The new Polaroid Flip comes with sonar autofocus
Polaroid has just unveiled a new camera for some instant analog fun. The Flip comes with fewer features than Polaroid’s pricier I-2 model, but is more advanced than the Go, Polaroid’s most basic instant camera — so it could hit the sweet spot for some folks looking for such a device. Polaroid’s latest camera, which goes on sale at the end of this month, deploys sonar autofocus, a technology that uses sound waves to measure the distance to the subject, ensuring it appears as sharp as possible in the print that pops out of the camera. While none of Polaroid’s current lineup uses sonar autofocus, it actually featured in some of its older cameras back in the 1970s and 1980s, including the Polaroid SX-70 Sonar OneStep and Polaroid SLR 680. The Flip’s sonar autofocus works in conjunction with a hyperfocal 4-lens system, which, as you press the shutter, quickly pulls up one of four lenses — depending on the distance to the subject (0.65m, 0.85m, 1.2m, 2.5m) — to help capture the sharpest image possible. Polaroid’s new camera also comes with a Scene Analysis feature that warns you if your photo is likely to come out underexposed, in which case you can deploy the camera’s built-in flash to throw some light on your subject. It’ll also tell you if the subject is too close to the lens to be in focus. Additional features include double exposure for more surreal shots, and a self-timer mode, though remote control functionality is also possible via the Polaroid app. “Polaroid Flip is more than just a camera — it’s an invitation to embrace real-life moments,” the company says of the latest addition to its range. “In this hyper-digitized, constantly doomscrolling, high-anxiety age, the Polaroid Flip offers a way to connect with life’s best moments — the real, tangible, analog ones; with eight pictures in a pack that will connect to life far more than 800 digital ones.” Keen to hammer the point home, it continues: “Polaroid delivers a true analog experience: photos you can hold forever, not pixels lost in the cloud or forgotten on a phone. The Flip invites creators to simply live a life worth capturing, then click the Flip’s iconic red shutter button.” Polaroid’s latest instant camera competes with others like the Instax devices from Fujifilm, which recently added the Instax mini 41 to its lineup. The Polaroid Flip lands on April 29, and is available for $200, and 200 British pounds from Polaroid’s online store. Retailers will stock it from May 13. Editors’ Recommendations

Nvidia nudges mainstream gaming PCs forward with RTX 5060 series, starting at $299
mainstream blackwell Nvidia nudges mainstream gaming PCs forward with RTX 5060 series, starting at $299 RTX 5060 includes 8GB for $299; RTX 5060 Ti has 8GB or 16GB for $379 and $429. The company is announcing three new GPUs today: The 5060 Ti will launch on April 16 in both 8GB and 16GB variations, for $379 and $429, respectively. The regular RTX 5060 will follow at some point in May for the same $299 MSRP as the last-generation RTX 4060. It is also sticking with 8GB of RAM. Obviously, it remains to be seen whether the company and its partners can actually stock these cards at these prices. GPUs from the top-tier RTX 5090 to the mainstream RTX 5070 have been difficult to impossible to buy at their announced MSRPs. And it's not just Nvidia's problem or a high-end problem—AMD's Radeon RX 9070 series GPUs have also been hard to buy, as have Intel's Arc B580 and B570 cards. The new graphics cards' specs essentially match numbers that have been floating around for a couple of months now. Both models include modest increases in the number of CUDA cores compared to the last-generation 4060 and 4060 Ti models, with the same amount of RAM and the same 128-bit memory interface. But an upgrade to GDDR7 instead of GDDR6 provides a healthy bump to memory bandwidth and is probably also partially responsible for an increase in peak power consumption. The 4060 Ti in particular was memory bandwidth-constrained at higher resolutions, so hopefully some extra bandwidth will make it a better choice for a decent 1440p gaming PC. That means that new xx60 GPUs are an important baseline for PC gaming performance. As with its other 50-series announcements, Nvidia is leaning on its DLSS Multi-Frame Generation technology to make lofty performance claims—the GPUs can insert up to three AI-interpolated frames in between each pair of frames that the GPU actually renders. The 40 series could only generate a single frame, and 30-series and older GPUs don't support DLSS Frame Generation at all. This makes apples-to-apples performance comparisons difficult. Generally, the company says the 5060 Ti and 5060 offer double the performance of the 4060 Ti and 4060, but all of its benchmarks are made using the "max Frame Gen level supported by each GPU." The small snippets of native performance information we do have—Hogwarts Legacy runs on a 5060 Ti at 61 FPS 1440p, compared to 34 FPS for the 3060 Ti—suggests that it's slightly less than twice as fast as that two-generation-old card. This would still be reasonably impressive, given the underwhelming 4060 Ti refresh. But we'll need to wait for third-party testing before we really have a good idea of how performance will stack up without Frame Generation enabled. Nvidia is making lofty performance claims about both the 5060 Ti and the 5060, but all of these numbers enable Multi-Frame Generation for the 50-series cards and not for the older ones (since they don't support the feature). This suggests the 5060 Ti will be something slightly less than twice as fast as the 3060 Ti. Nvidia As we and others have observed since the launch of the 40-series a few years ago, Frame Generation gives the best results when your base frame rate is already reasonably high; the technology is best used to make a good frame rate better and is less useful if you're trying to make a bad frame rate good. That's even more relevant for the slower 50-series than for the other GPUs in the lineup, which makes Nvidia's reticence to provide native performance comparisons especially frustrating. Rumors from earlier this year that correctly reported the specs of the 5060 series also indicated that Nvidia was planning to launch a low-end RTX 5050 GPU at some point, its first new entry-level GPU since launching the RTX 3050 in January 2022. The 5050 could still be coming, but if it is, it wasn't part of Nvidia's announcements today. Trump wants to set up a self-deportation program that involves giving immigrants 'some money and a plane ticket' to get out of the US
"If they are good, if we want them back in, we are going to work with them to get them back in as quickly as we can," President Donald Trump said of illegal immigrants in the US. Trump said his administration would work with immigrants to return to the US lawfully if they are "good." President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he wants to start a self-deportation program for immigrants in America.Trump was speaking to Fox Noticias in an interview when he said that his administration would be rolling out new schemes to tackle illegal immigration in the US."These are rough, bad people. We want them out, and that's mostly our focus, but what we want to do is we are going to have a self-deportation program, which we haven't even announced yet," Trump said on Tuesday.Trump added that he hasn't worked out the exact details of the program, though it could involve giving immigrants a stipend so they could return to their home country."We are going to give him a stipend, we are going to give them some money and a plane ticket, and then we are going to work with them. If they are good, if we want them back in, we are going to work with them to get them back in as quickly as we can," Trump continued.Cracking down on immigration has long been a focus for Trump. While on the campaign trail, Trump said deporting millions of immigrants would result in more job opportunities for Americans.Immigration researchers and analysts, however, told Business Insider that Trump's plans could exacerbate America's demographic challenges as well as result in a labor shortage for the agriculture and construction industries.Earlier in the interview, Trump acknowledged that farmers and business owners rely on immigrants as a source of labor and that he would help businesses hire them lawfully."We are making it so that if a farmer can give recommendations to people, we're going to be very soothing in terms of perhaps letting that farmer take responsibility," Trump told Fox Noticias."But you know, ultimately, at some point, we want people to go out and come back as legal," he added. The White House did not respond to a request for comment from BI. Andor Season 2 Had to Recast Some Rogue One Roles
Star Wars has a lot of characters, and fans love to point like Leo whenever their Glup Shitto shows up. Andor has had a few randomly familiar faces pop in here and there, and since this season is going right into Rogue One, we’ll be seeing more of ’em—just don’t go expecting everyone to be played by their original actor. In a recent interview with the Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Tony Gilroy discussed how the real world and some “budgetary issues” required some adjusting to the show’s season two plans. Some episodes “changed dramatically” because of this, he said, and in the case of at least one legacy character from the beginning of Rogue One—as well as “a couple people in we wanted to have in Yavin”—that undisclosed role will be played by a different actor. Bringing back returning characters with their original actors can be a “really tricky” feat to pull off, he explained. It can be “very, very expensive” for the show—or some performers just may have prior commitments. In recent years, Star Wars’ approach seems to have depended entirely on the project; Ahsoka has a new Baylan Skoll in Rory McCann following Ray Stevenson’s passing in 2023, and has Jim Cummings back as Hondo for Star Wars Outlaws. Conversely (and controversially), generative AI and deepfakes have been used to recreate Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader’s vocal performances in lieu of recasts. We’ve also seen iconic characters played by deceased actors recreated in CG. For the continuity-obsessed, seeing these new actors at may create a slight disconnect when they eventually back-to-back Andor and Rogue One to see how they play off each other. But such is the case of the Glup Shitto: they may not always be the same person on the screen, but they’re the same Glup in our hearts. Want more io9 news?
