Lofty Math Problem Called Hilbert’s Sixth Closer to Being Solved
April 14, 20254 min readMathematicians Crack 125-Year-Old Problem, Unite Three Physics TheoriesA breakthrough in Hilbert’s sixth problem is a major step in grounding physics in mathBy Jack Murtagh edited by Jeanna BrynerMathematicians suggest they have figured out how to unify three physical theories that explain the motion of fluids. Floriana/Getty ImagesWhen the greatest mathematician alive unveils a vision for the next century of research, the math world takes note. That’s exactly what happened in 1900 at the International Congress of Mathematicians at Sorbonne University in Paris. Legendary mathematician David Hilbert presented 10 unsolved problems as ambitious guideposts for the 20th century. He later expanded his list to include 23 problems, and their influence on mathematical thought over the past 125 years cannot be overstated.Hilbert’s sixth problem was one of the loftiest. He called for “axiomatizing” physics, or determining the bare minimum of mathematical assumptions behind all its theories. Broadly construed, it’s not clear that mathematical physicists could ever know if they had resolved this challenge. Hilbert mentioned some specific subgoals, however, and researchers have since refined his vision into concrete steps toward its solution. In March mathematicians Yu Deng of the University of Chicago and Zaher Hani and Xiao Ma of the University of Michigan posted a new paper to the preprint server arXiv.org that claims to have cracked one of these goals. If their work withstands scrutiny, it will mark a major stride toward grounding physics in math and may open the door to analogous breakthroughs in other areas of physics. On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today. In the paper, the researchers suggest they have figured out how to unify three physical theories that explain the motion of fluids. These theories govern a range of engineering applications from aircraft design to weather prediction—but until now, they rested on assumptions that hadn’t been rigorously proven. This breakthrough won’t change the theories themselves, but it mathematically justifies them and strengthens our confidence that the equations work in the way we think they do.Each theory differs in how much it zooms in on a flowing liquid or gas. At the microscopic level, fluids are composed of particles—little billiard balls bopping around and occasionally colliding—and Newton’s laws of motion work well to describe their trajectories. But when you zoom out to consider the collective behavior of vast numbers of particles, the so-called mesoscopic level, it’s no longer convenient to model each one individually. In 1872 Austrian theoretical physicist Ludwig Boltzmann addressed this when he developed what became known as the Boltzmann equation. Instead of tracking the behavior of every particle, the equation considers the likely behavior of a typical particle. This statistical perspective smooths over the low-level details in favor of higher-level trends. The equation allows physicists to calculate how quantities such as momentum and thermal conductivity in the fluid evolve without painstakingly considering every microscopic collision.Zoom out further, and you find yourself in the macroscopic world. Here we view fluids not as a collection of discrete particles but as a single continuous substance. At this level of analysis, a different suite of equations—the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations—accurately describe how fluids move and how their physical properties interrelate without recourse to particles at all.The three levels of analysis each describe the same underlying reality—how fluids flow. In principle, each theory should build on the theory below it in the hierarchy: the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations at the macroscopic level should follow logically from the Boltzmann equation at the mesoscopic level, which in turn should follow logically from Newton’s laws of motion at the microscopic level. This is the kind of “axiomatization” that Hilbert called for in his sixth problem, and he explicitly referenced Boltzmann’s work on gases in his write-up of the problem. We expect complete theories of physics to follow mathematical rules that explain the phenomenon from the microscopic to the macroscopic levels. If scientists fail to bridge that gap, then it might suggest a misunderstanding in our existing theories.Unifying the three perspectives on fluid dynamics has posed a stubborn challenge for the field, but Deng, Hani and Ma may have just done it. Their achievement builds on decades of incremental progress. Prior advancements all came with some sort of asterisk, though; for example, the derivations involved only worked on short timescales, in a vacuum or under other simplifying conditions. The new proof broadly consists of three steps: derive the macroscopic theory from the mesoscopic one; derive the mesoscopic theory from the microscopic one; and then stitch them together in a single derivation of the macroscopic laws all the way from the microscopic ones. The first step was previously understood, and even Hilbert himself contributed to it. Deriving the mesoscopic from the microscopic, on the other hand, has been much more mathematically challenging. Remember, the mesoscopic setting is about the collective behavior of vast numbers of particles. So Deng, Hani and Ma looked at what happens to Newton’s equations as the number of individual particles colliding and ricocheting grows to infinity and their size shrinks to zero. They proved that when you stretch Newton’s equations to these extremes, the statistical behavior of the system—or the likely behavior of a “typical” particle in the fluid—converges to the solution of the Boltzmann equation. This step forms a bridge by deriving the mesoscopic math from the extremal behavior of the microscopic math. The major hurdle in this step concerned the length of time that the equations were modeling. It was already known how to derive the Boltzmann equation from Newton’s laws on very short timescales, but that doesn’t suffice for Hilbert’s program, because real-world fluids can flow for any stretch of time. With longer timescales comes more complexity: more collisions take place, and the whole history of a particle’s interactions might bear on its current behavior. The authors overcame this by doing careful accounting of just how much a particle’s history affects its present and leveraging new mathematical techniques to argue that the cumulative effects of prior collisions remain small.Gluing together their long-timescale breakthrough with previous work on deriving the Euler and Navier-Stokes equations from the Boltzmann equation unifies three theories of fluid dynamics. The finding justifies taking different perspectives on fluids based on what’s most useful in context because mathematically they converge on one ultimate theory describing one reality. Assuming that the proof is correct, it breaks new ground in Hilbert’s program. We can only hope that with just such fresh approaches, the dam will burst on Hilbert’s challenges and more physics will flow downstream.

Eternal Darkness' infamous sanity system patent has expired - so can anyone now copy it?
Eternal Darkness' infamous sanity system patent has expired - so can anyone now copy it? We asked a lawyer. Image credit: Nintendo News by Tom Phillips Editor-in-Chief Published on April 14, 2025 GameCube exclusive Eternal Darkness remains a cult classic among video game horror fans for its patented 'sanity system' - a series of paranoia-inducing effects meant to confuse the player and reflect your in-game character's spiralling psyche. While something of a gimmick, Eternal Darkness remains notorious today for the system - which included the game pulling stunts like pretending to crash or turn your TV off, or faking the deletion of your save file. Whether a marketing tactic or not, Nintendo of America filed a very real patent for the sanity system back in 2000, which finally expired in 2021. And every so often since then - particularly with the recent discussion around Warner Bros holding the patent for Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor's Nemesis system until 2036 - the matter has resurfaced. "It looks like the infamous patent on the sanity system from Eternal Darkness is now in the public domain," wrote reddit user DocMemory, shortly after the patent's time period ran out. "Let me just mention that I am not a lawyer and this should not constitute legal advice." But what if you did ask a lawyer, and did get legal advice? Could anyone now copy Eternal Darkness' sanity system and use those same sanity effects for themselves? I was intrigued. "You SHOULD be able to use whatever elements of an expired patent are necessary to its use (as described in the patent)," video game legal expert and creator of the Virtual Legality podcast Richard Hoeg told me. "But NOT anything that is not 'necessary' (graphics, perhaps some specific implementations - eg, sanity effects - as that's artistic expression rightly protected by copyright)." In other words, while you might be able to implement a similar version of Eternal Darkness' sanity system, directly copying elements from Eternal Darkness could prove more complicated. Nintendo of America's original patent describes a game system that incorporates a character's sanity level "that is affected by occurrences in the game such as encountering a game creature or gruesome situation". In short, the more bad stuff you see, the worse things get. But there are nuances - your character can rest or progress through an area more slowly to mitigate the sanity system's effects. "As the character's sanity level decreases, game play is effected such as by controlling game effects, audio effects, creating hallucinations and the like," the patent continues. "In this context, the same game can be played differently each time it is played." The patent goes on to detail a list of possible hallucinations that players may experience as a result of the sanity system, including: Wall carvings coming to life and reaching out for the character Something in wall or under floor moving by the character (Frighteners type of thing) Statue watching the character (Head tracking) Suit of armour moving (Relaxed to on guard stance) Static statue or object that appears to follow the character when they're not looking False doors that appear and disappear when the attempt to open is made Glowing eyes blinking in the darkness, yet when the area is illuminated they disappear Painting that shifts and changes along with its meaning Points of interest markers that the character's head will watch As well as a list of more physical effects that impact gameplay: Hallucination: lights go out, and a creature appears as lights come on, then the lights go back off, then the light comes back on and the creature is gone Stretching walls and corridors so they require more time to traverse Bleeding walls Enormous roar that emits from a tiny rodent (Mouse or rat) Dripping water from above, but when the character takes a second look it is now blood Shadows that appear to shift and change Character's torch mysteriously blows out, loud noise then it is once again lit Faint maniacal laughter (That gets louder and louder as the character draws deeper into insanity) Ambient audio, such as a water drip could become louder as insanity increases, so a really insane character will occasionally have this irritating dripping sound to distract him Lagging shadow (the character's shadow appears to follow the character) Eternal Darkness sadly never got a sequel, though attempts at crowdfunding a spiritual successor were made by some of the game's development team. Perhaps we should all just look forward to experiencing Eternal Darkness' sanity effects as they were originally programmed, if and when the game gets a fresh release via the Switch 2's Nintendo Switch Online GameCube catalogue.

TorontoShe was chatting with friends in a Lyft. Then someone texted her what they saidA Toronto woman is raising concerns about her privacy being breached after she received a text message transcript of her conversation with her roommates during a Lyft ride last month.Ride-sharing company says incident was not part of audio recording pilot it’s testing in some U.S. citiesNicole Brockbank · CBC News · Posted: Apr 14, 2025 4:00 AM EDT | Last Updated: April 14Anvi Ahuja received a text message transcript of her conversation with her roommates during their Lyft ride home on March 11. The company says it is investigating. (Nicole Brockbank/CBC)Social SharingAnvi Ahuja noticed a "freaky" new text message from a number she didn't know right after getting back to her downtown Toronto apartment last month. The text was a transcript of the conversation she'd just had with her roommates during their eight-minute Lyft ride home from a friend's place."I was like 'who is tapping me?'" Ahuja said. "The driver didn't inform us that we could be recorded."Within a few minutes she called the number the text came from and heard this looping, automated message: "We can't connect your call because your driver is not available right now.""It sounded like a pretty standard Lyft message, which raised a lot more questions," she said.Ahuja phoned Lyft that night looking for answers. In that initial call, she says a representative told her this was something the ride-sharing company was piloting. But then about a week later after following up with Lyft she received a written message from a member of the company's safety team which blamed the incident on the driver for recording her without her consent and said "proper actions" were taken against the driver. WATCH | Toronto woman explains concerns about 'freaky' text message: Ride-share recording incident leaves Toronto woman feeling 'stalked' 13 hours agoDuration 2:36A Toronto woman is speaking out, after a recent ride-share experience left her feeling uncomfortable, and unsafe. After the ride was over, she discovered her private conversation had been recorded. A transcript of the conversation was sent to her from an unknown number."These ride-sharing apps are big companies and people have a lot of sensitive conversations within cabs and they feel like they're secure," said Ahuja. "To know that nothing — even beyond our app experience — in the real world is secure anymore is really freaky and uncomfortable to me."Lyft says incident not part of U.S. pilot programThe company confirms the incident took place, but has offered varying explanations. After CBC Toronto contacted Lyft about this story last week, a Lyft representative called Ahuja. She says they told her the company is running a pilot program where audio is recorded from some rides and then the transcript is supposed to be sent to the ride-sharing company for reference if a security issue is reported. In a statement to CBC, a Lyft spokesperson acknowledged that the ride-sharing company has an in-app audio recording pilot in select U.S. markets with "strict opt-in protocols" but said this incident is not related to that pilot program or any other feature being tested by Lyft. "Safety is fundamental to Lyft, and we take reports like this very seriously and will investigate and take action for violations of our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy," said the statement."We can confirm that the communication was sent via a masked number, and the driver did not have access to the rider's personal phone number."Lyft's privacy policy says it works "with a third party to facilitate phone calls and text messages between riders and drivers without sharing either party's actual phone number with the other." And the company's recording device policy prohibits recording another person "without their express prior consent." The ride-sharing company wouldn't provide further details about the source of the transcript Ahuja received, but it appears the text could have come from the driver via a masked number from Lyft's third-party provider.Incident 'completely unacceptable' So how does Ahuja's experience jibe with Canadian privacy laws? A former privacy commissioner told CBC Toronto it doesn't. Former Ontario privacy commissioner Ann Cavoukian says this incident is 'completely unacceptable' and breaches Canada's federal privacy law. (Dave MacIntosh/CBC)"It is completely unacceptable," said Ann Cavoukian, who served as Ontario's privacy commissioner from 1997 to 2014."You're paying for a taxi-equivalent to take you somewhere, Lyft in this case. And of course, you assume that you're going to have conversations with the people in the car without it being taped and transcribed."In Canada, the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) lays out the ground rules for how businesses — including companies like Lyft — can collect, use or share personal information. The federal law requires companies to obtain informed consent before collecting, using and disclosing their customers' personal information, according to the interim director of privacy, technology and surveillance program at the Canadian Civil Liberties Association.Anaïs Bussières McNicoll is the interim director of the privacy, technology and surveillance program at the Canadian Civil Liberties Association. (Submitted by Anaïs Bussières McNicoll)"Passengers not only have to be notified that they're being recorded, they also need to be told for what specific purpose they're being recorded," said Anaïs Bussières McNicoll. "They would definitely need to obtain passengers' meaningful consent, informed consent, and that includes being specific about how the data is going to be collected, how it's going to be used, how long it's going to be retained, how it's going to be destroyed."That never happened for Ahuja, and is part of the reason she still has concerns about the incident even if it was a one-off with her driver."Some sort of recording software was used in the car — that in itself is a breach of my privacy," she said."Even if I'm one of the very few people that experienced this, I'm still concerned about what happens to our data and our privacy — which is a responsibility that Lyft has to its customers."ABOUT THE AUTHORNicole BrockbankReporter, CBC TorontoNicole Brockbank is a reporter for CBC Toronto's Enterprise Unit. Chinese marketplace DHgate becomes a top US app as trade war intensifies
The Trump trade war has gone viral on TikTok, pushing a Chinese e-commerce app, DHgate, to the top of the Apple App Store in the U.S. After Trump increased U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports by 145%, numerous Chinese suppliers and manufacturers began making TikTok videos explaining to consumers how the global luxury goods market actually works. The clothing, handbags, and other accessories that many people assumed were made in Europe originate from factories in China, these videos explained. As a result of the trend, the Chinese wholesale marketplace app DHgate surged to become the No. 3 top free iPhone app in the U.S. Apple App Store as of Monday morning. For comparison, the app was ranked No. 352 in the top non-game free iPhone apps category in the U.S. as of Friday, April 11, before jumping to No. 6 on Sunday and No. 3 on Monday, according to data from app intelligence provider Appfigures. On Monday, DHgate also climbed to No. 3 on the Top Overall chart for free iPhone apps, including games. The firm tells TechCrunch that on Saturday, April 12, the DHgate app was downloaded 35,400 times across the App Store and Google Play, a 56% increase from its 30-day average. The U.S. accounted for 17,300 of those installs, a jump of 98% over the 30-day average. On Sunday, April 13, those installs increased to 117,500 on iOS, up 732% from the 30-day average. The U.S. accounted for 65,100 of those downloads, up 940%. (Android download data for Sunday isn’t available yet.) Image Credits:Appfigures DHgate is a cross-border e-commerce company connecting both businesses and consumers to suppliers and manufacturers in China and other markets. Today, it offers an inventory of over 30 million products across categories like electronics, home and toys, shoes and apparel, jewelry, health and beauty, and more, its website states. The demand for the app grew out of the above-mentioned online viral trend where Chinese manufacturers began revealing their secrets to the American public. Following this trend, creators began telling their viewers that the DHgate app is a source for buying luxury goods before a brand has added its label to the product. @theycallherzoeyy #duet with @senbags2 the DHgate girlies been trying to tell us! 😩 #chinafashion #dhgate #desingerbags #luxurybag #chinatiktok #fyp #china ♬ original sound – user42213206167 In one popular TikTok video, a Chinese manufacturer claims that the majority of the world’s luxury bags are made in China, but the bags are then sent to the brands’ factories in Europe, where the label is added and the bag is repackaged. That way, the bags appear as though they’re “made in Italy” or “made in France,” the video’s creator claims. In another video, that same creator, @senbags2, says that a $38,000 Birkin bag is made for just around $1,400 and that consumers are just paying for the logo and fancy packaging. (The creator’s TikTok account has since been taken down, but numerous stitches and reuploads remain.) Videos from other Chinese creators focused on luxury categories like clothing and jewelry. Brands like Hermès, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and others were mentioned in the videos, as were midrange brands like Lululemon, Tommy Hilfiger, Lacoste, and Hugo Boss. The point of the videos is to stress that the U.S. is more dependent on China than it may realize, as even brands U.S. consumers thought were high-end European products are being manufactured in the country. It’s not all fast fashion and cheap electronics like those found on Shein or TikTok Shop. This is not news to anyone who understands the global supply chain, but the videos have prompted TikTok users to seek out a way to buy directly from goods manufacturers in China, leading them to DHgate and other apps that connect to the Chinese market. A similar app, Taobao, became the No. 10 overall free iPhone app on Monday. In reality, it can be difficult for consumers to tell which factories are the originals contracted by the luxury brands and which are just making copies, also known as dupes. However, online communities like r/DHgate on Reddit can sometimes offer help on that front. Image Credits:DHgate on the App Store Using DHgate is not really a solution for avoiding Trump’s tariffs, as any Chinese imports to the U.S. would still be impacted by tariffs outside of some exceptions in electronics — for now. But as one TikTok commenter pointed out, these trends are the result of the U.S. claiming to hold all the cards in the trade war, leading China to respond, “We make all the cards.”
