen to have a few more controllers (or better yet, friends with a Switch or two), it’s remarkably easy to get a squad of four, six, or even eight people in the same tournament together. All without the hassle of having wires strewn about your living room. —RF$60 at Nintendo$60 at Target$40Perhaps the most pleasant surprise the Switch has delivered was this theoretically unholy union of Mario, Ubisoft’s madcap mascots the Rabbids, and the turn-based tactics of the XCOM games. It sounds wrong, but it’s very, very right. Director Davide Soliani’s obvious passion for all his disparate inspirations clearly convinced Nintendo, which took the extremely unusual step of licensing Mario to a third-party publisher to enable Soliani’s weird experiment. The result is a total charmer — a genuinely meaty and engaging tactics game given a meta-comedy layer watching Mario firing mortar weapons and Rabbids running around dressed as their favorite Mushroom Kingdom characters. It’s a toss-up between the 2017 original Kingdom Battle and the 2022 sequel Sparks of Hope which is better; I narrowly prefer Kingdom Battle’s grid-based layout and more streamlined approach, but they’re both great. —OW$40 at Nintendo$60For two decades, Metroid Dread was a failed plan. Yoshio Sakamoto, who produced and directed several games in the series since the original Metroid, originally conceived of Dread as a sequel to 2002’s Metroid Fusion, which had given him the idea for the EMMI robots that stalk Samus in Dread. Back in the early 2000s, however, video game technology just wasn’t there yet to realize his vision. Decades later, it was Sakamoto’s partnership with MercurySteam for the Samus Returns remake, as well as the capabilities of the Nintendo Switch, that finally made Metroid Dread possible.Sometimes, a long-held dream does not actually measure up to what its creator imagines, let alone what fans have thought up over years of waiting and wondering. Not so with Metroid Dread. To quote my colleague Russ Frushtick’s review: “I find myself enraptured by Metroid Dread in ways I haven’t felt since 1994’s Super Metroid. […] Dread reimagines the Metroid format with confidence and care, and it trusts the player to make leaps along the way. While following its interwoven path of epic boss fights, satisfying upgrades, and otherworldly environments, all I could think was that this is the Metroid game I’ve been waiting for.”If it weren’t on modern hardware, featuring enemies with abilities that only new tech could possibly accommodate, Metroid Dread would feel like a perfect time capsule — a game that should’ve been released back in the 2000s, soon after Metroid Fusion. Now, instead, it’s proof that Samus Aran’s journey was far from over, and her future is bright with the blaze of super missiles. —M. Myers$60 at Nintendo$60 at Target$60There’s a bewildering number of retro role-playing games emulating the feel of the 16-bit classics on Switch. Few are as refined and elegantly modernized, while staying true to the core ’90s RPG experience, as the Octopath Traveler games. A co-production between Square Enix and Acquire, this pair of games is most famous for debuting the gorgeous “HD-2D” engine, which mixes classically cute pixel-art characters with evocative 3D landscape dioramas and extravagantly drawn boss sprites to create an aesthetic that’s nostalgic and modern at the same time. But it’s not just about looks. Both Octopath Traveler games have a unique story structure: eight distinct heroes band together, but you jump around between chapters of their personal storylines, which only link up at the very end. They also both have a killer turn-based battle system, with a rhythmically satisfying break-and-boost mechanic that ties in beautifully with streamlined but engrossing itemization and party composition tactics. Octopath Traveler 2 is our pick of the pair, but you can’t go far wrong with either. —OW$60 at Nintendo$60 at TargetPikmin 4$57$605% off$57It’s rare that Nintendo’s internal teams make a sequel that’s just a sequel — that’s “the same, but more,” piling on new features and refinements rather than digging into the fundaments of the game design. In the case of Pikmin 4, perhaps they can be forgiven. When it came out in 2023, there hadn’t been a mainline Pikmin game in 10 years. On top of that, the series, which was conceived by Shigeru Miyamoto himself, is so unique it hardly needs reinvention to stand out.Once again, you play a pint-sized space commander ordering a swarm of tiny plant-men to do your bidding: carry treasures, remove obstacles, and fight bizarre bug-like creatures. Once again, the landscapes are humdrum gardens and living rooms turned surreal by their immense size. Pikmin 4 loads this premise with dozens of new complexities, including a trainable bipedal dog-thing for you and your Pikmin to ride. It’s overwhelming at first, but the joyful ease, pleasurable stress, and steady rhythms of the game overcome that feeling swiftly. What’s left is a soothing and adorably unique take on real-time strategy gaming. —OW$60 at Best Buy$57 at GameStopPokémon Sword and Shield$60$60Nintendo’s first Pokémon game on the Switch — Let’s Go! Eevee/Pikachu — was a solid remake of the original 1998 Pokémon adventure. But it wasn’t a brand-new game. Pokémon Sword and Shield is exactly that, with a new cast of monsters to catch and a new world to explore.Granted, there’s been a lot of drama about the fact that not every single Pokémon from every previous game is available in Sword and Shield. But if that’s not a deal-breaker for you, you’ll find a really delightful journey here. The game’s new region, Galar, is inspired by the United Kingdom, with all its rolling hills, lakes, and forests just teeming with adorable beasties.Hardcore Pokémon fans will appreciate enhanced endgame features like the Battle Tower and breeding functionality. But for everyone else, the 20- to 30-hour adventure is filled with fun characters and beautiful vistas, making it feel like a true trip abroad. —RF$60 at Sword$60 at ShieldSplatoon 3$40$6033% off$40A decade ago, you’d never have predicted Nintendo would have a successful, ongoing, online shooter franchise. But here we are: Splatoon is on its third entry and shows no signs of flagging, with strong sales, a brisk update schedule, and an avid community. Who needs Call of Duty?Naturally, it’s deathmatch done the Nintendo way — a harmless game of paintball where the objective is to claim territory by splattering it with paint, not to claim kills. Still, it’s a sophisticated, competitive, and very, very fun team game, and not without a sense of punky cool in its collectable fashions and urban setting.Splatoon 3 has now concluded its two-year run of active updates, but that doesn’t mean it’s dormant. There are still seasonal Splatfests, monthly challenges, and more to keep you engaged. —OW$40 at Best Buy$60 at Nintendo$15The hardest part of Stardew Valley is getting over the hump that you’re paying money for a farming game. Once you do that, you will quickly find yourself and your hours melting away.Created almost entirely by a single designer, Stardew Valley places you in the role of a new farm owner on the edge of a small town. What starts simple (hoeing the dirt, planting seeds, watering seeds), slowly unravels into a far bigger experience, as you build relationships, explore dungeons, and participate in events that bring the world to life. The experience has found no better home than on the Switch, where basic duties can be performed on a mass-transit commute with no loss of fidelity or satisfaction. It’s soothing and Zen-like, a perfect way to wind down after a long day. And yet, at higher levels of play, it can be surprisingly strategic and challenging. —RF$15 at Nintendo$15 at TargetSuper Mario Bros. Wonder$42$6030% off$42Super Mario Bros. Wonder is a glorious romp of a 2D Mario game. While you can play it as you would any other 2D Mario platformer, this game contains a bunch of quirky secrets. In each level, you can find a Wonder Seed that will prompt a psychedelic change in scenery and transform the level. In an early part of the game, this means your usual easygoing grass area is graced with an entire musical number sung by Piranha Plants. What’s even more amazing is how Nintendo implements a scene like this into every single one of the game’s levels. Outside that, the game successfully delivers on the tried-and-true wonders fans have come to expect from a Mario game. New powers like the Elephant Fruit allow Mario to transform into an absolute unit, and players can add on additional bonuses with the badge system. It’s an awe-inspiring game that’s good to play alone or with friends. Given all this, it makes Super Mario Bros. Wonder a great consideration for your game library and a perfect send-off for the Nintendo Switch. —AD$42 at Walmart$45 at Woot$60When it comes to game design, you may think it’s best to leave it up to the professionals. But Super Mario Maker 2 proves that even the least capable among us have a level or two up their sleeves. The game’s approachable controls and interface make tossing together your own Mario creation a breeze. Plus, being able to do it all on the go with the Switch means you can utilize the touchscreen for faster placement and better precision. If designing levels isn’t your thing, Super Mario Maker 2 comes with its own batch of Nintendo-made stages. It also allows you to play an unending supply of fan-created levels, siphoning only the best creations to the top of your list.Fans of the 2D Mario era will love all the unique twists to classic mechanics, and a strong online community means there should be plenty of levels for years to come. —RF$60 at Nintendo$60 at TargetSuper Mario Odyssey$49$6018% off$49Using the building blocks of Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy, and its sequel, Super Mario Odyssey layers in a new range of movements for our favorite plumber. By combining jumps, dodges, and a springboard-esque hat named Cappy, Mario is as nimble as ever. By far our favorite bit of acrobatics involves Mario tucking up in a tight ball and tumbling through the world like a small boulder. But the real twist to Mario Odyssey is the ability to take command of enemies, including the deviously satisfying Pokio, a bird that uses its nose to stab into surfaces before flinging itself upward. It feels so good that I’d fully support a Pokio-led spinoff.Odyssey is a reminder that Nintendo can still reinvent Mario in interesting ways, more than 35 years since he first battled Donkey Kong. —RF$49 at Best Buy$60 at TargetSuper Smash Bros. Ultimate$45$6025% off$45There’s a kitchen-sink aspect to the latest installment of Super Smash Bros. Every single character, stage, and item that has ever appeared in the franchise returns in this outrageously scoped package.Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the most ambitious multiplayer game Nintendo has ever made, but despite the scale, it’s incredibly friendly to newcomers. You’ll start out with just eight characters to choose from, slowly building the gang up to over 70 contenders. A new single-player mode offers up a nice way to experiment with unplayed characters while collecting hundreds of artifacts from gaming history. If you’re having friends over, this and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are must-haves for your Switch. Just make sure you have enough controllers. —RF$45 at Woot$30There are many ways to play Tetris on Switch. You could play Tetsuya Mizuguchi’s superb, hypnotic Tetris Effect, or the interactive documentary Tetris Forever, or the classic Game Boy and NES versions of the original Tetris included with Nintendo Switch Online. But there’s one version of Tetris that’s completely unique to Switch — and just unique all around. Tetris 99 is an online multiplayer Tetris battle royale in which 99 players compete to eliminate each other from lightning rounds through their block-dropping skills. It’s initially chaotic but intensely compelling — a brilliant use of Alexey Pajitnov’s timeless game mechanics in service of a fresh experience.Tetris 99 is a free download, but it requires Nintendo Switch Online to play. You can pick up a 12-month subscription for $19.99, or grab the bundle below including the Big Block DLC, which adds additional game modes. —OW$30 at Nintendo (incl. DLC and 12-month subscription)$20I feel like a modern archaeologist while playing Unpacking. In this game, you unpack boxes one item at a time and arrange objects in a home. With each completed level, you’ll move into a different scene, like a dorm room or your first apartment. By unpacking item by item, you’ll slowly uncover a story behind the characters that inhabit these spaces, what matters most to them and what makes them tick. It’s a surprisingly emotional game and an excellent addition to your Nintendo Switch library. Developer Witch Beam managed to pack a lot into this short game. Unpacking features luxuriously detailed pixel art so you can tell the difference between small items, like kitchen utensils. The simple act of unpacking is enriched with satisfying animation of paper unwrapping and textured audio — the developers added over 14,000 foley audio files to capture every possible sound that can come with picking up, unwrapping, and placing items. Overall, it’s a true jewel of a game where every detail matters. —AD$20 at Nintendo$20 at TargetXenoblade Chronicles 3$50$6017% off$502022’s Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is actually the fourth game in Monolith Soft’s series of expansive, charming, Nintendo-exclusive RPGs — and it’s the most mature and well-rounded of the lot. It’s absolutely massive; it’s got memorable characters and a moving storyline; there’s plenty of satisfying depth in the customization and the combat. This is old-school, maximalist adventuring at its finest. The Xenoblade series can sometimes be corny or gauche — that’s part of where its charm lies — but Xenoblade Chronicles 3 mostly sheds that awkwardness in its earnest revolutionary saga. Our heroes, Noah and Mio, are engineered soldiers trying to slip the shackles of forever war and unite their factions against a greater threat. It’s genuinely epic stuff. —OWSee More:0 Kommentare 0 Anteile 77 Ansichten

WCCFTECH.COMNVIDIA, AMD Price Targets Slashed On Back Of Tariff, Blackwell ConcernsNVIDIA and AMD both saw their price targets cut by TD Cowen today due to problems with compute demand for AMD and potential troubles with next-generation chips for NVIDIA. Both firms have struggled in the stock market this year, with NVIDIA having lost 28% year-to-date while AMD has been down by 31%. TD Cowen has cut NVIDIA's share price target to $140 from an earlier $175 but kept a Buy rating for the stock and maintained it as a Top Compute pick. As for AMD, the firm has reduced the share price target to $110 from $135 and cited tariff-related uncertainty for its decision to do so. AMD, NVIDIA Get Price Targets Slashed By TD Cowen For AMD, TD Cowen sets the dour macroeconomic backdrop at the center of its coverage as it estimates the impact of tariff driven uncertainty on AMD's product demand. Since President Trump announced his tariffs last week, AMD's shares have lost 20.7% and have pared back some of these losses after gaining more than 4% today. AMD's shares, which currently trade around $81, saw their price target cut to $110 from $135 by TD Cowen for a 36% upside. While the firm kept a Buy rating on the stock, it warned that "AMD is fighting both company-specific and broader negative sentiment in compute compounded by tariff overhangs." TD Cowen added that the shares are suffering from a weak data center guidance for the year's frst half, with investors also waiting for the launch of AMD's Instinct accelerator. Due to investors' focus on the data center business, TD Cowen believes that even though AMD can benefit from robust performance in its Client segment, the performance will not translate into share price performance. It notes that "if macro conditions stay as they are currently, estimates will likely come down to reflect the uncertain macro backdrop, but with limited granularity we choose a wait and see approach with our models." While NVIDIA's shares have also taken a beating this year and are down since the tariff announcement, percentage-wise, they've fared better than AMD's stock. Year-to-date and since the tariff announcement, NVIDIA's shares have lost 28% and 9.9%. In its note, TD Cowen reduces NVIDIA's share price target to $140 from $175 and keeps a Buy rating on the stock. The bank also maintained the stock as a Top Pick. The firm believes that NVIDIA's Blackwell GPUs will drive its narrative during the current and next quarters. NVIDIA's Blackwell GB200 server racks will drive share tailwinds, adds TD Cowen, as it outlines that market digestion of the racks in terms of deployment will determine NVIDIA's performance. According to the note, the shift between Blackwell and Blackwell Ultra will also be a key factor in NVIDIA's future. However, the GPU firm's technology lead is indisputable according to TD Cowen. "NVIDIA Remains Our Top Pick in Compute, Though We See Value in Many for Those Willing to Catch a Falling Knife: Overall, our strongest conviction in the compute bucket both near and long-term remains NVIDIA given its tech leadership—a sharp contrast to its now ~15- turn discount its historical median," writes the firm. 0 Kommentare 0 Anteile 88 Ansichten
