Huawei’s AI hardware breakthrough challenges Nvidia’s dominance
Chinese tech giant Huawei has made a bold move that could potentially change who leads the global AI chip race. The company has unveiled a powerful new computing system called the CloudMatrix 384 Supernode that, according to local media reports, performs better than similar technology from American chip leader Nvidia. If the performance claims prove accurate, the AI hardware breakthrough might reshape the technology landscape at a time when AI development is continuing worldwide, and despite US efforts to limit China’s access to advanced technology. 300 petaflops: Challenging Nvidia’s hardware dominance The CloudMatrix 384 Supernode is described as a “nuclear-level product,” according to reports from STAR Market Daily cited by the South China Morning Post (SCMP). The hardware achieves an impressive 300 petaflops of computing power, in excess of the 180 petaflops delivered by Nvidia’s NVL72 system. The CloudMatrix 384 Supernode was specifically engineered to address the computing bottlenecks that have become increasingly problematic as artificial intelligence models continue to grow in size and complexity. The system is designed to compete directly with Nvidia’s offerings, which have dominated the global market for AI accelerator hardware thus far. Huawei’s CloudMatrix infrastructure was first unveiled in September 2024, and was developed specifically to meet surging demand in China’s domestic market. The 384 Supernode variant represents the most powerful implementation of AI architecture to date, with reports indicating it can achieve a throughput of 1,920 tokens per second and maintain high levels of accuracy, reportedly matching the performance of Nvidia’s H100 chips, but using Chinese-made components instead. Developing under sanctions: The technical achievement What makes the AI hardware breakthrough particularly significant is that it has been achieved despite the severe technological restrictions Huawei has faced since being placed on the US Entity List. Sanctions have limited the company’s access to advanced US semiconductor technology and design software, forcing Huawei to develop alternative approaches and rely on domestic supply chains. The core technological advancement enabling the CloudMatrix 384’s performance appears to be Huawei’s answer to Nvidia’s NVLink – a high-speed interconnect technology that allows multiple GPUs to communicate efficiently. Nvidia’s NVL72 system, released in March 2024, features a 72-GPU NVLink domain that functions as a single, powerful GPU, enabling real-time inference for trillion-parameter models at speeds 30 times faster than previous generations. According to reporting from the SCMP, Huawei is collaborating with Chinese AI infrastructure startup SiliconFlow to implement the CloudMatrix 384 Supernode in supporting DeepSeek-R1, a reasoning model from Hangzhou-based DeepSeek. Supernodes are AI infrastructure architectures equipped with more resources than standard systems – including enhanced central processing units, neural processing units, network bandwidth, storage, and memory. The configuration allows them to function as relay servers, enhancing the overall computing performance of clusters and significantly accelerating the training of foundational AI models. Beyond Huawei: China’s broader AI infrastructure push The AI hardware breakthrough from Huawei doesn’t exist in isolation but rather represents part of a broader push by Chinese technology companies to build domestic AI computing infrastructure. In February, e-commerce giant Alibaba Group announced a massive 380 billion yuan ($52.4 billion) investment in computing resources and AI infrastructure over three years – the largest-ever investment by a private Chinese company in a computing project. For the global AI community, the emergence of viable alternatives to Nvidia’s hardware could eventually address the computing bottlenecks that have limited AI advancement. Competition in this space could potentially increase available computing capacity and provide developers with more options for training and deploying their models. However, it’s worth noting that as of the report’s publication, Huawei had not yet responded to requests for comment on these claims. As tensions between the US and China continue to intensify in the technology sector, Huawei’s CloudMatrix 384 Supernode represents a significant development in China’s pursuit of technological self-sufficiency. If the performance claims are verified, this AI hardware breakthrough would mean Huawei has achieved computing independence in this niche, despite facing extensive sanctions. The development also signals a broader trend in China’s technology sector, with multiple domestic companies intensifying their investments in AI infrastructure to capitalise on growing demand and promote the adoption of homegrown chips. The collective effort suggests China is committed to developing domestic alternatives to American technology in this strategically important field.. Cronos: The New Dawn is brutal pandemic horror: ‘Hard mode, in the old-school way’
The new gameplay trailer for Cronos: The New Dawn, out Wednesday from Bloober Team, debuts some tense gameplay featuring the protagonist — a time traveler with futuristic armor and an arsenal of weapons — facing off against misshapen, humanlike enemies with oozing, wiggling tendrils emerging from various parts of their bodies. I got to see even more at the Game Developers Conference in March, where I sat down with Jacek Zięba and Wojciech Piejko, who are co-directing the game at Bloober Team. And I can tell you one thing for sure: This game looks hard.I didn’t play Cronos myself; the preview was hands-off, so instead I was treated to watching Zięba play through a section of the game as his colleague Piejko told me about its time travel premise. The time-hopping happens across (at least) two distinct time periods — there’s the present time period wracked by a horrific, mutating pandemic that’s transformed many humans into monstrous beings, and then there’s the before times, when the pandemic was just starting up and people didn’t understand how bad it was going to get. The developers were purposefully vague about the rest of the story, though, citing their desire to avoid spoilers in response to almost all of my questions about it; they want players to experience the sci-fi narrative on their own when the game is ready. (Cronos does not yet have a firm release date, only a 2025 release window.)Throughout the play session, Zięba kept swearing under his breath, defeating difficult enemy after difficult enemy by the skin of his teeth. For your reference, readers, usually game developers are so good at the game they’re making that it’s a cakewalk for them to play, whether a reporter is observing them or not. But Cronos is purposefully tuned to be a difficult survival experience, and the developers want to keep it that way.Image: Bloober TeamImage: Bloober TeamImage: Bloober TeamImage: Bloober TeamWhen I asked them about an easy mode, both developers shook their heads and Zięba said, “It’s hard mode, in the old-school way.” “So there’s just the one mode?” I asked. “One mode,” he confirmed. “When you finish the game, we can unlock harder difficulty.”Naturally, FromSoftware’s games came up as a point of comparison during our conversation, but Zięba and Piejko told me Cronos is a lot more story-forward than those games; I didn’t get to see much of this in the gameplay-focused preview, but they explained the game has cutscenes and audio logs to listen to that will reveal more about its world. The developers also cited Resident Evil and Returnal as influences, as well as the Netflix show Dark and the movie 12 Monkeys — both time travel stories. When Zięba and Piejko pointed out the game’s setting — Poland, which is also where the devs are from — I asked if there were any historical events that players might want to know about if they aren’t already familiar with the country’s history. “We set it at the beginning of 1980 for various reasons,” said Zięba. In the early ’80s, the country was under martial law, and the same is true in the alt-history 1980s of Cronos — albeit not for the same reason. In Cronos, martial law is enacted “because there is a disease,” Zięba explained, “and the government [is] saying, No, it’s all right, everything is all right, just be at home, it’s cool, it’s OK.” But when the time-traveling protagonist goes back in time to before the pandemic went widespread — “a couple days before everything goes to shit,” as Zięba put it — they’ll learn more about what happened and why.Image: Bloober TeamBut again, in order to see that story, players will need to be very methodical and strategic while playing Cronos. One point of order came up in the newest trailer, which features this ominous sentence splashed across the screen: “Don’t let them merge.” That was also the number one tip that both developers told me to keep in mind when facing the game’s enemies. Basically, these creatures can merge together to create larger and more powerful versions of themselves, so if you see a monster approaching a nearby corpse lying on the ground, be very worried. The more they merge with each other, the more powerful the resultant creature is, and the more ammo it’s going to take to kill it — which is not good, because ammo is very, very scarce in this game.“The basic enemies, we call them doppelgangers,” explained Zięba. “They’re maybe made from two, three, four, five people — but they still think, I’m a person. So they look more human. But you can also fight with monsters that — they know they’re not a person. They look very different than these guys.”This “merge” mechanic was the first mechanic created for this game, and the entire game and story emerged from that concept. In the early days of the in-game pandemic, that was one of the first symptoms — “people starting to feel an urge to come together,” as Piejko put it. Eventually, that urge turned into the horrific merging that’s now on display in the apocalyptic timeline.Cronos: The New Dawn is not only a completely original IP, it’s also very specifically a single-player experience. “It’s how it should be,” declared Zięba. “I’m a bit tired by only live service stuff that, you know, try to catch me — not to engage me. [...] I think we are overtired — everybody, now — by live service stuff. And how we can carry the player, how we can — no! Just make a good game.”Bloober Team’s Cronos: The New Dawn is out in 2025 for PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.See More: Cronos: The New DawnPlaystationPlaystation logoWindowsWindows logoXboxXbox logoExplore The Game

Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition Has Been in Development for More Than Seven Weeks; The Witcher 3 Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrade May Not Be off the Table
Menu Home News Hardware Gaming Mobile Finance Deals Reviews How To Wccftech Gaming Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition Has Been in Development for More Than Seven Weeks; The Witcher 3 Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrade May Not Be off the Table Francesco De Meo • Apr 17, 2025 at 11:03am EDT Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition has been in development for Nintendo Switch 2 for longer than what has been assumed so far, according to a member of the development team. Speaking with Eurogamer, CD Projekt Red's gameplay technical design expert Filip Downar confirmed that the team has been working passionately on the Nintendo Switch 2 port of the game for more than seven weeks. Apparently, the misunderstanding arose because the build that has been showcased so far was finalized seven weeks before its first showing. While Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition is obviously the team's main focus, there's a slim chance that a Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt may not be off the table. When asked about it by Eurogamer, the CDPR gameplay technical design expert only reaffirmed the team's commitment to the Cyberpunk 2077 Switch 2 port, without outright denying the possibility. Considering how Geralt of Rivia's latest adventure is still one of the most impressive Switch ports ever released, it would be very interesting to see how the game could be improved using the additional power offered by the new Nintendo system and some of its advanced features, such as ray tracing support. Much like the aforementioned Nintendo Switch port of The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077 Ultimate Edition is looking to be one of the most impressive ports coming to Nintendo Switch 2 during its launch window, judging from the footage that has been shared so far. The game will launch on June 5th, the same day the system does, with the physical edition not requiring any additional download. Decades Later, Mario 64's Baby Penguin Is Still Doomed In Mario Kart World
Nintendo's Mario Kart World Direct presentation revealed tons of new details about the upcoming kart racer. However, among the many different scenes was a sneakily silly reference to an infamous moment in Mario history, and it all revolves around a little blue penguin.During the Free Roam section of the presentation--at around the 12:04 mark--we see the Penguin racer approaching a cliff and driving off of it, plummeting to the water below. The kart lands safely in the waves, and the little guy cheerfully drives away. This is a far more fortunate fate than old-school Mario fans anticipated back in 1996, when the baby penguin debuted in the Cool, Cool Mountain stage of Super Mario 64.One mission requires Mario to return the little penguin chick to its mother, which would earn Mario one of the game's 120 Power Stars. However, once the task was completed and the Star appeared, some players found they could still interact with the chick--only to promptly drop it off of the nearby cliff into the abyss, birthing a future internet meme in the process.Continue Reading at GameSpot

Doctor Who’s current lack of an iconic outfit democratizes cosplay, Russell T. Davies says
Polygon sat down with Ncuti Gatwa and Varada Sethu, the stars of Doctor Who’s latest season, recently by video chat, and when we asked for their favorite things they got to do while filming, there was one that they truly gushed about.  “I love the outfits,” Sethu said. “Honestly, I love the outfit reveals. […] The first time we come on set looking at each other in our outfits, I feel like we don’t know how to behave.”  “No, we don’t!” Gatwa exclaimed, as they both laughed.  “You look amazing! Look at that!” Sethu impersonated their on-set reactions. “[We were] screaming at each other, every single episode. I’d get excited for the first day of shooting with Ncuti for every episode, because I just can’t wait to see his outfit. I can’t wait to see how we look.”  On-set outfit reveals for every episode are a new thing for Doctor Who, a show in which the titular character usually has one iconic look to go along with whatever new actor is in the role. The most unique details of those looks — whether it’s a pinstripe suit with Converse kicks, a panama hat and question-mark cane, a ludicrously long scarf, or a particular striped-shirt-and-long-cardigan combo — become visual shorthand for that version of the Doctor among fans.  A clear change in costume has also become a way in which Who showrunners let the audience know that the hectic transitional adventure is over, and it’s time to find the show’s new rhythm. Often, after the Doctor regenerates — the restorative process that provides an in-fiction explanation for why the Doctor looks and acts pretty different now — the show will highlight the moment that the new Doctor changes out of the old Doctor’s clothes and selects a new regular look.  Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor, in contrast, seems to have a new, incredibly fashionable look in just about every episode — if not more than one! Which might make it difficult to pin down a fashion shorthand for his Fifteenth Doctor. But longtime Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies hopes that the new Doctor’s vibrant and ever-changing fashion (supplied by costume designer Pam Downe) will be a boon for cosplayers, especially casual ones.  “I do love opening the door for cosplayers,” Davies told Polygon. “In one episode in the first season he set out of the TARDIS in a pair of jeans and a duffle coat. And at the [finale], he was in a pair of Levi’s and a black leather jacket. And that means almost anyone can cosplay.”  Davies noted that cosplay can demand dedication, research, attention to detail — and often a lot of money, adding: “And if it’s your hobby, then that’s money well spent. […] But there’s also going to be that casual cosplayer, that kid who fancies being Doctor Who today. And that means now they can put on a pair of jeans and a duffle coat, run out the door or in the middle of the rain, and say, ‘I’m the Doctor.’ And I like that. “It democratizes it, it means no one has ownership. It means you can put on any costume and say, ‘I’m the Doctor today,’ because that’s what he’d do.”  Of course, Davies allowed that there will also be cosplayers who want to recreate every one of Gatwa’s outfits. “So that’s a greater delight for them as well. That’s a collector’s joy.”  As for what makes an outfit an outfit for this Doctor? “Really it’s all down to Ncuti. Whatever he wears looks magnificent.”

Grün Haus Balances Minimalism With Bold Color and Materials in Malta
Perched in the vibrant heart of Sliema, Malta, Grün Haus by studio NICHE. emerges as a serene home that deftly balances the demands of modern living with a commitment to timeless design. The project is a study in how architecture can evoke calm, invite connection, and adapt to the evolving needs of life. Balancing minimalism with bold furnishings and materials, the interior fosters a sense of sophisticated coziness that’s idea for a modern family. At its core, Grün Haus embodies a philosophy of quiet sophistication. Through a thoughtfully orchestrated palette of textures and tones, the space exudes a sense of tranquility and fluidity. A continuous sweep of custom-crafted oak joinery links rooms with subtle cohesion, wrapping bespoke cabinetry and kitchen elements in a unified architectural skin. Every junction is considered, every handle concealed, allowing the language of the materials to speak for themselves. Rather than prioritizing traditional compartmentalized layouts, the residence champions flexibility. Its modular approach to spatial design enables rooms to shift in purpose, responding intuitively to the needs of its occupants. Elements such as the dual-aspect breakfast bench and a two-sided sofa introduce layers of interaction, offering opportunities for both solitude and shared moments without sacrificing flow. Light plays a pivotal role in defining the home’s character. A sleek linear lighting system runs like a spine through the interior, not only guiding movement but also acting as a quiet cue that draws attention outward, toward sweeping vistas of Malta. Daylight is harnessed with deliberate intention – reflected off warm microcement floors and diffused through strategically placed surfaces – to cultivate a luminous ambiance throughout the day. Texture becomes both a functional and expressive tool. Vertical fluting on structural elements introduces depth and tactility, while sculptural seating doubles as expressive art, blurring the boundaries between utility and visual interest. In a space defined by restraint, these textural nuances work in conjunction to elevate the residence. Sustainability is deeply woven into the fabric of the design. Passive cooling strategies, coupled with cross-ventilation and an abundance of natural illumination, ensure minimal energy reliance. Material choices – ranging from resilient woods to low-impact finishes – reflect a commitment to longevity, while integrated greenery breathes vitality into the interiors, reinforcing a strong biophilic connection. Perhaps most striking is how the home frames and enhances its surroundings. A bold recessed feature in the ceiling acts as a compass, subtly drawing the gaze outward and anchoring the interiors within the broader landscape. This gesture, though quiet, encapsulates the ethos of the entire project: design that guides, connects, and elevates. For more information on studio NICHE., visit studioniche.online.
