Kennedy, Jr. has become a surprise vaccine advocate amid the growing measles outbreak. His private comments, however, betray his conspiratorial leanings.Following the funeral for eight-year-old Daisy Hildebrand — the second known child to die from measles complications in Texas, the heart of the outbreak — the girl's father told The Guardian that the anti-vaxxer now running America's healthcare seemed to fall down on the job when he came to pay his respects."He did not say that the vaccine was effective," Pete Hildebrand, the father of the unvaccinated girl, told the newspaper of the Health and Human Services secretary. "I had supper with the guy... and he never said anything about that."Despite his public change of heart regarding the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, it's not exactly shocking that Kennedy is privately talking out of both sides of his mouth.Soon after the outbreak of the previously-contained respiratory virus claimed its first life — an unvaccinated six-year-old Mennonite girl who, like Hildebrand, died in West Texas' Gaines County — the brain-wormed political scion not only touted natural treatments over vaccination, but also suggested that immunity was better gained by simply allowing children to get the measles."It used to be, when you and I were kids, that everybody got measles. And the measles gave you lifetime protection against measles infection," Kennedy told Fox News host Sean Hannity during a March interview. "The vaccine doesn’t do that. The vaccine is effective for some people for life, but for many people it wanes."That claim, it's worth noting, is undercut by strong evidence that catching measles weakens a child's immune system so significantly that they may become more susceptible to getting sicker from other illnesses down the line.Like with that first measles death, Kennedy once again sent mixed messages about measles prevention and treatment. Though he reupped his public endorsement of the MMR vaccine, the health secretary and alleged former drug dealer also touted the work, as the Daily Beast reports, of two shady "healers": Ben Edwards, a local antivaxxer who runs a so-called "wellness clinic," and Richard Bartlett, an infamous doctor who was once videotaped digging through hospital trash and who used to misprescribe medications so severely that he was barred from practicing medicine in Texas for two years.Worse, he used a lengthy X post about a Texas toddler who'd survived measles to promote the pair — and once again, there was nary a mention of vaccines in that missive.Regardless of what he says in public, it's clear that Kennedy's antivax bona fides have a home in West Texas. Unfortunately, that includes the father of the latest girl to die from measles."I know [the vaccine is] not effective because some family members ended up getting the vaccine, and they got the measles way worse than some of my kids," Hildebrand told the Guardian after his daughter Daisy's funeral. The university is being investigated by the Department of Education for allegations of antisemitism related to pro-Palestinian protests and of DEI efforts that the administration considers discriminatory. Cornell is one of 60 universities put on a list by the education department in March. Northwestern University was also subject to a funding freeze on Tuesday, according to the university’s student newspaper.Previously, Columbia University agreed to review its admissions procedures, ban face masks for the purpose of concealing one’s identity on campus and put its department of Middle Eastern, South Asian and African studies under a receivership, which is supervision from an authority outside the department, among other concessions.What Cornell research is impacted by the new funding freeze?In a recent statement, Cornell leaders said the grants affected “research into new materials for jet engines, propulsion systems, large-scale information networks, robotics, superconductors, and space and satellite communications, as well as cancer research—work of significance for our national defense, the competitiveness of our economy, and the health of our citizens.” A spokesperson for the university declined to offer further detail.Scientists with knowledge of CHESS, however, said that the frozen funding includes monay from the Air Force Research Laboratory for the Materials Solutions Network at CHESS (MSN-C), a pair of x-ray stations that analyze metals and polymers used in military aircraft, electronics and armor plating. These DOD projects will pause under the stop-work order. The high-energy, high-intensity x-rays produced by Cornell’s synchrotron can only be made in a few facilities around the world. That means the move could significantly affect the U.S. military’s ability to design and test new materials. The beam is also used to investigate unexplained failures in materials that are already in use in planes and other military equipment. The agreement between CHESS and the Air Force Research Laboratory meant that the Department of Defense had priority for projects most crucial to its needs, such as finding ways to manufacture safe but ultra-light airplane parts or ways to 3D print components for replacement parts on far-flung bases or even from sea.In addition, the Air Force funding for MSN-C supported a large portion of CHESS’s core operating expenses, which means the facility will not be able to begin any new non-DOD projects, sources told Scientific American.What comes next?In its recent statement, Cornell’s administration said it was actively seeking to learn more about the basis for the funding freeze from federal officials. University officials at Cornell will likely be watching Columbia’s example: though the latter university agreed to many of the Trump administration’s demands on March 21, and Secretary of Education Linda McMahon told CNN Columbia was “on the right track” to restore its federal funding on March 23, the university is now facing deeper cuts. Science Magazine reported today that the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will now stop all funding to the university, including for existing grants. In 2024, according to Science, Columbia received $690 million from the NIH.

At the cream of the crop, Hori’s Piranha Plant Camera for Nintendo Switch 2 was a standout device just after the console’s big reveal. However, now that the dust has settled and its real specs have released, we can firmly ask: what do you mean the Hori Pirahna Plant Nintendo Switch 2 camera is only 480P? Yep, despite being a USB-C camera that is releasing in the Year of our Lord 2025, the new third-party Switch 2 camera is only 480P. Yeah, 640×480 for a total of 307,200 pixels. Nintendo’s official Nintendo Switch 2 camera is a full 1080p which, let’s face it, is surprisingly competent for a Nintendo product. Let’s be as fair as we possibly can, the Hori Piranha Plant Nintendo Switch 2 camera is cheap. At a price of just £33.99, or your regional equivalent, it is a little cheaper than the £49.99 official option. However, for 67% of the price, you’re getting just 14% of the pixels, and that’s pretty damn crap. Goddamn, it is cute though. When’s the last time you even saw a 480p camera on sale in 2025? Having a gander over on Amazon there are certainly options for just a few quid, but nothing as expensive as £33.99. Although, they don’t come in a cutesy Piranha Plant shell…. At the end of the day, kids are going to see the Hori camera option on the shelves of GameStop or wherever you actually buy gaming accessories in a store anymore, and they’re getting a bum deal. (Is that the term?) While the official Nintendo option looks surprisingly boring for the company that made the ugly 2DS, we’d suggest anyone who wants a Switch 2 Camera to not buy the awesome-looking Piranha Plant option. The screenings will affect people applying for permanent residence status as well as foreigners affiliated with educational institutions. The policy will go into effect immediately. In a statement issued Wednesday morning, the Department of Homeland Security said it will "protect the homeland from extremists and terrorist aliens, including those who support antisemitic terrorism, violent antisemitic ideologies and antisemitic terrorist organizations such as Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Hezbollah, or [the Houthis]." "There is no room in the United States for the rest of the world's terrorist sympathizers, and we are under no obligation to admit them or let them stay here," said DHS Assistant Secretary for Public Affairs Tricia McLaughlin. The announcement comes following the highly publicized arrests and detentions of pro-Palestinian student activists such as Mahmoud Khalil and Rumeysa Ozturk, who the government alleges engaged in antisemitic activities. The administration has doubled down on its enforcement in educational spaces in recent weeks. "It is a privilege to be granted a visa to live & study in the United States of America," Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem posted on X last month. "When you advocate for violence and terrorism that privilege should be revoked and you should not be in this country."

    How a hydrogen explosion led a teenage founder to become Sequoia’s first defense tech investment
    As Sequoia Capital’s first defense tech investment, Mach Industries is an industry darling, raising over $80 million since its founding in 2023. Its founder, Ethan Thornton, now 21, began Mach as a teenage MIT student before dropping out to focus full-time on his startup. But a few months before landing a seed investment from Sequoia in the summer of 2023, Mach had a major setback: a hydrogen gun prototype it was building exploded, sending hundreds of pieces of shrapnel flying and injuring a team member, Forbes first reported. Speaking to TechCrunch during his appearance at StrictlyVC in San Francisco on April 3, Thornton addressed the incident publicly for the first time, saying it happened due to a lack of safety resources. “At the time, we were trying to self-fund it, and we didn’t have the money to sort of run these procedures the way they should have been,” he said. After the explosion, Mach Industries “essentially shut down all work” until it raised funds from Sequoia Capital, Thornton said. Now, with those resources secured, Thornton says Mach has a full safety team and is working with the U.S. military to develop new weapons. The startup has also pivoted away from its initial focus on hydrogen, a gas that’s famously volatile. Speaking at StrictlyVC, Thornton said hydrogen was “probably a bad tech bet” that required further development. But the pivot hasn’t fazed Mach — far from it.  Now, Mach is building different kinds of weapons altogether, such as a new cruise missile and a bomb called “Glide” that can be fired from the edge of space. It also recently landed a U.S. Army contract and announced plans for a network of decentralized factories it calls “Forge.” “Building a lot of prototypes” is a key part of why VCs have poured $85 million into the company, according to Thornton. “It’s not necessarily my ability to build these things, but more so our ability to actually work with the federal government to get programs of record built around them,” he remarked.
