The student arrested at his naturalization interview knew it was coming
Mohsen Mahdawi had a feeling his naturalization appointment would go awry. A week before his meeting with US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), Mahdawi called his friend Chris Helali and told him he was concerned. “He thought it was likely — and I agreed — that he would be arrested, that they would ambush him at this interview,” Helali tells The Verge. Mahdawi had been so fearful of being detained by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that he had reportedly been in hiding for weeks. But Mahdawi couldn’t miss the appointment. According to USCIS, “failure to appear for a scheduled interview” almost always “results in denial” of a person’s application. The interview was scheduled for 11AM on April 14th. Helali waited outside the building. “We started to realize that something was amiss,” Helali says. Around noon, the group was told Mahdawi had been handcuffed. Three minutes later, he was escorted out of the building by two Department of Homeland Security officers. Helali captured the arrest, first reported by The Intercept, on video. It’s unusual — though not unheard of — for immigrants to be arrested during USCIS interviews. Matt Cameron, a Boston-based immigration attorney, says it has happened to a couple clients of his, but “always because they have previous immigration or criminal history which makes them deportable.” Mahdawi’s attorneys say he has no criminal record and is a “committed Buddhist” who “believes in non-violence and empathy as a central tenet of his religion.” He doesn’t appear to have violated immigration law. But Mahdawi, who was born in the West Bank, was involved in Columbia University’s student protests against Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza. He knew about the Trump administration’s efforts to deport any noncitizens — even those with green cards and visas — for their involvement in pro-Palestine activism under the auspices of a McCarthy-era immigration law.“He knew he was a target,” Helali says. For him, the arrest was “shocking” — not because it was unexpected but because it made him feel as if “the rule of law that we constantly talk about is not as stable and not as foundational as we might think it is.” What was most striking, though, was how calm Mahdawi appeared. “Mohsen is a calming presence,” Helali says. “He went like a Buddhist: peacefully, calmly, and serenely.”In the video Helali captured, Mahdawi seems calm as he walks out of the USCIS building flanked by agents from ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations division. Handcuffed, Mahdawi threw up two peace signs to the camera but didn’t say a word as the agents put him in an unmarked car and drove off. Unlike other videos of ICE arrests, in which the targets appear confused or scared after being approached by plainclothes officers and told they’re under arrest, Mahdawi immediately understood what was happening to him. He knew it was a possibility before he even walked in. In a habeas corpus petition filed shortly after Mahdawi’s arrest, his attorneys wrote that 10 days after Trump’s inauguration, the far-right and Zionist group Betar US posted about Mahdawi on X, saying he was “on our deport list.” In a March Instagram post, Canary Mission, another right-wing group, said Mahdawi had “justified Hamas terrorism.”‘Mr. Mahdawi was always willing to engage in dialogue with people whose views and beliefs differed from his own.’Both Betar and Canary Mission have claimed that they’re providing lists of foreign students involved in anti-Israel advocacy to the Trump administration, which has conflated opposition to Israel’s treatment of Palestinians with antisemitism writ large. Canary Mission added an “Uncovering Foreign Nationals” page to its website in late March, which identifies foreign students that the group wants Trump to deport. That same month, Betar reportedly claimed it had “reason to believe” that Mahdawi and the Palestinian poet Mosab Abu Toha were “on the short list of those who will shortly be deported.”News of other students being arrested by ICE — including Columbia graduate student Mahmoud Khalil and Tufts University PhD candidate Rumeysa Ozturk — gave Mahdawi’s attorneys time to prepare for his potential apprehension. Attorneys filed a habeas petition just hours after the arrest, requesting not only that Mahdawi be released on bond but that he not be removed from the country or from the state of Vermont. Both Khalil and Ozturk were transferred to ICE detention facilities in Louisiana, where they remain incarcerated far from their attorneys and families — and in jurisdictions that are friendly to the Trump administration. On Monday, a federal judge in Vermont issued a temporary restraining order prohibiting DHS from deporting Mahdawi for now. The order also forbade ICE from removing him from Vermont.Like others arrested by ICE for their pro-Palestine activism, Mahdawi is likely being targeted for statements that would have no legal repercussions if he were a US citizen. Under Trump’s “Executive Order 14188—Additional Measures To Combat Anti-Semitism,” government departments were ordered to come up with ways to “Combat Campus Anti-Semitism.” For DHS, that has meant arresting students involved with pro-Palestine activism.RelatedIn a State Department memo obtained by the New York Times, secretary of state Marco Rubio claimed, without evidence, that Mahdawi had “engaged in threatening rhetoric and intimidation of pro-Israeli bystanders.” Mahdawi’s lawyers denied Rubio’s assertion.Mahdawi remains detained for now. Advocates are calling for his release, noting that he has spoken out against both antisemitism and Israel’s treatment of Palestinians — a point also made in his habeas petition. “Mr. Mahdawi was always willing to engage in dialogue with people whose views and beliefs differed from his own,” it reads. The Intercept reports that in December 2023, Mahdawi got coffee with Shai Davidai, a Columbia professor and vocal supporter of Israel who is now gloating about his arrest. Around the same time he got coffee with Davidai, Mahdawi started meeting with a group of Israeli students at Columbia.“His compassion blew me away,” Roni Ziv, one of the Israeli students who attended the meetings, told Haaretz. “Especially in the US, where people on the left often take an ‘anti-normalization’ stance — he didn’t. The fact that I served in the military wasn’t a dealbreaker for him. That’s rare.”Helali describes Mahdawi as a “bridge-builder.” “[Mahdawi] is very much about reconciliation,” he says.See More:

Data-Driven LLM Evaluation with Statistical Testing
Latest   Machine Learning Data-Driven LLM Evaluation with Statistical Testing 0 like April 16, 2025 Share this post Last Updated on April 16, 2025 by Editorial Team Author(s): Robert Martin-Short Originally published on Towards AI. This is not the first example I’ve seen of 3-armed robot images generated by AI … Image generated by the author. In this article we’ll use a simple example to show how it’s possible to use empirical statistical techniques — namely permutation and bootstrap testing — to evaluate the results of an LLM-powered application and enable confidence in any statement of improvement that’s made. There’s an interesting compromise between rigor and cost here, and each project’s needs will likely be different. Please see here for the code associated with this article. As applications powered by Large Language Models (LLMs) become more complicated, multi-stage and empowered to take important decisions, evaluation of their outputs becomes increasingly important. Evaluation is challenging because of the non-deterministic nature of outputs from generative models, and the fact that it’s often difficult to even quantify the quality of an output with a numerical score. Unlike more traditional ML, there are few data-related prerequisites to getting started with an LLM project, meaning that it’s possible to get quite far without even thinking about defining and computing metrics. Nevertheless, a metrics based approach is important for meaningful iterative improvement and… Read the full blog for free on Medium. Join thousands of data leaders on the AI newsletter. Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 Ending Explained - How the Series Sets Up Season 2 and the Punisher Special
Warning: this article contains full spoilers for Daredevil: Born Again Episode 9! Be sure to check out IGN's review of the Season 1 finale.Daredevil: Born Again has just ended its first season on Disney+, and the finale is quite a doozy. We’ve seen Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock brought low several times over the years, but this might be the bleakest ending yet for old Hornhead. Suffice it to say, MCU fans are in for a very interesting Season 2 when the show makes its return in 2026.As the dust settles from the latest clash between Daredevil and Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin, let’s break down the dramatic ending to Season 1. Who’s still standing, and how does it all set up Season 2? And what about that recently announced Punisher special? Here’s what we learn from Born Again’s season finale.Daredevil: Born AgainDaredevil: Born Again Season 1 Ending ExplainedAll season long, Born Again has been exploring the question of whether a person can permanently and fundamentally change themselves. Can Matt Murdock just be a lawyer, free of the burden of acting as a vigilante and defying the law he’s sworn to uphold? Can Wilson Fisk truly live on the right side of the law, or is he simply talking a big game when he claims to be looking to make his city a better, safer place?By the events of the finale, the answer appears to be a resounding “No.” Matt has been called back into action as Daredevil, spurred on by his clash with Muse and his renewed feud with Fisk. Not that this is necessarily presented as a failure on Matt’s part. He’s been forced to accept that there’s no point in adhering to “the system” when there are many whom the system simply doesn’t protect. As much as he’d like to believe otherwise, the city still needs Daredevil. As for Fisk, at one point, he may have had genuinely good intentions in running for mayor, but we know what they say about those with good intentions. Repeated clashes with disloyal underlings and contemptuous billionaires - as well as his desperate desire to rekindle Vanessa’s (Ayelet Zurer) love for him - have caused Fisk to retreat into his old persona. By this point, Fisk has fully reverted to Kingpin mode and has surrounded himself with an army of cops proudly wearing the Punisher skull and operating completely above the law. Again, the odds are stacked against Matt like never before in the finale. No sooner does he begin to recover from literally taking a bullet for Fisk than Fisk attempts to remove him from the board permanently, reasoning that a martyred hero can only further his mayoral agenda. Fisk’s first big move is to shut off power to the city and turn his army loose on the looters, justifying the need for martial law.No sooner does he begin to recover from literally taking a bullet for Fisk than Fisk attempts to remove him from the board permanently, reasoning that a martyred hero can only further his mayoral agenda.“It’s here that the wounded, desperate Matt finds two badly needed allies in Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle and Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen Page. Karen has called in a favor with Frank (building on their long shared history in both the original Daredevil series and The Punisher spinoff), forcing Frank to take action even though he claims to be disinterested in the chaos sweeping the city. After a bloody showdown that leaves Matt’s apartment in shambles, Matt, Frank, and Karen regroup and plot their next move against Fisk. Matt and Karen know that the key to taking down the Fisks is to find the legal motion Foggy (Elden Henson) was preparing to file before his death. They find that motion tucked away in Foggy’s storage locker. Frank stays behind, again feigning disinterest in the fight against Fisk and his army of “fanboys.” But that facade breaks, and Frank eventually confronts the corrupt cops, killing several before being captured. Daredevil and Karen prepare to storm Fisk’s compound at the Red Hook port, but even Matt can’t deny that the odds are too stacked against them. He won’t be one-shot hallway fighting his way out of this predicament. Instead, the two retreat to lick their wounds and gather what allies they have to fight another day.And that’s basically where the series leaves things at the end of Season 1. Fisk is triumphant, having extended his grip over the city and imprisoned or killed most of his enemies. Costumed vigilantes are now strictly outlawed in the city. Evil wins, for now. But that doesn’t stop Matt from delivering a rousing speech about the importance of resistance and the enduring strength of New York in Josie’s Bar. The tone has been set for Season 2. Matt has once again embraced his Daredevil persona and is ready to fight for his city by any means necessary. PlayDoes Daredevil: Born Again Have a Post-Credits Scene?Like so many MCU projects before it, Daredevil: Born Again does indeed have a post-credts scene (or a mid-credits scene, to be specific). That scene revisits Frank Castle, who after enduring a savage beating at the hands of Fisk’s fanatically loyal cops, is now imprisoned in Red Hook alongside the city’s billionaire elite. Frank wastes no time cozying up to the guard, who makes the mistake of shaking hands with The Punisher. One savage bone breaking later, Frank is free and ready to resume his campaign of vengeance.Does that mean we can expect Bernthal to reprise his role in Season 2? Possibly, but Marvel appears to have other plans in mind for The Punisher as well. We’ll get to him in a bit. What to Expect From Born Again Season 2Marvel doesn’t have a strong track record of following up their various Disney + shows with second seasons. On the live-action front, so far only Loki has returned for Season 2. Given that Born Again effectively ends on a cliffhanger, it would be pretty frustrating if the series met with the same fate. Luckily, fans needn’t worry about Born Again becoming trapped in limbo. Season 2 is definitely happening.Marvel originally announced Born Again as being an 18-episode series. Plans have shifted somewhat since then, but now we can expect an 8-episode second season to follow up on this initial batch of 9 episodes. Dario Scardapane will again serve as showrunner of Season 2, and directors/producers Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson are also returning. Best of all, the new season is already in production, making a 2026 release very possible. In a roundtable interview with IGN, D’Onofrio revealed that he’s read the scripts for Season 2 and had a very emotional reaction.“There's already information about what we're about to start shooting in the second season that I had to have a little cry about,” D’Onofrio tells IGN. “So it's quite something. This show can be quite intense as an actor.” Based on how Episode 9 ends, we have a pretty good idea of the tone and direction of Season 2. Expect an even darker pivot next time around. Fisk has successfully installed himself as the all but untouchable monarch of the city. He’s outlawed costumed vigilantes, which gives his militant police force carte blanche to target anyone rioting or protesting against the government. Daredevil has a few allies - Karen, Clark Johnson’s Cherry, Ruibo Qian’s Detective Kim, etc. - but he’s still just one man staring down the void of facism and systemic rot.Art by David Mazzucchelli. (Image Credit: Marvel/IDW)It’s here where the thematic similarities to the original Daredevil: Born Again comic really start to become apparent. In the comic, Fisk systematically dismantles Matt’s life after discovering his secret identity, leaving Matt homeless and destitute. But as Fisk soon discovers, a man without hope is also a man without fear. Matt rises from the ashes more driven than ever, delivering a shattering blow to Fisk’s criminal empire and public reputation. The circumstances in this series are somewhat different. Fisk has already known Matt’s secret for some time now, and Matt’s arc in Daredevil: Season 3 was arguably a more direct adaptation of the Born Again comic. But this series still presents a scenario where Daredevil’s back is against a wall and he’s been stripped down to his core. His life as Matt Murdock is seemingly over until the present crisis is dealt with. He’s now 100% Daredevil, reborn and fully committed to bringing down Fisk’s regime. Thanks to Foggy, he and Karen have the ammo. Now they have to make their city understand the truth about the monster they elected. We’re expecting most of the Season 1 supporting cast to return for Season 2. That includes Woll’s Karen Page, who appears to be positioned for a bigger role next time around.Scardapane tells IGN, “I will say only as I've said time and time [again], Karen Page is the heart and soul of this universe and of this Daredevil mythology and Karen's interaction with our story. And this season and beyond is huge.”Fisk’s ban on masks affects a great many characters in the MCU. It’s sort of Captain America: Civil War’s Sokovia Accords in a New York microcosm.“However, Season 2 also opens the door for more costumed vigilantes to make an appearance. Fisk’s ban on masks affects a great many characters in the MCU. It’s sort of Captain America: Civil War’s Sokovia Accords in a New York microcosm. Anyone in the city who wears a mask and attempts to use it for either good or ill is now directly in Fisk’s crosshairs.Rumors have persisted that Born Again will bring back other actors from the Netflix days, such as Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones and Mike Colter’s Luke Cage. The status quo heading into Season 2 certainly justifies bringing both characters into the fold. Born Again hints that we may meet at least one new costumed hero in Season 2. Camila Rodriguez’ Angela Ayala is showing every sign of wanting to follow in her uncle’s footsteps and becoming the new White Tiger (as happened in the comics). She may not have much in the way of training, but a mystical amulet has to count for something, right?Check back tomorrow for a deeper dive into the MCU’s current lineup of street-level heroes and vigilantes. How Born Again Sets Up the Punisher SpecialIf there’s one takeaway from the Season 1 finale, it’s that there’s a definite future for Bernthal’s Frank Castle in the MCU. We see Frank making his violent escape from Fisk’s homemade prison. There’s definitely going to be some more punishment on the menu.Bernthal probably has a part to play in Season 2, but that’s not all. We recently learned that Marvel is developing a standalone Punisher Disney+ special in the vein of Werewolf by Night and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. Bernthal will star and is also writing the screenplay alongside We Own This City’s Reinaldo Marcus Green.PlayPresumably, the Punisher special will delve deeper into the conflict between Frank Castle and the corrupt cops who have co-opted his image and mission. It’s a big real-world problem facing the character that Marvel has finally started to address, and Born Again appears to be just the start of a larger storyline. We’ll probably see Frank go on the offensive again, and likely deliver some version of his famous speech to two NYPD officers from 2019’s The Punisher #13:"We're not the same. You took an oath to uphold the law. I gave all that up a long time ago. You don't do what I do. Nobody does."That doesn’t necessarily preclude Bernthal from also appearing in Born Again: Season 2. As long as Frank remains active as a vigilante, the Fisk regime is a clear and present danger. That means we can probably expect another reluctant Daredevil/Punisher team-up in the near future. And who knows? Maybe Karen will finally accept that offer of a cup of coffee.Which vigilante do you most want to see in Born Again Season 2? Tim Cook Has a Strange Obsession
Apple CEO Tim Cook is far from giving up on virtual and augmented reality headsets, a gadget category that has been rife with setbacks and risky bets that didn't pan out.As Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported over the weekend, the tech giant is getting ready to launch not one, but two updated versions of its Vision Pro, a $3,499 mixed-reality headset that has seen sluggish sales and even given wearers black eyes. That's despite rumors circulating last summer that Apple had given up on a follow-up device of the uber-expensive gadget. In fact, Cook is so convinced of the segment that he's looking to beat Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg — who shares an obsession with AR and VR headsets — to market. According to Bloomberg, Cook wants to create a pair of AR glasses that buyers can wear all day."Tim cares about nothing else," an insider with knowledge of the matter told Gurman. "It’s the only thing he’s really spending his time on from a product development standpoint."But given the segment's well-documented challenges in wooing a mainstream market, that could be far easier said than done. We've seen numerous products fail to live up to the hype, particularly in the VR space. As far as wearable smart glasses are concerned, Meta has some experience. Its Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses, which feature bone-conducting earphones, a camera, and a microphone, have proven surprisingly popular. However, to call them augmented reality glasses would be an overstatement, as they can't overlay data or other info over the wearer's vision.Earlier this month, Gurman reported that Meta is looking to follow up its glasses with a $1,000-plus deluxe version, which includes a screen for displaying photos and apps. But details are still pretty sparse and the company has yet to announce a release date.Whether Apple can swoop in and release a lighter and cheaper pair of AR glasses remains to be seen. Even coming up with a successor to its much beefier and unwieldy Vision Pro headset could prove challenging. According to Bloomberg, the goal is to greatly reduce both weight and price, which is an appreciable challenge, especially considering the possibility of escalating tariffs on Chinese imports. To make the jump to a light accessory that has the same form factor as a pair of sunglasses is substantial. As a stepping stone, Apple is reportedly looking to attach a camera to its Apple Watch and AirPods, an admittedly awkward answer to Meta's Ray-Ban glasses. In short, where Cook's obsession with beating Zuckerberg to the punch will leave Apple's foray into the glasses space is anyone's guess — though if there's one thing we know about Apple, it's that the company hates to lose.Share This Article

Public broadcasting White House calls NPR and PBS a “grift,” will ask Congress to rescind funding Markey: Cutting NPR and PBS "is not budget discipline, it's cultural sabotage." Credit: Getty Images | Drew Angerer Story text Size Small Standard Large Width * Standard Wide Links Standard Orange * Subscribers only   Learn more The Trump White House is proposing to eliminate most federal funding for National Public Radio (NPR) and the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) and issued a statement yesterday alleging that NPR and PBS "spread radical, woke propaganda disguised as 'news.'" "The NPR, PBS grift has ripped us off for too long," the White House statement said. White House budget director Russ Vought drafted a memo for a rescission plan that would eliminate funding already approved by Congress, according to multiple news reports. This includes $1.1 billion for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB), or about two years' worth of funding for the nonprofit group that provides money to public broadcasting stations. The Vought memo accused CPB of a "lengthy history of anti-conservative bias," according to The New York Post. The memo also reportedly proposes an $8.3 billion cut for USAID. The $1.1 billion accounts for most of the federal money that goes to CPB. "The Trump administration isn't planning to ask Congress to claw back about $100 million allocated for emergency communications," The New York Times wrote. The NYT wrote that CPB "is 'forward-funded' two years to insulate it from political maneuvering, and a sizable chunk of the money for 2025 has already been paid out to public broadcasters in the United States." In March, Trump said in a Truth Social post that NPR and PBS are "two horrible and completely biased platforms" that "should be DEFUNDED by Congress, IMMEDIATELY." In a statement provided to Ars today, PBS CEO Paula Kerger said that "the effort underway to get Congress to rescind public media funding would disrupt the essential service PBS and local member stations provide to the American people. There's nothing more American than PBS, and our work is only possible because of the bipartisan support we have always received from Congress... Without PBS member stations, Americans will lose unique local programming and emergency services in times of crisis." We also contacted the CPB and NPR today and will update this article if they provide any comments. Markey: “Outrageous and reckless... cultural sabotage” Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.) blasted the Trump plan, calling it "an outrageous and reckless attack on one of our most trusted civic institutions... From 'PBS NewsHour' to 'Sesame Street,' public television has set the gold standard for programming that empowers viewers, particularly young minds. Cutting off this lifeline is not budget discipline, it's cultural sabotage." Citing an anonymous source, Bloomberg reported that the White House "plans to send the package to Congress when lawmakers return from their Easter recess on April 28... That would start a 45-day period during which the administration can legally withhold the funding. If Congress votes down the plan or does nothing, the administration must release the money back to the intended recipients." The rarely used rescission maneuver can be approved by the Senate with a simple majority, as it is not subject to a filibuster. "Presidents have used the rescission procedure just twice since 1979—most recently for a $15 billion spending cut package by Trump in 2018. That effort failed in the Senate," Bloomberg wrote. CPB expenses in fiscal-year 2025 are $545 million, of which 66.9 percent goes to TV programming. Another 22.3 percent goes to radio programming, while the rest is for administration and support. NPR and PBS have additional sources of funding. Corporate sponsorships are the top contributor to NPR, accounting for 36 percent of revenue between 2020 and 2024. NPR gets another 30 percent of its funding in fees from member stations. Federal funding indirectly contributes to that category because the CPB provides annual grants to public radio stations that pay NPR for programming. PBS reported that its total expenses were $689 million in fiscal-year 2024 and that it had $348.5 million in net assets at the end of the year. NPR and PBS are also facing pressure from Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr, who opened an investigation in January and called on Congress to defund the organizations. Carr alleged that NPR and PBS violated a federal law prohibiting noncommercial educational broadcast stations from running commercial advertisements. NPR and PBS both said their underwriting spots comply with the law. Jon Brodkin Senior IT Reporter Jon Brodkin Senior IT Reporter Jon is a Senior IT Reporter for Ars Technica. 4chan has been down since Monday night after “pretty comprehensive own”
we had four chan, and now we have zero chan 4chan has been down since Monday night after “pretty comprehensive own” Early info is unreliable, but the site has been mostly unavailable for hours. Andrew Cunningham – Apr 15, 2025 2:43 pm | 59 Credit: 4chan Credit: 4chan Story text Size Small Standard Large Width * Standard Wide Links Standard Orange * Subscribers only   Learn more Infamous Internet imageboard and wretched hive of scum and villainy 4chan was apparently hacked at some point Monday evening and remains mostly unreachable as of this writing. DownDetector showed reports of outages spiking at about 10:07 pm Eastern time on Monday, and they've remained elevated since. Posters at Soyjack Party, a rival imageboard that began as a 4chan offshoot, claimed responsibility for the hack. But as with all posts on these intensely insular boards, it's difficult to separate fact from fiction. The thread shows screenshots of what appear to be 4chan's PHP admin interface, among other screenshots, that suggest extensive access to 4chan's databases of posts and users. Security researcher Kevin Beaumont described the hack as "a pretty comprehensive own" that included "SQL databases, source, and shell access." 404Media reports that the site used an outdated version of PHP that could have been used to gain access, including the phpMyAdmin tool, a common attack vector that is frequently patched for security vulnerabilities. Ars staffers pointed to the presence of long-deprecated and removed functions like mysql_real_escape_string in the screenshots as possible signs of an old, unpatched PHP version. In other words, there's a possibility that the hackers have gained pretty deep access to all of 4chan's data, including site source code and user data. Some widely shared posts on social media sites have made as-yet-unsubstantiated claims about data leaks from the outage, including the presence of users' real names, IP addresses, and .edu and .gov email addresses used for registration. Without knowing more about the extent of the hack, reports of the site's ultimate "death" are probably also premature.
