WWW.MARKTECHPOST.COMTransformers Can Now Predict Spreadsheet Cells without Fine-Tuning: Researchers Introduce TabPFN Trained on 100 Million Synthetic DatasetsTabular data is widely utilized in various fields, including scientific research, finance, and healthcare. Traditionally, machine learning models such as gradient-boosted decision trees have been preferred for analyzing tabular data due to their effectiveness in handling heterogeneous and structured datasets. Despite their popularity, these methods have notable limitations, particularly in terms of performance on unseen data distributions, transferring learned knowledge between datasets, and integration challenges with neural network-based models because of their non-differentiable nature. Researchers from the University of Freiburg, Berlin Institute of Health, Prior Labs, and ELLIS Institute have introduced a novel approach named Tabular Prior-data Fitted Network (TabPFN). TabPFN leverages transformer architectures to address common limitations associated with traditional tabular data methods. The model significantly surpasses gradient-boosted decision trees in both classification and regression tasks, especially on datasets with fewer than 10,000 samples. Notably, TabPFN demonstrates remarkable efficiency, achieving better results in just a few seconds compared to several hours of extensive hyperparameter tuning required by ensemble-based tree models. TabPFN utilizes in-context learning (ICL), a technique initially introduced by large language models, where the model learns to solve tasks based on contextual examples provided during inference. The researchers adapted this concept specifically for tabular data by pre-training TabPFN on millions of synthetically generated datasets. This training method allows the model to implicitly learn a broad spectrum of predictive algorithms, reducing the need for extensive dataset-specific training. Unlike traditional deep learning models, TabPFN processes entire datasets simultaneously during a single forward pass through the network, which enhances computational efficiency substantially. The architecture of TabPFN is specifically designed for tabular data, employing a two-dimensional attention mechanism tailored to effectively utilize the inherent structure of tables. This mechanism allows each data cell to interact with others across rows and columns, effectively managing different data types and conditions such as categorical variables, missing data, and outliers. Furthermore, TabPFN optimizes computational efficiency by caching intermediate representations from the training set, significantly accelerating inference on subsequent test samples. Empirical evaluations highlight TabPFN’s substantial improvements over established models. Across various benchmark datasets, including the AutoML Benchmark and OpenML-CTR23, TabPFN consistently achieves higher performance than widely used models like XGBoost, CatBoost, and LightGBM. For classification problems, TabPFN showed notable gains in normalized ROC AUC scores relative to extensively tuned baseline methods. Similarly, in regression contexts, it outperformed these established approaches, showcasing improved normalized RMSE scores. TabPFN’s robustness was also extensively evaluated across datasets characterized by challenging conditions, such as numerous irrelevant features, outliers, and substantial missing data. In contrast to typical neural network models, TabPFN maintained consistent and stable performance under these challenging scenarios, demonstrating its suitability for practical, real-world applications. Beyond its predictive strengths, TabPFN also exhibits fundamental capabilities typical of foundation models. It effectively generates realistic synthetic tabular datasets and accurately estimates probability distributions of individual data points, making it suitable for tasks such as anomaly detection and data augmentation. Additionally, the embeddings produced by TabPFN are meaningful and reusable, providing practical value for downstream tasks including clustering and imputation. In summary, the development of TabPFN signifies an important advancement in modeling tabular data. By integrating the strengths of transformer-based models with the practical requirements of structured data analysis, TabPFN offers enhanced accuracy, computational efficiency, and robustness, potentially facilitating substantial improvements across various scientific and business domains. TOWARDSAI.NETImproving Zero-Shot Quality with Verb InjectionLatest Machine Learning Improving Zero-Shot Quality with Verb Injection 1 like April 15, 2025 Share this post Last Updated on April 15, 2025 by Editorial Team Author(s): Mikhail Simin Originally published on Towards AI. Teaching Language Models Complex New Verbs Fine-tuning large language models (LLMs) has become the default method for tailoring AI systems to specific tasks, yet it often comes with significant drawbacks: high computational costs, brittleness from overfitting, catastrophic forgetting, and substantial data preparation hurdles. These challenges limit the practical usability of traditional fine-tuning, especially for teams seeking efficient, adaptable solutions. To address this gap, I’ve explored an alternative method called “Verb Injection,” which empowers you to teach LLMs entirely new, complex verbs with minimal examples, resulting in powerful zero-shot performance without the typical fine-tuning headaches. By the way, Azure provides over three dozen LLM models easily accessible through their Playground or GitHub Marketplace. I’ve spent a lot of time exploring various ways to bend a model to my will, and I’ve noticed something interesting: while these models are extremely versatile, there’s not much discussion around teaching them entirely new words, specifically verbs with specific & complex behaviors. The original goal I’ve set out is answering the question, “How can I use fewer tokens for instructions on complex data manipulation?” So here I want to share the concept of “Verb Injection”: a method to teach a model a new English word that is a complex verb — using only a… Read the full blog for free on Medium. The game itself? Well, it was an incredibly stylish arcade racer with ludicrously exaggerated drift mechanics, a "car-PG-lite" GP mode, and a banger soundtrack. Sadly, it was massively overshadowed by the original Gran Turismo, but it's well worth a low-cost look on the PlayStation Store today. However, by taking that modern digital route, you'll be missing out on two novel ways to play, as Ridge Racer Type 4 was at its best when controlled by either the NeGcon or JogCon controllers (which I eBayed for retrospective testing purposes). The former peripheral has you twisting its two halves and provides a remarkably precise cornering experience. I rated the JogCon higher with its pretty rad force feedback, which delivers the tug of torque steering, collisions, and turning feedback through its central dial. WWW.DENOFGEEK.COMDaredevil: Born Again’s Successful First Season Is a Good Sign for the MCUThis post contains spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again season 1. The devil is in the details. That’s what Marvel realized in October of 2023, when the writer’s strike forced them to pause their long-in-development revival series Daredevil: Born Again. Although six of the planned 18 episodes had been completed, Marvel let go of writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman and brought on new showrunner Dario Scardapane and directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead for a creative overhaul. To be sure, the finished product shows its seams. The transition from what was originally intended as a more traditional courtroom drama to a crowd-pleaser superhero show has resulted in awkward pacing, tonal shifts, and the usual issues with bad special effects. And yet, Daredevil: Born Again is a triumph, a show that captures everything that once made the MCU such a phenomenon: charismatic actors, stand-up-and-cheer moments, and fun set-pieces. The success of Daredevil: Born Again is great news for not just the Man Without Fear, but for the MCU in general, which is hoping for its own resurrection. Down to the Abyss “I am Marvel Jesus!” That typically edgy line from Deadpool & Wolverine seemed to come true, at least for a while. Marvel’s sole movie release in 2024, Deadpool & Wolverine sliced up $1.338 billion at the box office, overcoming (or perhaps relying upon) an R-rating and recycled characters to become the second highest grossing movie of the year. Yet, nearly a year later, that momentum has slowed. Once again, the MCU feels like it’s returned to its post-Avengers: Endgame status quo, running on fumes and lacking direction. The high points of the past five years — WandaVision, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, X-Men ’97 — get buried under middling entries such as Thor: Love & Thunder, Echo, and Captain America: Brave New World. Even the continuing excitement for The Fantastic Four: First Steps feels like it has to potentially overcome next month’s Thunderbolts*. Along the way, Marvel’s had to retool several times, undermining the image of Kevin Feige as a master planner, a key part of his appeal. Beyond the problems posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and the writers and actors strikes, there are strange decisions such as holding a Black Widow movie until after the character’s death in Avengers: Endgame and the entire debacle surrounding intended big bad Kang. In short, Marvel’s fallen far from its once-high status. And its attempts at retooling don’t exactly fill us all with excitement. First, Marvel Studios separated into three branches, with separate divisions for Marvel Television and Marvel Animation. Second, Feige turned to big names from the MCU’s heyday, bringing back Robert Downey Jr., this time as iconic villain and Kang-replacement Doctor Doom, and the Russo Brothers to direct. Honestly, from the outside, these changes seem superficial at best, more shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic than rediscovering a sense of direction. But then came Daredevil: Born Again. Join our mailing list Get the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox! Reborn in Flames Within 15 minutes of Daredevil: Born Again, Foggy Nelson has died, and viewers couldn’t be happier. Okay, no, no one’s excited about the fact that Matt Murdock’s best friend, played so affably by Elden Henson, gets killed right away in the first episode. But even his being on screen is a win, given the original plan for the series. Under the initial concept, Foggy and Karen (Deborah Ann Woll) would never have appeared at all in the show. Whether they would have been killed or simply have left Matt’s life is unclear, as Wilson Bethel, who plays Foggy’s killer Bullseye, wasn’t slated to return either. In fact, only Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio would come back from the Netflix series, with even Ayelet Zurer replaced by Sandrine Holt as Vanessa for the new series. On one hand, bringing back fan favorites like Henson, Woll, and Zurer seems like the same type of pandering that gave Spider-Man: No Way Home and Deadpool & Wolverine a short term burst of excitement, fun in the moment but unsustainable. Daredevil: Born Again uses its returning characters in the exact opposite way. Getting to spend even ten minutes with Foggy at the opening of the show, seeing Matt happy with Karen and watching the three of them celebrate their meager victory together isn’t just a reminder of a better show that we used to like. It’s a genuine character moment that informs Matt’s loss throughout the rest of the season. Even losing Karen, who makes only intermittent appearances until returning to Matt’s life in the finale, haunts Matt and makes his reluctance to become Daredevil again feel real. Inserting Zurer’s Vanessa into the show sometimes results in choppy editing and composing, as certain scenes were clearly shot with Holt interacting with D’Onofrio and Margarita Levieva, who plays the Fisks’ marriage counselor and Matt’s new love interest Heather Glenn. However, the emotional payoff of seeing Vanessa grow distant from Fisk, and then finally return to him in the finale, works better because it’s a face we’ve seen before as the object of Wilson’s affection. In short, Daredevil: Born Again still bears the marks of reshoots, shoddy compositing, and unconvincing CGI. But because it puts the focus on the characters and themes, we viewers forgive the technical shortcomings and thrill to the story. Salvation Through the Devil Midway through the penultimate episode of Born Again‘s first season, Matt Murdock visits Bullseye in prison. Matt comes in all righteous fury, deflecting Bullseye’s attempts to needle him with acknowledgments of respect. That is until Bullseye points out that there’s a scenario in which Matt would be defending him in court. “Because that’s what good men do,” Bullseye sneers. “Defend their enemies in court.” The line hits the target, forcing Matt to freeze, just one more reminder that he can’t be a good man, at least not through the legal system. It’s a great character moment, one that underscores Matt’s moral quandary and larger loss of faith in the law. However, it has little to do the plotlines that made up the middle of the first season, stories about White Tiger, Fisk’s bayside renovation projects, or Heather’s mistrust of vigilantes. One could argue that the scene is distracting, ruining the season’s overall coherence. But we don’t, because the scene works. And it works because of its character work, because we’re compelled by who Matt is as a person, by Cox and Bethel’s performances. To be certain, a lot of the upcoming Marvel projects will have similar bumps. That’s most true of Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, both of which are currently undergoing major overhauls, but also of much-anticipated The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which had to respond with the rest of Marvel to changes in the Kang storyline. But if they can follow Daredevil‘s lead and give us interesting characters, compelling themes, and great acting, we won’t care about the lingering problems in the production. If they can follow Daredevil‘s lead, the MCU can be truly born again. Daredevil: Born Again season 1 is now streaming on Disney+.0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 12 Views

FUTURISM.COMZuckerberg Encourages Theatergoers to Use Their Phones While Movie Is PlayingUncontent with merely turning Facebook and Instagram into right-wing hellscapes of AI slop, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is now actively rallying theatergoers to pull out their glowingly annoying smartphones when they're at the movies. As Variety reports, Meta is teaming up with the horror film studio Blumhouse to bring the "second screen" experience to its single-night re-release of "M3GAN" on April 30.Dubbed "Halfway to Halloween," the production company's limited engagement will also include "Annabelle" and "Ma," two of its other big hits — but it's clear that "M3GAN," with its hotly anticipated upcoming sequel, is the star of the show.Using chatbot technology that Meta refers to as "Movie Mate" — a new spin, perhaps, on Zuckerberg's cringey push to get his subordinates to refer to each other as "Meta Mates" back when he was all-in on virtual reality — fans will be able to talk to an AI version of the iconic robot. There is, however, a catch."Movie Mate is only available to moviegoers who are in a theater," the studio explained in a statement provided to Variety, "and works by DM'ing the Instagram account @M3GAN account to start the experience."When we asked Meta how this location-specific gambit works, a company spokesperson told Futurism that a "code will be displayed on the movie screen prior to the trailers" to verify that users are in the theater, and they would subsequently be provided with instructions on how to initiate the DM convo. Though that's better than using some sort of creepy geofencing, it also sounds like it requires a non-minimal amount of effort — which equals, of course, more light pollution inside dark theaters packed with patrons for the single-night screenings.Beyond the "M3GAN" chatbot, the promotion will also include more traditional marketing incentives like "sneak peeks, exclusive recorded messages from directors and talent from the films, and surprise special appearances in select markets," Blumhouse said in its statement.Amid this desperate attempt to make Meta relevant post-Metaverse, many folks are not thrilled at the thought of studios intentionally and actively encouraging people to ruin the movie theater experience."I feel like M3GAN would actually kill moviegoers who used [Movie Mate]," one Bluesky user quipped."It's feeling like we've lost the fight on this one," Bloody Disgusting editor-in-chief John Squires tweeted, "and the next generation of the theater-going experience will be tailored to the youth and the way they consume movies, which is very different than the way most of us do.""Hollywood will likely lean in," he continued. "And maybe they have to."In response to the news, the Alamo Drafthouse theater chain confirmed to Variety that it won't be participating in the monstrous "Movie Mate" campaign — though, to be fair, that decision could be an attempt to gain back goodwill from pro-labor cinephiles who boycotted during a recently-ended strike protesting layoffs.Though Meta is far from the first company to attempt this kind of ghoulish "second screen marketing," bringing it to theaters — and to a single-night engagement in particular — is indeed horrific.Share This Article0 Commentarios 0 Acciones 25 Views

Tesla accused of hacking odometers to weasel out of warranty repairs (permalink) A lawsuit filed in February accuses Tesla of remotely altering odometer values on failure-prone cars, in a bid to push these lemons beyond the 50,000 mile warranty limit: https://www.thestreet.com/automotive/tesla-accused-of-using-sneaky-tactic-to-dodge-car-repairs The suit was filed by a California driver who bought a used Tesla with 36,772 miles on it. The car's suspension kept failing, necessitating multiple servicings, and that was when the plaintiff noticed that the odometer readings for his identical daily drive were going up by ever-larger increments. This wasn't exactly subtle: he was driving 20 miles per day, but the odometer was clocking 72.35 miles/day. Still, how many of us monitor our daily odometer readings? In short order, his car's odometer had rolled over the 50k mark and Tesla informed him that they would no longer perform warranty service on his lemon. Right after this happened, the new mileage clocked by his odometer returned to normal. This isn't the only Tesla owner who's noticed this behavior: Tesla subreddits are full of similar complaints: https://www.reddit.com/r/RealTesla/comments/1ca92nk/is_tesla_inflating_odometer_to_show_more_range/ This isn't Tesla's first dieselgate scandal. In the summer of 2023, the company was caught lying to drivers about its cars' range: https://pluralistic.net/2023/07/28/edison-not-tesla/#demon-haunted-world Drivers noticed that they were getting far fewer miles out of their batteries than Tesla had advertised. Naturally, they contacted the company for service on their faulty cars. Tesla then set up an entire fake service operation in Nevada that these calls would be diverted to, called the "diversion team." Drivers with range complaints were put through to the "diverters" who would claim to run "remote diagnostics" on their cars and then assure them the cars were fine. They even installed a special xylophone in the diversion team office that diverters would ring every time they successfully deceived a driver. These customers were then put in an invisible Tesla service jail. Their Tesla apps were silently altered so that they could no longer book service for their cars for any reason – instead, they'd have to leave a message and wait several days for a callback. The diversion center racked up 2,000 calls/week and diverters were under strict instructions to keep calls under five minutes. Eventually, these diverters were told that they should stop actually performing remote diagnostics on the cars of callers – instead, they'd just pretend to have run the diagnostics and claim no problems were found (so if your car had a potentially dangerous fault, they would falsely claim that it was safe to drive). Most modern cars have some kind of internet connection, but Tesla goes much further. By design, its cars receive "over-the-air" updates, including updates that are adverse to drivers' interests. For example, if you stop paying the monthly subscription fee that entitles you to use your battery's whole charge, Tesla will send a wireless internet command to your car to restrict your driving to only half of your battery's charge. This means that your Tesla is designed to follow instructions that you don't want it to follow, and, by design, those instructions can fundamentally alter your car's operating characteristics. For example, if you miss a payment on your Tesla, it can lock its doors and immobilize itself, then, when the repo man arrives, it will honk its horn, flash its lights, back out of its parking spot, and unlock itself so that it can be driven away: https://tiremeetsroad.com/2021/03/18/tesla-allegedly-remotely-unlocks-model-3-owners-car-uses-smart-summon-to-help-repo-agent/ Some of the ways that your Tesla can be wirelessly downgraded (like disabling your battery) are disclosed at the time of purchase. Others (like locking you out and summoning a repo man) are secret. But whether disclosed or secret, both kinds of downgrade depend on the genuinely bizarre idea that a computer that you own, that is in your possession, can be relied upon to follow orders from the internet even when you don't want it to. This is weird enough when we're talking about a set-top box that won't let you record a TV show – but when we're talking about a computer that you put your body into and race down the road at 80mph inside of, it's frankly terrifying. Obviously, most people would prefer to have the final say over how their computers work. I mean, maybe you trust the manufacturer's instructions and give your computer blanket permission to obey them, but if the manufacturer (or a hacker pretending to be the manufacturer, or a government who is issuing orders to the manufacturer) starts to do things that are harmful to you (or just piss you off), you want to be able to say to your computer, "OK, from now on, you take orders from me, not them." In a state of nature, this is how computers work. To make a computer ignore its owner in favor of internet randos, the manufacturer has to build in a bunch of software countermeasures to stop you from reconfiguring or installing software of your choosing on it. And sure, that software might be able to withstand the attempts of normies like you and me to bypass it, but given that we'd all rather have the final say over how our computers work, someone is gonna figure out how to get around that software. I mean, show me a 10-foot fence and I'll show you an 11-foot ladder, right? To stop that from happening, Congress passed the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Despite the word "copyright" appearing in the name of the law, it's not really about defending copyright, it's about defending business models. Under Section 1201 of the DMCA, helping someone bypass a software lock is a felony punishable by a five-year prison sentence and a $500,000 fine (for a first offense). That's true whether or not any copyright infringement takes place. So if you want to modify your Tesla – say, to prevent the company from cheating your odometer – you have to get around a software lock, and that's a felony. Indeed, if any manufacturer puts a software lock on its product, then any changes that require disabling or bypassing that lock become illegal. That's why you can't just buy reliable third-party printer ink – reverse-engineering the "is this an original HP ink cartridge?" program is a literal crime, even though using non-HP ink in your printer is absolutely not a copyright violation. Jay Freeman calls this effect "felony contempt of business model." Thus we arrive at this juncture, where every time you use a product or device or service, it might behave in a way that is totally unlike the last time you used it. This is true whether you own, lease or merely interact with a product. The changes can be obvious, or they can be subtle to the point of invisibility. And while manufacturers can confine their "updates" to things that make the product better (for example, patching security vulnerabilities), there's nothing to stop them from using this uninspectable, non-countermandable veto over your devices' functionality to do things that harm you – like fucking with your odometer. Or, you know, bricking your car. The defunct EV maker Fisker – who boasted that it made "software-based cars" – went bankrupt last year and bricked the entire fleet of unsold cars: https://pluralistic.net/2024/10/10/software-based-car/#based I call this ability to modify the underlying functionality of a product or service for every user, every time they use it, "twiddling," and it's a major contributor to enshittification: https://pluralistic.net/2023/02/19/twiddler/ Enshittification's observable symptoms follow a predictable pattern: first, a company makes things good for its users, while finding ways to lock them in. Then, once it knows the users can't easily leave, the company makes things worse for end-users in order to deliver value to business customers. Once these businesses are locked in, the company siphons value away from them, too, until the product or service is a pile of shit, that we still can't leave: https://pluralistic.net/2025/02/26/ursula-franklin/#franklinite Twiddling is key to enshittification: it's the method by which value is shifted from end-users to business customers, and from business customers to the platform. Twiddling is the "switch" in enshittification's series of minute, continuous bait-and-switches. The fact that DMCA 1201 makes it a crime to investigate systems with digital locks makes the modern computerized device a twiddler's playground. Sure, a driver might claim that their odometer is showing bad readings, but they can't dump their car's software and identify the code that is changing the odometer. This is what I mean by "demon-haunted computers": a computer is "demon-haunted" if it is designed to detect when it is under scrutiny, and, when it senses a hostile observer, it changes its behavior to the innocuous, publicly claimed factory defaults: https://pluralistic.net/2024/01/18/descartes-delenda-est/#self-destruct-sequence-initiated But as soon as the observer goes away, the computer returns to its nefarious ways. This is exactly what happened with Dieselgate, when VW used software that detected the test-suite run by government emissions inspectors, and changed the engine's characteristics when it was under their observation. But once the car was back on the road, it once again began emitting toxic gas at levels that killed killed dozens of people and sickened thousands more: https://www.nytimes.com/2015/09/29/upshot/how-many-deaths-did-volkswagens-deception-cause-in-us.html Cars are among the most demon-haunted products we use on a daily basis. They are designed from the chassis up to do things that are harmful to their owners, from stealing our location data so it can be sold to data-brokers, to immobilizing themselves if you miss a payment, to downgrading themselves if you stop paying for a "subscription," to ratting out your driving habits to your insurer: https://pluralistic.net/2023/07/24/rent-to-pwn/#kitt-is-a-demon These are the "legitimate" ways that cars are computers that ignore their owners' orders in favor of instructions they get from the internet. But once a manufacturer arrogates that power to itself, it is confronted with a tempting smorgasbord of enshittificatory gambits to defraud you, control you, and gaslight you. Now, perhaps you could wield this power wisely, because you are in possession of the normal human ration of moral consideration for others, to say nothing of a sense of shame and a sense of honor. But while corporations are (legally) people, they are decidedly not human. They are artificial lifeforms, "intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic" (as HG Wells said of the marauding aliens in War of the Worlds): https://pluralistic.net/2025/04/14/timmy-share/#a-superior-moral-justification-for-selfishness These alien invaders are busily xenoforming the planet, rendering it unfit for human habitation. Laws that ban reverse-engineering are a devastating weapon that corporations get to use in their bid to subjugate and devour the human race. The US isn't the only country with a law like Section 1201 of the DMCA. Over the past 25 years, the US Trade Representative has arm-twisted nearly every country in the world into passing laws that are nearly identical to America's own disastrous DMCA. Why did countries agree to pass these laws? Well, because they had to, or the US would impose tariffs on them: https://pluralistic.net/2025/03/03/friedmanite/#oil-crisis-two-point-oh The Trump tariffs change everything, including this thing. There is no reason for America's (former) trading partners to continue to enforce the laws it passed to protect Big Tech's right to twiddle their citizens. That goes double for Tesla: rather than merely complaining about Musk's Nazi salutes, countries targeted by the regime he serves could retaliate against him, in a devastating fashion. By abolishing their anticircuvmention laws, countries around the world would legalize jailbreaking Teslas, allowing mechanics to unlock all the subscription features and software upgrades for every Tesla driver, as well as offering their own software mods. Not only would this tank Tesla stock and force Musk to pay back the loans he collateralized with his shares (loans he used to buy Twitter and the US predidency), it would also abolish sleazy gimmicks like hacking drivers' odometers to get out of paying for warranty service: https://pluralistic.net/2025/03/08/turnabout/#is-fair-play (Image: Steve Jurvetson, CC BY 2.0, modified) Hey look at this (permalink) OpenAI Is A Systemic Risk To The Tech Industry https://www.wheresyoured.at/openai-is-a-systemic-risk-to-the-tech-industry-2/ Save Social https://savesocial.eu/en/ (h/t Chris Kalk) The rise of end times fascism https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-interactive/2025/apr/13/end-times-fascism-far-right-trump-musk (h/t Roz Doctorow) Object permanence (permalink) #20yrsago WIPO’s $50 million bribery scandal https://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/16/world/europe/swiss-investigates-possibility-of-bribery-in-un-contract.html #20yrsago Updating websites from prison by paper mail https://web.archive.org/web/20050419003402/http://beta.news.yahoo.com/s/cpress/20050416/ca_pr_on_tc/us_internet_inmates/nc:737 #15yrsago Sign for the US Border: unprovoked beatings ahead https://web.archive.org/web/20120426212453/https://i44.tinypic.com/2dv77f8.jpg #15yrsago Every comic is funnier with “Christ, what an asshole” for a punchline https://web.archive.org/web/20100423063424/http://www.robertsinclair.net/comic/asshole.html #15yrsago UK LibDems pledge to repeal the Digital Economy Bill https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1240561 #10yrsago Arcology: cutaways of the future city-hives that never were https://memex.craphound.com/2015/04/16/arcology-cutaways-of-the-future-city-hives-that-never-were/ #5yrsago The Facebook Political Ad Collector https://pluralistic.net/2020/04/16/new-old-apples/#transparency #5yrsago Zombie movies teach us all the wrong lessons for pandemic https://pluralistic.net/2020/04/16/new-old-apples/#acephalous-kindnesshttps://pluralistic.net/2020/04/16/new-old-apples/#library.json #5yrsago Evangelical pastor denied quarantine, now he wants your stimulus check https://pluralistic.net/2020/04/16/new-old-apples/#death-cult #5yrsago Apple hunters recover ten "lost" varieties from forgotten farms https://pluralistic.net/2020/04/16/new-old-apples/#lostapple #5yrsago FCC will spend $9B to improve broadband…without an accurate broadband map https://pluralistic.net/2020/04/16/new-old-apples/#not-the-territory #5yrsago Plutocrats firehose money on primary challenger to AOC https://pluralistic.net/2020/04/16/new-old-apples/#aoc-not-mcc #1yrago Rebecca Roque's "Till Human Voices Wake Us" https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/16/dead-air/#technorealism Upcoming appearances (permalink) Auckland: Unity Books, May 2, 6PM https://www.eventbrite.co.nz/e/an-evening-with-cory-doctorow-tickets-1320740102199 Wellingon: Unity Books, May 3, 3PM https://www.unitybooks.co.nz/news-and-events/author-talk-picks-and-shovels-by-cory-doctorow Pittsburgh: Picks and Shovels at White Whale Books, May 15 https://whitewhalebookstore.com/events/20250515 Pittsburgh: PyCon, May 16 https://us.pycon.org/2025/schedule/ PDX: Teardown 2025, Jun 20-22 https://www.crowdsupply.com/teardown/portland-2025 PDX: Picks and Shovels with bunnie Huang at Barnes and Noble, Jun 20 https://stores.barnesandnoble.com/event/9780062183697-0 London: How To Academy with Riley Quinn, Jul 1 https://howtoacademy.com/events/cory-doctorow-the-fight-against-the-big-tech-oligarchy/ Manchester: Picks and Shovels at Blackwell's Bookshop, Jul 2 https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/an-evening-with-cory-doctorow-tickets-1308451968059 Manchester: Co-operatives UK Co-op Congress keynote, Jul 3 https://www.uk.coop/events-and-training/events-calendar/co-op-congress-2025-book-your-place New Orleans: DeepSouthCon63, Oct 10-12, 2025 http://www.contraflowscifi.org/ Recent appearances (permalink) Can we use the Internet for Democracy? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zh_HON6iql8 Fightback Against Trump's Tariff Attack (Avi Lewis) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9sgIAc6z_o The Voice of Canadian Humanism https://open.spotify.com/episode/7uuwdZTIbWzKhBQ3mmMiRv?context=spotify%3Ashow%3A6N5hl8on16CfaeYArrKyqZ Latest books (permalink) Picks and Shovels: a sequel to "Red Team Blues," about the heroic era of the PC, Tor Books (US), Head of Zeus (UK), February 2025 (https://us.macmillan.com/books/9781250865908/picksandshovels).
